Hempfield To Stage “Beauty And The Beast”

Hempfield High School students will present the Broadway version of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, March 6, 7, and 8, in the school’s Performing Arts Center (PAC), 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. on March 6 and 7, with matinees at 2:30 p.m. on March 7 and 8.

All seating is reserved, and separate costs have been set for adults and for children and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased at www.hempfieldsd.org/tickets or in person at the PAC box office beginning one hour prior to each showtime. Online ticket sales will close four hours before the start of each performance.

Additionally, a senior citizen preview performance is slated for Thursday, March 5, at 7 p.m. Admission will be open free of charge to all residents of Hempfield School District age 65 and older on a first-come, first-served basis. Cookies will be served at intermission.

Ethiopian Meal To Fund Equipment Purchase The purchase of a hematology analyzer, similar in function to the one shown with Siloam Ethiopia co-founder Wegayhu Ketema, is next on the list for the Lancaster County-based organization’s medical clinic in Ketema’s hometown of Harar, Ethiopia. A buffet meal of Ethiopian foods will be held on Saturday, Feb. 29, from 1 to 7 p.m. at Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster, 175 Church St., Landisville, to raise funds to buy the machine.

Takeouts will be available. Diners are welcome to drop in at any time during the event, but registration is requested for planning purposes.

Junior League of Lancaster will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with its 15th annual Run4Luck on Saturday, March 14, at Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster.

All runners and walkers are invited to participate. Local radio personality Holly Love will kick off the event with the Kids’ Fun Run at 9 a.m., which will be followed by the 4-mile run at 9:30 a.m., and the 2-mile walk at 9:40 a.m.

Early registration is available through Thursday, Feb. 27. Early registrants are guaranteed a discounted registration price, a long-sleeved performance shirt, and a race bag. Registration will remain open after Feb. 27 until race day at full price. There is a registration cost for the Kids’ Fun Run as well.

After the annual run and walk, participants are invited to enjoy post-race festivities, including an awards ceremony, music, and fun. Top male and female finishers in the 4-mile race will be awarded medals. Additional prizes will be awarded for the team with the most festive St. Patrick’s Day costumes.

Led by two-time Grammy-nominated trumpeter Horne, the band weaves the sound of New Orleans into a rich musical fabric that demonstrates the history of the trumpet and the story of jazz. Inspired by the music of King Oliver Creole Jazz Band, the Gotham Kings Mardi Gras Party encompasses rags, stomps, shouts, and funk. The band has played in venues including Caramoor Jazz Festival, Louis Armstrong House Museum, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Individually, members of the Gotham Kings have compiled a diverse resume of collaborations with artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Michael Feinstein, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga.

A dance benefit event has been organized to support the family of Cami Jo Combs, 20, and her daughter, Callie Jo Flowers, 2, who died after a fire at a row home in Columbia Borough on Jan. 4.

The event, “Support a Bond That Can’t Be Broken,” will take place on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 6 to 11 p.m. at Columbia VFW, 401 Manor St., Columbia. Open to adults age 21 and older only, the event will include food, music by disc jockey Stan D. Man, a silent auction, and giveaways.

Horne has subbed for and toured with Marsalis in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Count Basie Orchestra, Cab Calloway Orchestra, and others. He has performed in venues and festivals around the world.

Horne has also performed in several TonyAward winning Broadway shows, including “After Midnight” and “Shuffle Along.”

Horne can also be seen on CBS’ “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” and in the jazz biopic “Bolden.” He holds degrees from Florida State University and The Juilliard School.

It was a theme in other crucial matches over the weekend as Central Dauphin managed to outscore Hempfield. In all, the final standings among participating schools had the Rams at 263.5 team points to Hempfield’s 184 for second place.

Lampeter-Strasburg compiled 165.5 team points for third place while Penn Manor finished a close fourth at 161.5.

Edwards (106) earned an 11-4 victory in the fifth-place match, defeating Palmyra’s Spencer Whitney after having suffered a loss in the consolation semifinals to Austin Reiff of LampeterStrasburg.

Edwards was in control of the opening bout of the tournament, taking an 83 lead before registering a pin at the 1:44 mark. He worked another pin with only four seconds remaining in the second period of the quarterfinals before coming up short against eventual champ Matt Repos of Central Dauphin in the semifinals.

Hoover cruised to the semifinals, notching a pin 55 seconds into the opening match and a third-period pin in the quarterfinals. Yet another eventual champ from Central Dauphin spelled defeat over a Hempfield wrestler as Bryce Buckman doubled up Hoover 10-5 in the semis.

After Ron Fulton of Solanco earned enough steam to post a 5-4 win in the consolation semis, Hoover bounced back to pin Palmyra’s Jacob Myers 3:38 into the fifth-place match.

Sophomore Clay Gainer’s first-round bye in the 126-pound brackets was met with a loss via technical fall in the quarterfinal round thanks to eventual champ Josh Miller - also of Central Dauphin.

Miller won his next two matches on major decisions to claim the gold.

In the consis, Gainer earned a pin before suffering a 10-1 defeat at the hands of fourth-place finisher Trevor Grassel of Penn Manor.

Caleb Mussmon claimed fifth in the 285-pound class. His opening-round pin and subsequent 8-5 loss in the quarterfinals to Ben Weaver of Penn Manor forced the freshman into the consolations where he pinned Sam Crist of

“Gio Luciano lost a hard-fought battle in the finals,” Mack stated. “But he is closing the gap. He is excited to make his first trip to the district tournament.”

Luciano was a 6-2 winner in the semis, topping Solanco’s Weston Bare.

In the tournament, Luciano came on to post a pin in the quarterfinals after having earned a bye in the first round.

Also making it to the championship bout was Hempfield sophomore Reagan Lefevre, who suffered a heartbreaking 43 loss to Central Dauphin’s Tyler Faust in the quest for the 132-pound crown.

“Reagan faced a tough opponent in the finals,” said Mack. “He lost a close match. With a few adjustments, he’ll be ready to make a run at the district tournament - second trip to districts for him.”

Following an opening-round bye, Lefevre pinned 1:10 into his quarterfinal bout and posted a 71 victory over Solanco’s Joey Vandegriff in the semis. Faust, meanwhile, won a 9-3 decision in his semifinal match.

Volunteers at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia, will be hard at work in the kitchen in the coming weeks as the church’s 96th annual Fastnacht Bake commences. Fastnachts were traditionally made on Shrove Tuesday as a way to use up all of the fats in the kitchen before Lent, which runs from Ash Wednesday to Easter. At Holy Trinity, the Fastnacht Bake started with a group of ladies from the parish that decided to make and sell fastnachts as a fundraiser for the construction of the church building.

Jim Knapp, who runs the fryer room, emphasized that the Holy Trinity fastnachts are made with yeast and a “very little bit” of lard and are fried to golden brown perfection in vegetable oil. “A true fastnacht cannot be a cake doughnut,” noted Knapp.

Plain and glazed options are available, but according to Knapp the glazed fastnachts are the bestsellers year after year.

“The glaze is a top-secret recipe,” he added.

All fastnachts must be preordered at www.holytrinitycolumbiapa.com. The website opened for online orders on Jan. 19 and will remain open until sold out. Plain or glazed fastnachts may be ordered by the dozen and picked up at the church on any of the bake days. Fastnachts will be baked on Monday, Feb. 24; Tuesday, Feb. 25; and Wednesday, Feb. 26. After that, fastnachts will be baked on Mondays and Wednesdays during the four weeks of Lent, with the last bake on Wednesday, March 25. Doors will open at 10 a.m. for pickup each day. Any not picked up by 1 p.m. will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

“A lot of people freeze them to have all year,” remarked Carol Shive, who is in charge of the packaging and selling and has been volunteering with the bake for 20 years.

Holy Trinity’s motto for its fastnachts is “A little bite of heaven,” revealing a hint of the love and pride that goes into the fried pastries. The labor-intensive process begins with volunteers who arrive at 4 a.m. each bake day to start hand-rolling, shaping and

cutting the dough that has been prepared by the night crew, which carefully measures, weighs and mixes the ingredients. Additional volunteers arrive at 5:30 a.m. to operate the fryers, and others handle the sorting, counting and packing in preparation for pickup by the public.

Approximately 150 volunteers partake in the process. Last year, the crew made an astounding 6,775 dozen fastnachts - or 81,300 total. LCCD To Offer Scholarships The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) anticipates granting two $2,000 scholarships to Lancaster County high school seniors in 2020. Applications will be accepted from students continuing their education in the 2020-21 school year with the intent of majoring in a curriculum that focuses on natural resources and/or conservation.

Examples of acceptable programs of study include environmental sciences, wildlife and/or fisheries biology, environmental resource management, or other related programs. Acceptable programs should lead to an advanced degree (two-year associate degree or four-year baccalaureate degree).

The completed application must be received in the LCCD office by Tuesday, March 31.

The scholarship committee of LCCD will conduct a review of the applicants. The basis for selection will be determined on past performance and activities, current school and community involvement, future purpose and direction, and communication skills. The scholarship committee, prior to the final selection, will interview the top candidates. An announcement of the successful candidates

will be made by Friday, May 15.

The scholarships are made possible through an initial Ann Brown bequest, an annual fundraiser at the district banquet, and contributions from individuals. her debut. She had been coaching for Lampeter-Strasburg High School, but she came to Hempfield in part because she lives in the district.

“She has some of the best coaching credentials,” said sophomore Autumn Rhoads, adding that Ovchinnikoff had coached her club lacrosse team. “She can teach anybody, and she’s willing to take on new players.”

Ovchinnikoff has set a goal of having between 40 and 50 girls on the 2020 team, which would be an increase over last year’s roster of 32 players. “And the year before that was even smaller (and we had no seniors on the team),” commented junior Regan Gillisse. “We’re looking forward to the program being built up.”

The lacrosse players are also looking forward to growing in their relationships with each other and plan to start by helping the team’s booster club host a pancake breakfast on Saturday, March 7. The meal will be held in the cafeteria of the high school, 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville, from 8 to 10 a.m. Separate ticket prices have been set for children age 10 and younger and for adults. The menu will include allyou-can-eat plain and chocolate chip pancakes, sausage, orange juice, and milk.

This is the first time that the booster club has held a pancake breakfast, Autumn said. Her mother, booster club treasurer Christine Rhoads, explained that with the hiring of a new coach, the boosters wanted to come up with new ideas to help the athletes grow as a team. The idea for the meal came from booster club president Jill Yurchak, who is the mother of team captain and senior Lizzie Yurchak.

“Hopefully we’ll have a good turnout,” Lizzie commented.

A well-attended breakfast is important to the booster club’s budget, especially because of the anticipated increased participation in the lacrosse program.

Christine said the club pays for clothing for every athlete, the rental fees of an indoor facility for tryouts and preseason acclimation, food to be eaten on trips to away games, an end-of-season banquet, and some athletic gear. Team-bonding activities, such as last year’s ropes course outing, are also covered by the boosters. “(Team bonding) helps us on the field because we’re closer (emotionally),” Lizzie explained.

“I’m excited for the team to grow and bond,” said sophomore Kenna Price.

Tickets for the breakfast may be purchased from any lacrosse player or at the event. People planning to attend in large groups are asked to email Christine at crhoads2@gmail.com so the cooks can plan accordingly.

The booster club will also host a fundraiser for adults age 21 and older - an ’80s and ’90s trivia night to be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, at Twisted Bine, 93 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Registration will include entries in door prize drawings, and guests may opt to vie for other prize packs. Attendees may form their own teams of four to six players, or individuals may join a team upon arrival at the venue.

“The production thrives on small details,” Ramos said of Hempfield’s “Beauty and the Beast.” “The more attention (you pay) to detail, nuance, and intention, the better the show.”

For the upcoming show, the directors aim to uphold the “Disney magic,” but with a twist. “(We added) some realistic French elements to our production,” Ramos related. “The costumes will be traditional French attire, and the set will be trying to emulate real French architecture.”

Ramos is enjoying working with Hempfield students, and he has tried to provide opportunities for each of the cast members to develop as an artist through the production process. “Watching the Beast transform from monster into human is quite an amazing journey,” Ramos remarked. “I am eager to watch the audience appreciate all of the hard work everyone is doing on stage. This tale is old as time for a reason, (so) come see our production.”

The Broadway version of the “tale as old as time” includes songs by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Tim Rice.

Hempfield’s production will feature 68 students on stage and 27 students in the pit orchestra. Junior Laura Claire Walker will play the role of Belle, and sophomore Noah Felty has been cast as Beast, the young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. The villain, Gaston, will be played by Sean Becker, and his sidekick, Lefou, will be portrayed by Hunter Smith. Dance captain Akiya Rajnic, a senior, will perform with 14 feature dancers and 38 ensemble members.

The production is being overseen by choral director and music teacher Alejandro Ramos and stage director/choreographer Cody Smith. Ramos is in his first year of teaching, and this is his debut as a director at Hempfield. Campbell shared. “You’ve got the older generation coming in and having those memories that were here, and by reopening this iconic building on the main street to the public for creative processes, what we expect is that once we own the building it will be a secure space so that 20 years from now they can come back in with their kids and they’ll have those memories just like the grandparents have the memories of Heineman’s.�

One CCF project that Campbell said

received positive community feedback was a bike rack contest. Columbia Borough School District students submitted designs that were then displayed at CCF for the community to vote on. A mayfly design was selected as the winner to be constructed into a functional bike rack that is now located at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia.

Workshop Planned To Equip Faith Leaders On Saturday, Feb. 29, Global Outreach for Addiction Leadership and Learning (GOAL) Project will present a Face Addiction with Intervention & Training for Healing (FAITH) Initiatives training program at Florin Church of the Brethren, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy. A for-profit and not-for-profit collaboration has been formed in an effort to ensure that the community work being done at Columbia Creative Factory (CCF), 247 Locust St., Columbia, will be able to continue. An offshoot of the Lancaster Creative Factory, the CCF has been offering low-cost and free art classes and programming for children, youths, and adults since 2016. The building that housed the organization for four years on a donated basis was listed for sale in January 2019, explained CCF volunteer Andrea Campbell.

At that time, Campbell and others at CCF organized a capital campaign with hopes of purchasing the building. Approximately $185,000 has been raised of the $425,000 needed to buy the building and make necessary upgrades, including ADA accessibility. The final deadline for the campaign is Saturday, Feb. 29.

Individuals interested in making a taxdeductible donation to support the Columbia Creative Factory may visit www.columbiacreativefactory.org. One supporter has offered to match the next $25,000 raised so that contributions will be doubled.

If CCF purchases the building, The Pottery Works, a paint-your-own-pottery studio located at 16 W. Orange St., Lancaster, plans to launch a new location at the site of the current CCF in the spring. “We see so much potential in Columbia as we did in (downtown) Lancaster in the early 2000s: great people, great history and architecture, and great budding arts community,� shared Marcie Natale, owner of The Pottery Works.

Campbell explained that with The Pottery Works as an anchor tenant in the building, the nonprofit-owned space will remain on the Columbia Borough tax rolls.

Annual Tournament To Support CASA other tournaments on March 1 starting at 10 a.m. Registration will close on Feb. 29 at 9:30 a.m., and a player meeting and the main tournament will be held at 10 a.m.

The tournament will feature BCA standardized rules, 11 7-foot bar boxes, double elimination, and no handicaps.

There will be races to 5/4, with the loser breaking; this is subject to change.

For the 10th time, monies raised will be donated to CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Lancaster County to further its mission to provide adult advocates to every child in need of the organization’s services. CASAs mentor foster children through the system until a safe and satisfactory home is achieved.

Last year the event raised more than $30,000 for CASA, bringing the 10-year total to more than $180,000.

The annual Harry Hutchinson/Jack Byerly Charity 8-Ball Tournament will be held from Thursday, Feb. 27, to Sunday, March 1, at the Riverside Camping Association, 730 E. Strawberry St., Lancaster.

The event, named for the founding fathers of the Lancaster County 8-Ball League, is organized and sponsored by the 50-yearold pool league. It is open to all men and women who are amateur pool players.

The event will feature numerous giveaway drawings, gift basket auctions, and games. Additionally, several pool tournaments will take place throughout the event, including Mixed Scotch Doubles on Friday, Feb. 28; the Main Open event on Saturday, Feb. 29; and Ladies on March 1. Additionally, the event is open to the public on Feb. 27 and 28 from 6 to 10 p.m., Feb. 29 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and March 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when winners of all prizes will be drawn. World War II Club To Meet The World War II Oral History Club will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia.

The club will host Eleanor Isaacson, a World War II survivor. Born in New Jersey and abandoned at age 2, Isaacson grew up in Hitler’s Germany. She survived bombings, starvation, and many of the horrors of the Nazi regime before she reached her teens. She left Germany for the United States just as the Iron Curtain was closing.

The World War II Oral History Club meets on the last Tuesday of the month except December. All World War II veterans and family and anyone with an interest in WWII history are invited to attend.
