Celebrating A Milestone Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation Plans Gala

The Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation is known for attracting up to 6,000 visitors to each of its summer concerts - 30,000 for the July Fourth celebration - as well as offering an annual art festival, but looking ahead, the organization would like to be seen as more collaborative with other organizations. Toward that goal, the Lancaster County Food Hub, SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), Lancaster Farmland Trust, Lancaster Conservancy, and the Spanish American Civic Association have been invited to have a part at upcoming concerts, and the art festival will feature up to five up-and-coming new area artists. “After 60 years, people are aware of our summer concerts and our art festival, and now if we can just extend that reach to other great community resources, that is a blessing for everyone,” said Tom Ellis, interim president of the foundation.

Lancaster’s Sweet 5K To Return To Amos Herr Park he 22nd annual Amos Herr Honey Run will return on Saturday, Aug. 27, to Amos Herr Park on Nissley Road in Landisville.

The event will feature two runs: the 5K Honey Run at 8 a.m. and the kids’ run at 9:30 a.m.

This will be the second Honey Run held at the park since the COVID-19 pandemic, and local residents are eager to participate in the decades-old tradition. Previously held in the evening, the run will now begin in the morning to avoid unfavorable weather conditions. Awards will be given for first, second and third places in

each age group, divided into age 14 and under, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69 and 70 and up. Each runner will receive an award for participation for both the 5K and the kids’ fun run, which is organized into the following age groups: age 5 and under, ages 6 to 8 and ages 9 to 11.

The first two kids’ fun run groups will be running a quarter mile, while the group for ages 9 to 11 will run half a mile.

The 5K will be again sponsored

by Dutch Gold Honey, and the kids’ fun run will be sponsored by routine supporter Sardina Dental Group. Hitch Coffee will have a truck present to sell coffee and

other beverages. Last year, over 100 runners participated in the race, and over $2,000 was raised. The races will be staffed volunteers from Hempfield recCenter, members of the Hempfield High School cross-country team and various community members.

The funds raised from the Honey Run directly benefit the community via Hempfield recCenter’s Everyone Belongs campaign. The Everyone Belongs fund acts as a type of scholarship for those who require financial assistance with rec center programs and membership, ranging from a variety of adult fitness classes and sports leagues to several youth courses. Funds will also be

used to benefit restoration projects at the Herr Homestead in Landisville. Separate registration fees have been set for the 5K and the kids’ fun run. To register ahead of time for either race, search “Honey Run” at www.Active.com. Same-day registration will also be accepted.

The Honey Run is one of many events coordinated by the Hempfield recCenter. Summer activities on the center’s agenda include a community movie night on Friday, Aug. 5, and a flea market at Amos Herr Park in September. Kleen-Rite Corporation, which provides supplies for the car wash industry, so it really seems fitting that we’re doing a car show,” she stated, adding that it was a lifelong dream of Judy’s to open an animal shelter. “Without the car wash business, this place wouldn’t exist.”

Last year’s car show drew a large crowd not only of participants but of spectators as well, and Jalbert is hopeful that this year’s event will do the same. “We’d like everybody from the community to come out,” she said. “It’s a really great family event, and it’s free to attend. Come out on a Saturday, check out the cars, enjoy some food, possibly win a prize or two. It’s really fun for the whole family.”

Cats and cars will come together at Columbia Animal Shelter when the organization hosts the Cruisin’ for Cats Car Show. The event will be held at the shelter, 265 S. 10th St., on Saturday, July 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, July 31.

“This is our fourth annual event, and each year, it’s gotten bigger and better,” said Tammy Jalbert, executive director of the shelter.

“The first year, we had 55 cars participate. Last year, we had 200 cars, and our goal for this year is between 250 and 300 cars. That’s about the maximum we could host in the space.”

“We have everything from vintage cars to newer models,” Jalbert said.

“We had an old ambulance last year, and it won a prize.” The top 20 cars will win awards in a variety of categories, including Best in Show, she said.

The event will also feature a basket giveaway, music from a DJ and food. “The shelter will be open, so people can come in and take a look,” Jalbert noted. Proceeds from the event will benefit programs at the shelter, including a new wellness clinic.

Hosting a car show is a perfect fit for the Columbia Animal Shelter, Jalbert explained, because the shelter was created through the Harold and Judy McKonly Family Foundation. “They were the founders of

Author Libby Sternberg of Lancaster has been named a finalist for the Publishers Weekly Fiction Award for “Daisy,” which is based on Daisy Buchanan, the lead female character from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.” “Daisy,” recently acquired

by Bancroft, will be released in hardcover in September. It is currently available digitally.

Her solo piano piece “Lucid Dreaming” was a semifinalist in the 2021 international Fidelio competition, and “Helicity,” a piece for trumpet and piano, won the instrumental portion of the 2021 international ANSONIA competition.

Blood Drive Set In Memory Of Adam Mansfield The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive on Friday, Aug. 5, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Eden Resort and Suites, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster, in memory of Adam Mansfield.

Adam was a micro preemie, weighing 1 pound, 7 ounces. Blood donation was a crucial part of Adam’s care, as he received eight blood transfusions. He passed away at Hershey Medical Center on his due date of March 18, 2020, three months after his birth.

While the Mansfield family could not have a funeral service for him due to the pandemic, the family is honoring Adam’s memory with a Red Cross blood drive to help others in need. The goal is to

Corley holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alberta and master’s and doctorate degrees from The Juilliard School. Lancaster County Office of Aging operates a program called PA Medi, formerly APPRISE. There are 52 PA Medi offices all over Pennsylvania.

This group assists older adults with Medicare and health insurance questions all year round.

Each fall, volunteer counselors from PA Medi will meet individually with beneficiaries who already have Medicare to review their Medicare plans. Some insurance companies make policy changes in fall and/or increase their yearly cost, making it worthwhile to review Medicare plans whether the plan stays the same or not.

During open enrollment, individuals can switch Advantage Plans and those who have original Medicare can switch their Part D pre-

scription plan at this time. Changes made would be effective Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023.

Appointments are done confidentially and in an unbiased manner. The service is free of charge, and appointments take about one hour per person.

PA Medi will accept calls in September to set up appointments.

In celebration of the organization’s anniversary, a gala and art auction will be held on Friday, Sept.

30, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. Tickets, which will go on sale on Monday, Aug. 1, at www.longspark.org, will be limited. Board member Janice Henry is chairing the event.

A segment of the event will be devoted to a presentation by wellknown local architect Gregory Scott, whose firm originally designed the amphitheater. Scott will look back on the history of the iconic building, which began when the Sertoma Club put together a leadership team

in 1959 and then built and commissioned the amphitheater before turning it over to the city.

The live auction of original art, which will benefit the foundation, will showcase members of the Echo Valley Art Group. A highlight of that portion of the event will be the sale of a commissioned piece created by artist Lisa Madenspacher. Her rendition of the amphitheater pays homage to the concerts and fireworks with which the building is associated. Another auction item will poke fun at the amphitheater’s long association with wild birds.

“We have a bird feeder that was created as a fundraiser,” said Ellis, who noted that the roof of the feeder has the same profile as the amphitheater. “We are calling it an amphi-feeder.” The feeder was fabricated and painted by Viocity Group and donated by Woodstream Corporation.

Food for the gala will be created by former White House chef John Moeller, known for owning and preparing cuisine at the Greenfield Restaurant and Bar.

A native of Lititz, McCoy is a singer, songwriter and speaker, as well as a worship leader and women’s ministry leader at her local church. McCoy was raised in a Christian home and now uses her talents to share the Gospel, encourage believers and raise awareness of issues such as domestic violence. Among her original music is “Rescue Me,” which was inspired by her testimony and aims to offer comfort and hope to those who feel burdened and overwhelmed.

GOTR Plans New Season Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon will host its new season from Monday, Sept.

12, through Monday, Nov. 21. The GOTR 5K presented by Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster will take place on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Millersville University.

GOTR offers fun, evidence-based programs that are designed to inspire all girls to build their confidence, kindness, and decisionmaking skills. Lessons are intended to instill valuable life skills, including the connection between physi-
