ccording to Homeless Shelters Directory, there are an estimated 950 homeless individuals in Lancaster and Chester counties. It costs Good Samaritan Services (GSS) $35 to provide a night of shelter, two meals, supplies, and compassionate care to an individual. That is about one-third the cost of a hotel per night. Previously known as Good Sam Shelter, GSS has been operating since June 1999. By 2002, GSS purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to provide five people at a time with emergency housing. Currently, GSS owns 14 properties, totaling 100 beds and over 30,000 square feet. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 when it opened an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families that are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention,

One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “Anytime anyone in the community is participating - whether that’s through monthly donorship or coming to our events - they’re really making a difference right here in their own community,” said Mandy Johnson, director of community engagement at GSS. “ We’re so grateful because without the support, we literally couldn’t do the work we’re doing.” “We live in a great community, and it’s being made even better with what GSS does every day,” stated Rachel Stebbins, EPC marketing director. “The Golf Outing is a fun way to enjoy the great outdoors, meet some fellow dogooders, and help put a dent in homelessness!” Preregistration is required and can be completed up to 48 hours before the event. Joanne Ranck Dirks, assistant manager of farm and gardens at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, loves to tell the stories of the heirloom seeds she and her manager, Joe Schott, have preserved as part of the organization’s Heirloom Seed Project. “What makes our program unique is that it’s about preservation and commitment to our community in preserving these treasures,” said Dirks, who noted that seed packets bear the names of the donors and as much history as can fit on the label. Plants grown from preserved seeds will be available at the Herb & Garden Faire to be held at the museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, on Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. “For the Herb & Garden Faire, we want vegetables, herbs, perennials, and annuals,” said Dirks. According to the museum, many longtime vendors will return for this year’s fair. The event was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions. One story Dirks likes to share is that of Anna Lee Ault, a 95-year-old resident of Bluffton, Ind., who sent an envelope of tomato seeds to the project in September of 2018. Ault wrote that she had been growing the

tomatoes for 50 years and that they were the best tasting she had ever had, but she could not remember the original name. She said she got them from her neighbor Martha Linn. “We grew them out the next year, and they were good, and then COVID hit, and we shut down,” said Dirks, who sent Ault a few packages of Anna Lee Ault tomato seeds. She was quickly contacted by a Bluffton weekly newspaper doing a story on Ault’s seeds. The story ran in the Feb. 18, 2021, issue, and Dirks was soon besieged with requests for the seeds from Ault’s relatives and friends. “The story went live on Friday morning, and by noon, I was getting orders online,” recalled Dirks, who has sold 160 packages of Ault’s seeds, which breaks all project records. Dirks, who got involved in the project in 2014, said that the museum has been collecting heirloom seeds since 1986. “The commitment is to preserve seeds that have been donated to us by especially local people of Pennsylvania German heritage, but not just Lancaster County,” said Dirks, who noted that heirloom vegetables have a taste advantage. “We have so many different kinds, and they are wonderful,” she said. Plants are grown in three large nursery buildings plus two kitchen gardens on site at the museum. The

The 2022 Ambassadors are Journee Grace Halbleib, Sam LeonDurkee, Ellery McIndoe and Carter Peiffer. Journee sustained a traumatic brain injury as an infant, and her mother, Jennifer Halbleib, said doctors did not think she would ever learn to walk or talk. Through the work she does in physical therapy, speech-language therapy and preschool, she is walking, talking and much more, Jennifer said. Journee has two older siblings, Jade and Jayden, and a black Lab named Lola. The family lives in Mount Joy. “Schreiber has helped Journee reach milestones we were told would be impossible,” Jennifer said. “Between preschool and therapies, Journee has a phenomenal team that never gives up on her. They have become family.” Sam was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of 18 months. He is now 12 years old and has been receiving physical therapy from Schreiber for the past 10 years. His greatest accomplishments have been recovering from leg surgery and becoming strong enough to go from crawling to walking. Sam has a twin sister, Isabelle, and two guinea pigs, Juice Box and Capri. Sam and his parents, Casey and Mike Trone, live in Manor Township. “Over the past 10 years,” Casey said, “the one constant has been the amazing staff at Schreiber, encouraging Sam and providing support and information to us as parents to provide the best care for Sam.” Ellery, age 7, was diagnosed with arthrogryposis, a rare condition that developed in utero. LEADS Seeks Flower Basket Sponsors Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS) has begun its annual Adopt-A-Basket fundraiser. Proceeds will go toward nearly 300 flower baskets that will be hung from lampposts in downtown Lancaster. In recent years, LEADS added additional flower baskets to its program to include West King Street from Prince to Charlotte streets. The baskets are adopted by businesses and members of the community for a fee, which includes daily watering and care from May through October. The baskets can be adopted in memory or honor of someone chosen by the donor, and a plaque with that designation will hang from

each basket. Donors also can include a photo on their adopted basket’s plaque for an additional fee. The flowers will be grown by Frey’s Greenhouses on Columbia Avenue in Lancaster. To adopt a basket by Tuesday, May 10, visit www.lancasterleads .org/adopt-a-basket. If supplies remain, baskets will continue to be available for purchase after May 10. The baskets will be hung on Sunday, May 15. LEADS is an all-volunteer group that also provides all city holiday decorations, including the Penn Square Christmas tree. LEADS is an all-volunteer organization that operates solely through donations.

Each step you take on Saturday, May 21, can make a difference in a child’s life. The ninth annual Arm of Hope 5K will be held beginning at 9 a.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy. Proceeds will benefit Arm of Hope, a Ghanaian-run ministry. “It’s a fun event for a great cause,” said Greg Grove, one of the race directors, noting that the course is mostly flat and very family-friendly. “We take walkers, strollers, dogs, families. If you’re a serious runner, we have trophies, but if you just want to come and walk the course, you are welcome.” The top male and female finishers will receive hand-carved trophies from Ghana, while baked goods will be awarded to the winners in various age groups. “We’re really excited to bring the baked goods back,” Grove said, explaining that the treats were not offered after the race for the past two years in the height of the pandemic. “Volunteers at the church make the baked goods and everyone loves them.” Additionally, a variety of door prizes will be avail-

able for all participants. Registration for the 5K is by donation only, with proceeds helping to fund programs for children living in the slums of Ghana. “Part of the Arm of Hope ministry is providing a summer camp program, where the kids get together to do fun activities, learn about Jesus, do crafts, play games,” Grove explained. “It’s something the kids really look forward to. They get three warm meals a day and they get to sleep on a mattress, which is something they don’t normally get to do.” Grove noted that it costs $50 to send a child to camp and that funding is provided by both the 5K proceeds and additional donations.
