Create Columbia Plans Art In The Gardens Art in the Gardens will be held in the Columbia area on Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event has been coordinated by Create Columbia, a local nonprofit organization that is the artistic branch of Columbia’s Merchant Association. The annual tour blends the artistry of several local gardeners with the talents of a variety of fine artists

Lancaster County-based We’re All God’s Children (WAGC) offers shortterm mission trips for people who want to serve others both at home and abroad. Two years ago, board member Mark Herman of Landisville led a team of six people to volunteer at Esther’s Heart Ministry (EHM), which Beth Algeria founded in her husband Oscar’s native El Salvador. Since then, Mark and his wife, Nancy, have been invested in supporting EHM. Nancy has coordinated a chicken barbecue sale to raise funds to help EHM purchase a youth center. The
event will be held on Saturday, June 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hempfield United Methodist Church, 3050 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. Half-chickens will be prepared by Nolt’s Barbecue, which Mark said drew rave reviews from customers at last year’s barbecue event. Meals will include chicken, chips, applesauce, and water and may be ordered at www.hempfieldumc.org/bbq. Baked goods will be sold a la carte. Presold orders must be picked up by 1 p.m. Extras will be available afterward for cash purchase while supplies last. Hempfield High School graduate Tyler Barley is currently living in San Salvador and working with EHM. He had been on several mission trips and felt called to long-term service with EHM. Nancy shared that Tyler will be coming back to Lancaster on a humanitarian flight, but he hopes to return to EHM after raising support. “We’re always looking for volunteers to go on mission trips,” Mark commented, adding that until it is safe to travel, teams are fundraising to meet the needs of the organizations they work with. He is focused on EHM. “We’re trying to raise money to help these children in San Salvador who already had it hard, but with the lockdown and the tropical storm, things are going to be even harder,” Mark said. their vehicles, and volunteers wearing masks and gloves will bring meals to the vehicles. Individuals interacting with the volunteers are asked to wear masks. The proceeds from the barbecue sale will help EHM purchase a building to use as a safe gathering place for the children of San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. Prior to El Salvador’s strict lockdown due to COVID-19, the Algerias hosted events for children in their homes and occasionally at their church. When school is not in session, the Algerias rent a community center, but even it is not large enough for all the children served by EHM to gather at one time. However, a large house near the Algerias’ home is sitting empty and would meet the needs of the ministry. The Algerias are negotiating its purchase, but EHM needs money for a down payment. A safe space for children is important, as there is a heavy gang presence in San Salvador, Mark said. Trafficking is also a risk. “These kids are growing up in a very tough environment,” he added. “Beth and Oscar are trying to show them that there’s a bigger world out there, that people love them, that there are options.” “God spared Queen Esther when she was a youth to save her people,” Beth said, explaining the name of EHM. “We believe our kids will grow up to change their nation.” EHM aims to help families by providing supplemental food, clothing, medical and dental care, and educational supplies made possible by sponsors. Due to the convergence of the shutdown and Tropical Storm Amanda, the rough living conditions have been made even worse. Mark noted that the community center EHM had rented is now serving as temporary housing. The country is currently under martial law to ensure everyone stays home. “They took (COVID-19) very seriously,” Mark said. “They’re only allowed out one day a week to buy food.” People in El Salvador are more worried that they will starve to death than they are about the coronavirus. “We are working hard to make sure that none of our kids or their family members go hungry during this time of crisis,” Beth said.

while attending the event, and procedures will be in place to limit the number of people at each venue at any given time. If guidelines prevent the tour being offered on June 13, an alternate date of Saturday, June 27, has been set. Rain will not cause the tour to be moved to the later date. Art in the Gardens will be just as its name implies: Each of the participating residential landscapes will host at least one artist working en plein air. Paintings will be produced in acrylics, oils, collages, and more. Musical artistry will also be offered at some of the locations. The tour will feature seven gardens that showcase different styles and gardening features. The artists tentatively assigned to each location are included in the listings. The gardens of Justin and Jennifer Albright include fruit trees, a raised bed, and a water feature to complement the hardscaping. Jay Dombach and Elizabeth Patton will be the guest artists. Gary and Denise Brubaker have incorporated family handprints, patriotic plantings, and annual planters in their outdoor layout. Peggi Donnan is the assigned artist. A pergola anchors the plantings in Jim and Beth Kramer’s predominantly shade garden. Freiman Stoltzfus will be the featured artist. Kelly and Rebecca Murphy’s Victorianstyle gardens are a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat and include a
water feature, an herb garden, a pergola constructed from upcycled pieces, and more. Emily Frey will be the guest artist. Artist Janette Toth-Musser will be right at home in the garden she created with Jerry King Musser. Inspired by the English cottage style, the couple’s garden includes whimsical topiaries as well as native Pennsylvania flowers, herbs, and a variety of perennials. A wide variety of ornamental trees and perennials add color to Dave and Vivian Rupp’s garden, which includes a goldfish pond, a grape arbor, and Dave’s shanty. The shanty is more than 150 years old and was removed from Mount Bethel Cemetery. Susan Darling will be the guest artist. Tom and Kathy Ziegler have created a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat with evergreens, deciduous trees, perennials, grasses, and bushes. The garden also includes a gazebo, birdhouses, garden art, and more. The featured artist will be Leslie Harbold. The seven residential gardens will be featured for the duration of the tour. The tour organizers noted that the gardens of Wright’s Ferry Mansion, which are typically a popular stop on Columbia garden tours, will not be part of this year’s event. The mansion has been closed as part of the shutdown, but the site directors hope to return to the tour next year.
