Bingo Fundraiser To Benefit Girls’ Lacrosse Team

In January, Artists Releasing the Kingdom (ARK) announced that it will collaborate with Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, on various classes and community events. ARK, a nonprofit community art association, will continue to hold free events and

classes at its location at 340 W. King St. in Lancaster, but it will move its paid classes to Mulberry Art Studios.

Since announcing the partnership, ARK has slated several series of classes that it will host at Mulberry Art Studios, such as Introduction to Pastel, Polymer Clay, Personal Makeup Artistry and Visual Journaling. The community

art collective has continued to offer free events like writers’ groups and movie nights at its main location.

“Our main goal is to help people to understand the purpose that they have creativity for,” said Jan Brenneman, who founded ARK in 2021 with his wife, Arnolda. “We’ve been artists and had a heart for

twist: designer handbags and gift cards will be given out as prizes for winning players, and the event will also feature door prizes and prize drawings. The winning prize will be split in half; one half will benefit the program and the other half will be awarded to the winner.

wanted to move three paintings by local artist Milton E. Denlinger located in the basement of the building. After several months of negotiations, the 12.5-by-4.5-foot paintings had found a new home near the front of the couple’s shop.

“They are painted on Masonite, so they are heavy,” said Dibartolo, who added that it takes six people to move each painting.

Denlinger, who lived from 1909 to 1991, was a Soudersburg resident who sold paintings from his shop on Route 30 near Paradise. He took lessons from local painters as far east as Philadelphia, and he worked in watercolors and pastels, as well as oils. He was known for his murals, including one of Christ that is still hanging in the Akron United Zion Church.

The three murals stored in the ULTWMA building were commissioned by Noah E. Martin in 1953 to hang in the ULTWMA building, then called the Leola Community Building. While the paintings depict seasonal scenes of Lancaster County, they are also historical, representing a chronological sequence of the area from the 1700s to beyond the 1950s. The winter scene, which is set in the 1700s, includes a red barn and a covered bridge all decorated in a layer of white. The summer scene, which harkens to the 1800s, depicts a steam train, a oneroom schoolhouse, and a swimming hole. Autumn

shows Lancaster County in 1953, with a glimpse into the future by featuring superhighways, a diesel train, and powered farm equipment.

Dibartolo said she and Heagy have delved into the story behind the pieces, noting they were painted in the living room of Denlinger’s ranch-style home in only a few weeks each. Each painting has a Bible verse on the frame. For instance, the winter scene quotes Matthew 5:5, which begins with “Blessed are the meek.” On the backs, Denlinger wrote his name, the year, and other information, including, “Theme … ‘How Dear Are the Scenes of My Childhood.’” Dibartolo has studied the paintings, and she pointed out Denlinger’s thumbprints in the smoke of the steam engine and the fact that in each one someone is waving to the viewer. She also noted the impressionist technique Denlinger used that makes the paintings clearer from a distance than they are up close.

Dibartolo noted the lavender hues of the sky in one painting and the shadows on the water in another. “Aren’t they beautiful?” she commented.

Jan grew up in Mountville and began taking painting classes at 9 years old. As a high schooler, Jan took commercial art classes though Lancaster County Career & Technology Center while he was enrolled at Hempfield High School. Jan went on to attend Roberts Wesleyan University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in fine art and met Arnolda.

Jan and Arnolda had three goals in mind when starting ARK: to empower artists with

resources to develop their skills, to impact the community in a positive way and to offer family-friendly events through the arts. As a faithbased organization, ARK also ordains those who feel called as ministers in the arts. “We want to totally empower people by teaching them art skills, but also by offering resources for people to develop their life skills. We want to focus on the whole person,” said Jan.

Knights Head Into Post-Season at 19-2

Hempfield wrapped up a successful 2023 regular-season campaign, clinching the Section One title with a 10-0 mark in the L-L League. With a close 74-71 victory at McCaskey, a 50-45 nonleague win on Saturday over Conestoga and a dominant 75-37 defeat of Lebanon in Landisville on Tuesday, February 7, the Knights head into the postseason with a 192 mark. Hempfield finished third in the District Three Class 6A power rankings.

The Red Tornado, who fell to 6-3 in league play, outscored the Knights 46-34 in the second half, making it a very close finish. Eric Centeno and De’Shaun McFadden each scored 18 for McCaskey.

Miguel Pena lit up the scoreboard to the count of 30 points, hitting three treys for the Knights. Kamyn Lawrence also contributed to the highscoring effort, putting up 21 points while Chase Calabretta poured in 14.

Lawrence had 10 points while Calabretta and Pena each scored nine in the Conestoga game on Saturday.

Against Lebanon, Hempfield came out of the locker room for the second half holding a 36-19 lead. The Knights didn’t let up at all, outscoring the Cedars 39-18 over the final two periods as Pena posted another 30-point game. This time the 6-foot-3 senior guard made six threepointers.

Calabretta (17 pts) and Michael Hester (12 pts) also contributed to the offensive dominance.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

In a Section One girls’ basketball battle, the Hempfield Black Knights held off McCaskey 73-37 on Wednesday, February 1. The Knights (10-10) honored their seniors on Senior Night at Hempfield with Autumn Cook, Lauren Moffatt and Lisa Ndungu contributing to the win.

“We had a lot of contributions from a lot of people,” head coach Kendra Merrifield

said. “It was senior night, so everyone came out with a lot of energy.”

The Black Knights, who improved to 4-5 in league play, led the Red Tornado 4024 heading into the second half. McCaskey (11-10, 3-6 league) scored only 13 points the entire second half.

Merrifield was asked about the defensive effort.

“We did a great job creating turnovers and winning the 5050 balls,” she said. “We also won the rebounding battle.”

Sophia Ott led Hempfield in scoring with 22 points, drilling four baskets from three-point range and converting all four of her free throws. Cook scored 20 while Moffatt finished with 15.

“Moffatt and Cook - their faces have been at the varsity level for four years,” Merrifield said. “They developed into great leaders on and off the court.

“Lisa Ndungu developed over the past two years at the varsity level,” continued the coach. “She fulfilled her role as a rebounder. It was great to see her develop on the defensive end.”

The Black Knights concluded their season with a pair of close contests. On Saturday, Hempfield lost at Central Dauphin 39-35.

In the low-scoring nonleague game, Hempfield actually led 16-13 at halftime. The Rams went on a 12-6 run in the third quarter and managed to hold Hempfield off by one point in the fourth.

“It was a very close game,” Merrifield said. “They are also a young team like we are. Our kids fought hard in that game. Unfortunately, we’ve been in a lot of games that we’ve been close.”

Cook had a team-high 11 points for the Knights, who fell to 10-11. Ott scored nine points and Nevaeh Ramirez seven points.

The Knights’ final opponent of the season was unbeaten Lebanon on Tuesday, February 7. The Cedars, having already clinched Section One, came into the game with a 200 record. In their earlier meeting this season, Lebanon edged Hempfield 52-50 in Landisville on January 12.

“They’ve worked hard and are where they are for a reason, so kudos to them,” Merrifield said, crediting Lebanon. “It was a close game. The margin doesn’t reflect how close a game it really was. The first half we played very well.”

Hempfield led 24-19 at halftime but ended up falling to the Cedars 60-49. Lebanon went on a 22-15 run in the

third quarter to gain a slight edge heading into the final period.

Lebanon’s Kailah Correa led all scorers with 17 points. Cook scorched the net from three-point range four times and finished with 16 points. Mia Brennan, who scored 12, and Ott (10 pts) each made two treys.

The Knights missed their chance for league and District Three playoffs as they finished 10-12 (4-6 league).

Merrifield remarked on the seniors playing their final home game in the McCaskey match.

“They came out and played like it was probably the last time they would be playing on their home court,” she said.

“We are going to have to improve a lot in the off-season,” continued the coach. “We’re losing offensive power in Lauren and Autumn. There are some juniors with varsity experience. Hopefully, some incoming players from junior varsity will step in and fill roles.”

WRESTLING

In the first round of the District Three 3A team championships held at Wilson on January 31, the Black Knights came up short against Central York.

The Knights entered districts as the 10th seed, going up against the seventh-ranked

team. Central Dauphin, the top-seeded team, made it through to the championship match, defeating Cumberland Valley 41-14.

The Central York match began at the 139-pound weight class where Hempfield’s Seamus Mack earned a 4-0 decision over Elias Long.

Braden Edwards was in a close battle at 145, losing 6-3. The Panthers notched four pins in the match. Michael Karpathios and Sutton Schopf earned pins for the Knights. Schopf (127) downed Giovanni Silimperi in 14 seconds. Karpathios finally cashed in over Cash Twigg at 114.

Caleb Mussmon, at heavyweight, escaped with a 1-0 defeat of Ian Scully.

BOWLING

Despite a tough 4-3 loss to Manheim Township on Friday, February 3, the Hempfield bowling team clinched the Section One crown to close out the regular season. Hempfield finished 60-31 in league bowling, edging Penn Manor by one point.

In Friday’s clash at Dutch Lanes, topping the Knights in total points was Xander Green at 673. Priest McKenzie, who had a nice 254 in his second game, compiled 667 points while Derick Keller finished at 636.

Women’s Garden Club Will Meet

event, the players are able to bond as a team. “We all have a lot of fun setting up and working the whole event,” said senior Whitney Hershey.

“The best part of participating in bingo is the team bonding.”

Bingo serves as the team’s largest fundraiser of the year.

The funds raised from the event are used in a variety of ways, such as other team bonding activities, turf rental, offseason training and uniforms and equipment for the players. Currently, the girls’ lacrosse team is preparing for the upcoming season with voluntary practices and winter league games at Spooky Nook Sports every Saturday. The players are also getting ready for the start of the season with strength and conditioning training.

The team hopes to overcome a few key challenges this year, the largest of which is the loss of 12 players who

graduated last year. Nine of the seniors were starters on the team, but many remaining players are excited to jump into the new season and lead the team. “I’m excited to see how good we’ll be this year,” said Claudia Ovchinnikoff, head coach of the team. “We have some players from last year who I’m confident will step in and play really well.”

Ovchinnikoff also noted that the players on the girls’ lacrosse team work together as a team both on and off of the field and create a positive atmosphere and support system for each other. “My favorite aspect of being on the team is watching everyone grow as players and individuals throughout the season,” added junior Natalie Bole.

Committee To Offer Scholarship

The Hempfield Area Democratic Committee (HADC) invites students who live in the Hempfield School District to apply for a $500 scholarship. The award will be given to a senior who will graduate in 2023 and who plans to pursue a postsecondary education. Applicants can be students at any Lancaster high school, but they must reside in the Hempfield School District.

The scholarship will be awarded based on a student’s

application, a short essay, and a brief interview.

The scholarship is named for Paul and Jan Wright, residents of East Hempfield Township and longtime active members of the HADC.

Glatfelter Memorial Field Brick Entrance To Be Dedicated

If you grew up in Columbia, chances are you played a sport or attended a community event at Glatfelter Memorial Field. The memories of times spent at the field, located at 1249 Lancaster Ave., helped generate support for a gate restoration project that began in 2021. The Glatfelter Memorial Field Trust board of directors now seeks your help in completing the restoration, with donations sought for a plaque that will be unveiled at the entrance to the gate during a dedication ceremony on Sunday, June 4, at 2 p.m. Donations of $1,000 and over will be recognized on the plaque, which will stand to the left of the gate as visitors enter the park. The deadline for donations is Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Robin Gamby, a member of the board of directors, emphasized that the committee will happily accept donations of any size to support the project. To date, over 78% of the project is funded, she stated, explaining that although the gate is complete, money is still needed to cover the costs of the restoration.

The brick entrance to the park was built in 1937 by the Glatfelter family in honor of Lt. Richard Glatfelter, a graduate of Columbia High School and the

U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He died in a car accident during his first assignment at Fort Dix, N.J. His father, David L. Glatfelter, donated the land to memorialize his son. The field was built by the Works Progress Administration during the Depression. At that time, in addition to the main gate, a grandstand was constructed, and the grading of a football field, a baseball field and tennis courts was completed. Landscaping on the grounds includ-

ed dwarf maple trees and large sycamore trees, many of which still stand today. The property currently includes five baseball fields, a football field, tennis courts that have been converted into a street hockey rink, a track and a pavilion. Since the early 1960s, the field has also served as the home of CBAA.

Along with Gamby, members of the board include Bill Kloidt, Kevin Kraft, Carl Glatfelter and Andy Ohrel. Audrey Kuhn is the honorary chair-

person of the fund drive. In addition to the fund drive for the plaque, the group will hold a Food Truck Extravaganza and Old-Fashioned Day on Saturday, May 6, at the field, as well as a golf outing in September. Both will be fundraisers for the project. Lancaster Native To Perform Recital

Redeemer Lutheran Church, 500 Pearl St., Lancaster, will host a recital at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19, by soprano Emily Riggs and her husband, pianist David Ballena. Featuring music by a diverse group of composers, the program will include several hymns and spirituals in addition to art songs by Amy Beach, H. Leslie Adams, Florence Price, and

Jake Heggie.

Riggs is a native of Lancaster and a graduate of Hempfield High School. She earned a Doctor of Music Arts in voice performance from the University of Maryland and a Master of Music in vocal performance /pedagogy from Westminster Choir College. Active as a soloist, Riggs has collaborated with the Grammy Award-win-

ning ensemble Eighth Blackbird and the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. Riggs is a founding member of the trio Ensamble Arte, and she studies with Marvin Keenze.

A native of Peru, Ballena completed a Doctor of Music Arts and Master of Music in collaborative piano from the University of Maryland - College Park and a Bachelor of Music in piano performance from the University of Louisville. Before accepting his current position as a lecturer at Eastern Connecticut

State University, he held positions at the University of Maryland - College Park and the University of Connecticut. Ballena has performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Carnegie Hall, as well as at the Aspen Summer Music Festival. The public is invited to attend the program at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Parking will be available in the Wheatland Middle School athletic parking lot at the end of Fifth Street, and there will be a shuttle bus to the church.

Film Screening, Discussion Planned

The Arts at Millersville University’s On Screen/In Person Film Series, in partnership with the MU Disability Film Series, will present “I Didn’t See You There” on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Steinman Hall at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The event will feature a panel discussion at 6:15 p.m., a screening of the 90-minute film at 7 p.m. and an in-person question-andanswer session with filmmaker Reid Davenport.

In “I Didn’t See You There,” Davenport shows how he sees the world, from either his wheelchair or his two feet, without having to be seen himself. The unexpected arrival of a circus tent outside his apartment in Oakland, Calif., leads him to consider the history and legacy of P.T. Barnum’s Freak Show.

“I Didn’t See You There,” Davenport’s first feature film, won the Directing Award for U.S. Documentary at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, the Grand Jury Prize at Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and the McBaine Bay Area Documentary Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival. It was scheduled to have a national broadcast on POV in January.

Panelists in the community discussion will include Jaclyn Nagle, executive director of the Disability Empowerment Center; Blue Guckert, a Millersville University (MU) student and president of MUADAPT; Jessica Hughes, assistant professor of communication and disability studies at MU; and Marco Di Giulio, associate professor of Hebrew language and literature at Franklin & Marshall College. Charles and Lois Hess of Pequea celebrated their 50th anniversary on Dec. 22 at a family gathering. The Hesses were married on Dec. 22, 1972, at Congregational Bible Church in Marietta by the Rev. John Hiestand. They are the parents of Lori Lefever of Pequea. Charles is a self-employed farmer.

Postcard Club Posts Meeting

At Wolf Sanctuary, The Displaced Feel Right At Home

All creatures, all species need a place to call their own, a place to call home. But that’s especially true for a species as social and territorial as Canis lupus.

The Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania, 465 Speedwell Forge Road, Lititz, is currently an adopted home for 54 displaced gray wolves and wolfdogs. All of the resident wolves are rescues, from different settings and difficult circumstances in places like Colorado, California, Florida, Canada and even more remote areas of Pennsylvania.

For most, the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania is their final stop, their forever home.

“We provide a lifelong home for displaced wolves,” said Michelle Mancini, the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania’s education coordinator. “They resemble their domestic relatives, but they don’t thrive in household settings. They’re built to live outdoors. They all come

to us from different settings, but the most common is household settings. We also have wolves from a handful of other settings like zoos.”

Appropriately enough, more than 80 acres of natural woodlands west of Brickerville serve as the setting for the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania. Its wolf population is broken down into pairs or packs based on demeanors and personalities, then housed in fenced-in outdoor areas of 1 to 3 acres in size.

“There’s a lot of mystery surrounding wolves,” said Mancini. “They’re very important to their ecosystems. They’re super intelligent. They don’t respond well to training, but they do well in problem-solving. And they’re super strong.”

“As individuals, wolves are interesting to learn about,” Mancini continued. “They’re social, but it takes a long time for them to build trust. Some wolves may be very shy when they get here. Some may trust

“Our secondary mission is education,” said Mancini. “We really want to foster a pride for the animal. People either adore them or fear them.”

Not only are guided walking tours of the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania available, they’re encouraged. The tours require reservations and serve as both an educational tool and a fundraising mechanism for the refuge.
