Chorus To Host German Choral Concert

Music is a universal language,” said Linda Husler, president of the Lancaster Liederkranz chorus, when describing the upcoming concert event that the chorus will host on Saturday, June 18, at 3 p.m. at Centerville Middle School, 865 Centerville Road, Lancaster. The concert, which will feature German choruses from throughout the northeastern area of the United States, is being presented by the Nordöstlicher Sängerbund (NOSB), also known as the Northeastern Sängerbund of America. The event will be the 53rd NOSB Sängerfest, which is the German word for a singing festival. “The last (Sängerfest) was in 2018 in the Philadelphia area at a
get up together on the stage and perform five numbers in a mass chorus.” To prepare for the combined chorus performance, the various groups will rehearse earlier in the day prior to the concert. “At the rehearsal we will put everyone in their proper voice section - soprano, alto, tenor and bass,” said Husler. “All the groups have the music ahead of time and they know the music, so it’s not that hard to put the five numbers together.” The large, combined choir will be accompanied by Lancaster Liederkranz chorus pianist Bill Rhoads. The chorus is part of the Lancaster Liederkranz German Cultural Club. Established in 1880, the club’s goal is to preserve German singing, dancing, music, language and customs. The club’s headquarters is located at 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim.
“Anyone can join, but most people have a German heritage. We have about 2,000 members,” Husler noted. In addition to its German restaurant and social club, the Liederkranz offers four cultural groups. In addition to the chorus, the club has a Hobby Chor, an allmale chorus, and two German folk dance groups. The club holds several special events throughout the year, including a Sommerfest in June, a Parrot Fest in July, an Oktoberfest in September and a Christkindlmarkt in December. Tickets for the upcoming concert will be sold at the door. There will be separate prices for adults and for children age 12 and younger. It’s a festival that is held every two to three years,” explained Husler. “We were supposed to host in 2020, but COVID shut it down.” She noted that the concert was also canceled in 2021 because of the pandemic and that the next event will rotate to a different German club. For this year, seven choruses will perform individually and then combine for the finale, which will conclude with a performance of “God Bless America” in English. “There are going to be seven German choruses represented that will be singing individually. They will each do a 15-minute segment of their own repertoires. All of it is basically in German,” said Husler. “Our chorus, since we are the host, will perform last. We will perform music by German composers like Beethoven and Brahms and German folk songs. All seven groups will then

The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will celebrate its 85th anniversary by holding an art show featuring 5-by-7-inch original paintings donated for sale by its members. The show, themed “Lancaster County Color,” opened on June 12 and will be on exhibit through July 7 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. The paintings, which will be on display in the Kauffman Gallery at the LCAA, will be hung on the walls according to color, creating a large color wheel. “Whatever the predominant color, it will go on that wall,” explained LCAA member Patricia Keller. “We have gotten animals, like horses; flowers; some abstracts; and fruits and vegetables. We have the gamut of things. Our artists did

History will come to life along the Susquehanna River during Riverfest. The event will be held from Friday, June 24, through Sunday, June 26, and will highlight one of the biggest moments in the history of the region - the burning of the covered bridge spanning the river during the Civil War. “Riverfest is an opportunity to take one big moment in history and blow it up into all these pieces,” said Hope Byers, director of the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center. The weekend will kick off with Fourth Friday in Wrightsville, Columbia and Marietta, with restaurants offering “fiery” food and drink options. Friday will also feature “Bridge Burners: Who Were They?” This event, a walking tour of the Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., will focus on the five men who lit the fuse. Tours will be offered on June 24 and Saturday, June 25, at 6 p.m. and on June 26 at 11 a.m. On Saturday, the Bridge Burner Challenge Run and Paddle Race will begin at 9 a.m. at Columbia River Park,
and a River Expo will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the park, featuring outfitters and organizations focused on river history and recreation. A variety of lectures will be offered in the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., and a river walk will be held at 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, spotlighting history of all six local bridges that have crossed the Susquehanna River. Riverfest trolley tours will be offered on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., leaving from Columbia Crossing. On Sunday, the festivities will include Civil War re-enactors from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wrightsville Commons Park, as well as a Northwest River Trail geology walk with Jeri Jones, leaving at noon from Columbia Crossing. Susquehanna National Heritage Area and Shank’s Mare Outfitters will offer Paddle the Battle kayak tours at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. Tours will leave from the lawn at John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville. At 4 p.m., York County historian Jim McClure will present a lecture on the Underground Railroad and its relationship with the Susquehanna River. From 5

This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. Pet Pantry of Lancaster County is teaming up with national nonprofit Petco Love and Skechers to highlight the fun in fostering pets. Pet fostering is important for animal shelters, particularly during the busy summer season. According to the Pet Pantry Rescue Team, the greatest stressor for dogs living in a kennel environment is social isolation. By helping to assure a dog that it is safe and will continue to be cared for and loved, a foster volunteer can mitigate the animal’s stress. The dog program at the pet pantry is 100% foster-based. Dogs do not live in kennels; they are placed in homes. However, this method means that the organization can only save as many dogs as it has foster families to place them with. Throughout June, Petco Love will work with its network of partners nationwide to share the fun aspects of fostering while helping pet parents get through their foster pet goodbyes. Petco Love is
taking a humorous approach to saying goodbye to foster pets by holding a #MyFosterBreakUp story contest featuring Foster Breakup Kits giveaways and a curated playlist to help foster pet parents through their goodbyes. Kits include cozy, festive socks from the BOBS from Skechers philanthropic footwear collection; a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream; tissues; the official Petco Love Foster Breakup Spotify Playlist; and a T-shirt that says, “Foster Pets Are Here for a Fun Time, Not a Long Time.” Foster pet parents can enter to win by sharing their breakup letter from their foster pet on Instagram using the hashtag #MyFosterBreakUp through Thursday, June 30. Library Plans Activities Middletown Public Library has announced a variety of summer programs for people of all ages. People of all ages are invited to sign up for the Summer Reading Program, which has the theme “Oceans of Possibilities.” Separate categories are available for children, teens, and adults. AWC Celebrates Anniversary A Woman’s Concern (AWC) Pregnancy and Parenting Resource Center, 1102 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, marks 50 years of service in the Lancaster community this year. Founded in 1972, the organization has provided services to more than 20,000 women, men, and families over the past five decades. AWC kicked off a year of 50th anniversary festivities by hosting a celebration event at Lancaster Bible College on April 20. Additional events to highlight the center’s anniversary are
planned throughout the year, including Diaper Day, a free diaper giveaway event for families, this summer, plus the annual fall gala for supporters and a giveaway drawing for a car. AWC is located near downtown Lancaster, and its trademark purple doors remain open to supporting the community through free, confidential care and assistance for women and families in need. The center’s team of certified medical professionals provides free medical services relating to pregnancy and repro-
ductive health, including pregnancy testing, nondiagnostic ultrasound exams, and limited STI testing. In addition to medical services, educational programming is an integral part of AWC’s programming before, during, and after pregnancy. Educational services include a catalog of nearly 150 parenting education classes, group workshops, fatherhood classes and support, sexual health classes, and more. Through AWC’s Strong Families parenting education program,
mothers and fathers can develop and hone parenting skills while earning new baby necessities such as diapers, wipes, formula, clothes, car seats, strollers, and cribs from the center’s baby boutique. Currently, a bilingual team member is available to provide support in Spanish. All programs and services are provided at no cost to clients. The Giant Company dietitians will launch a virtual summer camp series, where each week they will highlight recipes and meal ideas related to topics such as space, history, movies and sports. All classes will be offered free and live via Zoom throughout June, July and August. Mini Chef Mornings will be held every Monday at 10 a.m. where children age 6 and under can enjoy reading and snack-crafting. During classes this summer, attendees will make banana bee bites, Encanto cocadas and pineapple chocolate dinosaurs. Build a Board will be offered on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. featuring charcuterie board ideas. The boards will include a Philadelphia Zoo board, the Ultimate Road Trip board for planning a cross-
country road trip and a golf “par-tee” board for snacking before hitting the green. Family Meals at 5, where attendees will learn to create affordable meals in under 30 minutes, will be offered every Tuesday at 5 p.m. Among the meal ideas the dietitians will prepare this summer are charcoal grill mountain pies, easy fish tacos with corn slaw and pasta. Better For You Baking will be offered every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Some of the recipes will include mason jar cakes and cobblers, ovenbased “fried” Oreos and a galaxy cake. Foodie Family classes will be held on Saturdays at 10 a.m. The classes, which are recommended for home cooks of all ages, will include learning how to make roasted ranch chickpeas; red, white and blue frozen smoothies;
and lemon lava cakes. In addition to the summer camp series of classes, the dietitians will offer Mocktails in a Minute in June, a Summer Produce Series, Salads in a Snap, Skills on the Grill in July and a back-toschool program with a focus on food allergies in Feature Friday classes. All classes are free to attend, but advance registra-

The piano students of Linda Moccia Rasmuson, a teacher of private and adult group piano lessons, participated in the National Federation of Music Clubs’ Piano Festival on March 14. The students - who hail from Hempfield, Manheim Township, and Millersville - were judged on their proficiency in multiple areas of piano performance. Rasmuson’s pupils who participated are Jessica Decker, Everett Roy, Ruth Janisewski, Lily Miller, Niobe Vaca, Camden Beakes, Theo Goss, Evelyn Maryott, Jude Valle, Noah Valle, Dahlia Franklin, Willa Kroll, Jalia Speece, Katie Firoglanis, Kate Schlegel, Brooke MacCombie and Charlotte MacCombie. All of them received outstanding marks from the judges.
In addition, Everett, Jude, and Noah moved forward to compete in the Pennsylvania Federation of Music Clubs’ Eastern Region Piano Competition, which was held in Stroudsburg on April 9. Everett and Jude advanced to the state competition in Williamsport on April 30.
