Putting for Miracles will return to Leisure Lanes

OnSaturday, May 20, the Putting for Miracles charity mini golf tournament will return to Leisure Lanes, 3440 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., f ollowed by a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m. The tournament will incorporate two courses and have a set cost per player, with a maximum of four players per team. In addition to the tournament, the event will include a silent auction, local vendors, and food trucks.

The silent auction will begin once registration opens at 9 a.m. Attendees will be able to bid on a variety of items donated by local businesses, including gift baskets and gift cards. Several vendors participating in the event have also donated items that may be bid on during the auction, and buyers will be able to collect their purchases during the closing ceremony of the tournament.

A piece of home

On Feb. 27, Radwa Matar of Millersville officially opened the doors to Koshary Station, located at 4 S. Prince St., Millersville. The restaurant serves traditional dishes from Matar’s native country of Egypt and marks the beginning of a new chapter in her career in the food industry.

The restaurant’s main dish is koshary, a popular Middle Eastern street food that consists of pasta, rice, lentils, chickpeas, spiced tomato sauce and caramelized onions. Matar had tossed around the idea of starting her own restaurant and serving traditional cuisine from her home country since she first came to Lancaster in 2006. She gained experience while working in See Egyptian restaurant pg 3

Over 20 vendors and nonprofits will be set up at Leisure Lanes during the event, including Texas Roadhouse of Lancaster, Blankets of Honor, local crafters and stands that will sell baked goods. Participants will also have the option to purchase goods from five food trucks: Black Diamond Café, Apple Crate, Big Bark Chew BBQ, Dough & Arrows and Krazy Kones. Putting fo r Miracles is still accepting vendors, and the deadline to register as a vendor is Saturday, May 6. For more information, contact puttingformiracles@gmail.com.

The first Putting for Miracles tournament was held in August 2022 and was organized by Dave Chobanoff. For many years, Chobanoff has participated in multiple programs though the Children’s Miracle Network to raise money for children’s hospitals. He began exploring different ways that he could fundraise for the cause, which led to the organization of the

mini golf event. The tournament attracted dozens of sponsors and over 60 players and raised more than $5,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network. Attendees were paid a visit by Warrior Gannon and his family, who shared their experience with receiving critical care through the network.

Chobanoff knew when he organized the first event that he wanted it to become a yearly tradition and grow in size and scope this year. “It’s shaping up to be much larger this year. We’re already exceeding many of our expectations,” Chobanoff said. “It was still successful last year; even if I had only raised 100 bucks, it would have been worth it.” Chobanoff also noted that many players from last year have already signed up to participate again, and he has incorporated feedback from the players to apply to the second tournament.

The house that Poppy built

Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation announced on March 7 that Poppy, a rescued groundhog and animal ambassador for the organization, had passed away. Acorn Acres will host a memorial for Poppy on Saturday, April 1, at Jack’s Family Tavern & Restaurant, 15 S. Prince St., Millersville. The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. and will include light refreshments, children’s activities, cornhole and a silent auction. Although the event will be free, Acorn Acres asks attendees to consider making a donation, which will fund the groundhog caging at its facility.

Upon receiving the news of Poppy’s passing, several members of the community reached out to Acorn Acres’ founder, Betsy Shenk, to ask her if she would host a memorial. Shenk had originally planned to hold a baby shower-like event on April 1 to collect supplies for the rehab, as most wild animals begin raising their offspring during this time of year. April 1 would have been Poppy’s fourth birthday, so Shenk decided to transform the event into a way to honor her memory and to provide the community with a way to benefit the other groundhogs at Acorn Acres. Acorn Acres will erect housing for its groundhogs with a plaque that reads “The House That Poppy Built.” “It’s a way for us to remember her and to celebrate the incredible life of a little groundhog,” Shenk said. “This way, every little groundhog that goes through that house will benefit from Poppy.”

Poppy came into Shenk’s care in May 2019, after she was found without a mother by a resident of Conestoga. The rehab that initially took Poppy in was having difficulty getting her to eat and transferred her to Shenk’s care, as Shenk specializes in rehabilitating rodents. Soon after, Shenk realized that the issue was caused by a malocclusion, a birth defect resulting in crooked teeth. Since groundhogs’ teeth grow perpetually and rely on the animal wearing them down, rodents with malocclusion that are unable to manage the length of their teeth are at risk of fatal health problems. Shenk only had three options: to euthanize Poppy, put her under anesthesia and trim her teeth every 10 days or remove her teeth altogether. Shenk decided to remove Poppy’s teeth and train her as an animal ambassador, as she was unable to be released back into the wild.

on groundhogs and the important roles they play in the ecosystem. Shenk estimated that Poppy helped to educate nearly 12,000 people during her time as an ambassador.

“I think one of the biggest things she did was make people smile during a difficult time,” Shenk said. “I would see people looking at this beautiful little creature and smiling behind their masks. As much as this is going to tear our hearts out, I think the community needs this opportunity to grieve and celebrate her.”

of whom still live there. She also noticed that few, if any, restaurants in the area offer specifically Egyptian food. Matar still visits her family in Egypt every two years, and regular video calls with family members allow her to stay connected with them, but being able to offer a part of her

Matar’s husband, Mohamed Ibrahim, came to the United States in 2000 and found work as a machine operator for Kellogg’s. He returned to Egypt, where he and Matar were married, and the couple moved to Lancaster together. Matar and Ibrahim moved to Millersville three years ago. Matar finally decided to realize her dream of opening a restaurant after leaving her position in a school cafeteria last year. “It’s been my plan for a while,” Matar said. “I was looking for the right place for a restaurant. It was a gift to find something so close to where I live.”

Although the task of starting one’s own business is daunting, Matar said that she is confident that she has the skills she needs to ensure Koshary Station’s success. In addition to working in restaurants and cafeterias, Matar used to participate in Taste of the World in Lancaster city, where she and other Middle Eastern women would gather to prepare and serve dishes from their native countries.

“I gained so much experience in

the industry. You get to know how a business is run and how to work with food,” said Matar. “I used to serve over 300 children a day when I worked in a cafeteria and learned so much about serving people.”

Matar noted that she was only able to open Koshary Station with the help and support of those in her life. Although Ibrahim works full time, he often steps in to help with the business. When Matar first started to plan for her business, she was encouraged by her friends Zaenab, Riham and Marwa, who helped with organization, prepping the food and lending her their cars to move into the new building. Matar added that she is also grateful for the support provided by her friends Mohamed, Yasser, Tamer, Bouchra and Nisreen. “Without my friends, I couldn’t have done it. I’m so blessed to have them,” Matar said. Despite the difficulty of starting a business from scratch, Matar is confident that she will build on her experience as a new business owner.

Sports Hall of Fame event will honor local athletes

Lancaster and York counties have no shortage of talented athletes, and six of them will be inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in April. The Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will hold its 44th Awards Night and Dinner on Saturday, April 29, at the Bachman Center, located on the campus of Homestead Village, 633 Community Way, Lancaster. The event will begin with a social hour at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m.

This year’s inductees are Michael Burke IV, Ben Guiles, Thomas Haines, John Little, Michael Terwilliger and Betty Bare Windstein. “We have about 200 members in the Susquehanna Chapter, and each member gets a ballot and votes for six nominees,” explained Michael Gerfin, president of the chapter. “We had 10 people nominated this year. The top six are inducted each year.” He noted that this year’s class will include the 300th inductee in the Susquehanna Valley Chapter.

Each inductee will receive a plaque commemorating his or her induction. This year’s program is dedicated to Charles “Rich” Gerfin, longtime treasurer, who passed away in 2022. In addition to the six inductee awards, other awards will be presented at the event - the Jimmy Sheckard Meritorious Service Award and the William Mable Most Courageous Athlete Award.

Burke, who was a football star at Columbia High School, was a multisport athlete, playing on the baseball, track and basketball teams as well. During Burke’s senior year in 2011, Columbia won the District III championship. He went on to play football for Villanova University.

Guiles, a football player and graduate of Columbia High School, led the Lancaster-Lebanon League in rushing with 1,665 yards in 2002. At Lebanon Valley College, he became the school’s all-time leading rusher, and during his senior year, he earned an honorable mention as a District III All-American.

Haines wrestled for Solanco High School from 2010 through 2014. He was a four-time section champion and a four-time Lancaster-Lebanon League champion and won four PIAA AAA state championships. He also wrestled for The Ohio State University and Lock Haven University, and he is currently the assistant wrestling coach at Elizabethtown College.

Little was also a wrestler for Solanco High School, winning District III and regional championships in 1974. At Millersville State College, he became a two-time Division III All-American wrestler. He spent 36 years as head

wrestling coach at Solanco, retiring in 2018.

Terwilliger was a multi-sport athlete for Cocalico High School, playing on the 1974 Lancaster-Lebanon

And Bingo was his name-o!

Lori Breece, manager with United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dogs, remembers the successful bingo event the organization held in 2019. “At that time that was our largest fundraiser to date,” said Breece, who noted that the event garnered funds to help raise the 16 puppies that are trained yearly to become service dogs. The average cost of the first year of training one dog is $3,000.

The UDS bingo fundraiser will return to the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, April 16. Doors will open at noon, and the first game will start at 1:30 p.m. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, will be discounted through Friday, April 14. Each ticket includes 20 games. Players must be age 18 or older, and tickets are limited. Food and beverage items will be available for purchase.

Breece noted that the UDS fundraiser is a little different from

some other bingo events. “We allow people to pick their own prizes, and I think that kind of sets us apart,” she said, noting that the option started years ago. “So if somebody wins and they want that Kate Spade bag, they can get it,” she shared. “That has been well received.”

Breece, administrative assistant Jennifer King, and other staff members, have been gathering prizes for the event, focusing on experiences.

Breece described a tasting tour at Allegro Winery that includes cheese, crackers, a souvenir glass, and a free bottle of wine. “We have a 50minute traditional massage and lunch in the Oasis at the Spa at The Hotel Hershey,” said Breece. Another prize will be an experience for six at The Brewery of Hershey, which includes a guided tour of production operations and concludes with a tasting of products paired with local cheese, chocolates, and dried fruit.

Four tickets to Hershey Gardens will be among the prizes, and organizers are working on putting together an

overnight trip to Baltimore with National Aquarium tickets. Breece also hopes to have a Gettysburg excursion to give away, and King noted that Longwood Gardens tickets and sports memorabilia items associated with the 76ers, Flyers, Steelers, and Eagles are being gathered. Door prizes, special games with cash prizes, and other giveaways will be included at the event.

UDS service dogs are perhaps best known for helping individuals with mobility issues or autism. These dogs train for more than two years before they are partnered with an individual for whom they may open and close doors, retrieve objects, and more. Charlie, the black Labrador puppy that posed cooperatively with bingo cards for this article, began his training at 11 weeks. “Normally puppies start our program at

8 weeks,” said Breece, who noted that in spite of starting a little late, the pup is doing well. “(Charlie) has been a shining star,” she stated. Readers who would like tickets may email karens@udservices.org or call 717-397-1841. Organizations, businesses, and individuals wishing to help sponsor a puppy may email lorig@udservices.org or call 717-715-8753.

Holy Week events set

Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will host two special events during Holy Week. The community is invited to attend.

The church will host its love feast and Communion service on Maundy Thursday, April 6, at 6:30 p.m. in its Family Life Center. The event is patterned after Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples.

Pastors and lay leaders will offer reflections and guide the congregation through the service. The love feast will include congregational singing, interpretation for Spanish speakers, and footwashing, with handwashing as an alternative. Men and women will be seated separately, with footwashing taking place around tables. After a simple meal, pastor Jamie Nace will lead the children in an age-appropriate activity. The event will also include Communion.

An outdoor family Easter scavenger hunt will take place on Saturday, April 8. Participants may check in at the welcome table from 9 to 11 a.m. to receive their checklist and

instructions. Children and families will then walk the church grounds at their own pace in search of Easter egg-shaped posters, where treats and fun activities related to the Easter story await. In the case of rain, the church will offer a modified, indoor version of the hunt.

For more information, contact Nace at pastorjamien@lancob.org.

Children’s book teaches about talking to God

“When we include God in our day, God shows us amazing things,” said author Krista Snyder. Krista, who lives in Elizabethtown, has published a book with this message. “Basil’s Blessings: My Special Day

With God” is geared toward children ages 4 to 7. It tells the story of Basil, a little inchworm, and the adventures he encounters with a bluebird named BB.

Although the book was published in December 2021, the story was much longer in the making, Krista

said. “This was a 20-year project for me,” she remarked. “When God wants something to happen, He makes it happen in His time.”

Krista’s original story wasn’t religious, although it was full of positive messages. Over the years, she kept coming back to the draft, tweaking and changing it. Teaching 4-yearolds at her church, St. Peter Catholic Church in Elizabethtown, helped Krista change the scope of her story. “God helped me to develop this story,” she stated. “Everything in my story, God helped me to write.”

During the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, Krista reached out to Caracyn Publishing, a Grantvillebased publisher, about her story. The finished product, illustrated by Nancy Landis, is a book that features multiple themes. “One of the themes is from 1 Thessalonians 5:17, ‘pray without ceasing,’” said Krista, who works as a purchasing agent for G.E. Richards Graphic Supplies in Landisville. “My job is stressful, and I pray my way through my day. My book shows kids how easy it is in

every moment of the day to talk to God. My inchworm talks to God and includes God in his day.”

Another theme in the book comes from Isaiah 6:3, “The whole earth is full of His glory,” and the book also stresses the importance of loving your enemies and talking to others about God. The story also teaches a lesson about the power of God. “Who would think a bluebird and an inchworm would become friends?” Krista said. “But with God, anything is possible.”

Krista included three songs she wrote the lyrics for in the book as well as activity pages and facts about inchworms and dandelions. On her website, www.kristasnyder books.com, readers may download several lesson plans she wrote that are connected to the book as well.

When she’s not writing, Krista enjoys spending time with her husband, Mike, and their dog, Buffy. A portion of the proceeds of each book sold will benefit Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown-based organization that supports adoption of

Krista said she has ideas for more books, and she’d love to turn Basil’s story into a series. She hopes that anyone who picks up “Basil’s Blessings” will read it and come away with a renewed relationship with God. “I truly believe if a child learns to talk to God when he or she is young, they will turn into an amazing individual when they grow up,” she said.
