In 2022, Dave Chobanoff of Marietta organized the first Putting for Miracles, a charity golf tournament to benefit children’s hospitals. It was not the first time Chobanoff became involved with the cause; for many years, he has participated in Extra Life and other programs offered through the Children’s Miracle Network to raise funds for the Penn State Health Children’s Hospital in Hershey. Although Chobanoff said he envisioned growing the size of the event and eventually helping it become an annual fundraiser, he was shocked by how quickly Putting for Miracles took off.

“It blew my mind what was accomplished,” Chobanoff said. “When I was first conceiving (Putting for Miracles), I remember someone telling me he could see the event bringing in tens of thousands of dollars. I thought it was crazy talk; I never thought it

would grow this big in two years.”

In 2022, Putting for Miracles drew roughly 60 players, and it raised more than $5,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network. Last year, the fundraiser attracted more than 100 players and doubled its proceeds.

This year, Putting for Miracles will be held on Saturday, May 18, at Leisure Lanes, 3440 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and the mini golf tournament will commence with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Chobanoff has added a cornhole tournament to this year’s event, which will also begin at 10 a.m. A rain date has been set for Sunday, May 19.

Chobanoff continues to expand Putting for Miracles every year. In 2023, the event featured multiple vendors and food tracks, and Chobanoff’s group of staff members welcomed extra volunteers to ensure things ran smoothly. This year, Chobanoff partnered with Keystone Cornhole ACL to

Maybe it was a way to conquer a new frontier. Maybe it was the desire to defy gravity. Maybe it was a response to a need for faster transportation. But humans have always maintained a certain healthy fascination with flight. Not only is the Aviation Venture Crew continuing to explore aspects of flight, but it’s also

seeking to promote them.

“It’s like a freedom thing,” said Doug Eadline, a co-adviser of the Aviation Venture Crew, as well as a licensed pilot and a ground maintenance supervisor at Chester County Airport. “When you’re up in the air, you feel like you can do anything and go anywhere.”

Scouts to dish up breakfast

Scouts BSA Troop 33 will host a pancake breakfast fundraiser at East Petersburg Church, 6279 Main St., East Petersburg, on Saturday, April 20. The menu will include pancakes, sausage, orange juice, coffee and tea. Breakfast will be served for a set cost per person from 7 to 11 a.m., and children under age 2 may dine for free.

Tickets will be available at the door, and presale tickets will be available to purchase at a discounted price from members of the Scout troop. Additionally, on Saturday, April 13, Scouts will go door to door in the community from 12:30 to 3 p.m. selling discounted tickets. Breakfast proceeds will support Scouting activities.

Scouts are looking forward to Troop 33’s pancake breakfast.

Navy helicopter fly-over planned

The Hempfield track and field team will host Day With the AIRLANT, a VX-1 Navy helicopter fly-over and community event, on Saturday, April 13, at the high school, 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville. The event will be held at the practice field by the Performing Arts Center.

The fly-over will take place at 9:25 a.m., and attendees may visit the aircraft from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Community members may meet sailors from the VX-1 and tour a static display of

Grace Notes will play an arrangement of songs by famous singers such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Doris Day and Judy Garland. The band will play several hits from the singers’ era, including “My Way,” “That’s Amore,” “Chances Are” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

The members of Graces Notes will be accompanied by Wayside music director Janelle Pabon, Michael McDonald, Chris Rowels and Carly Knapp, who will support the band as vocalists. The concert will also feature pianist Charlie Postas, upright bassist Ed Kennell and guitarists David Brennen and Rick Ippolito.

“We’re encouraging people to come out and have a swell time,” said Grace Notes’ drummer, Pat Karkostski, who also leads the worship and music team at Wayside. “Come out and have

Members of the band will embrace the theme of this year’s concert by donning tuxedos, long gowns and other formal attire while they revisit the iconic music of ‘40s and ‘50s. Although it is a black-tie affair for the band, audience members may dress as formally or as casually as they prefer.

This is the eighth event in a series of special concerts held by Graces Notes, which typically performs every Sunday during Wayside’s con-

temporary worship service at 12:30 p.m. The band performs a themed concert every spring and autumn at the church; previous years’ concert themes include the music of the Beatles and songs to honor veterans of the armed forces. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Graces Notes performed anthemic songs by Journey and other popular bands, which Wayside livestreamed for people to watch at home.

“It’s a highly interactive concert. Our musicians have good charisma and excellent talent,” said Steve Fritz,

pastor at Wayside. “I’ve heard them practice for the upcoming show, and they are sensational.”

In addition to the spring and autumn concerts, Grace Notes participates in Waystock, an outdoor summer concert held at Wayside every June. The event doubles as a fundraiser for the Hempfield Area Food Pantry, and attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods to donate to the organization.

Youth event to focus on outdoor activities

Lancaster County Sportsmen for Youth will host the 29th annual Youth Field Day on Saturday, June 1, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Southern Lancaster County Farmer-Sportsmen’s Association, 742 Hollow Road, New Providence.

The event offers kids ages 10 to 15 opportunities to engage in outdoor activities. During the event, activities will include archery, canoeing, fish/fly fishing, muzzleloading, .22 rifle, trapping, trap shooting, turkey, and waterfowlers. The Pennsylvania Game Commission will give a presentation.

This event is free and includes a free lunch. All equipment will be provided, and attendees do not need to bring any gear. Parents may accompany their children if they wish.

Aviation Venture

drop-in on Saturday, April 20, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Smoketown Airport, 311 Airport Drive, Smoketown. The event will serve as an opportunity to meet current members, hear about some of the activities that the Aviation Venture Crew engages in, and generally learn what the crew is all about.

There will be an airplane to explore, as well as a flight simulator.

The open house is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.

“The atmosphere should be pretty light,” said Eadline. “We’re trying to attract new youth to the organization. We’re kind of unique to Lancaster County. A Venture Crew that’s specifically focused on aviation is pretty rare. We’re the only one in the county.”

Chartered by New Holland American Legion Post 662, the Aviation Venture Crew meets every other Sunday in Smoketown Airport’s community room. The next meeting is scheduled for April 14

“We take a wide view of aviation, including planes and flight,” said co-adviser Beth Katz. “But we also consider airport operations, weather, astronomy, navigation and trip planning. We have visited the Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport, but we have also visited Coatesville Airport and Lancaster Airport to see their operations and some of the planes housed there.”

The Aviation Venture Crew was founded in 2012 and currently has five members, who are males and females ages 14 to 21 from Manheim, Lancaster city and Leola. More are always welcome.

“Most come from a Scouting background,” said Eadline, a New Holland resident. “We explore anything and everything related to aviation. For most of our members, it’s probably a hobby, but it could blossom into a career. If these kids are intent on going beyond Venture Crew, they can learn to fly.”

“When I started (flying), it was the excitement of being free. Now it’s a job. To me, it’s still neat to see the (planes) taking off,” said Eadline.
