Eye Drop 2022 To Raise Funds For VisionCorps BY FRANCINE FULTON
“It’s a way for me to give back to VisionCorps and to help other people facing the same challenges that I am,” said Mike Hora, when explaining his motivation to participate in Eye Drop 2022, which is presented by VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization that provides services to the blind and visually impaired. Waystock To Feature Music, Activities, And More ayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, will host the 10th annual Waystock Community Music & Family Fun Fest on Saturday, June 11, from noon to 5 p.m., hosted by Grace Notes, Wayside’s praise band. The music and family fun festival will include performances by five local praise bands and family activities on the church’s lawn. Masks are not required. The outdoor pavilion will be available for picnic-style seating, but lawn chairs and blankets for seating are encouraged. The church grounds also include a playground. Free family activities will be offered. There will be a Kidz’ Korner, including a 53-foot inflatable obstacle course; balloon creations; and West Hempfield emergency responders. The church will offer free food and drinks while

Those who bring five or more items will have a chance to win a gas card. In the case of inclement weather, the event will take place indoors. The event is sponsored by Richards Energy, Harmon & Davies Attorneys at Law, High Transit, and Hershey Ice Cream. For the summer, Wayside will host one Sunday service at 10 a.m. This service will feature a blend of contemporary and traditional music. Starting in September, Wayside will return to its normal schedule, offering two Sunday morning worship choices - a traditional service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by fellowship and a contemporary service with Grace Notes from 11 a.m. to noon. In 2020, the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Lancaster Relay For Life event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Last year, Relay For Life of Lancaster County held an abbreviated event. “Everyone was so excited to be in each other’s presence and to be able to be on the track,” recalled Stephanie Delp, ACS senior development manager. “That momentum has carried us forward.” See Relay For Life pg 5

Hora is legally blind and has glaucoma, an eye disease that affects his depth perception and ability to see fine detail. He began working at VisionCorps in 2013, and heard about the fundraiser from Megan Tomsheck, VisionCorps vice president.

The American Heart Association (AHA) welcomed more than 130 supporters to the Lancaster Heart Ball on April 30 at the Lancaster Country Club. It was the first time the event was held in person since February 2020. The campaign raised nearly $120,000 for the AHA. Activities will begin at noon on Friday, June 10, and conclude at noon on Saturday, June 11. Andy’s father, Dr. John Esbenshade Jr., was a cardiologist in Lancaster for many years and diagnosed Andy with a heart murmur when Andy was 17 years old. At age 40, Andy was diagnosed with a bicuspid aortic valve after a family doctor detected an irregularity during a routine physical. The valve was still in good condition at the time, but after 24 years of regular check-ups and monitoring, doctors determined it was time for a valve replacement. Andy underwent his valve replacement surgery in August 2021 and was back to work within weeks.

Traditional Relay activities will also be observed, including the survivor’s ceremony at 4 p.m. on June 10 and the luminaria ceremony at dusk that same evening. At 7 p.m. on June 10, the annual cake auction will be held. Delp noted that the auction, which features James Fishel as auctioneer, is not limited to cakes. “Dotty Moser’s famous fudge has brought over $300 at auction,”she said. On the morning of June 11, all survivors and caregivers are invited to a free breakfast provided by the Breakfast Crew beginning at 8 a.m. KPETS will be on-site to promote the ACS Bark For Life event later this year. The 2022 honorary survivor will be Justin Shiffer, and the honorary caregiver will be the infusion team at Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute.
