Hempfield

Hempfield students show their gratitude with food drive

Hempfield School District students are grateful for the support they receive from the community.

They are happy to return the favor.

The 15th annual Hempfield Food Drive, presented by JK Mechanical, concluded Feb. 28. Students in all 10 buildings combined to collect more than 4,900 pounds of nonperishable food items, which were donated to the Hempfield Area Food Pantry. The high school Student Council also donated 2,192 pounds

in November.

The food collected in February included elbow macaroni, egg noodles, macaroni and cheese, jelly, cereal, and canned items such as pineapple, peaches, fruit cocktail, spinach, mixed vegetables, corn, tomatoes, kidney beans, carrots, chicken noodle soup, spaghetti sauce, and beef and chicken broth.

The Student Council led the February food drive at Landisville Middle School. “We tried to tell everybody on the announcements about it throughout the week, and I think prizes helped a lot,” seventh-grader Lenae Ross

said. “A lot of people are competitive, and that helped bring in more food.”

Fellow Student Council member Reshma Lalani, an eighth-grader, said, “It’s important to give back to the community because our school does a lot for us. The students can make a really big impact through the food drive.”

Eighth-grader Leah Guatta said Landisville Middle School’s Student Council meets regularly to discuss issues in the school and plan dances and spirit week activities. “We talk about making our school community a better place,” said Leah.

Lancaster Liederkranz Chorus is inviting the community to “kommt und learnt die Deutsche Kultur kennen.”

That translates to “come and get to know the German culture.”

The choral club will provide the opportunity to do just that when it holds its spring concert Saturday, May 3, at 4 p.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 85 Brandt Blvd., Landisville. “The venue is a lovely place to sing,” Lancaster Liederkranz

“If you’re looking for a getaway that’s within driving distance of home, this is the perfect place to find it,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair. “Come here and see what’s right in your backyard.”

The PA Family Travel Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.

The event will feature free entry and free parking.

Organized by Where & When Pennsylvania, a free seasonal travel magazine, the PA Family Travel Fair will spotlight more than 50 vendors.

“We will have destination marketing organizations from all over the state,” Royal shared. “Probably the farthest one is VisitErie or Warren County, but we have representatives from across Pennsylvania, from northeast Pennsylvania to Bucks County and the Laurel Highlands.”

Several of the vendors have

participated in the fair since its inception in 2018, while others are new this year.

“We have some historical railroads coming,” Royal remarked. “We have amusement parks, museums and historic sites.”

Many of the vendors will feature giveaways for items ranging from day passes to overnight trips.

The grand prize children’s giveaway will be an eight pack of all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park in Tipton.

The grand prize giveaway, sponsored by Visit Potter-Tioga, will feature a four-night stay for four at the Penn Wells Lodge in Wellsboro, plus vouchers for covered wagon tours, gift cards to local businesses and spending money for the trip.

Topaz Balloons will be on-site providing balloon art from 10 a.m. to noon, and face painting will be offered by Jain Falcon from 1 to 3 p.m.

At noon, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present an educational show.

“(The Clyde Peeling’s representative) usually brings big snakes and other reptiles,” Royal said. “Last year, he brought a baby crocodile.

His show is very popular.”

Mascots - including Echo the bat from Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks as well as Johnny the Long John from Achenbach’s Pastrieswill also roam the event and will be available for pictures.

Royal initiated the idea for the PA Family Travel Fair in 2017 when she realized the wealth of vacation

Hempfield

resources right in our state.

“The state of PA markets to outside areas,” she said. “We’re not going to see commercials for our own state. I want to give people new ideas of places they can visit in their home state.”

According to the most recent statistics, tourism brings in $76 billion to the Pennsylvania economy, Royal said.

“That’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b.’ Tourism is a big economic driver,” she stated.

Jimmy Stewart was from Indiana, Pa., and there is a whole museum dedicated to him there. They do an … It’s a Wonderful Life’ festival in the winter. … We have beaches in Pennsylvania, too. Presque Isle Park in Erie has 13 beaches, including Sunset Beach, which has the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see.”

Above all, she noted, the PA Family Travel Fair is a family-friendly, fun way to learn more and find vacation ideas.

And if you don’t want to travel far this summer, don’t worry. Local attractions will be represented at the fair as well. Elizabethtown-based Stone Gables Estate, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Ronks and Oregon Dairy in Lititz are just a few of the local participants.

Church posts concert, storytelling event

As part of the Church of the Apostles’ 50th anniversary celebrations, the church will host a performance by the Philadelphia Handbell Ensemble (PHE) on Saturday, May 3, at 4 p.m. at the church, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. This community ensemble is composed of auditioned, advanced-level handbell ringers from the greater Philadelphia area.

PHE’s repertoire includes original compositions, classical transcriptions, and other music in diverse genres,

showcasing the performers’ mastery of advanced ringing techniques that go beyond traditional handbell sounds. The ensemble also explores collaborations with players of other instruments and expands the use of handbells in the performing arts. Through workshops, conferences, and community outreach, PHE promotes the art and education of handbell ringing.

The concert is free of charge, courtesy of the Apostles Academy of

Arts and Science. A freewill offering will be received.

The Church of the Apostles has also planned a presentation by member, photographer, and author Bill Hager on Saturday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Hager will share two stories, “Evangeline: Guardian of the Muted Forest” and “Angel Island.”

The event is free of charge, courtesy of the Apostles Academy of Arts and Science. A freewill offering will be received.

HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We are looking for volunteers to visit with patients receiving hospice care in your local community.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Registration closes one week before orientation. Please call for more information and to reserve your seat: 717-367-1121, ext. 33024, or visit MasonicVillageHospice.org/volunteer/registration.

Chorus director Barry Sawyer said. “The acoustics in Zion are phenomenal. The audience will enjoy that, as well.”

There is no admission charge; a freewill offering will be accepted.

“We want to introduce the community to the German culture, and hopefully it will spark some people to come and join (Lancaster Liederkranz),” chorus president Linda Husler said. “We are open to anyone. We have people here who can’t read music, and that’s OK. Don’t know the German language? That’s fine. It’s all taught in here. It’s open to anyone who is interested in singing and preserving the culture. We have a really good time in here.”

One of the 13 numbers will feature the women, and another will be performed by the men. Except for one verse of “Edelweiss,” the lyrics will be in German. Attendees will receive a packet of the English translations when they enter the concert.

“We try to preserve the German heritage and the German culture through song and dance,” Husler said. “Our group specifically, we do German folk songs, other chorus repertoire, mostly by German or Austrian composers. Ninety-five percent of our concert is in German.”

Sawyer stated that one of his friends remarked, “Oh, you just sing folk songs.” The director bristled at that depiction. “Something that’s important to me is that the impression of our chorus shows a

broader picture of our repertoire,” Sawyer said.

Many attendees will be familiar with the composers of songs that will be performed with Sarah Repkoe playing piano.

“We go way beyond just German folk songs,” said Sawyer. “We are also including some of the masters. We’re doing some Felix Mendelssohn. We’re doing some Johannes Brahms, but also in German. We do something from Rodgers and Hammerstein, and we always end with something that is becoming a signature piece, a number called ‘Alte Kameraden,’ which means ‘old friends, old comrades.’ That’s a little bit of a rousing number to end our programs with.”

Liederkranz is a German word that translates to “wreath of songs” or “garland of songs.” The chorus had 30 members before Sawyer took over as director in 2019, and that number has risen to 55. The membership includes people in their 20s to people in their 80s, married couples, siblings, and mothers and sons.

“The chorus has grown in the last couple years, which is good, and we’re always looking for new members,” said Husler.

The chorus rehearses once a week from September through May and performs several concerts. “It’s a relaxed thing, yet we know when it’s time to get to work, and we want to make the concert the best we can,” Husler said. “We don’t want it to be shoddy. We want it to be a first-class concert.”

Sawyer is the latest in a long

line of the distinguished directors of the group, which was founded in 1880. His grandfather, Charles Messer, a German immigrant who lived in the Cabbage Hill neighborhood of Lancaster city, also sang with the Lancaster Liederkranz Chorus.

“(The concert) will give people exposure to our German heritage,” Sawyer said. “Lancaster County has the German roots built in through agriculture and the Amish. This gives another picture of the immigrants coming over in the late 19th century, bringing their dance customs, their singing customs. This would give the listener an opportunity to have

some exposure to our efforts to promote the German culture.”

Husler said Lancaster Liederkranz is made up of four cultural groups, two singing groups and two dancing groups. There are 2,000 members of the club, which is located at 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim.

People must be sponsored by a member in order to join the club. There is an orientation process, and then prospective members are voted on at the general meeting on the first Thursday of every month.

Dance performance planned

Ornate Dance Theatre will present its new show, “My Heart, His Home,” on Friday, May 9, at 7 p.m. as well as on Saturday, May 10, at 2 and 7 p.m. The performances will take place at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland.

Inspired by the book “The Great House of God” by Max Lucado and told through movement and spoken word, the narrated dance performance takes a look into each space of the heart as if the heart were a house. Each room holds an encounter with a loving father, friend, counselor, and guide.

Ornate Dance Theatre is a professional dance company, which aims to create a space for young artists to develop their technique and share the love of Christ

with confidence. The artists will perform in the round for the first time.

To purchase tickets,

visit www.cavod.org or call 717-354-3355 on Mondays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Director Barry Sawyer leads the chorus during a rehearsal.
Chorus member Keith Fox came dressed for the occasion.

Food

JK Mechanical sponsors the drive and provided vans to transport the food from the schools to the food pantry.

“We are a family-owned and -operated group,” said Marissa Demeo, who is JK Mechanical’s sales and marketing coordinator. “We

love to give back to the community because our owner (Christopher Leaman) and his entire family are all from this area. He has always put an importance on giving back to the community. His kids grew up in the area, and he wants to help the students and everyone here.”

Market Street Sports Group also participates in the drive.

“Our group handles all the corporate partnerships for Hempfield,” business representative Jason Jasberger said. “We look for companies that want to give back. It’s not just about signage; it’s

making it a better experience for the kids. JK Mechanical has from the very beginning stepped in and been active with the school district. They have a real relationship with the schools. Those are the kinds of businesses we like to have.”

Historical society plans meeting

The East Petersburg Historical Society (EPHS) will host a program on Monday, May 5, at 7 p.m. at the East Petersburg Community Center Building at East Petersburg Community Park, 6051 Pine St., East Petersburg. Robert Alley will share the history of the family of Peter Gottschall, the namesake of East Petersburg. The public is invited to all of our speaker meetings. Before the presentation, the EPHS will hold its annual meeting. All members are encouraged to attend this meeting; a quorum is

required. The EPHS board of directors will review its actions within the last year, including new policies to be approved by the EPHS members and the Daniel Wolf Museum maintenance and upgrades. For more information, contact the East Petersburg Historical Society at www.eastpetehistory.org.

In addition, the archive museum at the Daniel Wolf House, 1905 State St., East Petersburg, is open to the public on the first Saturday of every month throughout the year. The hours of operation are 9 a.m. to noon.
