The Mountville Lions Club will host a chicken potpie supper on Saturday, March 18, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. Main St., Mountville. Takeout meals will be available to purchase at a set price from 10 a.m. until supplies run out.
Members of the Lions Club make each meal from scratch, using over 400 pounds of chicken, 200 pounds of potatoes, 200 pounds of flour

Manor
Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster, will host a benefit auction on Saturday, March 25, at 9 a.m. The proceeds from the auction will benefit the church’s youth programs and mission trips, which include students from the Penn Manor, Hempfield and Columbia areas.
All items that will be sold at the auction are being donated from members of the congregation as well as local residents and businesses. Available items will include gift cards, tickets to sporting events, gift baskets, handmade goods and vouchers for services provided by local residents. Food and beverages will also be available to purchase at the auction, and the proceeds from food sales will also support the church’s youth programs. Breakfast foods will be served during the morning hours of the event, and lunch items will be sold in the afternoon, until the
In July, students in Manor Church’s youth program will embark on a mission trip to Waldorf, Md. The students will assist the community in Waldorf by leading bible studies, repairing homes and churches and distributing goods at local food banks.
“These trips are opportunities to give students a greater understanding of what it means to follow Christ and serve others,” said Beau Walmer, student ministries director at Manor Church. “They also give students a chance to live out the church’s values and experience cultures around the world.”
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Manor Church’s youth group completed mission trips to serve communities in Puerto Rico. After taking a break from traveling over the course of the pandemic, the youth group visited Viper, Ky., last year. Students completed projects and assisted the residents of Viper, which is located in the rural
Appalachian region of the state. Walmer noted that each location for the trip is selected to give the students experience with working in different communities. Since the group visited a remote location like Viper last year, Walmer wanted to take the students to a town like Waldorf, which lies just outside of Washington D.C., “We’re always open to God’s leading and seeing where we feel we’re needed the most,” Walmer said.
In addition to the youth program’s mission trips, students also participate in various service projects in the local community. During Manor Serves, a weeklong service event hosted by the church, students helped with mulching and other yard work projects in the area. Every December, the youth group partners with another ministry called Connect to the Kingdom to make and distribute meals at Musser Park in Lancaster city. Several years ago, two local families donated a large amount of money to The Salvation Army. The organization decided to use the donation to create The Olga Ruth Stratton and Thomas E. Wolf Scholarship, which will benefit a select group of applicants from schools across the county.
The scholarship was created to assist students of low- to moderateincome households to receive a higher education, whether through earning a college degree or earning a trade. In order to be eligible to
receive the scholarship, students must be Lancaster County residents, demonstrate a need for financial assistance, have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher and be graduating seniors, among other requirements. Each student must submit a high school transcript, an academic recommendation letter, a community service-related recommendation letter and a one-page essay describing his or her career goals. For more information, visit www.salvationarmylancaster.org or contact 717-397-7565. The deadline to submit an application is Monday, March 20.

suppers serve as the Lions Club’s largest fundraiser throughout the year.
“It’s a Mountville tradition that people support because it’s not only for a good cause, but it’s a tasty meal at a reasonable price,” said Eric Weaver, a member of the Mountville Lions Club.
The Lions Club uses the money made from its fundraisers to support a variety of projects that benefit the local community. The organization’s community projects include funding scholarships for Hempfield High School students, maintaining the pavilion at the borough park, assisting the Columbia Food Bank and organizing the annual Easter Egg Roll. The Lions Club also supports Beacon Lodge, a nonprofit camp program that assists individuals with visual impairments or other disabilities.
The Lions Club also completes projects requested by members of the community.
Currently, the organization is installing a wheelchair ramp in a local resident’s home. Around Christmastime, the Lions Club works with the Mountville Fire Company to coordinate its Cookies with Santa event. The Lions Club is also currently completing a project to replace the benches at the parks and bus stops around Mountville.
“We try to do projects that are really close to the community,” Weaver said. “Knowing that we’re giving people here a place to sit down while they’re waiting for the bus or enjoying the park is a nice feeling.”
Weaver has been a member of the Lions Club for over 25 years, and the club itself has been assisting the community for generations. “There are kids today who attend our events that their parents and grandparents used to attend,” Weaver said.

Once students submit their applications and the necessary documents, The Salvation Army will review them and schedule an interview with the students who qualify at its location at 131 S. Queen St., Lancaster. During the interview, each student will describe his or her vision and career plan and detail what school and major he or she has in mind. The Salvation Army will provide assistance beyond the scholarship itself by helping the students to locate additional resources that will help with secondary education.
“ We believe in education and the next generation,” said Shady Boules, operations and development manager at The Salvation Army. “Going to college isn’t an easy decision to make and it’s not cheap. We believe that once students finish school and begin working, they will be in a position to give back to their communities.”
In previous years, The Salvation Army offered small scholarships to local students. The organization recently
welcomed aboard many new officers who have decided to make a more concerted effort to support students in the county. The Salvation Army’s goal is to continue to award the scholarship to 15 students in Lancaster County each year.
The Salvation Army offers various other programs to Lancaster County residents throughout the year. On Fridays, the organization distributes food to over 100 local families, providing them with a box of essentials such as bread, soup, sandwiches, rice and breakfast items. The Salvation Army also provides financial assistance to families that need help paying for rent and utilities. Through the nonprofit’s Pathway of Hope program, families can receive financial and life coaching resources through lessons that cover topics such as budgeting, applying to jobs and creating resumes.
“ We hope that one day, the people who we help will give back to the community when they can by assisting those in need,” Boules said.

We are fortunate to live in an area that has long been regarded as the “Garden Spot of America.” Generational farming is a part of the Lancaster County culture. In fact, we lead the nation in young farmers. According to the most recent Economic Impact study by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, 14% of farms in Pennsylvania had a young producer (defined as someone age 35 or younger) operating as the primary farmer. At last count, Lancaster County had 2,400 young producers, twice as much as the second-ranked county in the nation, LaGrange County, Ind. In addition, Lancaster County leads the nation in farmland preservation, with more than 113,000 acres preserved. As promising as that sounds for the future, we’re still losing more than 1,200 acres of Lancaster County farmland each year to development, according to the Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT), a nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving agriculture and stewarding the land in Lancaster County. For more information on LFT, visit https://lancasterfarm landtrust.org.
Farming can be a backbreaking, often undervalued vocation that doesn’t stop at 5 p.m. on Friday. Like we often do with first responders and the military, thank a farmer for his or her service to our community. Look at labels and buy locally. See where your milk, produce, and meat are coming from. When you shop at local supermarkets, if you don’t see local produce in season, ask why the store isn’t providing locally sourced foods. Encourage the store to offer
local produce so shoppers can easily support local farmers.
The Lancaster County landscape is dotted with roadside produce stands when crops are in season. Most of these stands and farmers markets won’t open until later in the spring or summer. Below is a list of some of the many locations where you can get fresh local produce, meats, and cheeses.

Farmers and growers face a significant threat in the years to come as industrial agriculture operations continue to expand. According to the National Resources Defense Council, industrial agriculture is the large-scale, intensive production of crops and animals. Such operations make it more
difficult for small farmers and growers to turn a profit, and they often involve the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The use of such products poses an additional threat to small farmers and growers, as the Union of Concerned Scientists notes that the heavy application of fertilizers and pesti-

How can a basketball team go on for more than five minutes without scoring a basket in the second half of a playoff game and yet manage to win the game?
What is the secret to that?
“That’s called ‘Defense,’ you have to lean on defense,” Danny
Walck, the Hempfield boys’ basketball coach, explained it plainly.
“Defense will get you through those situations.”
In the District Three Class 6A third-place consolation playoff at Landisville on Thursday, March 2, the Black Knights topped Waynesboro 53-41, improving their record to 21-3.
The Black Knights survived a
stretch where they only managed two free throws - going 2-for-6 actually - between the 4:04 mark of the third quarter up until junior forward Ben Troyer’s basket at the 6:45 mark of the fourth quarter. The Knights were leading 37-25 when they hit the dry spell. They came out of it in the lead 41-32 after Troyer’s basket.
“They were keeping it close,” Troyer said. “We wanted that home game so badly that we knew we needed to get something going.”
Troyer scored Hempfield’s first four baskets of the fourth period, including a steal and a dunk to give his team a 47-32 lead with only 3:39 left to play. He finished with nine points.
The home game he was referring to was Hempfield earning home-court advantage for the opening round of the PIAA 6A state playoffs.

The Witman Auctioneers Team Is Currently
Center tonight, but this is a big win for us in terms of states,” said Miguel Pena, who led all scorers with 23 points. Pena, who was recently named Lancaster-Lebanon League Section One Player of the Year (as voted on by league coaches) and made first team all-star, was referring to the district championship game which the Knights and the Waynesboro Indians (215) were denied by their respective semifinals round losses.
“These players are a pleasure to coach,” Walck said of his upperclassmen. “This is an experienced group and they’re still hungry; they want to play more basketball. They have great belief and trust in each other. That’s what you want for team chemistry.”
Hempfield picked up the momentum in the latter part of the first period, taking a 17-13 lead into the second stanza. Threepoint field goals by Pena and Michael Hester - the first of his two
treys in the period - helped the Knights take a 29-21 lead into intermission.
Pena nailed two more threepoint jumpers early in the second half.
“They kind of keyed in on the screening game,” Pena explained. “So, most of my shots came from me creating it. When we were spreading the floor, it was harder for them to guard us.”
The shots began going in for Hempfield in the fourth quarter, including Pena going 4-for-4 on foul shots down the stretch and Chase Calabretta (10 pts) also making two free throws.
Jaylon Bean led the Indians with 16 points while Ryan Shafferr scored 14.
“I’m really proud of the effort our team gave - the focus and the awareness to recognize what they were doing and being able to execute,” said Walck. “We gave ourselves a chance to win.
“I thought we rebounded the ball very well so as to not give their guys second chances,” he added. “They’re well-coached and are a very good rebounding team. One of their strongest assets on offense is their transition game. So, we were focused on taking care of the ball against this team. How do they get into transition? If we would turn the ball over.”
In addition to Pena’s selection as First Team all-star, Troyer, and 6-foot-5 senior forward Kamyn Lawrence made Second Team allstar. Calabretta and Hester received Honorable Mention.
SWIMMING
At the District Three Class 3A Swimming & Diving Championships, held at Cumberland Valley High School on Friday and Satur-
day, March 4-5, the foursome of Ryan Taylor, Toby Marco, Andrew Gates and Jack Root swam their way to the state championships by finishing eighth in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The quartet posted a time of 3:15.52, earning a spot at the PIAA 3A championships.
The girls’ 400 free relay team came up just short of qualifying for states. Anna Koger, Micah Wiglesworth, Lillian Farmer, and Carol Fabian’s eighth-place time of 3:40.30 missed the cut.
“The girls were one spot off,” Casey Lear, the Hempfield swim coach, said. “They were very close. It’s a shame.
“A lot of the races were close. It’s a super-fast district,” Lear added.
Taylor took 11th in the 50-yard freestyle while Root finished 14thonly .18 seconds behind Taylor (22.10 to 22.28).
“Ryan Taylor really stepped it up in districts as he has all year as a sophomore,” Lear said. “He has great potential. All four boys [400 free relay] are coming back next year.”
The Knights had two relay teams finish 10th for the boys. Root, Marco, Taylor and Jace Colino posted a combined time of 1:29.39 in the 200 free relay while Gates, Colino, Kiran George, and Will Russell swam the 200-medley relay at 1:41.7.
“Andrew Gates is a freshman backstroker,” Lear said. “He’s a talented kid. As he grows older and gets more confidence, he is going to be a pretty speedy kid.”
George also had a 14th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.
“Kiran dropped a little bit of time at the district meet,” Lear noted. “He holds down our breaststroke.”
The boys’ and girls’ teams scored nearly identical points. Hempfield’s boys finished 13th in the team standings with 62 points while 61 points earned the girls the 14th spot.
Wilson High School dominated as both boys (392 pts) and girls (372.50 pts) claimed the team championship.
Fabian teamed with Caroline Schweigert, Emily Taylor and Kendall Stringe for 12th place in the girls’ 200 medley relay (1:54.91). Wiglesworth, who earned 16th (25.48) in the 50 free, joined Koger, Taylor and Farmer for 11th place (1:41.75) in the 200 free relay.
“Lillian Farmer, as a senior, performed really well through the season, 200 back and freestyler,” said Lear. “She came in and did what she had to do in big meets.”
Farmer finished ninth in the 100 backstroke at 59.18 seconds while Fabian finished 15th (5:21.23) in the 500 free. Wiglesworth was 15th (58.34) in the 100 backstroke.
