East Petersburg will hold its annual Summerfest event on Friday, July 11, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. in East Petersburg Community Park, 2575 Graystone Road.
Simply Greek, Scoops, and the East Petersburg-Landisville Lions Club will have food trucks on-site.

a a pop-up tent, said Kristin Troop, who is the chair of the East Petersburg Events Committee. Summerfest had been held on a Saturday in the past. “We’ve had different iterations of this event,” Troop said. “The last two years, we’ve hosted the Uptown Band

Rick Thomson said drum and bugle corps have been described as marching bands on steroids.
It is strictly a brass and percussion unit without woodwind instruments, he explained. Color guards use flags, rifles, and sabres to add motion to the show through their interpretation of the music.
People in Lancaster County and surrounding areas will have the opportunity to see what all the excitement is about while supporting worthy causes.
The Buccaneer Classic drum and bugle corps competition will be held Saturday, July 19, at Hempfield High School’s Georgelis Law Firm Stadium, 340 Mumma Drive, Landisville. Gates will open at 5 p.m.; the show will start at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Hempfield High School Band Booster Club and the reigning Drum Corps International (DCI) all-age world champion Reading Buccaneers.

Lou Starzl likes to say that being diagnosed with cancer is not the end of the road.
In the East Petersburg resident’s case, it was the beginning of a series of long bicycle rides.
Lou plans to pedal 1,000 miles this summer to raise money for the Breakthrough Challenge, which helps fund cancer research at the University of Pennsylvania.
To support Lou’s excursions, go to www.breakthrough-challenge.org,
click on the donate button on the top right of the page, and search for “Lou Starzl.” Lou said 100% of participant-raised funds go to the cancer research pool.
Lou was diagnosed with glioblastoma in December 2020 at the age of 44, and he had brain surgery on Christmas Eve of that year. Glioblastoma is the most aggressive type of cancer that originates in the brain, he said.
In January 2025, Lou was invited to be on a panel for longterm glioblastoma survivors at

“It’s a unique entertainment (activity) for families and people
from Philadelphia. This year, we changed things up and moved it to a Friday night. We’re trying to think of different ways to bring in the community.”
This year, local band Modern Day Pharaohs will perform in the park’s Lancaster Toyota Amphitheater. Modern Day Pharaohs is a three-man band made up of guitar player Shawn Gallagher, drummer Shawn O’Neal, and bassist Scott Kinsey. Gallagher and Kinsey handle most of the vocals, along with some help from O’Neal.
Call 717-892-6818 or email advertising@engleonline.com for more information or to reserve your ad space. Deadline: Monday, July 28 A magazine centered around families, embracing every facet of
“We only have three members, so there’s no place to hide,” Gallagher said. “We’re an instrumentally sparse operation, so we try to make it interesting with quirky arrangements.”
The trio has been performing together for 35 years. Gallagher and Kinsey had been part of a four-man band. In 1990, when Gallagher returned to the area from Penn State and Kinsey came back from Bucknell, they joined with O’Neal to become a three-man group.
Gallagher said the band plays a “melodic garage band sound” popularized in the 1980s and ’90s by Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, The Replacements, and R.E.M.
“Over 35 years, we’ve added some songs to our set list,” Gallagher said. “We have a handful of originals, but we own our role as a cover band. We have to rework some of the songs because we only have three members, and we have fun with that.”
Gallagher lives in Mountville, and his three children attended Hempfield High School. “East Petersburg is right in my backyard, and I am looking forward to having a lot of family and
friends there,” Gallagher said. “It’s a great spot for a gig with a good sound system, and hopefully there will be beautiful weather.”
The Lancaster Toyota Amphitheater was completed in 2018. “Since then, we’ve been able to host a lot more music events,” Troop said. “That’s our goal: to create free family events in our park for our community and surrounding areas.”
Troop noted that thanks to sponsors like Lancaster Toyota and S. Clyde Weaver, the East Petersburg Events Committee is able to host a variety of free events.
Troop said that while Summerfest is designed for adults, a food truck event at the park on Friday night, Aug. 8, will appeal to kids. The start time has not yet been determined.
The East Petersburg Events Committee is partnering with the East
Petersburg Fire Company for the food truck event, and children will be able to explore fire apparatus. Live music will be supplied by local band Vinyl Ventures. The annual Blues Fest will be held in the park from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30. Six bands will perform, and local brewery Mad Chef will host a beer garden.
East Petersburg Days, the highlight of the events schedule, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 16, to Saturday, Sept. 20.
“Our goal is to create these events for people to come out, meet your neighbors, see your friends, and get to know what’s in the community,” said Troop.
“We have a really nice park in East Petersburg.” Go to www.eastpeters burgday.com for more information about East Petersburg events.
Kidmunicate Pediatric Speech Therapy, located at 1725 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, has partnered with Heather Majtyka, OTR/L, to start an affiliate company called Kidnecting Potential. Kidnecting Potential, with offices in Wayne and Lancaster, began treating kids on June 30.
Kidnecting Potential aims to be the leader in pediatric occupational therapy services in southeastern Pennsylvania. Heather Majtyka, OTR/L founder and president, is known for her individualized and neurodiversity-affirming approach. Kidnecting Potential supports children and families through specialized therapy designed to foster growth, connection and meaningful participation in daily routines, in relationships and in the broader community.
Rather than aiming to “fix” behaviors or developmental patterns, the practice focuses on understanding how a child experiences the world and tailoring support to build regulation, confidence and functional engagement.
The Lancaster location offers families access to clinicians with advanced training in sensory integration, DIR/Floortime, motor planning and praxis and sound-based interventions such as Tomatis and Interactive Metronome. These tools are integrated to support self-regulation, attention, coordination and everyday participation that are always grounded in developmental readiness and relationship-based care. Whether a child is navigating sensory or motor differences, transitions or regulation challenges,
the goal is never to mold them into a preconceived idea of “typical.” It’s about supporting their access to the relationships, routines and experiences that matter most, whether that’s joining a game on the playground, making it through a family dinner or feeling confident in a classroom.
In addition to one-onone therapy, Kidnecting Potential offers therapeutic intensives, caregiver education and consultative support to help families carry over strategies into home and community settings. The new Lancaster clinic features a warm, sensory-rich environment that encourages exploration, emotional safety and joy in learning.

of all ages,” said Thomson, who is the event coordinator. “It’s the only drum corps show in Lancaster County and one of the larger all-age shows on the East Coast.”
The lineup features the Reading Buccaneers, Buccaneer Banner Brass, and Buccaneer Alumni Corps from Reading; the Bushwackers and the Raiders from Princeton, N.J.; the Hawthorne Caballeros from Hawthorne, N.J.; Les Stentors from Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada; the Rogues Hollow Regiment from Doylestown, Ohio; the Steel City Ambassadors from Pittsburgh; and the White Sabers from Rochester, N.Y.
The Buccaneer Classic began in 2017 and has been held annually except for COVID-caused cancellations in 2020 and 2021. Thomson said the
Buccaneers host a show in Reading and at one point added a second show in Downingtown. When the organizer of the Downingtown show retired, Thomson and former Hempfield High School band director Bill Powers were tasked with finding a suitable location. Landisville was a natural fit. “There used to be a fairly substantial drum corps influence in Lancaster County,” said Thomson. “There is history there. That gave us something to have a hook for our first show (in 2017).”
The Hempfield Band Boosters were an attractive partner for the Buccaneers. “(Hempfield was) familiar with running a show because they run their own band competition in the fall,” Thomson said. “They knew the basic parts and processes of how
to do it.”
Don Discavage, the vice president of festivals for the booster club, said, “The Classic is always a great day for the Hempfield band program and our boosters. We get to showcase so many amazing performers in the visiting corps and raise money that will support our students’ growth as musicians and performers.”

Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will host a performance by Berks Sinfonietta on Sunday, July 13, at 3 p.m. The chamber orchestra will present “Gershwin Comes Alive,” a celebration of the works of George Gershwin, featuring Church of the Apostles’ director of music ministry, Lars Potteiger, performing “Rhapsody in Blue.”
Founded in 2014, Berks Sinfonietta is an intergenerational orchestra that brings together young
petitions and breaks the units into classes based on the proficiency and the size of the drum corps, Thomson said. The drum corps season starts in December and runs through the first week of August. Thomson noted that drum corps work on one show during that span. “Every corps is unique and has their own style,” he said. “There is everything from rock to classical and everything in between.”

A mural is a massive painting or picture portraying a scene or depicting an idea. It typically adorns a large inside wall or the outside of a building.
For artists, a mural is a creative outlet, self-expression, its own art form. For Heart Artists, a mural can be therapeutic, represent inclusivity and become an avenue for connecting with a community.
outside wall of the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum’s gift shop in Manheim Township. The mural was designed and painted to commemorate Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum’s 100th anniversary.
The bright, colorful mural was officially unveiled during a mural reveal ceremony on May 23. The community mural is designed to be a permanent feature at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum.

“I think (murals) are different for everyone,” said Trisha Goldsborough, Friendship Community’s marketing coordinator. “The (Heart) Artists get to see their work displayed on such a public place. It makes them feel like a big-time artist. Just the community involvement was a positive, getting them out there and meeting other people. It gets them publicity for their art and expands their portfolios.”
Recently, a mural created by Friendship Community’s Heart Artists - local individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism - was hung on an
“Art is a way for everyone to communicate without speaking,” said Goldsborough. “We have a lot of artists who are nonverbal or have trouble communicating (verbally), and this gives them a way to talk. It’s also expressing yourself. Everyone wants to be heard.”
The 8-by-13-foot mural was designed and painted on portable, lightweight parachute material at the Friendship Community’s main office studio at 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, before being transported to Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. The mural took about a week to complete.
“There are a lot of colors and animals,” said Goldsborough. “It makes you happy to look at it. It’s supposed to give you the vibe of the Lititz area and the community we live in.”
“Local muralist Katie (Trainer) worked with us,” Goldsborough continued. “She made an outline on a small piece of paper, and then we went through each step. She traced everything out, and then the Heart Artists painted. The colors were their choices, but they had a general design to follow.”
More than 20 Heart Artists from all over Lancaster County contributed to the community mural.
“They’re really talented individuals who bring out so much joy through their art,” said Goldsborough. “You get that by looking at the mural. Each and every one of them always has a positive attitude. When you look at the mural, you can see how much joy they bring.”
“For me, my favorite part of the project was meeting people and working with the
artists,” she added. “It’s been so rewarding. When we say Friendship Community, it’s true. We’re friends, and we’re a community.”
Founded in 1972, Friendship Community also operates a studio and gallery for Heart Artists at 118 N. Water St., Lancaster. Currently, Friendship Community serves nearly 140 local individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism through its art studios, residential services, day programs and employment support.
“The fact that it’s been going so long shows there’s a need for our services,” said
Goldsborough. “Every single year we’re growing. There aren’t too many organizations out there that do what we do. We’ve just evolved and gained support.”
“We’re trying to be a safe space,” continued Goldsborough. “We’re trying to cultivate capabilities of individuals. We’re giving people independence and showcasing their abilities. We want everyone to have a way to be seen in the world. We want people to feel that they’re a part of their community.”

the University of Pennsylvania’s annual symposium, which also included doctors from around the globe. “That’s what sparked the idea to make my story public and attempt the 1,000 miles,” said Lou. “When I got the invitation (to speak on the panel), that reinforced that I am fortunate to be doing so well almost five years into having glioblastoma. Not a lot of people are this lucky.”
Lou said he came out of the conference with new goals. “I used to hide from the diagnosis,” he said. “Now I hope I can inspire
others struggling with glioblastoma to keep moving forward. It was also a good reminder for me that time is short with this disease. I wanted to finally do something with my story to do something positive while I still can.”
Lou had participated in several fundraisers, including last year’s Breakthrough Challenge, but the symposium was the catalyst to try something bigger. Over about a two-month span, he will take part in a collection of organized rides.
Lou’s journey of 1,000 miles will begin with a single push of the pedal on July 19, when he will embark on the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI). Started by The Des Moines Register newspaper 52 years ago, RAGBRAI is recognized as the oldest, longest, and largest recreational bicycle touring event in the world and is a little more than 400 miles long, according to the event’s website.
Lou will ride in the Central PA Trifecta, which is made up of the Tiffany’s Pink Pedal Ride on Saturday, Aug. 9; the Lancaster Covered Bridge Classic on
Sunday, Aug. 17; and the Three Creek Century on Sunday, Sept. 21.
From Sunday, Sept. 7, to Saturday, Sept. 13, he will cycle in the Keystone State Ride, an approximately 300-mile expedition across Pennsylvania. Lou completed two days of the event last year, and he will attempt to complete the entire event this time.
He will participate in the Breakthrough Challenge Ride in Oley Valley on Sunday, Sept. 14.
Lou is trepidatious after publicly disclosing his plans. “Physically, I’m feeling strong. I’m definitely a little bit nervous, especially after putting my story out in a public fashion,” he said before joking, “There’s no backing out at this point.”
He has prepared for his odyssey by making sure he gets proper rest and nutrition and by cycling between 150 and 200 miles a week. He works out indoors on a trainer bike during the week. On weekends, he rides outdoors in Lancaster County, which he finds cathartic. “When I’m out on the back country roads in Lancaster, I can just clear my head and be out in nature,” Lou said.
He credits his active lifestyle with aiding him in his battle. “It helps a lot,” said Lou. “It’s a balance of staying physically active and focusing on my health a little more.”
Lou was born in Nebraska and grew up in Hershey before attending Bloomsburg University. He returned to the southcentral Pennsylvania area in 2007.
He is grateful for his support system at home, which consists of his wife, Carrie, and their rescue pit bull named Winnie. “When I was diagnosed, Carrie was the one who sat me down and said, ‘Do you want to thrive?’” Lou recalled. “That was really a powerful moment for me. I said, ‘Yes. I want to fight.’”
It’s a fight Lou is committed to continuing. “My health is good,” he said. “With glioblastoma, the general prognosis is very poor. But at almost five years in, I’m extremely fortunate to be able to keep going.”
After eight months of intense workouts, Lou said he thought it was “time to attempt something big,” adding, “The rides themselves are going to somewhat be a celebration and the culmination of all the work I’ve put in to get to this point.”
Lou said there are things he’d like people to take from his story. “Life is short,” he said. “No one knows what might happen tomorrow, regardless of being healthy or not. It’s important to keep working toward your goals. More importantly for myself and other cancer survivors specifically, having cancer is not the end of the road. You just have to keep moving forward regardless. Some of it is what you make of it.”
