Put on Their Dancing Shoes

Director Devon Groff said there is nothing quite like it. Guests can enjoy a unique experience during the Hempfield High School Dance Theatre’s production of “Magic and Mystery.”
Shows will be staged Thursday, April 30, through Sunday, May 3, at the school’s Performing Arts Center, 1555 Kauffman Road, Landisville.
The April 30 show at 7 p.m. is Senior Citizen Preview Night sponsored by the Hempfield Foundation. It is for Hempfield residents age 65 and over; no tickets are required.

Hempfield High School senior Ethan Albright was named 2026 grand champion at the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair (NMSEF) on March 12 at Millersville University. He was chosen from among participating students in grades six through 12 from 23 Lancaster and Lebanon County schools. At the 2025 NMSEF, Albright distinguished himself as Senior Division champion.
Albright and his winning 2026 project, “Bugged Out: A Novel Approach to Reforestation,” competed among more than 250 student finalists, an increase of 39% over 2025 participation levels and the largest level of participation since prior to the pandemic. The

Both students are eligible to compete at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix from Saturday, May 9, through Friday, May 15. The event will feature 1,700 pre-college students from around the world. Should a NMSEF champion choose to attend, the North Museum underwrites the ISEF registration fee. If the grand champion and senior champion choose not to attend, the senior reserve champion is eligible to attend ISEF.

and it’s different from musicals. Other schools have musicals, but this is just dance.”
Groff added, “There’s nothing like this in our surrounding area, and we’ve been around for so long, and we’re such a staple in the community that a lot of people know what to expect when they come into Dance Theatre to a performance. But it’s always different every time. While they know it’s going to be high quality dance, high quality show, high quality tech, they don’t know exactly what they’re walking into, so it’s always a surprise and it’s always a new experience for the audience, which is what we like to give them.”
The process requires teamwork according to CJ and McKenna. “This is very student-run,” said CJ. “There’s a lot of student involvement with tech.”

Restaurant Unveils Name Change and New Menu
Elimar’s Bar & Grill, located at 2309 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, has been renamed Elimar’s Cantina and Taqueria, reflecting a new focus on regional Mexican cuisine inspired by the culinary traditions of Mexico. The restaurant is owned by the Ramirez family, which also operates two other restaurants in the Lancaster area.

“What we really hope that every year the students get out of this is how to form a good work ethic and how to be collaborative with a big group of people and a team,” Groff said. “This year specifically with the theme of our show, we try to teach something throughout with the theme. This year’s theme is obviously ‘Magic and Mystery,’ and we want to really show the students that the magic can be found within them and that they can share that magic with other people.”
Ceremony to Honor Buchanan
The annual wreath-laying ceremony memorializing James Buchanan, 15th president of the United States, will be held on Saturday, April 25. It will begin at 10 a.m. at Woodward Hill Cemetery, 501 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Participants

Chef Gerardo Ramirez recently made the decision to transition away from the Italian and American fare previously served at Elimar’s and return to the bold flavors of his Mexican heritage. The updated menu features several signature dishes, including Jerry nachos topped with steak, chicken, and shrimp, as well as El Patrón tacos and birria tacos, and the signature Elimar burrito. The restaurant also offers a distinctive Mexican burger prepared with a blend of ingredients and seasonings that create a flavor profile unlike a traditional American burger.

Gerardo and his family became restaurant entrepreneurs after losing their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gerardo had worked as a chef for 15 years at Leeds Ltd restaurant in Harrisburg, and he and his family had been talking about opening their own restaurant for years. So, they pooled their saved money, took out a loan, and purchased what had been a vegetarian restaurant on Rohrerstown Road. The Tequila Mexican Grill & Bar was born, and it was a family affair involving Gerardo plus his parents, sister, brother-in-law, and girlfriend. Historic Preservation Award Winners Announced YWCA Opens Award Nominations,
The Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County has announced the recipients of the 2026 C. Emlen Urban Awards. The annual accolades recognize outstanding efforts in historic preservation and are named after noted Lancaster architect Cassius Emlen Urban.
Urban was born in Conestoga in 1863 and died in 1939 after an illustrious career. He designed structures such as the Southern Market; the Watt and Shand Building; the Griest and Hager buildings; Stevens High School; and other notable buildings in Lancaster, Reading, and Hershey.
The honorees will receive certificates from the Historic Preservation Trust and recognition at the annual C. Emlen Urban Awards Ceremony. This year’s invitation-only event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, at the Hamilton Club of Lancaster.

Formerly known as New Holland Machine Company or Case New Holland, CNH has grown into a global conglomerate that its founders never could’ve imagined. But the company will always be linked to the New Holland area - its farming, its work ethic, its ingenuity.
“Here in Lancaster County, we see a lot of farms and a lot of farmers,” said Mark Lowery, the director of dealer development for CNH in North America. “Do people know our story? Certainly, people involved
with agricultural production do. It goes back to, ‘Do you know where your food comes from?’ The broader population in Lancaster County might not know the story. But there’s been a long history of agricultural

The roots of CNH can be traced to a New Holland barn 131 years ago and a gentleman named Abe Zimmerman. Today, CNH, which is headquartered in Great Britain, operates 40 plants around the world; employs a total of 35,000 workers; and generates in excess of $20 billion in global revenue.
“CNH is a global brand, but a lot of people don’t know it was originally named after a town in eastern Lancaster County,” said Lowery. “We owe a lot to this local area and the innovations that made us a global brand.”
CNH still operates a location in its 6,000-resident hometown of New Holland, at 500 Diller Road. But thanks to advances in technology, the operation looks a lot different than it did a century ago.

tion is a 350-acre campus consisting of five buildings - an administration building, a technical center focusing on research, development and design, a building for combine field testing, a technical training center and a home for CNH industrial capital. The local campus also operates a company farm at the site.
The New Holland location of CNH employs about 900 workers.
“I think one of the keys to the evolution is that our pace never slows down for research and development,” said Lowery, “and one of those research and development centers is here in New Holland. It’s about a lot of talented people and having them in the right places. It’s about investing in sites like New Holland and bringing in people who are passionate about the products.”

“We have 11,000 patents registered for products that we invented or innovated,” said Lowery, a resident of Willow Street. “Engineering influences all the products we make.”
“As far as agriculture goes, the farmer and rancher are our primary customers,” continued Lowery. “They use our products to feed and make food. Certainly, the focus is, ‘How do we help people be more efficient?’ Farmers and ranchers have to continue to be more efficient. Our challenge is to use technology to make machines that are more efficient and make people’s lives easier. We help farmers be more profitable.”
After Zimmerman’s initiatives were incorporated in 1903 as New Holland Machine Company, four Lancaster businessmen bought the company in 1940 and partnered with Ed Nolt, the inventor of a small square baler.
“The key innovation that made the site important was the square baler,”
said Lowery. “That propelled New Holland as a company. It had immediate success and it had a global effect.”
During the 1990s, the New Holland enterprise became affiliated with both Ford and Fiat. In 1999, the company that is now CNH was created.
“To have a homegrown company - with local people who have supported it - make a global impact is important to New Holland and Pennsylvania,” said Lowery. “For a lot of folks, from here and across Lancaster County, this company has been very important, and I think they want to see that success continue. There are so many people who have a connection, either people who worked here or whose parents worked here.”
The New Holland location of CNH operates a tour center and company store on site that caters to the curious. The center offers guided walking tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1 p.m. and the company store is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the same days.

Festival to Highlight Choral Music
The Lancaster Festival of Voices will be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26. Organized by Music For Everyone, the festival highlights the power of the human voice to connect people and build community. The festival started in 2013.
On April 25, the festival will highlight Orfeia Women’s Vocal Ensemble, which performs traditional music from Bulgaria and across Eastern Europe. The group’s traditional Balkan music features unusual dissonances, unique rhythms, and lush harmonies.

VisionCorps Posts Call for Artists
VisionCorps is seeking a qualified artist or team of artists to paint a mural on its headquarters building located at 244 N. Queen St., Lancaster, as part of its 100th anniversary celebration. VisionCorps is located on North Queen Street between West Walnut and West Chestnut streets. The brick wall space for the mural measures approximately 1,000 square feet and is intended to wrap around the southeast corner of the building with frontage on both Queen Street and above the driveway entrance.
This commission is open to all professional artists, or a team of artists. Applicants must be age 18 or older, and they preferably should reside in or near Lancaster County. Painting would ideally occur in some capacity on Friday, June 5, to coincide with VisionCorps’ signature fundraising rappel event, Eye Drop 2026.
The mural’s aims include highlighting VisionCorps’ services and celebrating those in the community who are blind or have vision impairments. The design themes should include empowerment, independence, equity, and inclusion, and visual elements could include a white cane, a unique path, and the natural beauty of the landscapes of the five counties served by VisionCorps: Adams, Ches-

VisionCorps is a nonprofit agency that began in Lancaster. Over time, its footprint expanded into southcentral and southeastern Pennsylvania as a resource for individuals with vision loss to learn to live independently. In addition to rehabilitation and preventative services, VisionCorps offers and encourages employment for individuals who are blind. Golf Tournament to Benefit Nonprofits
The Big Swing for Sight, Science, and Education will be held on Monday, May 18, at 9 a.m. at Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Drive, Lebanon. Proceeds will benefit VisionCorps, the Lancaster Science Factory, and the Joshua Montpetit Foundation.
The golf tournament was established by Lisa Shirk, a VisionCorps trustee, in memory of her husband and longtime VisionCorps supporter, Ray Shirk. Ray was a businessman, entrepreneur, and visionary. He was the founder and CEO of the Securus Group, a multifaceted insurance firm that twice earned the honor of Best Places to Work in PA.
