Motorsports Show Marks 25 Years

“This is just a great community- and familyoriented event, and we encourage everyone to come and check it out,” said Dean Hershey, describing the LCBC Motorsports Show. “There are things for everybody to experience and fun for everyone.”
The show will be held at LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, on Saturday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free for both guests and vehicle entrants.
The LCBC Motorsports Show will feature antique cars, classics, muscle cars, tuners, motorcycles, street rods, lifted trucks and scale model cars from across the region. This year’s featured
theme celebrates pickup trucks, with a dedicated showcase area highlighting everything from restored antiques to custom offroad builds.
“We are one of the largest free car shows on the East Coast,” said Hershey, show organizer. “We average around 12,000 people here, and around 1,500 to 1,800 vehicles.”

Flag Day is an important moment of remembrance in the United States, especially for those who fought for it.
The Ephrata-Reading Elks Lodge No. 115 and Lancaster Elks No. 134 will host its annual Flag Day ceremony on Sunday, June 14, at 1 p.m. The event will
be held at Faithful Living Home, 2015 N. Reading Road, Denver. This year’s event holds extra value for a multitude of reasons. Along with it being America’s 250th anniversary this summer, Faithful Living has nearly two dozen veterans living at the facility, including 101-year-old World War II veteran John Fry, originally from Brecknock Township and Reamstown.

They call themselves “Misfits.” But that is not a complete representation of who they are and what they are all about.
They could also call themselves “Supporters,” “Heroes” or “Sympathizers.”
“We are a group of people who have been impacted by cancer in some way, either as caregivers, survivors, or we have friends who have gone through the fight,” said Sharon Groff, the Misfits on a Mission team captain. “When we started, most teams were affiliated with a school group, church group, a business or family members. We were a group of people who wanted to do something to give back in honor or in memory of loved ones. Thus, we were a bunch of misfits who had no affiliation, but were on a mission in the fight against cancer.”
Misfits on a Mission is an independent, six-member Relay for Life team that will be out in full force at Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS), 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Friday, June 12, from 3 to 11 p.m., when the American Cancer Society stages its popular local fight against cancer. The volunteer-led, fundraising and awareness-raising Relay for Life brings people together from all over Lancaster County who have been directly or indirectly affected by cancer.
Lancaster County’s annual Relay for Life will feature local teams and individuals running or walking around CVHS’s track in support of loved ones who have battled cancer and will include music, kids’ activities, food trucks, baked goods, crafters and auctions.

The ceremony will detail the history of the American flag, all the way from the “Don’t Tread on Me” flag used during the American Revolution to today’s 50-star star-spangled banner.

Local Elks lodges throughout the country and in U.S. territories will celebrate Flag Day on June 14. The Elks are the only fraternal organization to require observance of Flag Day.
The Elks began requiring this in 1911, five years before President Woodrow Wilson established the day by proclamation in 1916, and nearly four decades before President Harry Truman (an Elks member) signed a bill that made the day a national observance.

Grave Concern Posts Meeting
Grave Concern will hold a quarterly public meeting with a program on Wednesday, June 17, at 7 p.m. at Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster.
The program will be “A Last Act of Caring.” Author and researcher Susan Reinhold will discuss her book about the cemetery located at Brethren Village. The
presentation will include information on the history of Brethren Village, changes to the campus, and the cemetery.
The meeting is free and open to the public. Grave Concern is an organization dedicated to the history, preservation, and restoration of historical burial places.
The ceremony will detail the history of American flags.
This is the 25th anniversary of the motorsports show, which began through the men’s ministry at LCBC.
“Our first show was just a couple of grills set up and probably 10 to 20 vehicles,” Hershey recalled. “It was just a fun idea we had, and it’s grown from that.”
He noted that people come from as far away as Florida to participate in the show, adding, “We’ve had people come from 10 different states.”
The show is about more than vehicles, he said. It’s about creating a place where people can come together, enjoy the day with family and friends and experience community in a real and welcoming way.

on-site, including Dog House Grill, Stacey’s Orangeade, Sittin’ Pickin’ Chickin’, Bricker’s French Fries, Scoops Ice Cream & Grille, Noel’s Café, Funcky Candy X-Press, Kreider Farms and the LCBC café. Families can also enjoy free activities throughout the day, such as face painting, inflatables, mobile mini golf and RC Monster Trucks.
One of the day’s highlights will be a special appearance by the Life Lion helicopter team, Hershey said, noting that people will have the opportunity to watch the helicopter land on-site, meet the crew and experience a live takeoff later in the event.
Trophies will be awarded in a variety of categories
for motorcycles, model cars and other vehicles.
“Our trophies are completely unique to all car shows,” Hershey said. “They are created by one of the guys on our show team in the design of an old gas pump with the show’s specific theme vehicle on it. People that are into car shows, they love our trophies.”
All entrants will also be eligible to win a grand prize NAPA one-of-akind toolbox, which will be awarded by random drawing.

For Power Camp Athletes, God Is the Ultimate Teammate

Power Camps keep kids active over the summer. Power Camps allow kids to meet new people and make new friends. Power Camps help kids discover sports, improve athletic skills and foster a love for their games.
Power Camps also establish and encourage relationships with God.
“It’s about mind, body and soul,” said Diana Roth, an area representative of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and a co-director of the New Holland Power Camp. “There are so many life lessons in sports. Athletics can teach you so many lessons. It’s so good to get outside, move and have fun. Hopefully, we’re developing a love for being physical.”
This year’s edition of FCA’s annual Power Camps will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday, June 15, to Thursday, June 18, on the athletic fields and inside of Petra Christian Fellowship, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. A later installment of the Power Camps will be presented from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday, July 13, to Thursday, July 16, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim.
There are costs involved with attending the camps, and lunch will be provided as
part of the experience.

“We want campers to come away knowing more about Jesus. That’s the main purpose,” said Roth. “We want to encourage them to grow in their relationship with Him, learn the sport and grow in their sport. Kind of like, ‚ÄòHey, I tried a new sport, I want to continue in the sport or try a different sport.’ We want them to be more confident.”

“Our coaches do an amazing job,” said Roth. “We don’t just pick any coach. We want coaches who understand the sport. They’re working with high school students and elementary kids. They’re not looking for perfection. They’re looking to build their confidence and foster their love for the sport.”
“I love to see the high school kids (huddle leaders) I worked with kind of do for
others what I did for them,” she added. “Just helping (campers) grow in their relationships with God. What I hear the high school kids say is that they love to tell the campers about Jesus.”
FCA’s Power Camps were started in New Holland in 2018, with 50 campers.
Part of an international, nonprofit, interdenominational ministry, FCA was established in Lancaster County in 2016 and currently maintains an office
at Spooky Nook Sports, 2913 Spooky Nook Road, Manheim. The local Power Camps are modeled after FCA’s Middle-Atlantic Competition Camps for students between the ages of 13 and 18, which this year are being contested from Monday, June 29, to Friday, July 3, at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.
“Power Camps have been a wonderful way to introduce Fellowship of Christian Athletes to Lancaster,” Roth said.
Annual Percussion Seminar Announced
Lancaster Bible College will host its annual weeklong intensive Total Percussion Seminar from Tuesday to Saturday, June 16 to 20.
The program will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Good Shepherd Chapel on the college’s Lancaster campus at 901 Eden Road. The event will end with a showcase performance open to the public at 2 p.m. on June 20.
The Total Percussion Seminar is geared for middle school, high school, and college percussionists, although adult percussionists are also welcome to register and participate.
Throughout the week, students will participate in clinics, master classes, and percussion ensembles as they experience hands-on learning on drumline techniques, drum set, mallet studies, concert techniques, world and hand drumming, music technology, and district audition preparation.
The guest artists and clinicians will include Brent Behrenshausen, Daniel Mark, Adam Stec, Ralph Sorrentino, Rob Robinson, David Nelson,
and Gabriel Staznik.
Behrenshausen is the director of the Total Percussion Seminar and an adjunct professor at LBC.
Mark is a Total Percussion Seminar mallet percussion specialist and the percussion director of the Kutztown University marching band.
Stec is the owner of Drums Etc./The Drummer’s Pro Shop and has been a professional in the music industry for over a decade.
Sorrentino teaches applied percussion and directs the percussion ensemble at West Chester University. He is the principal percussionist with Opera Philadelphia and a section percussionist with the Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra. He is also a founding member of Electrum Duo.
Robinson is an artist with Ludwig Marching Percussion and an adjudicator for USBands. Inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall
of Fame, he lives in South Florida and works as a private teacher, clinician, and composer.
Nelson is a freelance percussionist and timpanist based in the Philadelphia area and the principal timpanist of the Philly Pops and the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra. He performs regularly with the Philadelphia Orchestra, serves on the faculty at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, and is a graduate of Temple University.
Staznik is a freelance percussionist, educator, and arranger residing in the Washington, D.C., area. He is the drummer in Max Impact and serves as the section chief of unit operations for the United States Air Force Band.

Daughter of Auschwitz Survivor to Speak
The World War II Oral History Group will meet on Tuesday, June 16, at 7 p.m. in the ballroom at the Heritage Hotel, 500 Centerville Road, Lancaster. The program is part of the group’s “I Speak for Another” series.
The speaker will be Edyta Jacoby, daughter of World War II survivor Heinrich Jakubowicz. Heinrich was born on May 5, 1924, in Będzin, Poland, and he was 15 at the outbreak of the war. He was sent to a ghetto and then was deported and enslaved in a total of five camps, the last of which was Auschwitz. He was still at the camp when it was liberated on Jan. 27, 1945. Although Heinrich survived, his father and siblings did not. Immediately following liberation, Heinrich went to an army base in Erlangen, Germany, and from there, he came to America, where he was known as
Henry Jacoby. Edyta will share his story, along with photos of his life immediately after liberation and in the U.S.

Church Plans Food Drive
Hempfield Church of the Brethren, 1186 Stevens St., Manheim, will sponsor a community-wide food drive in support of the Hempfield Area Food Pantry and the Manheim Central Food Pantry. The food drive will occur over two Tuesdays, June 16 and 23. Donations will be accepted from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days. The two pantries support over 300 families and 1,000 people in the local communities with needed groceries.

The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) recently recognized outstanding efforts in natural resource conservation at its 73rd awards banquet at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster.

The 2026 Outstanding Cooperator of the Year Award was presented to the Twin Lane Farm, operated by Bob and Doreen Shearer and Michael and Julie Shearer, for their commitment to conservation on their farm. The Shearers have worked closely with the Conservation District and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service for more than 25 years. The family has implemented conservation best management practices, including grassed waterways, a mortality composter, a roofed heavy-use area, no-till farming, and cover crops. The family has helped to educate others on conservation by hosting field days and site visits.
The LCCD watershed program awarded the Watershed Excellence Award to John D. Hoover, whose farm was part of a stream restoration project. Hoover worked alongside LCCD staff members and an excavating team, restoring 2,200 feet of streambank and instream habitat, and planted hundreds of trees to establish a riparian buffer. He engaged his community in the project,

The erosion and sedimentation program recognized the Lancaster Civil Engineering Company with the Building Industry Resource Conservation Award. Lancaster Civil Engineering Company received the award because it consistently prepares stormwater discharge
permit applications and works collaboratively with LCCD.
The Ann Brown Scholarship recipients for the current school year were announced. This college scholarship is awarded to graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue secondary studies in the fields of agriculture or conservation of natural resources. Lauren Smith and Ellie Eshleman received the 2025-26 scholarships.
Conestoga Township was honored with the Low Volume Road Project Award. Conestoga Township worked with LCCD’s low-volume road program to build a technically sound project on Brenner Hollow Road that reduced stormwater impacts to a local stream. To do so, the township engaged landowners, worked within a limited area, solved a resource concern, and stayed within its budget. LCCD recognized the project for technical ingenuity, community engagement, and responsible use of public funding.
Rick Purnell has volunteered at the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School as a fly-tier instructor for more than 15 years. Donating supplies and
materials for all students to participate, he’s generously offered students hands-on experience, developing an appreciation for this outdoor experience of flyfishing.
Brandon Bixler, the agricultural and environmental science teacher at McCaskey High School in the School District of Lancaster, accepted the Conservation Educator Award. The accolade honored Bixler’s commitment to building a new program at McCaskey High School, bridging agriculture and FFA to environmental science within an urban school district. McCaskey FFA completed the charter process in 2025.
