On Sunday, March 5, Mountvillebased nonprofit Help The Fight will host its annual bingo event at Penn Manor High School, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The fundraiser will open its doors at noon, followed by bingo at 1:30 p.m. Participants must be at least 18 years old to play, and tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door on the day of the event,

Ware Center Exhibit Will Feature Local Artists

OnFriday, Feb. 3, The Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will open an exhibit titled “Of Light and Legacy.” The exhibit will celebrate African American History Month by featuring pieces from multiple local artists, including Hempfield resident Malcolm Corley. The opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., and the exhibit will be on display until Friday, Feb. 24.

Malcolm was diagnosed with a developmental disorder when he was 3 years old. As an individual on the autism spectrum, Malcolm struggles with verbal communication and certain social cues, but he began using art as a form of expression as a child. Malcolm would make drawings of his favorite characters from the children’s show “Blue’s Clues” and reimagine the colorful characters featured in Dr. Seuss’ books. Malcolm received his

first art award in elementary school in Hempfield School District, and when he was in middle school, one of his pieces was displayed by school staff in the school district administration building.

As a student at Hempfield High School, Malcolm continued to create and attended a painting course. The head of the art department at the school, Brian Lehman, noticed Malcolm’s work during class and thought that Malcolm possessed the talent required for Advanced Placement (AP) art courses. “It was a challenge for him because he wasn’t used to working within a specific timeframe, but because of AP art, he had so many opportunities.” said Maria Corley, Malcolm’s mother. “It was quite a blessing to be in this school district.”

Malcolm had his first solo show in 2017 and has since seen his work featured in exhibits across North America. “Untitled #1,” a piece that Malcolm painted in his AP art class, was selected for The Kennedy Center’s

VSA program in 2019. The same piece was featured in the Crip Ritual art show in Toronto last year, and Malcolm has pieces in the permanent collections of both the Lancaster Museum of Art and the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. In between exhibits, Malcolm has had his work recognized by various online journals and he has been commissioned to create work for private collections.

“Malcolm’s art is a gift,” Maria said. “He isn’t obsessive about it, but he loves making things that people appreciate. I know he’ll be happy to see his work on the wall come opening night.”

Malcolm and his artwork will also be featured in a documentary by local filmmaker Jim Hollenbough, which will premiere in March. The documentary will focus on the work of four local artists with disabilities, including Malcolm.

Acorn Acres announced that it will host a Groundhog Day scavenger hunt from Thursday, Feb. 2, until Sunday, Feb. 5. The wildlife rehabilitation center, which is located in Millersville, collaborated with multiple businesses in downtown Lancaster to coordinate an event that celebrates the holiday tradition and interrupts the infamous lull of the post-Christmas winter months.

if any tickets remain.

The fundraiser will include 20 games of bingo, as well as a few extra games that attendees can purchase tickets for. Each game will offer players an opportunity to win a designer purse, and an extra round will be held to give players a chance to win more than one purse. The bingo fundraiser serves as one of Help The Fight’s main fundraisers held throughout the year, and this is the first year that the organization has elected to host it at Penn Manor High School.

The money raised from the fundraiser will directly benefit Help The Fight and its mission to provide financial assistance to those in the area who are battling breast cancer. “The money being raised is helping people in the community. It doesn’t go toward anything other than financial aid to help those who need it,” said Susie Dailey, patient coordinator for Help The Fight.

The event was first held in 2021, following COVID-19 lockdowns that put local businesses in a dire position. “February is already notoriously bad for downtown businesses because of the cold weather,” said Betsy Shank, founder of Acorn Acres. “I wanted to do something to lighten everyone’s mood and get traffic into struggling businesses.” Shank connected with Heather Kreider, a friend of hers and the owner of Hempfield Apothetique, and the two began to brainstorm ideas for an event.

Shank and Kreider decided on hosting a scavenger hunt that involved several businesses in Lancaster city. For the duration of the four-day event, participants were tasked with visiting a list of local stores, each offering a unique Groundhog Day item or promotion.

Acorn Acres’ mascot, a groundhog named Poppy, also appeared sporadically throughout the event for photo opportunities. “People were smiling again. It was such a fun thing to do,” said Shank.

Now that a sense of normalcy has mostly returned after the COVID-19 pandemic, the scavenger hunt has expanded. Ten businesses will participate this year, and the event’s activities have been modified to include children in addition to adults. The event will kick off with a four-hour event at 10 a.m. on Feb. 2 at Hempfield Apothetique, 100 W. Walnut St., Lancaster. An official prognostication will be held at 11 a.m., and the opening day event will be attended by representatives from Our Town Brewery and Ville & Rue. Our Town Brewery will offer a new IPA brewed in collaboration with Acorn Acres and themed after Groundhog Day.

After Hempfield Apothetique, the event will move to Decades, located at 438 N. Queen St. in Lancaster. The bowling alley and bar hybrid

will offer a cocktail named after Poppy, called the Snap Kraken Pop; for each of the special cocktail purchased, Decades will donate $1 to Acorn Acres. The festivities will resume on the following day at Lancaster Recreation Commission, 525 Fairview Ave., from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and pick up again at Ville & Rue, 8 W. King St., from 6 to 8 p.m.

On Saturday, the celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Miesse Candies & Ice Cream, located at 118 N. Water St. in Lancaster. The event will then move to the Barnstormers’ Stadium at 3 p.m. and conclude at 7 p.m., during which activities will be offered for children. The Groundhog Day scavenger hunt will wrap up on Feb. 5 at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m., Acorn Acres will host a livestream on its Facebook page where staff members will read “The Night Before Groundhog Day,” a book geared toward younger children.

“One thing I wanted to do when I started Acorn Acres was support local businesses,” said Shank. “This event is our way of giving back to the community during the normally dreary months.”

Black Knights Pin Streaks, 52-24

Hempfield and Manheim Township squared off in a Section One wrestling match on Wednesday, January 25 in Landisville. The Black Knights prevailed 52-24, gaining momentum with a Braden Edwards major decision at the 152-pound weight class and compiling 12 more team points on Township forfeits to gain a 16-6 lead before J.J. Plaza pinned Riley Schmidt 44 seconds into the 189-pound bout to give the Knights a commanding lead.

“I think the 152 to 172 bouts will probably decide the match,” Hempfield head coach Shane Mack stated prior to the match. “Where you start [weight class] the team can start with a win and get the momentum,” he added. “Sometimes you keep rolling.”

The Knights rolled not only to a victory but the Section One trophy.

“We’ve won the section the past four years,” Mack pointed out.

The Knights gave up six uncontested points at 215 only to gain them back thanks to a Caleb Mussmon pin at 285 over MT’s Taylor Veilleux.

Wrapping around to the 107weight class, Charlie Williams took six points on a forfeit only to have the Streaks’ Kaedyn Williams and Kamdyn Williams post back-to-back

pins at 114 and 121, respectively.

“Kaedyn and Kamdyn are two of the best kids in the state,” Mack stated.

Seamus Mack notched a firstperiod pin at 127. At 133, Zy McCain-Murray needed only 46 seconds to pin Zach Landis. Senior Kamron Fickes wrapped it up with a pin at 139 pounds.

WRESTLING HALL of FAME

The Lancaster-Lebanon League Wrestling Coaches Association added four new members, who were outstanding former wrestlers in the league. Matt Fittery, Luke Stauffer, Austin Miller, and Eric Narkiewicz were inducted during the L-L League Championship Tournament at Manheim Township.

While Stauffer is an Elizabethtown alumnus from 2002 and Fittery wrestled in Cocalico until 2004, the other two have Hempfield ties.

Miller (Class of 2011) is the school’s all-time leader in victories with 145.

“He has been coaching with us the past couple of years,” Mack said. “He has a great mind for the sport of wrestling.

“Austin has been in

a lot of programs and exposed to a lot of great coaching,” Mack continued. “He has coached at both the collegiate level and starting recently at the high school level.

“He was a national qualifier at Bucknell and also wrestled at Oklahoma State,” Mack said of Miller. “He wrestled against some of the best in the country.

“Eric has an impressive wrestling resume,” Mack said of Narkiewicz, a Warwick 1999 alumnus. “We’re very happy to have him. He also coached with Manheim Township for a while.”

SWIMMING

Hempfield won in dominant fashion over L-L League opponent Penn Manor on Tuesday, January 24. The boys’ team topped Manor 121-39 and the girls won 111-48.

“We had some excellent swims,” head coach Casey Lear said. “With the league meet around the corner, I was trying to get as many automatic qualifiers as possible.”

Jace Colino, Ivan Vitko, Ardan McHugh and Toby Marco combined for the 200-meter freestyle relay, winning it in 1:48.58. McHugh also won the boys’ 400 free.

Marco was the anchor in the foursome that included Jackson Root, Ryan Taylor and Andrew Gates.

Gates, Taylor, Root and Kiran George had a winning time of 1:56.22 in the 200 medley relay.

Jonathan Tsang was the 100 backstroke winner.

Vitko (2:13.73) and Colino (2:22.99) were winners in the 200 freestyle and 200 IM, respectively. Tsang and Trowbridge were third and fourth with respective times of 27.29 and 27.67 in the boys’ 50 freestyle.

Trowbridge won the 100 breaststroke at 1:18.53 while Maya Trow-

bridge captured the girls’ 100 breaststroke at a 1:26.47 clip.

“Colin and Maya Trowbridge, who are brother and sister, both had some excellent time drops that will set them up for a good post-season,” Lear added. “They both also dive for us, so I’m looking forward to seeing them perform at Manheim Township.”

In the boys’ 100 free, Root and Marco took the top two spots while Taylor placed third.

The girls’ 400 free relay went to Ava Mayer, Lucy Bishop, Emily Taylor and Micah Wiglesworth at 4:30.11. The foursome of Isabelle Heisey, Caroline Schweigert, Carol Fabian and Anna Koger were close behind at 4:30.76.

“All in all, we had time drops left and right,” Lear said. “It could not have come at a more important time. I’m super proud of the kids for the work they’ve put in. I think they’re going to start seeing some results they too will be proud of.”

The girls’ 200 free relay went to Farmer, Taylor, Heisey and Koger (2:01.26).

Lucy Bishop was a winner in the 200 and 400 free. Wigglesworth and Taylor went 1-2 in the 200 IM while Heisey and Mayer claimed second and third in the 100 freestyle.

Mia Roettger’s time of 1:22.26 and Sarah Roth’s 1:22.72 earned second and third, respectively, in the 100 back.

The two squads were coming off a sweep of McCaskey the previous week with the boys winning 131-28 and the girls posting a 120-47 victory. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

After doubling up Cedar Crest 4020 at home on Friday, January 20, the girls’ basketball team suffered back-to-back setbacks, including a loss to Manheim Township.

In Friday’s win, the defense held the Falcons to single-digit scoring in each of the quarters. Sophia Ott led all scorers with 14 points. Lauren Moffatt complemented Ott with a 13-point performance.

In Saturday’s non-league game at Wilson, the Knights extended their 19-17 halftime lead to 31-28 by the end of the third stanza. The Bulldogs outscored the visitors 21-9 in the fourth for a 49-40 win.

Coming away with a 10-point game was Nevaeh Ramirez. Cook compiled nine points while Moffatt put up eight.

In a high-scoring Section One game, Township topped Hempfield 65-57. The Streaks’ 20-13 run in the first quarter helped pace them to victory.

Ott had a great game, scoring 20 points. Cook (16) and Ramirez (10) each scored a pair of treys.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Hempfield improved to 7-0 in the L-L League with a 54-48 victory at Manheim Township on Tuesday, January 24. In a closely contested Section One match, each side equaled the other point-for-point in the second half. Thanks to the 26-20 halftime

advantage, Hempfield held on for a win, improving to 15-2 overall.

Miguel Pena scored 18 for the Knights, drilling the basket three times from three-point range. Kamryn Lawrence came through with 13 points while Chase Calabretta added 12.

Pena poured in 17 points in a Saturday afternoon non-league battle with Central Dauphin, helping Hempfield to a 59-48 win. Once again, the 6-foot-3 senior made three treys.

Calabretta and Ben Troyer each scored 15, giving Hempfield a threeheaded attack.

Less than 24 hours earlier, the Knights’ 14-6 run in the first period helped them top Cedar Crest 60-42.

Pena was virtually unstoppable, scorching the net for 24 points while Calabretta and Troyer scored 12 and 11, respectively.

BOWLING

Hempfield’s bowling team topped Lebanon 7-0 on Monday at Leisure Lanes. The Knights kept pace with Penn Manor atop the Section One standings at 48-22. Priest McKenzie was consistent all day, rolling a 227, 223 and 223.

Help The Fight

Help The Fight not only provides assistance to those in active treatment for breast cancer, but also provides the resources for people to access screening for early detection of breast cancer. The organization hosts five or six fundraisers every year and uses the proceeds to cover various bills that cancer patients may be struggling with such as rent, day care expenses, insurance premiums, car payments and utility costs. “Most patients will have a limited income because of treatment, so there’s a real need to help these

frompg 1

families with the financial aspect,” said Bonnie Mann, treasurer of Help The Fight. “It takes a lot of burden off of them; they have enough going on.”

Help The Fight began in 2009 as a bake sale to raise funds for cancer patients. The nonprofit has steadily grown over the years beyond a roadside stand that sells baked goods and has raised over $1 million for cancer patients since its inception.
