Hempfield

Wellness Fair Is Designed To Inspire Healthier Choices

The life you save may be your own.

West Hempfield Fire & Rescue will host a Health and Wellness Fair on Wednesday, July 30, from 2 to 7 p.m. at the fire company, 3476 Marietta Ave., Lancaster.

The event will be held rain or shine; it will be moved indoors if the weather is bad.

Tara Moyer, the fire company’s event coordinator, said crafters and vendors will sell crochet plushies, 3D-printed items, homemade soaps and body care products,

press-on nails, Tastefully Simple products, and more.

Food trucks Spudtacular; Nooners Gourmet Italian Ice, selling hand-dipped ice cream; Daisy’s Creations, selling kettle corn; and Fresh Frenchy’s Açaí will be at the event.

Lancaster General Hospital will hold a blood drive during the event. Walk-ins will be accepted, but registration by calling 717-544-0170 is encouraged.

Moyer said the Health and Wellness Fair is designed to inform the community about local organizations.

“The event promotes awareness,

education and access to resources that support a healthy lifestyle,” she said. “Wellness checks can help with early detection of health issues. I’m hoping this event will inspire healthier choices to the community by helping to connect those in need with resources they may not be aware of.”

Moyer said the following organizations will be at the Health and Wellness Fair: Disability Empowerment Center, which provides assistance for people with disabilities in Lancaster and Lebanon counties; Redemption Wellness Services LLC, which provides healing through a holistic approach and

There’s a high probability anyone who attends a Hempfield High School athletics event will cross paths with Ryan Landis. Landis, Hempfield’s omnipresent athletic director (AD), realizes the importance of consistently being available to coaches, student-athletes, and community members.

“I think as an athletic director, one of, if not my biggest job, is to be visible and to be at as many sporting events as possible,” Landis said. “So I sacrifice a lot of time in my office because that’s just not me; it’s not my strength. And I think where I’ve had some success is I’ve learned to delegate and prioritize. My opinion is that most people, whether that’s parents, students, or administration, most people want me to be at sporting events and activities and be visible more than anything else.”

Assistant athletic director Carson Kulina and department secretary Rachel Culp help share the workload so Landis has the freedom to get out of his office. “I need them to run a lot of stuff and take care of business,” said Landis, who cited 1:30 p.m. golf matches as an example. “When I’m there and I’m walking four or five holes, and I’m taking a picture of each golfer, and I’m talking to the parents, or the golfers wave to me after a hole, that’s important. It really is. It doesn’t maybe seem as important, but it I think builds the culture of your school district.”

Lancaster CPR Trains People To Save Lives

Knowing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is kind of like having insurance. You hope you never have to use it, but there’s a peace of mind associated with knowing it’s there if you ever do.

The act of CPR is also one of the highest forms of respect and empathy that one human being can display for another.

We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. “Because the investment of time and energy that it takes to learn it is very small, everyone should know it,” said Ken Brennan, an emergency medical technician (EMT), a CPR and first aid instructor and the owner of Lancaster CPR. “Everyone knows someone who’s going to need CPR. I think a lot of people feel if they need 911, they’re going to get help in seconds. But that’s not true. If a patient doesn’t survive long enough, emergency medical services can’t do their job.”

Located at 1248 W. Main St., Suite L-1, Ephrata, Lancaster CPR offers instruction in the life-changing and life-altering practices of advanced cardiac support,

pediatric advanced life support, first aid and CPR. In association with the American Heart Association, Lancaster CPR primarily trains health care professionals, but it also offers instruction to groups, churches, businesses, organizations and individuals.

“We predominantly provide the training that health care workers need to do their jobs,” said Ken. “They need to be recertified every two years. Obviously, if you work in health care, the odds are much higher that you’re going to use it. Depending on what you do, you’ll probably use it twice in your life. For the general public, I’d say the odds are one in 100 that you’re going to use it. But when you’re dealing with a large group of people, heart attacks are going to be more common.”

One of the keys to successfully administering CPR is immediacy and a sense of urgency.

“There’s a very short window of opportunity, usually two to three minutes when someone goes into cardiac arrest,” said Ken. “The more people who know CPR, the more likely we’re going to be able to save lives. It should take less than 20 seconds to determine if CPR is necessary.”

“Among the general public, about one in 500 people have taken a course,” added Ken. “But if someone has been trained in CPR in high school, they don’t really know anything now. That’s why it’s important to update it.”

Ken originally started

Award-Winning Publications

Our community papers (Merchandiser, Advertiser, Pennysaver and Community Courier) had a strong showing at the Best of the Best Association of Community Publishers (ACP) 2024 awards competition. ACP represents community publications from coast to coast, reaching millions of homes on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis.

A few of our 2024 awards include the

teaching CPR at Lancaster General Hospital. After he left the hospital, he began offering CPR instruction on his own, before he and his wife, Ashley Brennan, founded Lancaster CPR in 2015.

“There was a lot of demand not being met, and that’s sort of how we got started,” said Ken. “I started doing it myself on the side. The classes were relatively successful, and we just went from there. The business success hasn’t changed because we were in the right place, at the right time, at the right location, under the right circumstances.”

For additional information, go to www.lancaster cpr.com.

Lancaster CPR offers first aid training at its full class room facility three days a week. The organization also offers on-site training for corporations or nonprofits.

Typically, Lancaster CPR’s class sizes range from six to 30 individuals.

“Let’s say you find some one on the ground,” said Ken. “The first thing you have to do is make sure it’s safe for you. Then you tap the person on the shoulder, and if they don’t respond, you call for help, get someone to call 911 and try to get an AED (automated external defibrillator). You might check their breathing, and you might check their pulse. If you have to, start doing compressions on their chest, and decide if you want to give breaths.”

“It’s easy to learn,” continued Ken. “What it comes down to is doing compressions on the chest. If you’re doing something that resembles compressions, the person’s chances are better than zero. If you’re learning the basics of CPR, it only takes a half hour. But not everyone wants to learn to do this.”

Now, Landis has an opportunity to widen his reach and serve as a sounding board and source of advice for athletic directors from across the commonwealth. On July 1, he started a two-year term as president-elect of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Directors Association (PSADA), which precedes a two-year term as the group’s president.

While serving as president-elect, the de facto vice president, Landis will help organize PSADA’s annual conference in Hershey, which provides additional training for the more than 800 ADs statewide.

“My main focus is going to be preparing college seniors that are going into this field, helping them out, and then also kind of behind-the-scenes mentoring the newer ADs,” Landis said. “Because of proximity, that’s probably going to be via phone calls and emails.”

He said those two things are critical because of an alarming trend. “We’re seeing a somewhat concerning turnover rate,” said Landis, adding that mentoring is important to ensure people are aware of every aspect that goes into being a successful AD.

Because of the camara -

derie among ADs in the Lancaster-Lebanon League, Landis is proud to be the first from the local conference to become PSADA president-elect. “There’s no group of people that have helped me as much in my job as fellow athletic directors,” he said of his colleagues.

He stated that working alongside league ADs is one of his favorite parts of the job. “Our league works really well together,” Landis said. “We treat small schools and large schools as equally important, and that’s a big point of emphasis for our league.”

Landis grew up in the L-L League and graduated from Warwick High School and Millersville University. He taught elementary school in the ELANCO School District for 11 years and at Mountville Elementary School for three years while also coaching basketball at Garden Spot and Warwick. “I had no ambitions of being an athletic director,” he said. “It was never on my radar.” Landis considered becoming an elementary school principal before deciding that was not the right position for him. He jumped at the chance to become the AD at his alma mater when the posi-

tion opened in the middle of a school year and worked in that position for nine years. Landis is beginning his fourth year as Hempfield’s athletic director. He enjoyed being a coach but relishes the AD role, which allows him to support student-athletes in 20 sports instead of just one.

“I love the postseason,” he said. “It’s exciting when you get to that level and then when you have those chances to go on those magical runs, whether it was our baseball team last year, or even our tennis doubles team, or (former Black Knights’ track state champion) Aidan Hodge; those are just really, really cool moments.”

When Landis is not attending sports events, he and his staff are handling many other tasks. “The budget’s a big one,” he said. “Trying to manage all the different athletics and activity accounts, just trying to have a handle in that.”

Athletic department members also manage transportation and work to fill coaching staffs while balancing the concerns of student-athletes and parents. “That’s a challenge because, in my role, I have to make sure that

State Warns Residents of Fake Inheritance Scam

The Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID), Pennsylvania Department of Aging, Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities (DoBS), and Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), along with the Office of Attorney General, warn Pennsylvanians to stay vigilant after a scam was reported involving someone posing as a commonwealth employee. The reported scam used a fake email resembling an official commonwealth email address to target older Pennsylvanians and request money through licensed financial institutions to receive a fake inheritance.

People who receive suspicious emails or texts or messages about earning money or an inheritance from a stranger should not respond or feel pressured to act quickly. People should also check email addresses,

watch out for fake websites, and be aware that Pennsylvania agencies will not threaten immediate action without proper notice.

Anyone who is contacted in a suspicious manner should not provide any personal or financial information or send money and should report the incident to PID or DoBS at 866-PAComplaint or www.pa.gov/consume.

Anyone who feels they have been scammed may file a complaint with the Office of Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection at www.attorneygeneral.gov or by calling 800-441-2555.

Governor Josh Shapiro has directed his administration and state agencies to use all available resources to protect Pennsylvanians and fight scams and fraud. State departments are working with law enforcement to track and stop these

our student-athletes have a voice and have to work with parents, but at the same time, I also have to make sure I’m supporting coaches, too,” said Landis. “It’s a really tricky, fine line sometimes.” He also devotes time to keeping the community updated through social media.

Landis spends summers tweaking schedules and checking the inventory of equipment and uniforms.

Landis also started an initiative that requires each Hempfield sports team to perform community service. For example, he said the baseball and tennis teams took time from postseason practices to help with Special Olympics.

Cameron Powers, who will be one of the officers on-site, quickly learned how important the process is just days after earning certification in a four-day course. “I just did it because I wanted to get myself out there and get more certifications under my belt,” she said.

“I really did learn a lot of different things.”

Shortly after completing the training, Powers responded to a call and subsequently spotted a mother improperly placing her child in a car seat.

“(The mother) put the seatbelt over top of the car seat,” Powers recalled. “And I paused, and I said, ‘Hey, I’m going to redo your car seat. And I had to redo the harnessing and all of that. I was able to fix her car seat, and she was able to calm down. She thanked me, and it made me feel like this really does mean something to a community because some people don’t know how to do that.”
