EPC Golf Outing will benefit Good Samaritan Services
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Like golfers who win the Masters Tournament and the green jackets tailored for them, Good Samaritan Services (Good Sam) and Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) are ideally suited for one another.
The two community-minded organizations are once again linking up for the 18th annual EPC Golf Outing benefiting Good Samaritan Services.
The charity event will be held Friday, June 6, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. There will be two sessions of golf. The first will tee off at 7:30 a.m., and the second will start at 1:30 p.m. A light breakfast and a chicken barbecue lunch will be served to the morning groups; the afternoon groups will receive a light café lunch and a chicken barbecue meal for dinner. The deadline to register is Friday, May 23. Go to https://epcgolf outing.com for more information and to register.
Individuals or businesses that wish to sponsor the event or provide prizes can visit the aforementioned website or email EPC marketing and communications director Dan Silva at marketing @engleonline.com.
“We want to be involved with the communities we serve,” said Jocelyn Engle, who is EPC’s publisher. “We know that some people just need an extra boost in times of need, and this was a perfect fit for us.”
Rachel Shelley, the director of marketing for Good Samaritan Services, agrees. “We love our

They don’t wear uniforms or dribble a ball, but National History Day participants from Centerville Middle School (CMS) are the embodiment of what it means to make a successful team.
Two CMS teams finished in the top three in their category at the local level to advance to the state competition, which will be held Saturday, April 12, and Sunday, April 13, at the
University of Scranton.
“They come together to create something that individually they might not have been able to,” CMS gifted support teacher Dan Snyderman said.
The region competition was held at Messiah University on March 1. “The easiest way to explain it is it’s a science fair, except it’s social studies,” Snyderman said. This year’s theme is “Rights and Responsibilities.” Students choose their project from the categories

partnership with EPC,” said Shelley. “Obviously, the funding that comes from the golf outing is helpful in supporting our mission (and) funding the work that we do in the community. Also, EPC is obviously so well-connected, and this is a great awareness-building event for us, too.”
Good Sam has locations across Lancaster and Chester counties and every day serves about 300 people who are in crisis.
“Our mission is to respond with compassion to individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of
homelessness,” Shelley said.
Anyone who needs assistance from Good Samaritan Services can go to https://goodsam services.org. A Good Sam representative will conduct a screening via a phone call to determine if the organization can help.
EPC is carrying on a family tradition started by company founder Alvin Engle, who was Jocelyn’s grandfather. Alvin was involved with numerous philanthropic endeavors and set the tone for the company going forward, Jocelyn said.

CELEBRATE HOLY WEEK
*Child care services are available for children aged five and under during all Holy Week services except for the 8:30 a.m. service.
In this service, we will commemorate the Last Supper and the events of Jesus’ last hours on earth, leading up to the crucifixion.
On Good Friday, Christian believers take time to remember the crucifixion. This service of readings and music will remind us of what Jesus endured on our behalf. 7:00 P.M.
Join us as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 8:30 A.M. 10:00 A.M.
Teamwork
of documentary, exhibit, paper, website, or performance and have a lot of leeway, provided their project fits the theme.
Eighth-graders Hannah Burk, Quinn Schonour, Ella Pfursich, and Diona Trinaku teamed to place second with their documentary, “Female Revolutionaries: How Women’s Rights and Responsibilities Changed Throughout the American Revolution.”
“Most people don’t compete for the school outside of sports,” Ella said. “This specific competition gave us a field to study we probably wouldn’t have been able to study otherwise, and it was interesting.”
Giuliana Houseman and Blake Neff, who are also eighth-graders, combined to finish third with their documentary, “Behind the Spotlight: The Untold Stories of Civil Rights Activists Who Fought With Little Remembrance.”
“I think it was a really great experience,” Giuliana said. “I definitely learned a lot more about history. It was fun getting to compete and watch other people’s documentaries to see how they interpreted the theme.”
Diona and Quinn agreed that the competition aspect was beneficial. “I think it is better learning in a more competitive environment,” Diona said. “It gives you a different perspective toward history. Instead of learning parts of a specific category, you’re learning the main part of one topic. You have a better understanding (because) it’s something you decided to learn about instead of something the teacher wants you to learn about.”
Quinn added, “We had more motivation to be in-depth with our research and really understand our topic. We were interviewed for the competition, so we really had to know our information. It definitely enabled us to learn more.”
Students were given the option of competing either individually or as part of a group. The CMS pupils are happy they teamed with their classmates. “I enjoy learning in a group because it gives us different views and something you might not have thought of before,” Hannah said.

Diona said, “Working in a group takes off a lot of pressure because if I was doing this competition by myself, I know that I would feel lots more pressure. This way, you have people helping you, and it’s easier.”
“It’s a great opportunity to learn more about something in history,” Giuliana said. “It’s a great time to build groups and combine knowledge and abilities you have
and create something great.”
It is also a chance to learn new things.
“The process of creating and curating this project had us utilizing different skills. I had never cited things before, which I know is a big part of high school and college,” Ella said. “It gave us practice in doing that.”
Quinn is the editor of her team’s documentary. “I had never done something like this before. It was nice to learn how to do something new.”
Snyderman said the independent, student-driven nature of the competition encourages students to buy in to their projects. “There are not a lot of opportunities for the kids to compete in things that are not sports-related,” he said. “What’s great about the competition is it’s academic-based, but also that they can choose their topic.”
The students aren’t the only ones who enjoy the experience. Snyderman and CMS advanced American history teachers Andrew Macik and Laurel Hill are proud of their students.
“Teachers get really excited
about it,” Snyderman said. “It’s fun for us to see the kids compete. It’s fun for us to see them really excited about it. It’s fun for us to be able to showcase the talents we have here at CMS at the state level.”
Giuliana said she enjoyed making the trip to the region competition with her friends and literally getting a taste of a college environment at the dining hall’s ice cream bar.
“This was fun,” Hannah said. “These are all my friends. We created our own groups, and it was so enjoyable. Sometimes, work is hard, but it’s better working with all these guys who are amazing.”
The national competition will be held Sunday, June 8, to Thursday, June 12 at the University of Maryland in College Park.
“It would be amazing to make it to nationals,” Blake said. “Even if we don’t, it’s an honor to be able to say, ‘I worked so hard on a five- to six-month project.’ Even if we hadn’t made it to states, (it would be nice) to say, ‘I took on that challenge.’ It is a really cool thing.”

outing has generated nearly $300,000 for neighbors in need. “We want to make the experience memorable for golfers and also make sure community members are aware of what Good Sam does,” Jocelyn said. “We want to (send the message) that everyone is included. We want to make sure (the golf outing is) affordable for everybody to take part. … I think what’s so neat about our event is we’ve had so many returning sponsors and golfers because it is something people look forward to every year.”
Many of Good Sam’s 30 staff members will volunteer at the golf event. “Our staff loves coming to the golf outing,” Shelley said. “It’s such a cool day for our staff. A lot of them are working directly with the people we serve every day providing case management, and it’s a heavy job. It’s important, important work. It’s really important for our staff to come on the day of the golf outing and see the community support for the work that they’re doing.”
Good Samaritan Services executive director Nate Hoffer will attend the outing. “His true passion for what he and his team members do has been fun for us to watch as an organization, because we know everyone is being taken care of by Good Sam,” said Jocelyn.
Only 3% of Good Samaritan Services’ budget is funded by the government. “People have been generous and kind in supporting and believing in the work we do,” said Shelley.
Good Sam will be expanding its impact with two homes in Phoenixville. It will be the first time Good Sam will offer housing for women in Phoenixville. The homes will continue to provide safe housing for women facing homelessness, with the added resources of Good Sam.
Shelley stated Good Sam takes an

individualized approach to caring for clients. “Everyone in crisis has their own individual story,” she said. “They are on a unique path on how they are going to reach stability.”
Clients meet one-on-one with a resource coordinator, who provides case management with “bite-size goals” for them to work on, Shelley said. She added Good Sam team members “take this large problem of crisis and break it into sizable goals while walking alongside them in that journey and equipping them with tools.”
There are no quick fixes. The goal is to remove any barriers that might be in the way of clients achieving longterm housing stability.
Courtney and her 3-year-old daughter, Cherish, were the first family to move into Good Samaritan Services’ Lancaster city residence for women and children, which opened last year.
“Good Sam Services has gone out of their way to make sure I have everything I need and more,”
Courtney said. “The opportunities I’ve received are truly a blessing. They helped keep me going when I could have quit, and I’m so grateful for their support. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I can breathe.”

Lancaster COB sets flashlight Easter egg hunt
Children and families are invited to the Lancaster Church of the Brethren (COB) on Palm Sunday, April 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for an indoor Easter egg hunt by flashlight. The church is located at 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster.
The festivities will begin in the church’s Worship and Event Center, where children will make story stones to share the story of Easter. Kids and families will be invited to draw a simple symbol on small stones depicting the events of Holy Week. Each child will receive a fabric bag to personalize and use to hold the stones, along with a handout showing the symbols and corresponding Scripture verses to retell the story.
As the sun sets, children will move to the sanctuary to hunt for candy-filled plastic Easter eggs by flashlight. The egg hunt is for children age 3 through fifth grade and will begin with the youngest participants. Participants are asked to bring a flashlight and
Easter basket or bag for each child.
Each child also will receive a ticket for a chance to win one of five Easter baskets filled with prizes. For more information, contact director of children’s ministries Linda Byers at lindab@lancob.org.

Older Scouts will be stationed at the entrance of the fire company parking lot to accept donations.
“The boys learn to work as a team,” Eric said. “They can earn money for their Scout accounts, which they can use to pay for trips and camping supplies. They learn how to talk to adults. They learn how to count money.”
Proceeds from the food sales

Eric said some of the money raised will go toward community meals the Scouts serve once or twice a year at their charter church, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, which provides a free, semimonthly meal for members of the community who
