Hempfield School District Opens Kindergarten Registration Children residing in the Hempfield School District (HSD) who will be 5 years old prior to Tuesday, Sept. 1, are eligible to begin kindergarten in the fall of 2020. Parents and guardians who plan for their children to attend kindergarten this fall should complete the online registration process no later than Monday, Feb. 24.

The district has listed three steps for a successful countdown to kindergarten.

First, parents and guardians should visit the kindergarten registration page at www.hempfieldsd.org/ kindergarten to create an account and complete the online enrollment.

Next, those same individuals should call HSD Student Services at 717-459-9009 to schedule a time to bring their child’s birth certificate, proof of residency, immunization records, and parent or guardian photo identification to the registration office.

Finally, parents and guardians should plan to attend

Kindergarten Orientation Night at the school buildings where their children will attend school. During orientation, parents and guardians will learn more about the educational program, and they will be able to sign up their children for kindergarten screenings that will provide the respective school with valuable information about each individual’s health and personal strengths.

The Lancaster County 4-H program will hold the 34th annual Lancaster County 4-H Benefit Auction on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 9 a.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

Specialty items to be sold include a handcrafted tack box, a Quaker-style chicken coop, and certificates to the Fulton Theatre, Morr Range, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm, Rhoadstar Tire Center, and other businesses.

The volunteer auctioneers will be Charles Hess and representatives of All American Auction Company.

This year, the event will again offer a silent auction during the live auction. Silent auction items will include pizza gift certificates, certificates for car washes, and fast food restaurant coupons. Additional items to be up for bids include animal feed and supplies, household items, craft items, baked goods, tools, produce, and cookbooks. Local 4H clubs have donated theme baskets for sale, and themes include “Game Night,” “Pizza Night,” and “Chocolate Lovers.” Numerous other items and gift certificates for local services and merchandise will be offered.

Food items will be sold throughout the day by EphrataCocalico 4-H Community Club members.

training they need to be effective first responders.

“I needed to focus on my business; it’s picking up,” Rohrer added.

Don Schoenberger has replaced Rohrer as EPFC chief.

Schoenberger had served in that position prior to Rohrer’s first term. At 21 years in office, Rohrer is the longest-serving chief in EPFC’s 110-year history.

The fire company’s anniversary was on Jan. 22, and a celebration is being considered, Rohrer said.

EPFC leaders are working on planning events for the year, including the fire company’s popular potpie takeout fundraisers. Additionally, trainings are held on the first Monday of every month at 7 p.m., and business meetings take place on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. All activities are held at the fire station, 6076 Pine St., East Petersburg.

Being recognized by the council felt good, Rohrer said. “(I’ve invested) a lot of time and commitment to serve the community. Dad would be proud,” he added.

The Lancaster Bonsai Society will offer “Bonsai 101” on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Cottage Classroom of Stauffers of Kissel Hill Home & Garden Store, 301 Rohrerstown Road, Lancaster. introduction to bonsai and tips on growing and caring for bonsai trees as well as a demonstration of how one can create his or her own bonsai tree from common nursery plants. A question-andanswer session will follow the presentation.

president Kathleen Panus commented. “We certainly appreciate that.” To Rohrer, she added, “Thank you for your skills and making this one of the best fire companies in the county, if not the state.”

Rohrer was following his firefighter father’s example when he joined the EPFC as a junior firefighter in 1982. He worked his way through the different ranks, ultimately accepting the position of chief in 1998.

“It was a way to serve my community,” Rohrer remarked. “I love the fire service.”

In addition to directing the operations of the fire company, Rohrer became a state fire instructor with an emphasis on rescues. He frequently teaches at Bucks Community College, but he also travels to other counties to teach classes.

“It’s not really work; it’s fun. I tear up about 100 cars and buses a year,” Rohrer said. “I pass on techniques to people joining the fire service so they can make their communities safer.”

While Rohrer has stepped back from the top role at EPFC, he has not retired from the organization. Instead, he will serve as captain, with the primary responsibility of ensuring all fire company members receive the

hosting Huckabee. “He is a great example of a Christian who took his Christian faith seriously, even to the point of taking it to the political realm,” Myers commented. He described Huckabee as warm and welcoming, noting that those characteristics serve Huckabee well in his role as a pastor. “He’s a great exemplar of (passing on our faith to the next generation), and he can challenge us with credibility,” Myers added. “People tend to listen to him respectfully because he’s respectful.”

The program will also include performances by DCA choral groups led by Lindsey Stauffer.

While the singers are primarily in the upper grades, 15 members of the lower school’s Joyful Noise group will join them on stage.

“Jessie’s title matched well with the Remember America Speaker Series mission,” commented DCA marketing director Lisa Becker.

The event is expected to draw 1,500 to 1,600 attendees, certainly the largest audience Jessie has ever faced. “I’m really excited and really nervous all at the same time,” she said.

In the Chambersburg game, Durkota scored a game-high 22 points while Moffatt chipped in with eight points.

Merrifield was asked about guarding against a relatively unfamiliar team and focusing on the Trojans’ top scorer.

“I had gotten film from other teams that had played them,” she said. “We had seen that they’re very athletic. We told our kids to help focus on all players being on the same page defensively. That was a nice chance to have all five players help because we didn’t key in on one player necessarily.”

The undefeated Black Knights’ first league loss unfortunately came in the first round of the L-L League playoffs on Saturday. Hosting the Pequea Valley Braves - the Section Five runners-up - the Knights fell short 48-42.

The Braves (19-5) had fallen one game shy of first place in their section as Lancaster Country Day’s 9-1 record shaded the 8-2 Braves. But a 17-point fourth quarter put Pequea on top after the visitors had gone into the locker room trailing 21-18 at the half and had erased the deficit by the end of the third.

Durkota and Autumn Cook each scored 11 for the Knights. Weinoldt added 10 points and Moffatt eight.

Pequea’s Abbey Leslie sized up seven of her three-point attempts perfectly for 21 of her 25 points.

“A team that shoots 77 percent from three-point range will win most of the time,” Merrifield said. “Abbey Leslie had a hot hand. If she shot the ball backwards, it might have gone in.”

The Braves were 10-for-13 from three-point land, including Leslie’s 7for-8 success ratio.

The Hempfield defense did hold PV’s leading scorer Caroline Horst scoreless. But the Braves found another answer.

Merrifield did give credit to the veteran PV squad while emphasizing that the Knights did give it their all.

“We had our chances,” she said.

“Our kids did what we asked them to do - leave everything on the court. It’s not that we missed assignments or took them lightly; they came out as

hard as we did.

“Four of their seniors have been building and growing with their program,” she added.

Hempfield’s season continues on Monday February 17 in the District Three Class 6A brackets. The seventhseeded Knights will host number 10 seed Wilson.

“It was very good playoff game,” Merrifield said. “A lot of our kids haven’t been in playoffs. I think our kids brought all the effort they could. We would have loved to have come out on top and moved on, obviously. Now we’re going to prepare for districts.”

MERCHANDISER - Hempfield Edition BOYS’ BASKETBALL Hempfield held off Pottstown 72-61in a non-league boys’ basketball game at Landisville Saturday afternoon, February 1. The win improved the Knights’ record to 6-15.

The high-scoring performance included a 25-point burst right out of the gate as the Knights outscored the Trojans 25-18 in the opening period. They increased that lead to 44-32 by halftime. The teams exchanged scores fairly evenly in the second half - 29-28 in Pottstown’s favor.

Ryan Hiltons’ game-high 34 points paced Hempfield. Konnor Axe found his scoring touch from three-point range, making eight long-range baskets for 24 points.

Daniel Sears scored eight points.

In the regular season finale, it was McCaskey’s team that scored over 70 as the Red Tornado topped Hempfield 77-40.

The Knights fell behind on the road 15-4 and trailed 35-19 at the half, falling to 4-9 in the league.

McCaskey improved to 14-7 (10-3 league).

The Red Tornado’s Elijah Terry scored a game-high 22 points.

Hugh Pohl and Daivon EdmondGreen led the Knights with eight points each.

BOWLING Hempfield topped Elizabethtown 5-2 at Leisure Lanes on Tuesday afternoon, February 4. The win improved the Black Knights’ record to 28-46 in the league (3348 overall). The Bears remained first in Section Two though they slipped to 65-26 (79-26 overall).

Nick O’Neill and Logan Moyer were matching each other in crushing pins as O’Neill finished with a 685 series on the day and Moyer with 684.

O’Neill’s top game was a 248, followed by a 247 score while Moyer opened with a 254 and bowled a 225 before slipping to 205 in the third game.

Spring Gardening Workshop Slated Landis Valley Village and Road, Lancaster, will be the site Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill of a Spring Gardening Workshop focused on heirloom gardening on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature two special speakers, Amy Goldman in the morning and Pat Brodowski in the afternoon.

Goldman, past chairman of the board of Seed Savers Exchange, is an heirloom plant gardener and the author of multiple books on her favorite vegetables and heirloom seed gardening in general. During the morning portion of the workshop, she will share about the variety

of “fruit vegetables” that she grows in her heirloom gardens and will talk about the flavors that can be found by cultivating and propogating heirloom seeds.

Brodowski is the specialty gardener at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s estate, where she has been tending to the 1,000foot-long kitchen garden’s herbs and vegetables for the past 10 years. She will share how the kitchen garden came to be and will discuss the unusual plants that she preserves and

propogates there, along with seed-saving techniques. She is a graduate of Cornell University, and she completed her master’s thesis at McDaniel College on Jefferson’s cultivation of salad greens and herbs.

Each session will include a time for questions and answers.

The Hempfield boys’ team finished 10th with seven team points.

The girls’ highlights included a winning time of 3:39.80 for the 400yard freestyle relay team made up of Maggie Shaffer, Anna Koger, Katelyn Wiglesworth and Kate Yoder.

Wiglesworth and Yoder competed individually in the 100 freestyle, posting a third-place time of 54.76 and a seventh-place time of 56.05, respectively.

Sophomore Ella Root (1:05.37) claimed second in Saturday’s 100 breaststroke while freshman Emily Taylor was fifth in the event at 1:10.00. On Friday Taylor took fifth in the 200 individual medley at 2:14.59.

Root, Wiglesworth and Yoder welcomed freshman Caroline Schweigert to form a formidable quartet in the 200 medley relay on Friday. Their time of 1:52.94 was good for third place. Shaffer also earned fourth (1:59.20) in the 200 freestyle.

In a competitive 50 free, Wiglesworth and Yoder were second and third with respective times of 24.89 and 25.35 while Koger earned eighth place with her 25.99.

Also in freestyles, the 200 free relay team of Shaffer, Taylor, Yoder and Rory Cantwell finished third in 1:42.37.

Shaffer was just under a minute in the 100 fly, taking third at 59.50 seconds.

In the boys’ 200 medley relay, Ardan McHugh led off the foursome that also included fellow freshman Will Russell and juniors Johnathan Sescilla and Xander Hughes. They claimed eighth in 1:53.10.

In the 200 free relay, Hughes and Sescilla teamed with Gavin Krawizcki and Josh Sahd for a seventh-best time of 1:34.41.

Hughes was eighth (1:03.33) in the 100 breaststroke.

Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) will perform Katori Hall’s critically acclaimed two-person drama “The Mountaintop” on select dates from Friday, Feb. 14, to Sunday, Feb. 23, in the Eater Theater at the Marietta Center for the Arts, 133 W. Market St., Marietta. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14 and 15, and Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Feb. 20, 21, and 22. Matinee shows will begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 16 and 23.

“The Mountaintop” is Hall’s fictional retelling of how the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spent his last night on Earth before his assassination. The 90-minute drama is set entirely in one room at The Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn., on April 3, 1968, and will star Jeremy R. Patterson as King and Pilisa Nicolette Mackey as Camae. King is working on a speech when Camae, a maid working at the motel, interrupts to deliver his coffee. A conversation ensues examining King’s achievements, failures, and unfinished dreams.

Patterson said “The Mountaintop” will likely challenge audience members’ preconceived ideas about King and who he was. “It’s going to be a mixture of how Katori Hall and (SSC director) Jim Johnson view him and an exploration between Pilisa and myself,”

described Patterson. “If we’re doing our jobs right, people are going to leave wrestling with the work about (King) and his story.”

That the timing of the play coincides with February being Black History Month is a mixed bag for Patterson. “It’s a blessing and a curse,” said Patterson. “It’s great to have the opportunity to take the month that is nationally recognized as Black History Month and participate in (a play) that recognizes something so historically relevant, but it’s also a thing where you go, ‘Had to be in February, huh?’ But it’s a great start.”

“I celebrate Black History Month every month, but I definitely do really go a little more extra for February,” Mackey remarked. “I really like the idea that it’s written by a black playwright because I want to be about that. It does paint a really great picture of Martin Luther King that is not whitewashed.”

As for the character of Camae, Mackey describes her as “unapologetically black.” “I love that. I relate to that 100%,” she shared.

“I definitely identify with the pride and the dignity that she takes in being a black woman, especially in a time that black women were treated like dirt.”

“She really embodies the three different prevailing stereotypes of black women: the mammy, the jezebel, and the sapphire,” continued Mackey. “Camae has to

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will present its fourth concert series of the season, “ Winter Romance.”

The Friends of the Lancaster Public Library host their annual winter book sale on Friday, Feb. 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, Feb. 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The sale will take place The Book ReSort Center, 225 N. Marshall St., Lancaster.

The sale will offer more than 20,000 books, including fiction and nonfiction. Some items will be

individually priced. The sale will include vinyl records, DVDs, and audiobooks, as well as music CDs. Feb. 16 will be half-price day.

All proceeds from the sale will directly benefit the library and play a vital role in the operating budget for Lancaster Public Library. On-site free parking is available, and payment with credit cards is welcome.

Each year, the Friends of the Lancaster Public Library hold several

book sales that raise nearly $200,000 for the library. Additionally, the Friends have two bookstores that are open year-round: the Marshall Street Bookstore, located at 225 N. Marshall St., which is also the location for donation processing, and the Juliana Bookstore, located on the first floor of the Lancaster city location.

The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recently announced that Roger S. Brubaker of Lancaster, Meadow Valley Electric Inc., Ephrata, has been named 2020 chair of the board.

Brubaker was the past owner and president of Wilco Electric Inc. for 30 years. In 2019, Wilco Electric was sold to Meadow Valley Electric Inc., and Brubaker currently serves as director of construction services for Meadow Valley. He is the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC) OAC electrical chair and a member of the Hempfield School District Business Advisory Council, and he has been a member of the Pennsylvania Apprenticeship and Training Council since 2018.

Brubaker has been very involved with the ABC Keystone Apprenticeship Committee and has also been a member of the ABC Keystone board of directors since 2010. Brubaker studied at West Chester University and Elizabethtown College. Currently, he and his wife reside in Lancaster.

Working in food service involves much more than asking “Would you like fries with that?” Food service workers may be employed in grocery stores, retirement communities, schools, office building cafeterias, restaurants, and anywhere else that qualifies as a retail food establishment as defined by law. One of the top priorities of all food service workers is to keep consumers safe.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has created a model food code, which is updated every four years, and states can create their own based on the model. According to Penn State Extension, the FDA Food Code provides updated science-based guidance and recommendations on how to handle food safely in order to reduce or prevent foodborne illnesses.

Until recently, the FDA Food Code required that one person within a food service operation be a Certified Food Protection Manager. The new update, announced in February 2018, now requires that the person in charge of a facility be certified. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA), which oversees the state’s food code and the Food Employee Certification Act, adopted the update and declared the change in certified managers to go into effect in 2020.

Certification must be renewed every five years. PDA recognizes manager certification programs offered by five organizations. Penn State Extension offers local classes for the PDA-approved ServSafe program from the National Restaurant Association (NRA). The classes are typically held in groups of two, with one week separating them. A proctored exam is offered at the end of the second day, and a score of 75% or higher is required to receive a certificate. Exams may be taken four times in one year, but they must be spaced out according to the association’s guidelines.

Accommodations for people with disabilities are available through the NRA. Sometimes accommodations might include having more time to complete an exam or having the exam read aloud by someone without a food safety background. “There are ways (we) will work with individuals to help them succeed,” Reed said.

Exams are available in English as well as Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, French Canadian, and large-print English.

Classes taught in Spanish are available in Kennett Square, although Reed noted that she has a bilingual program assistant who can teach the class in Spanish in Lancaster.

Anyone who is interested in food safety is welcome to take a ServSafe course. “We have a lot of individuals who take the class who are just interested in food safety, (as well as) volunteers or people interested in the possibility of a career change,” Reed said. “I know a lot of employers do value certification, to the point that they will send large groups of employees to classes at one time.”

Along with potentially helping someone obtain a job in food service, the ServSafe program provides valuable knowledge for use in other contexts too.

“It’s information that you can apply even at home so that (you can) make sure you are preparing food safely for your family or (when you are) volunteering in the community,” Reed commented.

National Anthem Auditions Posted Auditions for national anthem singers for the Lancaster Barnstormers’ 16th season will take place on Saturday, Feb. 22, in Center Court at Park City Center, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster.

Sessions will be held at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m.

Individuals looking to honor America with the gift of their voices or instrumental talents are invited to participate in the open tryouts. A panel of judges

will be on hand to assess the performances. Officials from the Barnstormers will score each performance and invite the top scorers to perform at the stadium for one or more of the club’s 72 home games during the 2020 regular season.
