A FUN Time For Families BY CATHY MOLITORIS
On Saturday, May 21, the parking lot outside Families United Network (FUN) in Mount Joy will be full of love and laughter. The annual FUN Fest will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the organization, 412 S. Angle St., and will feature a variety of activities for people of all ages. “May is National Foster Care
Month, and we are holding (the event) in honor of that,” explained Kristin Meeks, FUN program supervisor. “It’s an opportunity to possibly recruit families and bring awareness of what we do as an agency.” Headquartered in Muncy, Families United Network was founded in 1996 as a private foster care provider. In a clash of Section One rivals on Friday, April 29, Hempfield scored 10 runs in the fifth inning to defeat Manheim Township 14-4 in Landisville. The Knights improved to 43 in Section One (7-6 overall) as senior Bailey Ray went 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Courtney Guthrie earned the win, striking out three batters. At the plate, Guthrie slugged one of five Hempfield doubles, going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI’s. Avery Landis also doubled and drove in two runs. Olivia Cover, batting ninth, went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI’s while leadoff batter Alex Gregory went 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI. Hempfields’ late rally in Tuesday’s game at Cedar Crest fell short as the Falcons won 6-2. The Knights managed six hits, three of which were doubles. Ray doubled to drive in one run. Oliver and freshman Kali Peifer also doubled with Peifer driving in Hempfield’s other run. Carley Ernst went 1-for4 with a stolen base. TENNIS In certain high school sports, as a team reloads its roster, it is fortunate enough to bring on a freshman with poise and talent. That has been the case with Cooper Lehman’s contributions to the Hempfield boys’ tennis team. “He came in and did very well for us,” said head coach Mindi Bell. “In our non-league matches he also faced tough opponents and handled the pressure.” Lehman performed under pressure over the weekend as the league’s top tennis players converged on Conestoga Valley for the L-L League Championships. Lehman battled through the brackets and earned the singles championship as well as pairing up with Eric Jorrdan
to reach the finale of the Flight One doubles. “They have done a great job together,” Bell said of Jordan and Lehman. “They also worked together in the off-season.” Lehman opened his championship quest with 6-0, 6-1 win over P.J. Fahey of Penn Manor on Thursday, April 28. He posted the same winning scores against Garrett Muraika of Cedar Crest. Another Crest opponent - Rocco Shkreli - faced him in the semifinals. Another straight sets win (6-2, 6-0) by Lehman. He faced Manheim Township foe Michael Georgelis in the finale, coming away with a tough 7-5, 7-5 victory. Interestingly, in doubles, Jordan and Lehman faced Muraika and Shkreli. Their Crest counterparts were the top-seeded pair. They topped Jordan and Lehman 6-3, 6-3 to take the doubles championship. In their path to the finals, Jordan and Lehman opened with a 6-4, 6-1 win and went on to defeat Ephrata’s Lance Wilson and Colin Zucchi 6-2, 6-0. In the semis, Georgelis paired up with Nick Keener. The Township twosome won the second set 6-4 to force a tiebreaker, which Jordan and Lehman won 10-7. In the second round of the Flight Two singles, Jordan lost a close 7-6, 7-6 match to Zucchi. Andre Hurst entered the Flight Three singles as the top seed and made it to the final where he faced sixth-seeded Connor Zook of Cocalico. Zook took the first set 7-5 only to have Hurst bounce back for a 6-0 win. In the third set, Zook managed to outlast the Hempfield sophomore 11-9. “He lost a tough three-setter in the final,” said Bell. “They were very evenly matched.” Hurst burst out of the gate with

GIRLS’ LACROSSE In a 21-7 victory at Kennard-Dale on Monday, May 2, Hempfield (151) out-shot K-D 26-9 and Kelsea Dague scored seven goals. Brynne Axe scored four and assisted on three. Isabelle Masengarb and Whitney Hershey each notched hat tricks while Natalie Bole, Makenzie Warfel, Mia Brennan, and Maureen Krauser each netted one goal. Led by Axe’s five goals and Masengarb’s four scores, the Knights topped Cumberland Valley 13-11 on Saturday morning. Dague finished with two goals with Bole and Hershey each scoring once. Two days earlier, the Knights dominated Cocalico 19-4 at home. Dague led with six goals. Axe added three goals and three assists. Her-
shey and Masengarb also notched hat tricks while Bole tallied two goals. Warfel and Kenna Price each scored once. BASEBALL Logan Harelson not only earned the win in Monday’s 11-1 triumph over Cedar Crest, he also had a hand in driving in some of those 11 runs. The sophomore escaped trouble in the top of the first, allowing a run on two hits. He pitched hitless ball over four innings. In the home half of the first, Hempfield scored seven times, aided by a Josh Toole bases-loaded walk and two Falcon errors. Harelson also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Cameron Berger singled to drive in one more. In the third, Harelson stroked a two-run double. Township had a seven-run inning in Friday’s 9-6 win at home. While the event is free, donations will be accepted for the organization’s mission. “Any proceeds we make from this event will be used for our foster parent event for our families, which is also held in May,” said Holly Tanner, resource parent specialist for FUN.
Tanner noted that the event has been well-received in the past. “Some families come for half an hour. Sports from pg 4 BOYS’ LACROSSE The long-awaited boys’ lacrosse match between the Knights and Blue Streaks took place at Manheim Township on Friday, April 29, with the host Streaks beating Hempfield 18-8. It was a 5-4 match after one quarter. The Streaks went on an 83 run over the next two periods. Max Grube and A.J. McAlpine each scored twice for Hempfield. Ryan Hilton, Zack Antesberger, Toby Marco, and Ryan Heuston each scored once. Hempfield fell to 11-2 overall. VOLLEYBALL The battle between Section One’s top two volleyball teams ended with Warwick defeating Hempfield 3-1 on Tuesday, May 3, at Lititz. The Warriors (8-1) handed Hempfield (9-1) its first league loss of the year,
creating a first-place tie. In April, the Knights had beaten Warwick 3-1 in Landisville. In Tuesday’s match, the Knights opened with a 25-19 victory. The Warriors fought back for 25-23, 2521 and an even closer 26-24 winning margins. Dante Keener paced the Knights with 12 kills while Caden Bonner had 35 assists and three blocks. Mason Orth finished with 19 digs and one ace. Hempfield was coming off another close loss on Saturday. In the Keystone Cup at Dallastown, Lower Dauphin prevailed 19-25, 26-24, 25-21 and 25-21. Kenner collected 15 kills and, like Cole Jackson and Josiah Pletcher, served four aces. Keener and Ethan Earhart each had four blocks. Bonner dished out 34 assists and

TRACK In a Section One meet, McCaskey’s boys’ and girls’ teams triumphed over Hempfield with the Red Tornado girls remaining unbeaten at 5-0 following their 120-29 victory. The Knights got first-place performances from Sydney Rhoads in the high jump and Piper Brugman in the pole vault. McCaskey won the boys’ meet 92-58. Hempfield wins included the 4x400 (Logan Muhlerg, Aidan Hodge, Carson Lieberman, Chris Titter), and the 4x800 team of Titter, Joe Fahrney, Sam Freedman, who also won the 3,200-meter race, and Dale Winand. Hodge won the 800 and 1,600 events and Brody Weachter took the pole vault.

Community will be held rain or shine at the Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville, on Saturday, June 4, with rolling starts beginning at 7 a.m. Riders must register and check in between 7 and 9 a.m. The ride is designed to appeal to bicycle enthusiasts by offering four routes - a 10mile family ride; a 21-mile ride through scenic countryside; a 43-mile ride showcasing farms, schoolhouses, and covered bridges; and a metric century ride of 100 kilometers, equivalent to approximately 62 miles. Metric century riders must depart by 8 a.m. On this course, an optional hill stage called the Cat’s Back challenge will be offered. Ride participants will find water and rest stops located along each of the marked routes. For many years, the event was called the Literacy Ride, but a few years ago, it was
more indicative of what we’re trying to do,” said Holm, who noted that this year, Rotary Club members are each sponsoring a rider from Lifecycles. Lifecycles, based in Wrightsville, is an organization that is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18. Lifecycles offers participants a chance to enjoy friendship, mentoring, and bike riding with a faith focus. Thirty Lifecycles participants will take part in the ride. In addition, the club has partnered with The Common Wheel to accept quality, gently used bikes from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. the day of the ride. He noted that district grants allow a club president to choose a project to fund and that in 2021, that project was the Lancaster-Lebanon

Education Fund to support IU13 students who needed learning materials to use at home. Other local organizations that have benefited include Aaron’s Acres, Byrnes Health Education Center, Love INC of Lancaster County, and Off the Streets Lancaster. At a March meeting of the club, a special grant was awarded to aid victims of the war in Ukraine. “ We are doing a $5,000 grant to an organization in Budapest, Hungary, to help get money to Ukrainian humanitarian
relief,” said Holm. The 2021 event attracted nearly 100 riders. “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive Planned On Saturday, May 14, the National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its 30th annual National Food Drive to Stamp Out Hunger. After two years of virtual donor drives, Lancaster County letter carriers will once again pick up nonperishable food donations. The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is timed to resupply local food pantries when they are usually depleted and entering the summer with low supplies. The annual event has collected over 1.88 billion pounds of food nationally over the last 29 years. Participating households are asked to place nonperishable food items in a bag either in or around their mailbox on the morning of May 14. All donations collected will be donated to local food pantries.
The top requested nonperishable food items are cereal; pasta; pasta sauce; rice; canned fruits and vegetables; canned meals, such as soups, chili, and pasta; 100% juice; peanut butter; macaroni and
cheese; canned fish or poultry; and shelf-stable milk that does not require refrigeration. Healthy, low-sodium, lowsugar items - for example, beans, either canned or dry; oatmeal and other whole
grains; and canola or olive oil are also needed. All items should be unexpired and in plastic or cardboard packaging. No glass jars or bottles should be placed in bags for donation.

Sit, Stay: Selecting An Easier-To-Train Dog Training is one of the most important ways to keep companion animals safe. When prospective pet owners begin looking for a new dog, one of the first thoughts that may come to mind is trainability and whether certain breeds are more easy to train than others. The pet food manufacturers at Honest Kitchen indicated that breed is just one of many factors that can make a difference in how easily a dog will be trained. For example, dogs that are food-motivated and enjoy being around people may be more easily trained than those without such traits. How the animal was bred, raised and socialized can also play a part. The American Kennel Club reported that certain dogs are more willing to comply with owner requests, while others are bred to work independently and may be less likely to immediately respond to commands from their owners. Though there is no guarantee any dog will take to training, the following are some breeds that are generally considered training-friendly. - Border collies: Collies are bright and energetic dogs that like to herd with their agility and intelligence. - Australian shepherd: Another herding dog, Aussies have a natural focus on their owners and are bred to work with those owners in challenging environments. - Doberman pinschers: Dobermans are smart and attentive to their owners. They have traditionally been employed as guard dogs and require careful training and socialization to be tolerant of strangers. - German shepherds: These workhorses serve many different roles because of their

affinity for learning tasks. As with Dobermans, look for a well-socialized German shepherd to avoid anxiety and wariness of people. - Poodles: Poodles are popular because they do not shed much, but also because they are intelligent, obedient and versatile. - Golden retrievers: Golden retrievers are not known as a family dog for nothing. Goldens are very intelligent and amiable, and they often will go to great lengths to please their owners. Labrador retrievers also take to training well and are very affectionate. - Papillon: Smaller dogs are often viewed as stubborn or independent. However, papillons are incredibly smart and trainable and are naturally focused. The pet advisement site K9 of Mine warned that some of the smartest, most trainable
dogs may not necessarily be the easiest to live with. They can get bored easily and destroy things around the
house if they cannot keep their minds occupied. This is a factor to consider when selecting a breed as well.
