Mountville Students Wax

Eloquent About Historical Figures

Mountville Elementary School fifth-graders put on a living history exhibit for visitors who attended the annual Wax Museum event on May 29.

Teacher Larry Bellew said the project is a combination of the school’s social studies and English language arts curriculums. Students were instructed to choose an influential person and then write a paragraph to justify their selection.

There are four fifth-grade homerooms. Multiple students from a class are not permitted to pick the same individual. This year, two pupils wanted to portray Jackie Robinson. One student turned in his proposal a minute before the other and got to be

the Major League Baseball player who broke the color barrier.

“The biggest thing is to get the students to try to understand how the person they select (had) a positive impact on society,” Bellew said. “How do they influence others?”

“The biggest thing is to get the students to try to understand how the person they select (had) a positive impact on society.”

Students’ efforts to research the person carry the most weight for their grade, Bellew said. “We give them a week to read about the person and take notes. They start by orga nizing the topics, including the challenges they faced, how they overcame those challenges, and their impact on society.”

Teachers walk through the

wax museum to see how well students have remembered their speeches. Posters and costumes are also considered. “They don’t have to be perfect. They just have to try,” said Bellew. He added, “I hope the biggest thing they learn is you can’t do projects like this without doing the background work. You tell them at the beginning of the project, ‘This will only be as good

constructive criticism. “The good thing is when the kids come to meet with you and they think their work is ready to go, if you give them suggestions, they will go back and improve it,” said Bellew.

Student Abel Steinbacher did his project on Albert Einstein. “I think his theory of relativity and his equation E=mc 2 are really influential,” Abel explained. “I got a lab coat because he was a scientist. I wore this wig because when he was older, he was famously known for his white hair.”

Student Riley Stetler portrayed Betsy Ross. “I really like the American flag, and I like the design she made,” said Riley, who added, “We learned that there are a lot of people in history who affect and influence us.”

In June of 2000, members of the Hempfield United Methodist Church Youth Choir took a trip to Naked Creek Overlook on Skyline Drive in Virginia. Now, 25 years later, one of the participants has created a musical production inspired by a true story from the trip, and she’s enlisted one of the youngest travelers from the group to play her character in the show.

“Audience of One” will be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, June 27 and 28, and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. With the book, music and lyrics by Alisa Bair, the show reflects a pivotal moment in the group’s journey.

“A church youth choir opts out of its summer choir tour in favor of a concert, just for God, on a mountaintop,” Bair said, describing the musical’s plot. “While convinced that their trip is a holy invitation, a shoplifting incident and inclement weather threaten to derail their plans and challenge their faith.”

Bair, a graduate of Hempfield High School, was serving as the minister of music and worship as well as the youth choir director at Hempfield United Methodist Church when, in early January 2000, she felt called by God to switch out the big choir tour the group held every other summer in favor of something smaller in scope but potentially larger in impact.

She had recently experienced a personal loss and recalled that the world had just recovered

DHS Class of 1980 Sets Reunion

Student Kloey Appleby did her research project on swimmer Shelley Mann, who overcame polio to win a gold medal in the women’s 100-meter butterfly event at the 1956 Olympics in Australia.

Kloey is also a swimmer and has a medal of her own she earned in a 100-meter butterfly race. “I did some research on famous swim -

mers, and I found Shelley Mann,” she said. “One of my races is the 100 butterfly, and when I saw she did it, I wanted to learn more.”

Kloey said she learned that polio paralyzed Mann’s right leg at the age of 6.

After winning Olympic gold, Mann graduated from Cornell University and taught swimming to blind children.

from the anxiety of Y2K when she asked her choir members to pray to God for direction and what to do for the trip.

“Two mornings later, I heard a strong, non-audible voice in my spirit that stopped me at the top of the stairs and bent me in half in tears,” she remembered, noting that the voice asked, “Will you and the choir give a concert just for Me?”

When she shared her experience at the next choir rehearsal, one of the members, a quiet 12-year-old student, approached her privately about her own similar dream.

“She spilled out her dream confirming what I had heard in my spirit, of a concert just for God on a mountaintop,” Bair said. “She described the sun setting, a babbling brook and Jesus standing there smiling, saying, ‘Everyone who comes will be richly blessed.’”

The trip proved to be meaningful and spiritual for the group, and it not only inspired Bair to write her musical, but it also recon -

nected her with the young choir member, Andrea Heller.

Heller will play Kendra, the youth choir director modeled after Bair, in the production, but that wasn’t the original plan.

“I hadn’t been in touch or even seen her since the original trip,” Bair said.

“But when the professional actress who was singing the part in the staged reading and on the recording had to bow out, we went on a search. A scam message on Facebook Messenger accidentally connected us. In reconnecting, she sent me videos of her leading worship at her church. I was stunned at how well she sang and offered her the part in the show.”

Heller had a family vacation scheduled for opening night but, with her family’s support, delayed her arrival to join the musical. Her family will watch the dress rehearsal before departing, and she’ll meet them after the shows at their vacation spot, just 30 minutes from Naked Creek Overlook.

“She plans to go back there, this time 25 years older with a whole different perspective,” Bair said.

Bair, who has a master’s degree in musical theater writing from New York University, has served as composer and co-book writer/lyricist for another full-length musical that premiered in 2010 with Opera Lancaster.

Creating “Audience of One” alone was challenging, but Bair knew only she could tell her personal story.

She credits Jennifer Feltyformer choir tour mentor, now a professional actress and voice teacher - for providing vital support.

Bair noted that the idea for the musical bubbled up in September of 2020, but she didn’t begin writing, not even sure where it would lead, until March of 2022.

She said she’s worked on the production almost nonstop for the past three years, moving from a singthrough to a staged reading, a cast album and now a full production.

At the rehearsal on June

18, Bair planned to take five minutes to mark the exact moment of the concert, which took place on that date in 2000.

Now living in Maryland, Bair hopes people will be inspired to see “Audience of One” to discover how a concert left a lasting impression on the choir members. The show will feature a cast of 13 adults and 14 youths, performing with a five-piece pit band. It will be directed by Bonnie Bosso, with vocal direction by Felty. Additional staff support includes music director J.P. Meyer, set designer Anne Flinchbaugh, choreographer Marian West and stage manager Elsa Rogers.

“(Audiences) can expect top-notch local/regional talent bringing to life a story that will touch their hearts, inspire their spirits and have them singing the tunes on their way out!” Bair said.

Tickets for “Audience of One” may be purchased in advance at www.thejunc tioncenter.com/events or will be available at the door.

Visitors to LCAA Art Exhibits Will Choose the Winning Entries

You be the judge.

Members of the general public will decide which pieces of art win awards in the Summer Challenge: Media Wars competition, which will be held this summer at the Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg. There is no charge for admission.

Gallery director Carol Herr calls the challenge “a progressive exhibit” because it gets bigger as the summer goes on. “Every two weeks there will be new things to see,” she said.

Summer Challenge: Media Wars will run from Sunday, June 29, to Friday, Sept. 5. The opening reception will be held June 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. Beach Day at the LCAA is scheduled for Sunday, July 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to wear beach attire. There will be tropical punch, cupcakes, and fruit.

Ice Cream Day at the LCAA will be held Sunday, Aug. 10, from 1 to 4 p.m. The closing reception, including the presentation of awards, is slated for Sept. 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitors can vote for award winners by buying ballots, which will also serve as an

entry into a drawing to be held at the end of the show.

The person with the winning ticket will receive Herr’s painting “Shade Tree Garden Shed.” Herr estimated it took 35 hours to complete the oilon-linen work. “We’re always looking for ways to fundraise,” she said. “I thought if we were going to charge for the ballots, it would be nice to give away the painting at the end.”

An award-winning artist, Herr is a native of the Buck in East Drumore Township. She graduated from the York Academy of Art and studied at the Art Students League in New York City. Her contemporary impressionistic landscape paintings have appeared in local and national exhibits.

In addition to choosing a favorite artist, voters will select their favorite medium from three categories: oil and acrylic; watermedia, which includes watercolor, tempera, gouache, or mixed media made up of water-based media; and other media and 3D, which includes pastel, drawing, encaustics, printmaking, sculptures, ceramics, wood, jewelry, and glass. LCAA

for artists to bring their works to the LCAA, with each occasion having a theme. Thursday, July 10, to Sunday, July 13, will be for waterworks, subjects that depict water in any form. On Thursday, July 24, to Sunday, July 27, the LCAA will accept “red-hot subjects,” meaning an item that includes the color red or things that are hot. The theme for Thursday, Aug. 7, to Sunday, Aug. 10, is “field of dreams”; works should feature fields and farms or baseball-related subjects. Anything goes for the final drop-off dates on Thursday, Aug. 21, to Sunday, Aug. 24.

This competition is open to artists 17 years of age and older. There is a small entry fee per piece. LCAA membership is not required. Artists decide if their works are for sale. LCAA receives a 30% commission for each sale. Works must conform to LCAA exhibition guidelines and must be 55 inches or smaller in any direction. Artists can enter between one and four pieces at each drop-off theme. Works may be picked up Saturday, Sept. 6; Sunday, Sept. 7; and Thursday, Sept. 11, through Sunday, Sept. 14. There will also be a Children and Teen Edition with the theme “What I Did This Summer!” and two

age groups: 7 to 12 and 13 to 16. Drop-offs may be made during regular LCAA hours, Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. The entry deadline is Aug. 24. There will also be awards presented in the these categories. Go to www.lcaaonline .org for more information about the Lancaster County Art Association.

“It’s a beautiful facility to encourage the arts,” said LCAA publicity chair Patricia Keller. “We always have beautiful works of art here, and we like for people to come out and appreciate what’s here. It’s a golden treasure.”

Reading Railroad Days Planned

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will highlight the Reading Railroad during Reading Railroad Days on Wednesday, July 2, to Sunday, July 6, and Wednesday, July 9, to Saturday, July 12. Reading Railroad Days will take place during regular museum hours and be included in the regular museum admission.

A detailed HO-scale model train layout of the Reading Railroad, operated by members of the Reading Company Technical & Historical Society, is a centerpiece in the museum’s climate-controlled Rolling

Stock Hall. Visitors also may view Reading Company equipment from the museum’s collection, including the 107-year-old tank engine No. 1251, multiple unit commuter car No. 800, Crusader observation car No. 1, and the 187-year-old Rocket steam locomotive. Artist Peter A. Lerro Jr. will display and sell his original railroad paintings and reproductions.

In its heyday, the Reading Company was a multifaceted industrial giant. Originally established as the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad in 1833 to transport anthracite coal, the

94-mile line evolved into a large corporation serving eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Operations included coal mining, iron making, canal and sea-going transportation, and shipbuilding. With its complex of shops for locomotive and car building and repair, as well as constant advances in railroad technology, the company held a position of leadership in the railroad industry for over a century.
