Cruise On Over To The Annual Vagabonds Car Show

The Hempfield High School boys’ bowling team is raising money to attend the U.S. High School Bowling National Championship in June.

Bowling For A National Championship Title fter an incredible season, the Hempfield High School (HHS) boys’ bowling team qualified for the U.S. High School Bowling National Championship, which will be held in Louisville, Ky., from Saturday, June 18, to Monday, June 20. This is the first time in HHS history that members of the boys’ bowling team have qualified both individually and as a team for the national championship. The team consists of senior Caleb Mertz, senior Mitchell Barnes, senior Logan Moyer, junior Xander Green, sophomore Derick Keller, sophomore Aaron Zimmerman, and freshman Priest McKenzie.

“It’s just incredible that this

group of boys ... even through the whole COVID experience, still found time to love the sport, participate in it, and then just to come out of it like a phoenix rising and just crush it,” said Sara Johns, the mother of Moyer.

Within the Lancaster-Lebanon (L-L) League, which consists of 26 schools from Lebanon and Lancaster counties, the HHS boys’ bowling team was named L-L League Baker Tournament Champions, L-L League Section One Champions, and L-L League Champions. The team placed third in the Eastern Pennsylvania Regionals for High School Bowling, where the team also set a new state record for a sixgame baker total. The boys also placed fourth in the Pennsylvania

State Championship.

“We were told it was our year, and we proved it,” stated Moyer.

“Seeing Hempfield placing in the top for every tournament was very confusing for people because no one knew who we were, but they do now.”

The HHS boys’ bowling team needs to raise $7,000 to cover all the expenses to travel to Louisville and compete with the best high school bowlers in the country at the U.S. High School Bowling National Championship. The funds will cover food, travel, lodging, uniforms, and event registration fees. The boys will compete all day on June 18 as a team, then individually on June 19 and June 20 in the Singles Championship.

With the school year coming to an end and all of the bowlers working part-time jobs, the team is trying to find time to practice and fundraise. The boys must register for the national championship by Wednesday, June 1 - the date by which they aim to reach their fundraising goal.

“The community’s support would be so incredible and show the team that the community is proud of them,” stated Johns.

According to Kristin Troop, president of the East Petersburg Events Committee, it is the mission of the East Petersburg Events Committee to sponsor and host community events, projects, activities, programs, and public improvements. In 2010, the Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club formed a partnership with the East Petersburg Events Committee to host the inaugural “Spring Kickoff ” cruise, the Vagabonds Car Show. Based in Landisville, Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club was established in 1958.

The 13th annual Vagabonds Car Show will return on Saturday, May 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will take place at the East Petersburg Community Park, 6051 Pine St., East Petersburg.

Black Knight Track Teams Split With Warwick

TENNIS Hempfield finished the season at 11-3, concluding with two 5-0 victories. On April 19, Eli Wroley and Jonah Comeaux downed McCaskey’s doubles team 9-7 while Trent Meyers (6-0, 6-2), Andre Hurst (6-0, 6-1), Eric Jordan (6-3, 6-4) and Cooper Lehman (6-3, 6-1) posted straight set singles wins.

Worley and Comeaux were 6-0, 6-1 winners at doubles while Meyers and Tom Gross won their doubles match 6-2, 6-2 the next day at Ephrata.

Lehman, Jordan, and Hurst each won at singles.

BASEBALL The Black Knights brought out the bats in back-to-back victories this past week. They blanked Lebanon 10-0 on Tuesday, April 19 on the road.

The next day, they dominated Conestoga Valley 16-1.

SOFTBALL How does a softball team bounce back from a 5-0 defeat in which the hitters struck out nine times and were held to only two hits?

How about scoring 17 runs on 17 hits in its very next game? That was what Hempfield did in a Thursday game at McCaskey, topping the Red Tornado 17-4.

The Knights improved to 45 and evened their league record to 3-3. Six of the Hempfield starters had multiple hits. Elizabeth Williams doubled and tripled, driving in two runs. Fellow senior Bailey Ray stroked a double and drove in two runs as well.

Carley Ernst (2-for-2, 2 RBI) slugged a home run while Dolcy Whitcraft went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs batted in. She also stole a base - one of seven by Hempfield.

Sydney Weaver earned the win, shortened to five innings by the mercy rule. She helped herself at the plate, going 2for-3 with a run.

As if scoring 17 runs and winning a game in five innings on the mercy rule wasn’t dominant enough, the Knights topped Lebanon 20-3 on Tuesday, April 19, wrapping up the win in three.

Matt Wiest made eight saves in goal.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE Hempfield topped Lampeter-Strasburg and Conestoga Valley on consecutive evenings with an aggregate score of 259. On Tuesday, April 19, the Knights topped the Pioneers 12-7with Kelsea Dague and Isabelle Masengarb scoring five and four goals, respectively. Whitney Hershey and Brynn Axe also scored while Eryn Murphy made six saves.

In Wednesday’s 13-2 win, Masengarb pelted the Buckskins with five goals. Dague, Axe and Abby Gingrich each scored two while Claire Skovera and Hattie Mack each scored one.

Knights had scored three times in each of the previous three frames. He also had an RBI single early in the game.

Josh Toole also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly while Hunter Williams needed to pitch only three innings because of the mercy rule to earn a win.

Logan Harelson went four innings to earn the win at Lebanon. Noah Costa finished with one inning in relief.

Fiore and Dunlap each drove in a run in the third.

Cameron Berger’s bases-loaded two-run single highlighted the six-run fourth. Chuck Sheerer also knocked in two in the inning.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL Keeping their opponent under 20 points in all three sets, the Knights topped the Red Tornado 3-0 on Tuesday, April 19.

Dante Keener finished with 10 kills and Caden Bonner had 29 assists as Hempfield won 25-11, 25-16 and 25-15.

The win improved the Knights to 6-0 in league play.

Mason Orth finished with five aces and Cole Overbaugh registered two blocks.

BOYS’ LACROSSE Hempfield improved to 8-1 (5-1 league) with a 24-6 win at Penn Manor on Monday, April 18.

The conditions were brisk and so were the Knights’ 49 shots on goal which, among other highlights, included hat tricks by Jason Hilton and Toby Marco, the latter of whom also had four assists.

Max Grube led all scorers with seven goals and one assist.

Hempfield and Warwick competed in a LancasterLebanon League track & field dual meet at Lititz on a brisk, windy Tuesday afternoon.

The Warriors topped the Knights in the girls’ meet, 9546, dropping Hempfield to 12 on the year. In the boys’ meet, the Knights bounced back nicely from the previous week’s loss to Cedar Crest, defeating Warwick 108-33.

“It was a tough day to compete,” head coach Curt Rogers stated. “Many of the girls rose to the occasion and pushed through - especially the distance runners, who had to face the backstretch wind multiple times.”

Ashley Page had a personal best of 14:15.3 in the 3,200 meter, finishing second. Lydia Herr’s personal best of 14:51.2 earned her third place.

Page also anchored the 4 x 800 relay team, which also included Paige Harrington, Ava Pagano, and Katie Gardner.

Speaking of relays, the firstplace time of 55.6 seconds was a record for the foursome of Mya Thompson, Alivia Groff, Arianaliz Olivencia and Brooke Smith in the 4x100.

Smith also had a personal best, taking second in the high jump at 4-foot-6.

Smith earned first with a personal best (12.9) in the 100. Mia Sheldon (13.0) was second in the event. She also took second in the 100 hurdles with a personal best 17.2. Sheldon had a personal best 14-8.75 in the long jump.

in the 400. Kylie Ridilla was second (70.1) while Camryn Sweltzer’s 76.6 (3rd) was another PR. The Hempfield girls set five personal bests in the 200 and 10 in the 100, including Smith’s.

The boys’ team featured Ryan Criste’s L-L League meet qualifying high jump of 6foot-2, which earned him first and set a personal record.

Logan Muhlberg, who won the 400 in 55.1, had a league meet qualifying time of 23.1 in the 200 while Eli Hinton (23.4) took second.

In the 100, Diellon Trinaku and Xavier Peralta both had league meet qualifying times 11.0 and 11.1 respectively, as they earned first and second.

Peralta, Hinton and Trinaku joined Sawyer Barmore for a first-place time of 46.1 in the 4x100.

“It was a convincing win on a tough day for competition,” Rogers said. “Joe Fahrney pulled off a victory in the 3200, kicking for the win after battling the gusts for eight laps.

“Logan Muhlberg earned three first-places - the 400, 200 and as the anchor leg of the 4x400,” noted the coach.

Tate Martin was also a triple winner, taking the two hurdling events as well as the triple jump.

Aidan Hodge was the 800 winner, qualifying for the league championships with his 2:03.5 time.

Pete Wenzel won the javelin (121-11) and Deyvid Palepale set a personal best of 39-6 in the shot put, finishing second.

Vince Wisotzkey won the discus at 115 feet.

Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of Lancaster County will host a drive-through chicken barbecue on Friday, May 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. at its office, 5307 Main St., East Petersburg. All proceeds will benefit CEF’s teen summer missionaries.

Peters’ Barbecue will provide food for purchase at the fundraiser.

Each meal will include a half-chicken, a dinner roll, applesauce, chips, a whoopie pie and a drink. Halfchickens will also be available.

Attendees may pick up food without leaving their cars.

CEF’s Christian Youth in Action (CYIA) accepted 12 teens, who will teach children about Jesus this summer throughout the county via various programs, including 5-Day Club, vacation Bible school and Camp Good News. As missionaries, the teens must raise their own support, which will be given to them as compensation for the work they do this summer.

“The Artist Within” Reception Slated Car Show from pg 1 United Disabilities Services (UDS) Foundation will host an opening reception for “The Artist Within - A Unique Gallery Show” on Friday, April 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the UDS Corporate Office, 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster.

The event is open to the public.

This show will feature distinctive paintings and sculpture by five Lancaster-area artists who are gaining wide recognition for their work and who are all clients of UDS. They are painters Kate

Wayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, will host a jazz worship service on Sunday, May 1, at 10 a.m. The music will include arrangements of hymns as well as jazz standards.

Charlie Postas, a recent addition to the Wayside team, will lead on the piano, joined by local professional guest musicians Laurie Astree on saxophone, Nate Wingert on trombone, Kelly Parker on bass, and Jim Cluck on drums.

After retiring as a New Jersey music teacher last January, Postas relocated to the region and sought a new church family in a venue where he could make a difference. Postas is a career musician, entertainer, and leader in education, church, and community. He joined Wayside’s music team under the direction of Janelle Pabon, who provided accompaniment during the staff search.

ing by 82 STEM-related professionals from dozens of local companies. The seventh- through 12th-grade students’ competition included months of research, virtual presentation of their entries and in-person judges’ interviews with the finalists.

The North Museum Science and Engineering Fair is affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair. Through sponsors such as Amazon, Eurofins, Deb Ehleiter/Thrivent Financial, Corteva, Electron Energy Corporation and Johnson & Johnson, the fair is free to participants.

Founded in 1953, the North Museum of Nature and Science has the mission to enable knowledge of nature and science by inspiring individuals, engaging communities and connecting organizations.

“The 24 Hour Plays” Planned Creative Works will present “The 24 Hour Plays” live and in person at the Lancaster Cemetery. The 24 Hour Plays will be performed on Saturday, May 14, at 6 p.m. at the Caretaker’s House, 205 E. Lemon St., Lancaster. The event will mark the 11th year “The 24 Hour Plays” have been produced in Lancaster.

Six writers, six directors, 25 actors, and a production team will write, rehearse and perform six 10minute plays in a 24-hour period.

There will only be one performance of the plays. The event will begin at the Caretaker’s House, and patrons will move throughout the cemetery for the rest of the performances.

The six plays will have undergone a process that will start on the evening of Friday, May 13, with writers choosing their actors from a pool of talent. The six writers will write through the night and hand their work to the directors early in the morning on Saturday, May 14, the day of the performance. After negotiating for their choice of play, directors will work with their actors and a crew of stage technicians to prepare for the 6 p.m. performance.

Hope covered approximately $1.4 million of unreimbursed care costs or charitable care. As part of a capital campaign renovation project, Mt. Hope has fully upgraded its 29 resident rooms and has fully renovated the first-floor women’s and men’s public restrooms. Funds are still needed to upgrade the main parking lot of the facility as well as the resident common areas such as the resident first- and second-floor lounges, the dining hall and the conference room.

“The Medicaid funding gap makes it increasingly difficult for Mt. Hope to

absorb the cost of benevolent care without searching for other alternatives to offset rising costs and continuing with creative fundraising initiatives,” Wilson said. “The drive-through meal … provides a way to not only support the Mt. Hope residents, but also ensures Mt. Hope remains a relevant and inviting care option for many in need in our community.”

Flag-in Day Will Honor Veterans A Flag-in Day will take place at the Lancaster Cemetery, 205 E. Lemon St., Lancaster, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, and will continue on Sunday, May 1, if needed. The event will honor over 1,200 veterans buried in the Lancaster Cemetery. Volunteers are needed to help at the event.

Volunteers will place flags at each veterans grave, place over 500 new grave markers, and reposition older markers to meet cemetery standards for placement. Volunteers will be asked to take photographs of the stone, marker, and flag once placed and to share these digitally with the cemetery.

The purpose of this effort is to honor each U.S. veteran interred at the cementary, provide photographic records for families and for future repair projects, and to record

exact lot mapping for future Flag-in Flag-out days. All participants will be asked to read and sign a release the day of the event.

Volunteers should consider bringing the following items to the event: a clipboard and pen or pencil, sturdy shoes, a camera with an SD card or a cell phone with a camera and Google or Amazon Prime access to share photos, snacks or a lunch and beverages, and a wagon or cart to move and carry markers.

Yutzy has been impressed by the talents and efforts of the students in the show. She noted that Hansel, also played by Sommers, and Gretel, played by Daisy Gettle, both are working to learn German accents. “I enjoy writing things that challenge the students,” she said. “I want to grow them as actors and people.”

She noted that giving students a fun challenge and seeing them make a role work is a joy. “They come alive on stage (when) they explore what they didn’t know they could do before.”

According to Yutzy, the message of the show should resonate with audiences in a society where social media is so prevalent. “There are so many ways we instantly judge

someone by how they look or dress or what they post politically or religiously,” said Yutzy. “(I hope) that audiences would ask if they instantly judge … and to take a (moment to think) before they judge (rather than) decide if people are shady or respectable based on the way they dress or speak.”

Heritage Chorale Posts Concerts singers dedicated to excellence in the choral art form. A central focus of the event will be to pray about seven areas: medical and mental health communities, people in need, families, businesses, government/ military/law enforcement, education, and churches.

Co-sponsors of the Lancaster County National Day of Prayer are The Friendship Foundation and WDAC, which will air the event on 94.5 FM as well as at www.wdac.com.
