“Dance is all of those things at once,” said Esther Pujol, founder and head teacher at Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance.

“Irish dance is an incredible form of exercise and athletic training, but it is also an art form that allows dancers to express emotion, creativity and personality.

Each of our dancers start Irish dance with one of these goals in mind, but after practicing for years, it becomes all of them.”

Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance will conduct this year’s edition of its annual summer camp from 9 a.m. to noon daily during the week of Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26, at the Celtic Center of Lancaster, 1285 Manheim Pike. The camp is open to students between the ages of 5 and 17, from beginners to advanced dancers.

This year’s sold-out show welcomes all makes and models of vehicles, with 86 trophies awarded across a variety of categories, including Best of Show and the Barry Doutrich Memorial Trophy, named for the show’s founder.

“Every year, this show feels like stepping back into the best parts of our past,” Resch said. “You’ll see the car you drove in high school, the one your dad taught you to drive in or the one you always dreamed about.

These vehicles carry stories - first dates, family road trips, late-night cruises and memories that connect generations.”

This year ’s show also coincides with two historic celebrations.

“Columbia is celebrating its 300th anniversary, and the opening ceremonies take place the night before our show,” Resch said. “At the same time, America is celebrating its 250th anniversary. With both milestones happening together, we’re encouraging everyone to wear red, white and blue and really show their patriotism and community pride.”

Several veterans organizations will be present, including Vietnam Veterans of America, the Navy Club, the Lancaster County Marine Corps League Toys for Tots and the Young Marines.

“It means a lot to have the veterans with us,” Resch added. “Their presence reminds us that our freedoms - and the celebrations we enjoy - are possible because of the men and women who served.”

At 11:30 a.m., Boy Scout Troop 35 will lead a flag ceremony, followed by the national anthem and engine revving at noon.

A Kids Pit Stop located in the parking garage at CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, 401 Locust St., will feature face painting, crafts and fun for kids, plus free toy car giveaways by Columbia Borough Police.

“Thunder on the River is a family event,” Resch said. “Kids love the crafts and face painting, parents love the cars, and everyone loves the energy. And for the little ones, nothing compares to walking up to a police officer and getting a free Hot Wheels or Matchbox car. It’s a small gesture that creates a big memory.”

Benefit Auction to Support Clinic The Clinic for Special Children (CSC), a nonprofit medical practice that provides affordable health care to children and adults with rare genetic disorders, will hold its 35th annual Lancaster County Benefit Auction on Saturday, June 20, at the Leola Produce Auction, 135 Brethren Church Road, Leola. The auction will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is free and open to the public. A breakfast buffet will open at 6:30 a.m.

T he items to be auctioned include handmade quilts, handcrafted furniture, new bedroom suites, toys and collectibles, storage sheds, lawn furniture, crafts, farm supplies, and gift certificates. The event will also offer a silent auc-

tion with unique items for bids. A variety of food will be available, including barbecue chicken, pork sandwiches, subs, french fries, freshly made pies, doughnuts, whoopie pies, and ice cream.

The funds raised from the annual benefit auctions provide nearly half of the CSC’s annual operating budget and allow the clinic to continue to provide affordable, specialized care to families facing rare genetic diseases. Each year, seven auctions across the countr y are held to support CSC. Since 1990, these auctions have raised close to $22 million to support the CSC ’s mission. Spectator parking for Thunder on the River will be available on surrounding streets and in designated lots, including Holy Trinity Church, Janson Park, Columbia Church and

Handicap parking will be available on North Fourth Street between Locust and Walnut streets.

Thunder on the River benefits the Columbia Borough Fire Department for the purchase of a new ladder truck and the Columbia Lions Club vision and eyeglass program. Since 2014, the Lions have donated $84,200 from the car show to local nonprofits.

Resch noted that the show is always held the third Saturday in June, which usually falls the day before Father’s Day. “It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate the fathers, grandfathers and father figures who’ve shaped our lives,” he said. “When you walk through the show, you’ll see that spirit everywhere: multi-generational vehicles restored by fathers and sons or even fathers and grandsons, families attending together and people proudly sharing the stories behind the cars that have been passed down through generations. It’s tr uly a family -friendly event, and that sense of tradition and community is a big part of what makes the show special.”

If the walls of Historic Salem United Church of Christ could talk, what would they say? Would they recall when the first German-speaking people gathered in the building for worship in 1803? Would they remember when the cornerstone of the present building at 324 Walnut St. was laid in 1860? Or would they celebrate the day the first woman was elected to the church council in 1949?

A s Columbia’s oldest church, Salem UCC has impacted generations of people who came together to celebrate their Christian faith in an open and affirming space. But all good things must come to an end, and on May 24, the church - affectionately known as “Olde Salem” held its last service.

“This church has meant so much to this community over the years,” said pastor Mark Harris. “I have no doubt that there will be an empty space in the community now.”

The decision to close was not made lightly, said Robert “Scott” Bollinger, who serves on the church council. T he K eystone Conference UCC began suggesting closure even before Harris was hired almost a decade ago.

T h e c o n fe re n c e w a s concerned about the turnover of ministers and the dwindling membership, but the congregation was determined to stay the course. The members provided materials showing the church’s activity in the community and completed a program organized by the conference to strengthen

the church.

“We tried a lot of different things, but COVID was really the beginning of the end for us,” Bollinger said. “About two years ago, I came to council and said, ‘We’ve got to put an end date on this.’ We were determined to get pastor Mark ordained so he could look for another job.”

Harris was ordained in early May and is in the process of determining his next steps with his family, looking for positions as far away as North Carolina and Vermont.

Hilary Smith, who serves as the council treasurer, emphasized that closing the church had nothing to do with financial concerns.

“We’ve been good stewards of our money,” she said. “We have really generous members, and since I’ve been treasurer, over 12 years, we’ve never had to take out a loan.”

But dwindling membership hurt, and an aging congregation didn’t see much of a future for the church.

“Since I’ve been here, most of the same people have been on the church council and have done the bulk of the day-to-day work of the church, which gets wearing after nine years,” Harris said. “Generally, you serve for two or three years, and then someone else takes over and you get a break. Nobody here has gotten a break in quite a long time.”

With under 100 members on the books and only a dozen or so who actively attend, Salem had become too small to survive. The church is in talks with merging its congregation

with Trinity Reformed UCC in Mountville, which happens to be a church plant from Salem UCC. Keystone Conference will sell the building after the members clean out what they ’re keeping , which could take months.

Choosing to hold its last service on Pentecost - the “birthday” of the church was intentional, said council member Karen James, who added, “It’s a season of new beginnings.”

“I never felt like I didn’t belong here,” Smith said.

“I did visit some other churches when my girls were younger, but I came back. When you’re a lifelong member of a church, it’s difficult to go somewhere else.”

Bigler recalled that some of her favorite memories at Salem include Advent Family Nights, when the members would decorate the church and sing Christmas carols.

“I always felt like this church was my home away from home,” she said. “I was thankful to my parents for raising me up in a church.”

Member Peg g y Rupp, who has attended for 67 years, recalled relying on her church family when she faced personal trials. “ The people of Salem were here for me,” she said.

Over the years, the church has hosted numerous community groups, including Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, Narcotics Anonymous and Homes of Hope. Before the Columbia Dream Center opened, Salem served as a winter shelter with other local churches.

It once had a very active Sunday school for people of all ages, held a holiday bazaar for more than 30 years and organized ice

cream socials and potpie dinners.

Now those events will be memories, Bollinger said.

“I look at the people here, and I’ve known these people for a long , long time,” he said. “It’s going to be ver y hard to say goodbye.”

Serving at Salem became Har r is ’ f irst job since finishing seminary, and he credits the experience with teaching him about ser vant leadership and community. “ W hat I hope people remember about Salem is how long it’s survived past people’s expectations, and how much of an impact it’s made on the time that it’s been here,” he said. “This church has been deeply meaningful for the people of Columbia.”

“I am also navigating life with my 16-year-old dachshund, Sullivan, who has dementia,” she said.

“Caring for him has shown me firsthand how much support aging pets - and their people - truly need.

From medication routines and environmental adjustments to the emotional weight of anticipator y grief, there are so many layers families are trying to manage.”

These experiences ultimately led Page to become a certified end-of-life pet doula and create Willow Bridge Crossings in 2025.

“My backg round has given me experience not only in animal behavior and

care, but also in supporting people through stressful and emotional situations involving their pets,” she said. “Becoming an end-oflife pet doula felt like a natural extension of the work I’ve already spent much of my life doing - caring for both animals and the humans who love them.”

Each client’s experience is different, she said, but all start with a free phone consultation to find the b est s up p or t for each situation.

“Some people are looking for guidance with an aging pet, while others may need emotional support surrounding a recent diagnosis or upcoming euthanasia,” Page said.

“From there, we discuss what services would feel most helpful and supportive for them.”

Page hopes her services will shine a light on the emotions that come with loving and losing a pet.

“I think one of the most important things I want people to understand is that grief over an animal is real and valid,” she said.

“These relationships are incredibly deep, and the loss of a pet can impact s o m e o n e j u s t a s p ro -

foundly as the loss of any beloved family member.”

She also wants to convey the message that providing pet doula services is about more than navigating a pet’s death.

“End-of-life support is not just about the final day,” she said. “In many cases, support begins much earlier - during the aging process, after a difficult diagnosis or when families begin noticing changes in their pet and feeling uncertain about what comes next.”

W hen ser ving as an end-of-life pet doula, Page hopes to help reduce some of the overwhelming and isolating aspects of a pet’s death, including the guilt and emotional exhaustion people can experience.

“My role is not to replace veterinary care, but to walk beside families through the emotional and practical parts of the journey with compassion and without judgment,” she said.

“Sometimes people simply need someone who understands how profound this bond and loss truly are.”

She knows what it’s like to lose a pet and to feel alone in her grief.

“A f t e r u n e x p e c t e d l y losing my soul dog , Jackson, I found myself facing a kind of grief that many people didn’t fully understand,” she recalled.

Students Honored at International Competition Three Lancaster County high school seniors were named finalists at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which was held in Phoenix from May 9 to 15. This achievement was a first in the 73-year history of the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair (NMSEF), which ser ved as the qualifier for the national competition.

ISEF is an international science competition for precollege students. The three Lancaster County students were among more than 1,700 students from 65 countries who participated this year. Greater than $7 million in awards and prizes were distributed at ISEF. Lancaster Country Day School senior Benedikt Kienle earned first place in the Chemistr y category, as well as receiving a full tuition scholarship to Westlake University, an all-expenses-paid trip to Sweden during Nobel Prize week, and two auxiliary awards: the Dudley R . Herschbach SIYSS Award and the second award from the American Chemical Society. Kienle’s winning project , “New Green C hemistr y Ir idium Catalysts,” had won

The camp is expected to host dancers from all over Lancaster County, as well as surrounding counties such as York, Lebanon, Chester and Dauphin. The Irish Dance summer camp is in its 10th year of existence.

“The participants are passionate young dancers who are eager to learn, improve and connect with others who share similar interests,” said Pujol, a resident of Manheim Township.

“Some are highly competitive dancers, while others simply dance because they love it.”

Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance presents nearly 250 performances each year, many of which are given over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The school also hosts two Irish dance competitions each year.

Zimmerman Appointed as EMM Board Chair Lisa Zimmerman began serving as the new board chair of Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) on May 8. Lisa has been a member of the board of directors since 2019.

Lisa and her husband, Lee, ser ved with EMM in Kosovo from 2006 to 2009. Prior to ser ving with EMM, Lisa served with Mennonite Central Committee in Akron from 2002 to 2006. In addition to serving internationally, Lisa has also assumed several roles on Mission Support Teams for other EMM workers.
