HYA Concludes Basketball Season Spring/Summer Ball On Hold The most recent Hempfield Youth Association (HYA) intramural (rec) basketball season closed out in a flourish with an exciting boys’ grade 4U title game. More than 100 fans attended the event, which ended with an attempted

buzzer beater shot that circled the rim and then tipped out. The final score was the G4U Reds 30 and the G4U Silverstreaks 28. “Kudos to both teams for the effort they put in,” said HYA president Fran Lukawski. Lukawski noted that during the

winter and early spring, HYA offers travel basketball teams for boys and girls in grades five and six and intramural basketball play for girls in grades one through six and boys in grades one through four. Girls’ softball and boys’ baseball programs are typically held in spring and early summer. HYA’s programs are open to Hempfield residents. “We are currently in a holding status

Scouts Seek Food Donations By Dayna M. Reidenouer

In their Scouting for Food campaigns, Boy Scouts go from house to house, distributing bags on one weekend and collecting filled bags the next. Troop 64, however, is hoping the community gets on board with a food drive conducted in reverse. Rather than visit individual homes, troop members have set out bins at their own residences, and community members are welcome to put donations of nonperishable food items in the marked receptacles. The collected items will be taken to the Hempfield Area Food Pantry, which is housed by Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Landisville. Assistant Scoutmaster Nina Evans shared that the items that are most needed right now are elbow macaroni, boxes of pasta, egg noodles, ramen noodles, soup, tuna, 1-pound packages of rice, jelly, jam, and 18-ounce containers of peanut butter. “But all food items are

due to the COVID-19 actions, and as soon as it becomes safe to do so, we look forward to opening up our programs once again,” Lukawski commented. “For basketball enthusiasts, we should have postings on the website offering guidance into next winter’s season going up after Labor Day.” For information about the HYA and its programs, visit www.playhya.com.

District Announces Plans For Graduation, Prom The Hempfield School District has announced that it is working on answers to pressing questions for the Class of 2020, including prom and graduation. “As other districts begin making decisions about their events, we know that students and their families will question if this changes our plans for Hempfield High School seniors,” said superintendent Mike Bromirski. As of April 20, prom had been rescheduled from Saturday, May 9, to Friday, June 19. Further details will be announced as soon as they are finalized. Hempfield High School has held commencement at Franklin & Marshall College for at least five years and had planned to do so again this year. The district has maintained its contract with the college to hold commencement on Tuesday, June 2, and plans for an in-person celebration are
