Help The Fight Will Hold Banquet

“We are people who help people,” said Lynda Charles, cofounder and president of Help the Fight. “Our mission is as simple as that.” Help the Fight is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping anyone currently receiving breast cancer treatment or anyone in need of screening to detect breast cancer. The organization will host its 13th annual fundraising banquet on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. The event will be held at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.

“This is our main fundraiser for the year, and it’s a blast,” Charles stated, adding that there are a number of giveaway drawings and other opportunities to win prizes.

The evening also includes an allyou-can-eat buffet dinner as well as both silent and live auctions. “We will auction off everything from artwork to quality jewelry, gift baskets, designer handbags and destination trips,” Charles said. “We work really hard to get donations of items. We pound the pavement.”

he Reading Buccaneers and Hempfield Band Booster Club will present The Buccaneer Classic - A Drum & Bugle Corps Competition at Hempfield High School’s Georgelis Law Firm Stadium, 340 Mumma Drive, Landisville, on Saturday, July 16, at 6:30 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m. The event was previously held in 2018, but it was not held from 2019 to 2021 because of inclement weather and the pandemic.

This year’s show will be highlighted by a group of both competition corps and alumni corps headlined by two of Drum Corps Associates’

(DCA) winningest corps, the Reading Buccaneers and the Hawthorne Caballeros from Hawthorne, N.J. Joining them in competition will be the Bushwackers from Princeton, N.J.; the Skyliners from Scranton; and the White Sabers from Dansville, N.Y. The Reading Buccaneer Alumni Corps and the Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni Drum & Bugle Corps will perform in exhibition, bringing back selections from past years. Also performing in exhibition will be Drum Corps International’s the Raiders from Princeton, N.J. Preshow entertainment

will be provided by the Buccaneer Banner Brass ensemble.

Separate ticket fees have been set for reserved seats and for general admission. Handicapped-accessible seating and parking are available.

Help the Fight is an allvolunteer organization that began in 2009, after Charles’ sister-in-law and a co-worker were diagnosed with breast cancer. Charles held a bake sale and raised more than $9,000 with just three weeks to pull everything together. “The community was amazing with their support,” she recalled. “ We saw that there was a want from people who wanted to help our cause and there was a need from people who needed our support.” Since then, Help the Fight has raised more than $1 million for cancer patients. “Unfortunately, too many people are affected by and afflicted with breast cancer,” Charles remarked. “It’s not just a patient disease; it’s a family illness. It affects the whole family.”

Help the Fight provides financial support in a variety of ways tailored to each individual’s needs. “We help with what their greatest need is,” said Susie Dailey, patient coordinator.

“It could be medical bills, rent, insurance, medication, transportation. We have filled oil tanks and put tires on a car. We help

however we can.” Screenings, including mammograms, ultrasounds and genetic testing, are also supported by funds from Help the Fight.

Charles noted that the annual banquet provides not only an opportunity to support the nonprofit, but also a chance to hear from some of the people who have been helped by the organization. “We usually have at least one patient speak,” she stated. “It’s very emotional when the crowd hears their story.” She noted that tickets are limited to 500 this year, to keep the event large enough to raise significant funds but small enough to still feel intimate. “It’s a casual event,” she said. “People can dress up if they want to, or they can dress casually and comfortably. It’s just a night of fun.”

Christmas In July Don’t let the temperature outside fool you. It’s Christmas at Mary Mother of the Church, 625 Union School Road, Mount Joy. The church will hold its second annual Christmas in July bazaar from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 16.

“A lot of people were surprised when we moved our annual bazaar from the fall to the summer last year,” said Claudia Basener, who is organizing the event with Barbara Clingenpeel and Katie Hostetter. “It was so well received. We had about 1,000 people come through.”

Like last year’s event, the bazaar will feature two community-based projects. Stuff the Bus will include a collection of school supplies for children in kindergarten through grade 12, along with unisex sweatshirts and sweatpants for children and adults in sizes small through extra large. Socks for children

in kindergarten through grade five will also be collected. The items will be dispersed to Donegal, Elizabethtown, Hempfield and Columbia Borough school districts. A food bank collection will also be held during the bazaar to benefit the Mount Joy Food Bank and the East Donegal-Conoy Area Christian Food Bank. Donations of non-expired food items as well as grocery store gift cards will be accepted.

Basener noted that anyone who donates three items will receive three tickets for a basket giveaway at the bazaar.

Items up for grabs will include a variety of family fun activities such as tickets to Lake Tobias Wildlife Park, Dorney Park, Laserdome and Go ’N Bananas Family Fun Center. More than 20 vendors will be on-site for the bazaar, including Made by MMOC, which will feature items created by members of the parish. A silent auction

Breakfast and lunch items will be available for purchase, including Miller’s chicken barbecue. Preorders for the barbecue are due by Saturday, July 9, and may be placed by calling the parish at 717-653-4903. A limited number of barbecue meals will be available for purchase at the bazaar.

Proceeds from the bazaar

will be used to support community organizations, Basener said, including local police and fire departments.

“It’s a really fun family day,” Basener said of the bazaar. “There’s a children’s play area and kids can win prizes. We’ll have live music this year as well. It’s just a nice day to be with the Lancaster community and share some fellowship.”

The Education and Scholarship Committee of the Towne Club of Lancaster announced that three students will each receive a $2,000 scholarship to be applied to his or her education at a twoyear technical school or college. The scholarship recipients are Alaina Rodriguez, Billy Nguyen, and Logan Reading. The students and their parents were recognized at a scholarship banquet on May 24.

Rodriguez is a senior at McCaskey High School.

She plans to attend Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences to study surgical technology as well as diagnostic medical sonography.

Nguyen is also a senior at McCaskey High School.

He will study computer science, especially as it

pertains to automobiles. He has been accepted to study at the Temple University campus in Japan.

Reading is a senior at Ephrata High School and is currently enrolled in the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center studying metal fabrication.

He will attend Thaddeus Stevens College.

“Most people say it’s the soil; it’s a sandy-type soil that grows good tomatoes,” said Richard Schock, who is committee co-chair along with Bob Howell and Carl Miller.

“Most people grow stake tomatoes. Jet Star seems to be the most popular variety around here.”

Tomatoes will be on sale, and visitors can enjoy tomato sandwiches along with many other food choices. Menu items will include chicken corn soup, sausage sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, hamburger barbecue, french fries, funnel cakes, soft-serve ice cream and beverages.

Attendees will have an opportunity to win prizes, including a big-screen television and 10 cash prizes.

On July 9, music will be provided by BorderLine, which plays a variety of new and old country music, classic rock and oldies. The Hammer

The Tomato Festival began under the Washington Boro Lions Club. When that organization dissolved, the Washington Boro Fire Company took over the event.

Luthercare presented a total of $36,000 to graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue careers in the field of nursing. Students from schools across Lancaster and Lebanon counties were selected to receive a $1,000 Luthercare Nursing Scholarship.

Recipients were awarded their scholarships during a drive-through reception on May 23 on the campus of Luther Acres, a Luthercare community at 600 E. Main St., Lititz, where Luthercare team members greeted and congratulated the winners.

In November 2020, the WHO released new exercise guidelines for people of all ages. Adults - including older adults and those with chronic conditions or disabilities should get between 150 and 300 minutes a week of moderate to vigorous aerobic activi-

Cutting back need not be complicated, and the following are some simple ways for individuals to save money.

- Address unsecured debt.

Unsecured debt, which can include credit card balances and medical bills, tends to carry higher interest rates than debts that carry a collateral requirement. According to the Federal Reserve, roughly 12.5% of individuals over 50 still have student loan debt, which is another type of unsecured debt. If possible, people over 50 should pay off these debts immediately or make their best effort to pay extra each month so the debts are paid off as soon as possible.

- Pay in cash. It’s not enough to simply pay off unsecured debt like consumer credit. It’s also important to stop accruing additional debt. Individuals over 50 should resist the temptation to use their credit

cards, instead paying with cash or debit cards. Credit card debt is often characterized as a problem for young consumers, but a 2021 report from ValuePenguin found that the median credit card debt among individuals between the ages of 55 and 64 was higher than it was for consumers ages 35 to 44.

Paying in cash, whether it’s with paper currency or a debit card, ensures you’re not digging yourself into debt.

- Re-examine your housing situation. Adults 50 and over who purchased their home in their late 20s or early 30s are likely nearing the maturity date on their mortgages. If so, paying a little extra toward the principal each month will help to pay off the mortgage a good deal earlier than paying the same amount you’ve been paying for years. Although paying extra money each month may not seem like reducing one’s financial load, it will do so considerably over time. For example, the financial experts at Wells Fargo note that individuals with a fixed-rate mortage loan of $200,000 at 4% can cut the term of that

loan by more than four and a half years by paying as little as $100 extra each month toward their principal. Homeowners over 50 who have already paid off a significant percentage of their mortgage loans could bring these loans to maturity much sooner if they start paying more toward principal now. Since housing costs are many people’s greatest expense, removing a mortgage payment from your financial ledger by the time you reach 55 could create significant financial flexibility as you get closer to retirement.

Individuals over 50 can utilize some simple yet effective strategies to reduce their financial obligations as retirement nears.

Making New Friends After 50 The early years of midlife are a hectic time for many people. Around the time people reach their late 30s and early 40s, many of them are balancing the responsibilities of a career and a family. But as people enter their 50s, some of those responsibilities may be less significant, leaving more time for recreational pursuits.

Hobbies and other pursuits outside work are often more fun when enjoyed with friends. People over 50 likely recognize that it’s not always easy to make new friends, even though it’s beneficial to have supportive relationships in one’s golden years. A 2017 study from researchers at Michigan State University found that valuing friendships was a stronger predictor of health and happiness among older adults than valuing family.

Church Posts Concert Series The Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series will continue on Thursdays through Aug. 11 at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. All concerts begin at 7 p.m., with the doors to the sanctuary opening at 6:30 p.m.

The July 7 concert will be presented by John Darrenkamp and friends. Classical, popular, and operatic selections will be offered by Kristin Sims, Amy Yovanovich, Brenten Megee, Christyan Seay, Heidi Shannon, Maggie Riker, and pianist Sue Fry. 3 Dads and a Lad, an a capella group, will perform on July 14. Formed in 2011, the group ’s repertoire ranges from classic barbershop tunes of the Roaring Twenties to ’50s and ’60s doo-wop to patriotic anthems.

Aaron’s Acres held its 12th annual golf tournament at Bent Creek Country Club on May 16.

The event hosted 136 golfers and had almost 70 sponsors, including its event sponsor, Team Trimble. Team Trimble has donated over $100,000 to Aaron’s Acres during its years of partnership. This year, Aaron’s Acres set a fundraising record for the golf tournament, raising $105,510 with the help of contributing sponsors, donors, and golfers.

Aaron’s Acres is a nonprofit organization that provides recreational programming to children and young adults with disabilities in and around Lancaster County. The tournament is Aaron’s Acres’ most profitable fundraising event of the year, and money raised at this event supports yearround programming in Lancaster, Berks, and Dauphin counties.
