A
SWAN is an organization based in Lancaster that provides free music lessons, ensemble training, performance opportunities, and mentoring from local music teachers to children and youths ages 6 to 17 located in the Lancaster and Red Lion areas. Wanda contacted SWAN and asked for someone to evaluate Logan. “I explained that he had no formal training, and when they heard him play, their eyebrows went up,” explained Wanda. Since April 2021, Logan has been taking piano lessons via Zoom, and Bryan, the boys’ father, purchased Logan a new piano right before Christmas last year. According to Wanda, SWAN believes in Logan’s abilities so
much that the organization began sending an instructor to their house to provide a one-hour lesson each week in addition to Logan’s online instruction. The first time Logan performed for an audience was August 2021 outside of the Ware Center in Lancaster. The entire McCaskey football and cheerleading teams were walking by at the time, and the group stopped to listen when Logan started to perform. As soon as Logan played his last note, the teams cheered loudly. “I teared up,” commented Wanda. “For us, that was a turning point. I think it was at that moment he realized he’s doing something most people can’t do and it’s appreciated.” See Logan Wells pg 7

n important lesson everyone should be taught is not to judge books by their covers. We will never know people’s life stories based solely on their appearances. Logan Wells is anything but a typical third-grader. His grandmother, Wanda, is his guardian and his brother, Alex, is on the autism spectrum and has attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD). While Logan goes to Mountville Elementary School, Alex stays home and attends cyber school. In spite of the obstacles that have come their way, both boys are straight-A students and have an interest in the arts. For Alex, he enjoys drawing,
while Logan plays the piano. However, it was Alex who had a piano on his Christmas list two years ago. Wanda bought him a toy piano with prerecorded music from Walmart, and after playing with it for a few months, Alex set it aside. One day, when Wanda was in the kitchen, she heard music coming from the piano, but it wasn’t prerecorded. It was live. When she came into the living room, she discovered that Logan was playing a tune he had heard from memory. Wanda knew Logan had something special, so she searched for an organization that provided affordable piano lessons. Then she discovered Scaling Walls a Note at a Time (SWAN).

A baby has brittle bone disease. Two people have been diagnosed with brain tumors. Another man, who is just 39 years old, has ALS. These are some of the people who will benefit from the support of Lancaster County Field of Hope this year. The Columbia-based organization helps people in Lancaster County who are facing health hardships, and you can be a part of this mission by attending Hope@22, a fundraiser for the organization. Hope@22 will be held on Saturday, April 2, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Garth gallery, 22 S. Second St., Columbia. The event - named for the address of the gallery will feature a silent auction, giveaways, beer from Pour Man’s Brewing, wine and lite fare. Josh Wolpert will provide live entertainment.

Spanish Writing Contest Announced

The Latin American Alliance has announced its annual Spanish Literature Contest, which will have the theme “The Family.” The contest, which accepts poetry and short stories, is open to all students of the Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 area studying the Spanish language, including students in middle school, high school, a college or university, or a trade school. With the desire to encourage and stimulate the learning, use, and mastery of the Spanish language, the Latin American Alliance organizes the contest each spring. The theme of “The Family” reflects an important dynamic within the Hispanic culture. The submitted works will be judged on their originality, creativity, and literary quality, along with correct usage of grammar, verb tenses, extent of vocabulary, and creativity of expression and presentation. After review by the judges, who

items and a cookbook signed by chef Chris Santos, wine donated by Deerfoot Winery and a planter from Perfect Pots. “This year, we are offering online bidding as well as in-person,” Heth stated. “We’ll be posting items online, so people from out of state or anyone who can’t come to the event can bid.” Heth remarked that Garth provides a unique space for the event. “It’s an art gallery, so there are all kinds of neat things to look at while you’re there,” she said. She also noted that the 2022 recipients of Field of Hope’s support are invited to attend Hope@22 as the organization’s guests and will be introduced at the event. Applicants are evaluated individually when determining who will receive financial support each year, she said. Since its inception, Field of Hope has helped 26 recipients, giving away just shy of $235,000. In the past, the auction has raised $6,000, and Heth said she’s hoping this year will match or surpass that amount. Tickets are not required to attend Hope@22, but a door donation is requested. Heth noted that the event will take place on the second floor of the gallery, so stairs are used to access the space. “Come out and enjoy an evening of giving to others and supporting those who are going through a rough time,” she commented. “Come out and meet some new people. It’s a relaxing evening, although the bidding does get a little competitive. It’s been two years since Field of Hope has been able to hold its auction, said Carol Heth, who founded the organization in 2016. Garth donates the space for the evening, and a wide variety of items will be up for grabs. Prizes include a staycation at the Heths’ Columbia 6-acre property, which is an Airbnb. “The mission (of Remember America) is to remind Americans of their unique heritage of liberty that was founded upon biblical principles,” said Dayspring Christian Academy events manager Lisa Becker. “Our hearts first need to be turned to the Lord, and that personal revival extends from us to our family to our community to our state to our nation.” The 2022 Remember America Speaker Series will feature Turning Point USA president and founder Charlie Kirk as the keynote speaker. This year’s presentation, which will include chorale performances and an orator, will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 23. The dinner will be served at 6 p.m. The keynote speech, which will begin at 7:15 p.m., will be followed by a brief question and answer period. Kirk, an activist and radio show host, founded Turning Point USA with Bill Montgomery in 2012, and he currently serves as CEO of Turning Point Action and Turning Point Faith. Turning Point USA is a nonprofit organization with chapters promoting conservative values on high school, college, and university campuses. Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone said that organizers have been hoping to have Kirk participate in Remember America. “As I was praying through our short list (of speakers) … I felt education is prominent in people’s thinking right now,” said Stone. “It’s a great time to highlight
how education is such an important part of what our country is going through.” Stone noted that it seemed natural to choose Kirk to speak on the importance of education in restoring the country to biblical values. The theme of this year’s event is “Faith. Courage. Liberty.” “It starts with faith (because) in today’s world, Christians are being put in a position where they will choose to be courageous or not,” said Stone. We are calling people to choose courage, and liberty will be the result.” Becker agreed, noting that the theme reflects the study of the country’s foundation, which is at the heart of Remember America. “We are reminding people (that) the founding documents of our nation and the writings of our founders … (had) a biblical world view,” said Becker. She also noted that the faith of the founders was applied to the building of the nation. “When you look at some of our founders and what they have written, you understand these were men of faith who were willing to stand and sacrifice,” she said. “Their faith inspired their courage, and what they endured established liberty like nothing else the world had ever seen.” Three types of tickets are available for the event. The Pennsylvania Dutch Council of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) will host a Community Breakfast Hike on Saturday, April 2. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Families are invited to enjoy a complimentary “Backyard Wildlife” program at the Environmental Center and breakfast items with local Scout packs and troops. Interested families can then take a short walk on the Scout Trail and enjoy the other recreational facilities the park has to offer.
