Starzi’s Story Is Just Starting

Lou Starzi likes to say that being diagnosed with cancer is not the end of the road.

In the East Petersburg resident’s case, it was the beginning of a series of long bicycle rides.

Lou plans to pedal 1,000 miles this summer to raise money for the Breakthrough Challenge, which helps fund cancer research at the

University of Pennsylvania.

To support Lou’s excursions, go to www.breakthrough-challenge. org, click on the donate button on the top right of the page, and search for “Lou Starzi.” Lou said 100% of participant-raised funds go to the cancer research pool.

Lou was diagnosed with glioblastoma in December 2020 at the age of 44, and he had brain surgery on Christmas Eve of that

year. Glioblastoma is the most aggressive type of cancer that originates in the brain, he said.

In January 2025, Lou was invited to be on a panel for longterm glioblastoma survivors at the University of Pennsylvania’s annual symposium, which also included doctors from around the globe. “That’s what sparked the idea to make my story public and attempt the 1,000 miles,” said Lou.

Three county students are getting an early start on being the few and the proud.

Chase Muchmore and brothers Thomas and Brandon Halbleib are part of the Lancaster County Young Marines, and they are already thinking about pursuing a military career.

Chase is a lance corporal who will be a seventh-grader at Manor Middle School in the fall.

“(Young Marines is) a really cool experience, and you can earn different badges,” said Chase. “It’s kind of like the military. It helps you get ready for the military.”

Chase is following in a family tradition. His brother, Riley McKenzie, was a member of the Young Marines. “I thought, ‘Hey, this is a really neat experience.’ So I wanted to do it,” said Chase. Chase’s dad, Ben Muchmore, served in the Air Force, and Chase’s maternal grandfather, Anthony Arico, served with the Marines.

“I saw Riley going though (the Young Marines), and my dad and grandfather were in the military, so I want to join the military,” said Chase. “I wanted to find out a way I could get ready for the military.”

Chase said he enjoys making new friends in the Young Marines and being part of the group’s color guard, which has worked many events, including Warriors on the Water, Solanco High School graduation, and a Lancaster Stormers game.

Chase proudly pointed to the first ribbon he won for marksmanship four years ago. In addition to firearms safety classes, he has

Lou Starzi plans to ride 1,000 miles this summer to raise money for cancer research.

Young Marines

learned how to operate a boat and how to fight wildfires. “There’s a lot of fun stuff you can do,” he said.

Chase’s mother, Cassie Arico, said, “I’m proud that he is in the Young Marines and that he has become a leader and encourages his fellow Young Marines and other youth. He impresses me with his proudness to be patriotic and not be ashamed to show it. He’s developed a servant’s heart and loves volunteering. He amazes me every day.”

Thomas and Brandon are still categorized as recruits, but both are closing in on the rank of private. Thomas will be a sixth-grader at Farmdale Elementary School.

“I wanted to experience what Marines have to do,” said Thomas. “It’s been pretty good. We get to do some fun activities.” He said he likes making new friends, bowling, and going on hiking trips.

Brandon is a rising fifthgrader at Farmdale Elementary School. “I wanted to get experience and learn more about the Marines and the Navy so I can join the military,” he said. “You get to make friends and go to color guard.”

“As a parent with two boys in the Young Marines, I am very proud of both of

them for committing their time and being a part of something so great,” said Thomas and Brandon’s mother, Helesha Shober.

“Both Thomas and Brandon have shown and expressed interest into wanting to go into the military when they are older, and I think it is a great opportunity for them to further explore their interest.”

The Young Marines, a nationwide organization, is for boys and girls from age 8 to 18 or graduation from high school. The group teaches leadership, teamwork, and discipline, and it advocates for a healthy lifestyle through its Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) efforts.

Cassie said that the Lancaster County Young Marines meet the second Saturday and fourth Sunday of the month for regular drills at VFW Post 3575 in Holtwood or the Marine Corps League in Columbia. The Young Marines participate in parades, veterans’ events, and Toys for Tots and compiled over 2,400 hours of community service in 2024 and 168 hours of DDR during 2024, according to Cassie.

a Master of Librarianship, as well as a Bachelor of Arts from Emory University. She has helped to curate various exhibits on Lafayette and currently serves as the American Friends of Lafayette curator. Church Posts VBS

Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will offer a “Waves of Wonder” vacation Bible school (VBS) on Sunday to Thursday, July 20 to 24, from 6:15 to 8 p.m.

“When I got the invitation (to speak on the panel), that reinforced that I am fortunate to be doing so well almost five years into having glioblastoma. Not a lot of people are this lucky.”

Lou said he came out of the conference with new goals. “I used to hide from the diagnosis,” he said. “Now I hope I can inspire others struggling with glioblastoma to keep moving forward. It was also a good reminder for me that time is short with this disease. I wanted to finally do something with my story to do something positive while I still can.”

Lou had participated in several fundraisers, including last year’s Breakthrough Challenge, but the symposium was the catalyst to try something bigger. Over about a two-month span, he will take part in a collection of organized rides.

backing out at this point.”

He has prepared for his odyssey by making sure he gets proper rest and nutrition and by cycling between 150 and 200 miles a week. He works out indoors on a trainer bike during the week. On weekends, he rides outdoors in Lancaster County, which he finds cathartic. “When I’m out on the back country roads in Lancaster, I can just clear my head and be out in nature,” Lou said.

After eight months of intense workouts, Lou said he thought it was “time to attempt something big,” adding, “The rides themselves are going to somewhat be a celebration and the culmination of all the work I’ve put in to get to this point.”

VBS lessons and activities will be structured around Scripture passages in which water plays a prominent role. Participants will learn Bible stories, do crafts, make snacks, and enjoy games. Evenings will begin and end with worship and songs.

Offerings received during the week will support Lancaster Clean Water Partners, an organization that brings people together to restore and sustain healthy waterways in Lancaster County.

The program is free and open to children age 3 through those who have completed fifth grade. The number of 3-yearolds will be limited, with participants accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Advance registration is preferred but not required. To register, visit https://lancob.org/ or contact the church office at church@lancob.org.

Lou’s journey of 1,000 miles will begin with a single push of the pedal on Wednesday, July 16, when he will embark on the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI). Started by The Des Moines Register newspaper 52 years ago, RAGBRAI is recognized as the oldest, longest, and largest recreational bicycle touring event in the world and is a little more than 400 miles long, according to the event’s website.

Lou will ride in the Central PA Trifecta, which is made up of the Tiffany’s Pink Pedal Ride on Saturday, Aug. 9; the Lancaster Covered Bridge Classic on Sunday, Aug. 17; and the Three Creek Century on Sunday, Sept. 21.

From Sunday, Sept. 7, to Saturday, Sept. 13, he will cycle in the Keystone State Ride, an approximately 300-mile expedition across Pennsylvania. Lou completed two days of the event last year, and he will attempt to complete the entire event this time.

He will participate in the Breakthrough Challenge Ride in Oley Valley on Sunday, Sept. 14.

Lou is trepidatious after publicly disclosing his plans. “Physically, I’m feeling strong. I’m definitely a little bit nervous, especially after putting my story out in a public fashion,” he said before joking, “There’s no

He credits his active lifestyle with aiding him in his battle. “It helps a lot,” said Lou. “It’s a balance of staying physically active and focusing on my health a little more.”

Lou was born in Nebraska and grew up in Hershey before attending Bloomsburg University. He returned to the southcentral Pennsylvania area in 2007.

He is grateful for his support system at home, which consists of his wife, Carrie, and their rescue pit bull named Winnie. “When I was diagnosed, Carrie was the one who sat me down and said, ‘Do you want to thrive?’” Lou recalled. “That was really a powerful moment for me. I said, ‘Yes. I want to fight.’”

It’s a fight Lou is committed to continuing. “My health is good,” he said. “With glioblastoma, the general prognosis is very poor. But at almost five years in, I’m extremely fortunate to be able to keep going.”

Lou said there are things he’d like people to take from his story. “Life is short,” he said. “No one knows what might happen tomorrow, regardless of being healthy or not. It’s important to keep working toward your goals. More importantly for myself and other cancer survivors specifically, having cancer is not the end of the road. You just have to keep moving forward regardless. Some of it is what you make of it.”

Native Plant Kit Sale Posted

To help nurture more watershed-friendly properties, Penn State Extension will offer Master Watershed Steward Watershed-Friendly Native Plant Kits for sale through Sunday, July 13.

The kits are designed to help individuals incorporate more native plants into their property. The pickup locations will include sites in Lancaster, York, Berks, and Chester counties.

The kits contain plant plugs carefully selected from species grown by Kind Earth Grower using locally collected, open-source pollinated seeds and 50% peat-free growing media. Plant plugs are smaller than those typically found in nurseries, allowing for easier transportation and

planting within existing vegetation. The plugs have healthy root systems that should establish this fall so plants can flourish next growing season.

The kit options are the Sunny Dry Bottoms Kit and the Shady Dry Bottoms Kit for drier-soil areas; the Deer-Resistant Kit; and the Groundcover Kit, which contains low-growing plants that will spread, helping to retain soil moisture and block unwanted seeds from soil contact. Single-species kits are also available this year, including native sedges for patches of lawn replacement. All kit options are available in two kit sizes.

Bountiful Kits include five species with five individual plants of each species, for a total of 25 plants.

Container Kits include five species with one plant of each species, for a total of five plants.

Individuals may choose their kit and select the pickup location most convenient to them. Proceeds will support the Master Watershed Steward program in providing volunteer-driven education and restoration work in the region.

More information about the plant kit sale is available at https://bit.ly/ NativePlantKits.

Penn State Extension also offers the opportunity to earn the Master Watershed Steward watershed-friendly certification in collaboration with Nurture Nature Center. Native plants are woven throughout the certification criteria.
