Find your next adventure at the PA Family Travel Fair

“If you’re looking for a getaway that’s within driving distance of home, this is the perfect place to find it,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair. “Come here and see what’s right in your backyard.”

The PA Family Travel Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.

The event will feature free entry and free parking.

Organized by Where & When Pennsylvania, a free seasonal travel magazine, the PA Family Travel Fair will spotlight more than 50 vendors.

“We will have destination marketing organizations from all over the state,” Royal shared. “Probably the farthest one is VisitErie or Warren County, but we have representatives from across Pennsylvania, from northeast Pennsylvania to Bucks County and the Laurel Highlands.”

Several of the vendors have participated in the fair since its inception in 2018, while others are new this year.

“We have some historical railroads coming,” Royal remarked. “We have amusement parks, museums and historic sites.”

Many of the vendors will feature giveaways for items ranging from day passes to overnight trips.

The grand prize children’s giveaway will be an eight pack of all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park in Tipton.

The grand prize giveaway, sponsored by Visit Potter-Tioga,

will feature a four-night stay for four at the Penn Wells Lodge in Wellsboro, plus vouchers for covered wagon tours, gift cards to local businesses and spending money for the trip.

Topaz Balloons will be on-site providing balloon art from 10 a.m. to noon, and face painting will be offered by Jain Falcon from 1 to 3 p.m.

At noon, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present an educational show.

“(The Clyde Peeling’s representative) usually brings big

snakes and other reptiles,” Royal said. “Last year, he brought a baby crocodile. His show is very popular.”

Mascots - including Echo the bat from Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks as well as Johnny the Long John from Achenbach’s Pastries - will also roam the event and will be available for pictures.

Royal initiated the idea for the PA Family Travel Fair in 2017 when she realized the wealth of vacation resources right in our state.

The annual Farmdale Festival and Silent Auction will be held Friday, May 2.

The festival will run from 4:30 to 8 p.m. outside in front of the school, which is located at 695 Prospect Road, Mount Joy. The auction will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the gym/ cafeteria.

If it rains, the festival will be moved to the gym/cafeteria, and the auction will be held in the LGI room on the second floor.

The events, which are both open to the public, are sponsored by the Farmdale Faculty Parent Association (FPA), and all the proceeds are used for class field trips, classroom supplies, special assemblies, library materials, and other educational programs and needs for kindergarten

through sixth-grade students.

“I think (the FPA is) really important because it allows us to support our teachers and our families,” auction co-chair Jess Brandt said. “The FPA is kind of like a bridge between the families of Farmdale and the teachers.”

The festival will feature food vendors, face painting,

Homefields Care Farm, 150 Letort Road, Millersville, will hold its annual Open Farm event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27.

“It’s the one day we open our farm and our grounds to the community and welcome anyone in the community to come and see what we do, learn about our mission, learn about opportunities to volunteer, and learn about the CSA (community-supported agriculture) that

we do,” said Dominique Didier, vice president of Homefields’ board of directors and the chairperson of events. “We make it a fun day.”

Program coordinator Andrew Phillips and farm manager Tony Beers will lead tours of the certified organic farm at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:30 p.m.

“We take you around the farm, explain what our farming practices are, how we treat the land, what types of crops we grow and how,” Phillips said. “You will get to see the full property and

outside areas,” she said. “We’re not going to see commercials for our own state. I want to give people new ideas of places they can visit in their home state.”

According to the most recent statistics, tourism brings in $76 billion to the Pennsylvania economy, Royal said.

“That’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b.’ Tourism is a big economic driver,” she stated. “It’s $4.7 billion in state and local taxes, and that’s huge. We want to keep those tax dollars here. We want to encourage people to keep their money in the state.”

Michael from Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland presents a program at last year’s PA Family Travel Fair.

And if you don’t want to travel far this summer, don’t worry. Local attractions will be represented at the fair as well. Elizabethtown-based Stone Gables Estate, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Ronks and Oregon Dairy in Lititz are just a few of the local participants.

Over the years, Royal has enjoyed watching people return annually to the event to learn more about what’s in our state, and she likes seeing people discover something new.

“I think people are shocked at all the things you can do in Pennsylvania,” she said. “People don’t know that

Jimmy Stewart was from Indiana, Pa., and there is a whole museum dedicated to him there. They do an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ festival in the winter. … We have beaches in Pennsylvania, too. Presque Isle Park in Erie has 13 beaches, including Sunset Beach, which has the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see.”

Above all, she noted, the PA Family Travel Fair is a family-friendly, fun way to learn more and find vacation ideas.

“There’s no selling, no pressure,” Royal said. “You don’t have to buy anything or sign up for anything. Just come, have a conversation with the vendors and pick up information to start planning your next trip.”

community members. In the one-hour webinar, Jaq Payne, national director of the National Champion Tree Program, will share how community members may help to find, measure, and protect these trees. Continuing education credits are available for a fee. Registration is required by visiting https://exten sion.psu.edu and searching for “Finding America’s Giants: the National Champion Tree Program.”

The FPA meets at the school on the second Thursday of every month, and those meetings are open to any Farmdale parent who is interested to learn what’s happening within the school, Swan said.

The dates and themes are April 27, “Hosea: Scandalous Love”; May 4, “Joel: Only One Thing Is Wrong”; May 11, “Amos: Unpopular Love”; and

May 18, “Malachi: Healing Love.” The activity on May 25 will be a Memorial Day weekend picnic.

The Veritas Community gathers every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of HUB 450, 450 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The first 15 minutes of the event are dedicated to fellowship time. all the different projects we have going on. Things you might not see day to day as a customer but are part of our daily operation and outreach efforts. It is beautiful in spring. Everything’s blooming. It’s a fun time to get to see the whole property and experience the place.”

Beers will take visitors behind the scenes. “Everybody enjoys our organic vegetables, but we will give a peek under the hood and show how the vegetables are made,” he said. “We will explain how greenhouses work.”

Beers will explain the tilling process and how the equipment works. “People will get a sense of what farmers are doing to produce these wonderful vegetables that they’re eating every week,” he said. “It’s to build trust so people can see our farming practices

and what it takes to have a clean farm.”

People will have the opportunity to explore the greenhouses, visit pickyour-own fields, and go home with a DIY project.

There will be a photo booth, a treasure hunt, crafts for families, and activities for kids. Families are welcome to hold a picnic. Koshary Station will be selling food, and Jimmy Juice will be on-site.

“The overarching goal is we want to welcome everyone to Homefields,” said Allison Hawthorne, president of the organization’s board of directors.

Hawthorne said the event “is not transactional,” but the CSA is how Homefields funds its purpose and mission.

Homefields is best known for its CSA, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Lettuce explain.

houses on the property, which both have three people with disabilities living there. Homefields supports the licensed provider that supplies 24-hour staffing.

Cristian Phibbs is an employee who has an intellectual developmental difficulty and has become a valuable farmhand. “This is awesome. I came here because this is a nice place,” said Phibbs. “Now I get to work and socialize with people, which I did not get to do in my old jobs. And I get paid for it.”

“We do a lot of things on this farm that people probably don’t realize,” Beers said. “We have high concentrations of extremely endangered plants that we’re propagating. We have high school kids with IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) who come every week and learn farming from us. We’ve got native plant flower gardens. There are opportunities for people to volunteer and be part of it. There are a lot of things that aren’t our CSA.”

The farm employs, houses, and provides opportunities to people with disabilities. Homefields’ workforce-training program gives high-schoolers served by IU13 the tools and experience they can use in greenhouses, nurseries, and farms.

The “home” in Homefields comes from the two

Homefields provides workers like Phibbs with an opportunity to work in a competitive environment while learning skills. Among his many responsibilities are planting seeds, caring for the lawn, and picking fruits and vegetables. “I never understood this job before I came here. Now I do,” Phibbs said. “This is interesting to me. This job is better for me. I love it.”

There is another charitable component. After customers pick up their fruits and vegetables over weekends, the rest of the produce is given to Loft Community Partnership, which is in Millersville.

Beers became emotional when detailing the food donations. “All of that food goes to the Loft, and they make sure it gets in the hands of people in our community who might be struggling,” he said. Phillips estimated the items donated by Homefields benefit 250 local families.

Volunteer Carol Welsh said, “When a group of people come together to support an organic farm, they get an opportunity to live out a mission that brings the community together. It’s unique. It doesn’t exist much anymore, so we’re proud to have everybody here.”

The Open Farm event is free, but registration is encouraged. To register, go to www.homefields.org/ open-farm-2025. For more information about Homefields Care Farm, call 717-572-2719 or email info@homefields.org.

Events to honor legacy of Appenzellers

To honor the legacy of Henry and Ella Dodge Appenzeller, First United Methodist Church (UMC), 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster, will host a weekend of music, lectures, and reflection on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27. This year marks the 140th anniversary of the Appenzellers’ arrival in Korea, a pivotal moment in the history of Protestant Christianity in the region. The weekend’s activities will celebrate the historical ties between Lancaster and Korea, highlighting the enduring connection between the two communities through the universal language of music and shared faith.

Henry Appenzeller, a native of Souderton, was a member and assistant pastor at First UMC before being commissioned as a missionary to Korea in 1884. He and his wife, Ella, arrived in Korea on Easter Sunday in 1885. Henry played a foundational role in introducing Protestant Christianity to Korea, establishing a Methodist church in Seoul; founding Paichai Hakdang, now Pai Chai University; and contribut-

ing to the translation of the New Testament to Korean. His efforts fostered education and cultural exchange between Korea and the U.S.

The celebratory weekend will begin with lunch on April 26 at 12:15 p.m., followed by a lecture - “What’s So Special About Appenzeller?” - presented by Kale Yu, professor of religion and philosophy at High Point University, N.C.

On April 27 at 8:15 and 10:45 a.m., a choir and full orchestra will present the cantata “All Is Yours” by composer James Ra, who composed the piece to honor the Appenzellers and other missionaries to Korea. At 9:30 a.m., Yu will present a second lecture, “Women’s Advantage: Methodist Women Missionaries and Korean Bible Women.”

Those unable to attend on April 27 are invited to an open rehearsal of “All Is Yours” on April 26 at 10 a.m.

Parking is available in a lot behind the church. Nursery and child care are provided at all Sunday services. For more details, visit www. engagegodfirst.org/events/ appenzeller-weekend or call 717-394-7231.
