Stacy Lewis, director of Lancaster County’s Thrive to Five program, formerly Head Start, has been named a 2020 BOLD “Game Changer” leader by the National Head Start Association (NHSA). In early spring, NHSA named 14 individuals as 2020 BOLD prize winners in recognition of their extraordinary leadership in response to the unique circumstances of the global pandemic.
Lewis was honored for her bold leadership in preserving Early Head Start and funded preschool spaces in the community. Between March and October 2020, the program successfully licensed two new facilities, took over two programs that were closing their doors, preserved the care options for families that would have been displaced by these programs, and retained more than 100 funded spaces for children birth to age 5 in Lancaster, while offering continued employment to more than 20 early childhood professionals.
Underwritten by the Ford Foundation, the 2020 BOLD Leadership Initiative rewards leadership brilliance demonstrated in the Head Start field during the school year. Grand Prize and Game Changer category winners will have the opportunity to participate in a series of best practice leadership conversations with six Head Start BOLD alumni, Head Start alumni who have excelled and demonstrated exemplary leadership in their respective fields.
NHSA will share the insights and takeaways from the BOLD Leadership Initiative with the Head Start field with the launch of the BOLD Leadership Summer Series, a timed release of prerecorded videos and webinars between May and Labor Day.

The Center for Creative Exploration (CCE) at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D), 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will host youth and pre-college classes this summer.
Over three weeks in July, beginning on Monday, July 12, the CCE will host dozens of weeklong, in-person youth art classes. Students in grades one to nine can take morning, noon, and afternoon classes, choosing from a variety of offerings in each timeslot. The daily schedule allows time for supervised lunches and snack breaks on campus between classes. This year, classes will return to an in-person format.
Apart from foundational classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking, this summer features a number of new classes on more specific topics, such as Animal Specimen Drawing, Urban and Public Art, Tabletop Game Design, Creating Art in Photoshop, and Exploring Cultures Through Craft.
To better help parents balance work with their children’s time in camp, CCE has partnered with co-working space The Candy Factory, Warehouse D, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, to offer a discounted weekly rate for adults with children in art classes. Parents are invited to drop their children off for camp in the morning, walk or drive two blocks to The Candy Factory to work, and then pick their children up when classes end.
The pre-college courses are designed for students in ninth through 12th grades, allowing them to earn college credit. The two-week intensive classes with professional artists and faculty will be offered on campus or online or via a hybrid option. Classes will begin on July 12 and will run in two consecutive two-week sessions, finishing by Friday, Aug. 6.
Among the pre-college options are foundational classes in figure drawing, observational painting, color theory, 3D modeling in Autodesk Maya, and portfolio preparation. Other pre-college classes focus on graphic design/visual branding, concept art, digital painting in Adobe Photoshop, video production, creative writing, introduction and advanced 2D animation in Adobe Animate, and printmaking.
For a complete week-byweek schedule or to register, visit www.pcad.edu/cce.

MSTRC Awards Scholarships
Twelve individuals were recently awarded scholarships from the Merit Shop Training and Research Center (MSTRC). The $14,500 in scholarships for the 2021-22 academic year brings the total to $550,350 that has been awarded by MSTRC since its inception, helping students entering a career path in the construction industry.
The purpose of the Merit Shop Construction Scholarship Program, sponsored by ABC Keystone and administered by the MSTRC, is to assist individuals seeking to further their education in careers in construction. To be eligible, applicants must either be a permanent resident in the chapter’s service area or be applying to or attending a chapter servicearea trade school, college, or university program that is directly related to a construction career. Programs include skilled trades, engineering, architecture, and construction management.
Students are evaluated on recommendations, academic achievement, initiative, a written essay and community and extracurricular activities. The highest-level scholarships, each a $2,000 award this year, are given in honor of the late Richard Honabach, former ABC Keystone executive director. This award was established in 2000 in memory of his years of dedicated service to ABC.
This year’s recipients include local residents Anne Russell of Landisville, $2,000 Richard Honabach Award; Cole Snavely of Lititz, $1,000; Westin Kolaric of Elizabethtown, $750; and Carter Snavely of Lititz, $750.

The Pennsylvania Make It With Wool Contest will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2. The contest will be held in the PA Preferred Banquet Hall at the Farm Show Complex, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. The contest is open to anyone who sews, knits, or crochets garments with wool or other animal fibers.
Expert judges will handle the garments and meet with the contestants. Judging is based on several criteria, including appropriateness to contestant’s lifestyle, fit and overall appearance, coordination of fabric/yarn with garment style and design, the contestant’s presentation, construction quality, creativity in design and use of wool, and the garment’s conveying and promoting the beauty, comfort, and versatility of wool.
Contestants will be divided into age categories. All fabrics or yarns used in the body of the garment must be 60% or more animal fiber. Interfacings, linings, and trims do not need to be wool.
The Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association and other donors will provide the funding for prizes for the winners in each category. The winner in the Junior division, for youths ages 13 to 16, and the winner in the Senior division, for those ages 17 to 24, will be eligible to compete at the National Make It With Wool contest to be held in San Diego in January 2022.
There is a registration fee, plus an additional testing fee per fabric/yarn used. To request the registration form and other information, contact Linda Siegel at 717-2741197 or linda@lebaweb.com. All who register will receive a piece of Pendleton wool. To learn more, visit www.makeitwithwool.com.
Troutman Earns All-State Honor
Brandy Troutman, a member of the Royals field hockey team at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), Harrisonburg, Va., was recently named to the AllState First Team, voted on by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Troutman is a junior from Mountville.
She was also selected to the All-ODAC Second Team after the season, and she collected ODAC Player of the Week and Royals Athlete of the Week during the season.
Troutman was a consistent threat on both sides of the field to help lead the Royals to one of their best seasons in a decade, finishing .500 and just narrowly missing the postseason. For the second season in a row, Troutman led the nation in defensive saves, this time being alone at the top with eight. Troutman collected 17 defensive saves in the 2019 season to share the lead in the nation and break EMU’s single season record.
During a three-game stretch, Troutman made the gamewinning goal in each game, finding herself on top of the national leaderboard for all of Division III.
This is the second time Troutman has been selected to the All-State Team, having been selected to the Second Team after the 2019 season.

Freddie Mac Honors Northwest Bank

Freddie Mac recently announced the winners of its Home Possible RISE (Recognizing Individuals for Sustained Excellence) Awards. Northwest Bank earned the Home Possible RISE Award in the Home Possible RISE Award for New Originator category.
An annual program, RISE salutes Freddie Mac’s top clients across multiple categories for excellence with the Home Possible mortgage, Freddie Mac’s lending solution for very low- to lowincome homebuyers.
In 2020, Northwest Bank made homeownership possible for more than 195 families across Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Indiana through the Home Possible mortgage.
The Home Possible RISE Awards combine volume from national Home Possible and Home Possible Advantage mortgage options. Lenders must be active Freddie Mac sellers/servicers, and correspondent lenders and brokers must originate through those sellers/servicers. Freddie Mac reviewed 2020 data and recognized the top organizations in several categories.

Anchor Club Wins Award
The Hempfield High School (HHS) Anchor Club, a youth service organization, was named Anchor Club of the Year by the Northeast Potomac District of Pilot International. The HHS club also earned second place for clubs with 41 or more members at the international level this school year.
The HHS Anchor Club helped with many service projects both in the school district and the community, such as organizing food and supplies that supported 44 families via the winter holiday giving project, writing pen pal letters and making videos for nursing home residents, writing over 260 cards to HHS staff for World Kindness Day, decorating HHS hallways to positively impact school culture, and making to-go meals at a local church. Several projects supported the club’s sponsoring organization, Pilot Club of Lancaster.
The HHS Anchor Club is currently assembling 100 treat bags to provide to frontline workers at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. The club will continue to help at Handson House with outdoor projects throughout the summer.
