Hempfield

HHempfield student earns art scholarship

empfield High School teachers laud Lydia Card’s ability to formulate ideas and bring those ideas to life.

The local art community honored Lydia for excelling in both aspects with equal aplomb.

Lydia, a senior at Hempfield High School, was recognized for compiling the premier portfolio in the Lancaster Young Artist exhibition and was rewarded with a $20,000 scholarship from Red Raven Art Company and the C.X. Carlson Foundation.

“I was very surprised,” Lydia said. “I thought I would just apply and see what happens, and I ended up winning. That was nice.”

Along with the works in her portfolio, Lydia was required to provide a personal statement and an artist statement, describing the pieces and what they mean to her. “What I was focusing on was the aspect of strangers and how everybody else is going through different things,” she said. “Everyone is going through equally complex things in their lives. I focused on the sweeter memories between people.”

Hempfield Foundation board member Carol Graham stated that she believes all local residents should be invested in the educational opportunities presented to Hempfield School District students.

Members of the community will have the chance to support the foundation’s goals while enjoying a day on the links.

The annual Hempfield Foundation Golf Tournament will be held Friday, June 6, at Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville.

The cost will include green fees; use of a cart; in-tournament skills challenges; and an awards reception, which will be held at 5:30 p.m.

In addition to the scholarship, Lydia will show one of her pieces on Red Raven’s emerging artist’s wall throughout June. She is working on a large oil painting of an elderly couple walking through sunflowers, which she is planning to display at Red Raven.

The sunflower painting is an example of how Lydia goes about her craft. She took a photo,

sketched out a drawing, and then projected the sketch onto a larger canvas. Lydia uses an acrylic base to bring out the colors in her oil paints.

“I like seeing my ideas go down on paper or a canvas in a way that’s different than just taking a picture,” she said. “There are different elements that you can include that are different than using your phone or a camera, like the brushstrokes and the different colors you can mix. They

Preregistration is required and must be completed by Friday, May 30. Go to www .hempfieldfoundation.org to register or for additional information.

Participants should check in at noon and will be able to visit the driving range. A box lunch will be provided. There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. with a scramble format. Blue Collar

are all just very fascinating to me.”

Lydia was inspired to become an artist by her grandmother Maureen Card. “My grandma was very into art,” said Lydia. “Whenever we would go visit her house, we would do some sort of craft. I just continued to do it from there. I just found out that I was kind of good at it, so I kept going.”

She plans to keep going after graduating from Hempfield, using her scholarship to attend Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, beginning this fall. Lydia is planning to study art education with a major in general fine arts and then become a teacher while painting commissions on the side.

She had an internship at Farmdale Elementary School with her former art teacher Dan Zdilla. “I just really loved helping the kids get to where they wanted to go and bring their ideas from what they’re imagining in their head to the paper,” said Lydia. “And then seeing them being very proud of it and showing me their progress was very nice. I like that aspect of it.”

said Lydia. “Right now, I’m taking clay, metal, and glass (classes), which are mediums I wouldn’t be able to take as easily on my own or at a different facility. I’ve had a lot of great teachers that (motivate) me to be better than I was.”

Kabbeko noted Lydia is unique in the age of social media. “The focus students have for a slow labor like painting has dwindled,” Kabbeko said. “That’s something Lydia does very well. She is able to focus. She dedicates large chunks of time to her craft, and I think that sets her apart.”

Lydia appreciates the fact she has a legion of supporters, most notably her parents, Patricia and Timothy Card, who proudly display some of their daughter’s paintings in their home. “They have always provided really good support, and I have been a bragging right of theirs for a while,” Lydia said with

She is also grateful for the art program at Hempfield and current teachers Erica Kabbeko and Amy Edwards. “I’ve had access to a lot of mediums and a lot of great teachers,”

Kabbeko also praises Lydia’s passion and curiosity. “She is looking at these moments in time that she’s exploring and thinks about what is happening,” she explained. “A lot of people gloss over those things and don’t notice, but Lydia sees those things and wants to bring them to life. The way she paints, people are noticing these moments. … It’s just really cool to watch. I think the coolest thing is when you see a student putting in that much work and getting success out of it. And she’s (a) sweet (person).”

Edwards said, “Lydia’s humility is one of the things that pops out to me. I think she really appreciates the gift she has and wants to really succeed.”

Lydia isn’t resting on her laurels. “Her ideas are great,” said Edwards. “She always had as idea for whatever she is working on. Now she works on so many mediums in each of our rooms, and she excels at everything. Every day she comes in energized and ready to go. She’s a special kid.”

Restaurant, Bar & Catering will provide the food.

There will be a chance to win prizes, and several holes will feature skills competitions. A Hempfield High School golfer will participate in a challenge on No. 12. Golfers can make a donation, and the student will hit an extra tee shot that their group can use on the hole.

Penn State Health is the Hempfield Foundation’s Premier Community Partner and golf tournament title sponsor. All proceeds will benefit the Hempfield Foundation.

“It is important for everybody who lives in the district to understand that education affects everyone, whether you have children or not,” said Graham, who is a retired Hempfield teacher. “To support the education of the students at Hempfield will benefit people in the long run.”

During the current school year, the Hempfield Foundation has funded 30 grants totaling $62,681. The money has paid for numerous teacher initiatives, including improving foundational reading and literacy skills for the youngest

Hempfield students and providing audiovisual equipment for classrooms, in addition to producing live feeds to stream concerts.

Hempfield Foundation grants have supplied support for grieving students and families, provided equipment to assist eighth-graders in Applied Technology classes, and funded translator earbuds and materials for ESL learners.

“The grants provide materials, learning opportunities, and experiences that make a Hempfield education unique, while the scholarships support our Hempfield graduates as they transition to higher education, technical training, and entrepreneurships,” said Kate Mullen, who is the foun-

dation’s board secretary and golf tournament chair. Graham touted the “broadness of our grant-giving,” mentioning STEM, literature, music, and nature. “At Hempfield, we produce scientists,” she said. “We produce artists. We produce writers. To support the teachers’ initiatives and to give scholarships to students who otherwise would have trouble affording college is something that everyone should be proud of helping.”

Graham said she saw a poster during Teacher Appreciation Week that she found especially salient. The poster read, “Teachers create every other job.”

The golf tournament is one of the Hempfield Foundation’s major fundraisers, but help is welcomed year-round. “If people don’t want to golf, there are many other ways to support the foundation by donating or volunteering,” said Graham. Volunteers are needed to work during the golf tournament and to help at events where the foundation has a presence, such as preview nights for school musicals and dance performances. Golfers prepare to tee off at last year’s Hempfield Foundation tournament.

Sinking her way into a Hoop Shoot victory

At just 9 years old, Carrigan Price has secured her spot in basketball history. She is the first participant from the Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 Hoop Shoot to advance to the national competition, where she not only won first place in her age division, but she also took home an award as the highest-scoring girl in the entire competition. Her win came after a nail-biting shootout victory on April 26 in Chicago, earning her national recognition and her name on the wall at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Massachusetts.

Carrigan, who is the daughter of Ryan and Michele Price, is a fourth-grader at Landisville Intermediate Center. Her journey to the national competition began in November when she participated in the local event in Columbia.

Carrigan’s winning path was paved with consistent excellence. At each of the previous stages -

local, district, state and regional - she sank 23 out of 25 free throws each time. She ultimately qualified to represent her region at the national competition hosted by the Elks organization, which includes six divisions split by gender and age: 8 to 9, 10 to 11 and 12 to 13.

In Chicago, Carrigan faced stiff competition and intense pressure. After making 24 out of 25 free throws in regulation, she found herself tied with another contestant. What followed was a dramatic series of five shootouts of five shots each. In the end, Carrigan emerged victorious, scoring 45 out of 50 to clinch the national title by a single shot.

“I felt happy because it was my first year, and I didn’t think I could make it all the way and win nationals,” Carrigan said.

She wasn’t just the top in her division. Her overall score made her the highest-scoring girl across all age groups at the event. That achievement earned her the Getty

Powell Award, which she will receive in June at the Elks national convention in Kansas City.

Carrigan’s journey began almost by chance. Her parents noticed an article about the local Hoop Shoot in the Merchandiser and encouraged her to give it a try. It turned out to be a full-circle moment. Both Michele and her brother, Mike Alpaugh, had competed in the Elks Hoop Shoot in their youth, though they hadn’t initially realized it was the same program.

Although Carrigan played basketball, she wasn’t used to focusing specifically on free throws. But she rose to the challenge, driven

by her competitive spirit and strong family support.

From the start, her dad helped her design a rigorous practice regimen.

“Every single time we had free time, me and my dad would go to schools, parks and Spooky Nook, and we’d do simulations,” she recalled. They mimicked shootout conditions, even practicing scenarios where Carrigan would shoot first or second, with rounds of 10 and 15 shots.

“I wanted her to be prepared for every situation,” Ryan shared, and that turned out to be a great strategy. “At the national event, anything

that could happen, happened.”

As nationals approached, Carrigan’s shooting percentages climbed.

“She was always stuck in the 23 range, but as we got closer, she was getting 24s and 25s,” Ryan said. “When she punched the first 10 out of 10 in Chicago, I was feeling good.”

Carrigan herself was remarkably composed under pressure.

Spectators and commentators noted her poise, as she smiled through the competition. Her calmness belied her nerves.

“When I got there, I was nervous,” she admitted. “I looked

through a book of stats and was worried about the competition’s numbers.”

Beyond her impressive performance, Carrigan also displayed grace and sportsmanship. Val Kissinger, chair of the Hoop Shoot for Columbia Elks 1074, accompanied the Prices to Chicago and was struck by Carrigan’s maturity.

“One thing that I really admired about Carrigan is that the little girl who got second place was sitting right beside her after Carrigan won,” she said, “and Carrigan was consoling her.”

For her efforts, Carrigan received

a medal, a hat and a trophy at the awards ceremony. She traveled to nationals with her parents and her older sister, Cassidy, where she enjoyed themed events like trivia night, a “Space Jam” movie night and, of course, the competition. She especially liked trading custom Hoop Shoot cards with other participants and meeting kids from across the country, including as far away as Alaska.

Carrigan’s shooting style includes a few personal touches. She wears her lucky shirt and basketball shoes and always remembers her dad’s “golden rule”: Don’t miss two in a row. When that happened at the national competition, she quickly regrouped.

“When I think I’m going to

miss, I take a breath before I shoot,” she said, noting that in the final round, she sealed her victory with determination and grit. “I said in my head, ‘I’m ending this,’ and I punched a 5 out of 5.”

Youths can mark their calendars for the next local Hoop Shoot on Sunday, Nov. 9. For more information, visit elks.org/hoopshoot.

Fans can watch Carrigan’s performance on YouTube at https:// bit.ly/3YH1403 (Carrigan’s shots begin at about the 36-minute mark) and discover why Carrigan’s cousin gave her a new moniker.

“My sister told me something my cousin had said while he was watching it online,” Carrigan shared. “He said, ‘You’re the No. 1 8-to-9 girls’ Michael Jordan.’”
