Golf Balls For Basketballs BY COURTNEY MENGEL

he eighth annual golf tournament hosted by the Hempfield girls’ and boys’ basketball booster clubs will be held at Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville, on Friday, Aug. 6. Check-in for this rain-or-shine event will open at 11 a.m., and play will begin with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Registration is requested by Saturday, July 31, but sameday registration will be available. A cost per golfer has been set and includes a picnic-style lunch, use of a golf cart, a hole-in-one opportunity, beverages, a door prize, and a goodie bag. Team, contest hole, and giveaway winners will be notified and given their awards following the round. The proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Hempfield School District’s girls’ and boys’ basketball programs. The booster clubs’ members are athletes’ parents and other people who are interested in supporting, improving, and assisting the district’s basketball programs, said parent volunteer Daren Moffatt.

Donating With A Twist

The golf tournament will benefit the girls’ and boys’ basketball programs at Hempfield schools. The groups’ sphere of influence covers all grades from elementary to high school. Their primary function is fundraising and volunteering to support the programs and to promote school spirit through athletics. As examples of what expenses the booster clubs cover for all players in

the programs, Moffatt listed league and tournament fees, video equipment, apparel, sneakers, team equipment, team-building activities, strength and conditioning activities, and team recognition events. “This year, it looks like we will get back to normal now that several

Every year on the first Tuesday of the month of August, National Night Out (NNO) is celebrated across the U.S. NNO is an annual campaign that promotes relationships between the community and the police to make neighborhoods safer places to live. In conjunction with the West Hempfield Police, Manor Township Police will host its NNO at Leisure Lanes, 3440 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. The event will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Mary Mother of the Church will host a bazaar on Saturday, July 17, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, 625 Union School Road, Mount Joy. The event will also feature two community service components - stuff the bus and a food bank collection. This is the first time the church is holding the stuff the bus collection, said bazaar committee co-chair Claudia. “It was brought to our attention at one of our ministry meetings that there are a number of displaced or homeless students in our area, so this is a way to alleviate some of the burden and help our community,” she stated. School supplies for children and youths in grades kindergarten through 12 will be collected, along with sweatshirts, sweatpants and children’s socks. The items will

Food collected will benefit the Mount Joy Food Bank and the East Donegal Conoy Christian Food Bank. Everyone who donates three items either to stuff the bus or to the food bank collection will receive three tickets for a basket giveaway drawing at the bazaar. The bazaar will include 30 vendors, offering everything from crafts to art. A Chinese auction will be held, and hundreds of baskets will be featured in a giveaway drawing. Items include restaurant gift cards, trips to local attractions and more. “This is truly a ‘love thy neighbor’ event,” said Claudia, who noted that

Death At A Funeral Family feuds can be dramatic, dysfunctional or - in the case of Rivertown Theatre Productions’ newest show deadly. “The Deadly Affair” will be performed on Friday, July 23, at 6 and 8 p.m.; Saturday, July 24, at 4, 6 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, July 25, at 2, 4 and 6 p.m. Performances will be held at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 616 Locust St., Columbia. The church makes the perfect setting for the play, said Sara Mimnall, who, along with Rebecca Wright, wrote the show. “Edward Keller has just died tragically, and his immediate family has come together for his funeral,” she explained. “There is definitely some inner family fighting going on.” After the drama comes to a boiling point, the characters storm off in a rage before returning to settle down and continue the funeral. They soon discover not all have returned - and one person won’t be coming back. “The show is a mix of comedy and drama,” noted Mimnall, who plays Anne Keller in the show. “There are

moments of laughs, but there are also times when you’ll be sitting on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next.” In addition to Mimnall, the cast of “The Deadly Affair” is Emily Barnhart as Clara Adams, Rick Barnhart as Edward Keller, Chris Raudabaugh as William Keller, Jayden Smith as James Keller, Nick Kaehler as Charles Dansen and Sylvia Garner as Martha Keller. “We are a very close cast, and we play well together on stage,” Mimnall stated. “We have all been acting together before as friends or family members.” Wright said when she and Mimnall started writing “The Deadly Affair,” they planned to create a historical play, similar to their other production this year, “Murder at the Miller Mansion.” As they began writing, however, they changed their focus. “We said, ‘Let’s try something modern,’” Wright recalled, noting that the previous show was held at the historic Miller mansion, 131 Locust St., Columbia. “We had wanted to partner with the church for a long time and try a different venue, so we

When Linda Rannels was young, her parents had a produce stand just outside of Millersville. Linda waited on customers and made baked goods such as cookies and brownies for the stand. This was how Linda’s passion for baking began. Unlike those who learn baking techniques from family members, Linda taught herself everything she knows. “My mother always said she doesn’t love to bake, but she will,” stated Linda. “Whenever we baked together, I always took the lead.” In 2008, Geneva Bakery was born. Rannels and her husband, Randy, converted their garage on Geneva Drive in East Petersburg into a commercial kitchen. From there, Rannels made a living as a made-to-order baker. The business served her well for many years, and in 2015, Geneva Bakery moved into a retail space at 6030 Lemon St., East Petersburg. Coincidentally, the bakery is located in the Real Life Church of

God building, which was the first church building she attended as a child. It is also where her parents were married. At Geneva Bakery, Linda makes everything from scratch. Although Rannels was born and raised in Lancaster County, she does not sell traditional Pennsylvania Dutch goods, such as whoopie pies and shoofly pies. “I think I have a classic baking style,” she explained. “I love a good danish.” Linda noted that ever since Geneva Bakery opened, she has met more people in town than she has in the previous 20 years that she’s lived in East Petersburg. “I love that I get to connect with the community,” she said. “I’ve always loved to bake, so it’s nice to make a living from that.” According to Linda, she has had good luck with staff over the years and the Real

Charles “Chuck” Weymer, a resident of St. Anne’s Retirement Community and a longtime resident of Elizabethtown, was recently recognized for his military service. On Memorial Day, May 31, at 11 a.m., Chuck and four of his brothers attended a ceremony dedicating the Veterans Memorial Wall at Cresson American Legion in Cresson, Chuck’s childhood home. Chuck was a private first class in the U.S. Army, serving from October 1943 to March of 1946. He was at the Battle of the Bulge. Also present at the ceremony were Chuck’s brothers Paul, Edwin, and Donald -

who all also served in the Army - and Leo, who was a member of the Air Force. The Weymer brothers are the sons are Charles P. and Marie Weymer. During the ceremony, each honoree was presented with a plaque. The event also included the national anthem, an invocation, remarks from the Cresson American Legion commander, a keynote address by Cambria County president commissioner Thomas Chernisky, two verses of “America the Beautiful,” and a patriotic medley. Chuck and his wife, Sherri, are the parents of Debra Garrett, wife of Randy, of Elizabethtown.

Chess Team Wins Championship Centerville Middle School (CMS) Chess Team won the Friendship Chess League championship on May 12 against Lancaster Country Day School (LCDS) by a score of 25.5 to 20.5. In addition, Samuel Keener, an eighthgrader at CMS, won a trophy as the top individual player in the league. In January, the 10 top players from the school tournament in seventh and eighth grades competed against six local middle and elementary

schools in a virtual tournament through ChessKids. At the end of the season in March, CMS and LCDS had the two best records and competed in the virtual championship match on May 12. Members of the CMS Chess Team include seventh-graders Patrick Christoffel, Kara Mendenhall, Benjamin Striggle, and Andrew Xie and eighth-graders Ty Funk, Carter Guengerich, Samuel Keener, Adam Mast, Benjamin Ni, and Allan Verkhov.

“Follies” Looks Back At The Past BY CATHY MOLITORIS

If you had a chance to relive the past, would you take it? That’s the question at the center of “Follies,” which will be performed at Susquehanna Stage from Friday, July 23, through Sunday, Aug. 1. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, “Follies” reunites performers from a musical revue that ran between World War I and World War II until closing in 1941. “The theater where the Follies were is being torn down,” said Sharon Boyer, who portrays Heidi Schiller in the show and is also the vocal director. “The characters come together 30 years after the last Follies, in 1971, to reminisce.” The show focuses on two couples - Buddy and Sally Durant Plummer and Benjamin and Phyllis Rogers Stone. The two women were

showgirls in the Follies and, despite their outwardly successful lives, all four people are fundamentally unhappy. The cast features young adults who portray various Follies performers in their younger years. “They are sort of ghosts on stage, playing the performers from the past,” explained choreographer Jill Gagliano. “They are onstage, but they don’t really interact with the current-day characters.” “Follies” is a bittersweet show, said Lorraine Ford, who portrays Phyllis. “The show is a really interesting exploration of life,” she stated. “Wouldn’t you like to look back and watch a movie of your life and see, as a mature adult, how the decisions you made as a 21-yearold are affecting you now?” Gagliano noted that audience members may seem

themselves in the characters. “Think about going to your high school reunion,” she remarked. “You might go in with preconceived notions of who people were or what you thought you would be or who you would become, but now maybe your life hasn’t turned out the way you thought it would.” Lindsay Bretz-Morgan, who plays Sally in the show, said the musical doesn’t have a typical happy ending or saccharine sweetness to it. “The characters in this show are very relatable,” she stated. “These are people who are going through life, but they are not truly happy. They’re just going with the flow of life and where it takes them, and I think a lot of people can relate to that.” Mike Kohler, who portrays Ben, said “Follies” isn’t performed often because it’s a

technically challenging show. “The music is hard, the lyrics are hard, the costumes are elaborate and there’s a lot of different styles of dance in the show,” he noted. Set In Stone: Fossil And Mineral Club To Host Extravaganza The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club will host its fifth annual Christmas in July Extravaganza on Saturday, July 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. After receiving permits from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Tracie opened Raven Ridge Wildlife Center (RRWC) in 2015. Although located in Washington Boro, RRWC treats animals from roughly 17 counties in Pennsylvania. In 2010, there was an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig located in the Gulf of Mexico, which resulted in what is believed to be the largest marine oil spill in history. After hearing about the oil spill, something sparked in Washington Boro resident Tracie Young. “I saw all those animals covered in oil, and I was so upset,” recalled Tracie. “I cried every day.” Tracie applied to help save the animals, but Deepwater Horizon denied her application because she was not a wildlife rehabilitator. Shortly after, one night when Tracie and her husband, Kurt, were driving home from dinner, Tracie witnessed a vehicle hit a goose and drive away. Immediately, the Tracie pulled off to the side of the road to rescue the goose. It took her three days to find a rehabilitation center for the goose, and it was located an hour and a half away. After arriving at Red Creek Wildlife Center in Schuylkill County, Tracie saw brochures for wildlife rehabilitation classes. Soon enough, Tracie realized her dream was to help animals.

Hands-On House welcomes over 55,000 visitors per year and provides in-class programs to another 5,000 kids in schools throughout the region. For any nonprofit, volunteers are essential. As a result of volunteer efforts, HandsOn House was able to increase summer camp scholarships. To date, the museum has issued more than a dozen camp scholarships to children. Scholarships have amounted to about $1,500 so far. Summer camp registration is currently open. Camp will be held until Friday, July 30, for children ages 4 to 10. Each week has a different theme, so activities will vary daily. Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with flexible pickup times. Families are encouraged to sign up for several weeks. Bland and his team have been transforming Hands-On House for over a year by replacing 85% of the indoor exhibits and revitalizing the exterior space to become activity and learning centers for children. of a football field, several heavy picnic tables relocated, and a few dozen fifty-pound bags of rocks put into buckets to create a new rope maze. The football players finished all the tasks within an hour. “ When they were done, they simply asked, ‘What else can we do?’” Bland recalled. “They were a great bunch of guys. When I asked how long they could stay, they said as long as I needed them.” The team then spent another hour painting concrete blocks that would be used to build a nature trail and raking the playground mulch in the rope maze. “You hear a lot about kids and their screens, but I didn’t see a single phone,” stated Bland. “They were focused on getting the job done, helping each other, and helping us.” This was not the first time Hands-On House received help from HHS. Several mornings over the past two months, the HHS Anchor Club tackled overgrown weeds and painted concrete blocks to create a walkabout board game for children. Hands-On House is a nonprofit organization that provides learning through play for children ages 2 to 10. Operating for over 30 years,

The Columbia Economic Development Corporation (CEDC), in conjunction with the Columbia Historic Preservation Society and Rivertown Theatre Productions, will sponsor a walking tour of 15 historic properties in Columbia. The tour will take place on Saturday, Aug. 21, with the first group of tours commencing at 6 p.m. In 2018, the CEDC received a

grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation to promote the CEDC’s targeted economic development implementation plan for the Columbia Downtown Business District. The board chose to recognize buildings in the Old Columbia section of town due to this area’s great historical significance. The buildings on the tour also are located within or in close proximity to the

Combining the research of Chris Vera, president of the Columbia Historic Preservation Society, and the production talents of Rebecca Wright and Sara Mimnall of Rivertown Theatre Productions, the CEDC will present a living history tour of these properties. Actors will portray the original owners of the buildings in period costumes and give a narrative of themselves and the building and its impact on Columbia and its history. The actors will be stationed outside of the property and recite their story from the sidewalk. The tour will begin at the Art Printing Company, 131 Locust St., originally known as the Columbia Bank and Bridge Company, and proceed up have the knowledge to take care of injured wildlife, which is why Tracie encourages members of the public to call RRWC if they come across wildlife in need of assistance. “Do not feed the animals,” stated Tracie. “Put the animal in a dark place to relax and give us

The QA Specialist manages all required food safety and quality checks within the Milk Plant. This position ensures completion of all regulatory and SQF required testing. The Specialist completes daily product quality and shelf-life testing and trains the staff on Best Practices. This position ensures adherence to SQF program and compliance to customer and internal standards in all Food Safety/Quality related issues. The QA Specialist must have experience with computers (Microsoft Ofﬁce), be able to work independently, and have good oral and written communication skills. The QA Specialist will preferably have Food Safety/Quality experience or education. Previous SQF/QA or dairy/milk processing experience helpful. The wage for this position will start at $19.00+/hour and will be based on previous experience and education. Some overtime as needed.
