The World War II Oral History Club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia. The club will welcome Lancaster County resident Rosette Lobel, a Holocaust survivor. Lobel was born in France and grew up under Hitler’s regime during the five-year Nazi occupation. A homework assignment is due by Monday, Feb. 25, for parents and guardians who choose to send their children to kindergarten in the Hempfield School District this coming fall. In Pennsylvania, students are not compelled to attend school - whether public, private, or home - until they are age 8.

In the Hempfield School District, students who opt to attend kindergarten for the 2019-20 school year must be 5 years old prior to Sunday, Sept. 1, 2019.

To access the assignment, parents and guardians should visit www.hemp fieldsd.org/kindergarten. There, they will create an account and complete the online enrollment. Then, they will call Student Services at 717-459-9009 to schedule a time to bring their young students’ birth certificates, proofs of

Church To Host Clothing Giveaway, Aaron’s Acres Gears Up For Summer Camp Community Meal

Trinity Lutheran Church members and friends work together to offer an annual clothing giveaway and community meal. This year’s event - the 11th annual - is slated for Saturday, Jan. 26, at the church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy, will hold its 11th annual clothing giveaway and community meal on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The event is open to anyone who is in need of clothing. No one is turned

Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, invites families with soon-to-be preschoolers and kindergartners to its Early Childhood Education Open House on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m.

The open house will feature a Valentine’s party that will focus on 1 Corinthians 13:13, which states, “The greatest of these is love.” Parents will meet with teachers and learn the distinctives of the Principle Approach, the method of education that is used at Dayspring and that was used during the Colonial and founding periods in America.

According to headmaster Dr. Mike Myers, the Principle Approach is rooted in the Word of God. Dayspring offers two kindergarten programs - Developmental Kindergarten and Academic Kindergarten - in which children begin to learn the rudiments of subjects such as science, history, and geography while learning to view God as the Author of every subject. Both kindergarten classes incorporate field studies, as well.

The Developmental Kindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who just turned 5 at the start of the school year. The program is activity-oriented while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a

first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, and delve into literature as they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them.

The Academic Kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old through early age 6 at the start of the school year. The program is still activity-oriented, but more emphasis is placed on paper-and-pencil activities and structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded and built upon as a tool for scholarship. The Writing Road to Reading literacy program is introduced, and students expand their phonetic awareness and segmentation in preparation of

beginning to read. The school reports that many children learn to read before completing Academic Kindergarten.

Dayspring’s Developmental Kindergarten and Academic Kindergarten programs are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. For parents who desire to supplement these or who simply need a five-day option, IDEA! (Inspire, Discover, Explore, and Achieve) is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This program offers a community style of learning, as well as a focus on direct Bible reading, science and history, STEM, collaborative group projects, history character studies, other creative avenues, and more.

In addition to kindergarten and the supplemental kindergarten program, Dayspring offers preschool programs for children who are age 3 by Sept. 1.

Preschool is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 11 a.m.

This program offers an introduction to the alphabet, with students learning a Bible hero for each letter of the alphabet, culminating with Bible character day. Age-appropriate history, science, literature, and math lessons are incorporated, and guided free play and circle time are offered. Daily art projects incorporate the focus on history, science, Bible, and literature.

“ We have given out $350,000,” said John Mullineaux of the Lancaster Bicycle Club (LBC). “The single biggest (amount) was for municipal and EMS (emergency medical services) bike patrols. We’ve purchased bicycles and equipment (for those organizations).”

Mullineaux added that Lancaster police and police stations in a number of county boroughs have received funds from the club to purchase bikes.

LBC is currently seeking applicants so that the club can give away another $25,000 in grants.

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and schools. The application form may be found at https:// lancasterbikeclub.net/grant -program. Completed applications are due to the club by Friday, Feb. 15.

“It is a simple application process,” said Mullineaux. “We ask for a short description of what they will do (with the funds) and how much they want.”

Mullineaux said that the application form also asks what the organization will do if it does not receive the grant.

“I pull all the applications together and do a presentation for the board, and they (usually) vote up or down,” said Mullineaux, who added that sometimes the amount of the grant request is modified by the group. Those receiving grants must initiate their projects during the 2019 calendar year.

The grants were first given in 1990. Over the years, the types of requests that have been granted have varied. “We have spent money on bicycle advocacy,” recalled Mullineaux. “We have spent more than $30,000 on bicycle racks.” Mullineaux said many bicycle racks seen in Lancaster city and around the county were provided by the club. The club has also purchased road signs and bicycles for elementary school gym classes that were used to teach bicycle safety.

Mullineaux said that one of the most unusual awards was to the mural project at the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail near Columbia. A part of the 250-foot-long mural will show a bicycle rider on the trail.

In addition to the $25,000 grants, LBC also donates $5,000 to the county to help defray costs of maintaining covered bridges and $5,000 to HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, for student scholarships. The scholarship program grew out of the 450-member club’s annual Covered Bridge Ride. The ride, which dates back

40 years, was originally just for club members. “We expanded (the ride) to include visitors because of the great place Lancaster County is,” said Mullineaux. Originally, the intention of the ride was to raise funds to augment the club’s budget, but in the 1990s, Bicycling magazine listed the ride as the best in Pennsylvania.

“Attendance exploded,” said Mullineaux. “One year, we hit 4,000 (riders).” The ride is now restricted to 2,300 participants.

It begins at the HACC Lancaster campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. Several routes will be offered. The 62-mile metric century route will head north to New Holland, Farmersville, Terre Hill, and Reamstown, before turning south to return to HACC. Seven covered bridges will be part of the route. Additional routes include a 31-mile course with four covered bridges and a 15-mile ride with two covered bridges. One option adds a loop at Stevens that travels 32 difficult miles for riders who wish to complete a more challenging ride.

Neighbors Together Mount Joy Minnie To Return For Quirky Tradition at R M C

In the 10 years that Mount Joy Minnie has been popping up out of her tree stump on Feb. 2 to predict either a welcome early spring or six more blasted weeks of winter, the groundhog has been correct eight out of 10 times, according to Minnie’s “handler,” Nancy Shonk.

With Groundhog Day 2019 fast approaching, Minnie and her posse - members of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce recently gathered to promote this year’s event, scheduled for the usual early hour of 7 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Rotary Clock, located at East Main Street and Marietta Avenue in Mount Joy. This reporter wanted to know:

Does the magnificent marmot have a secret to her impressive 80 percent success rate? Minnie remained mum - she was, after all, rudely roused from her hibernation for this publicity gig. And Shonk was not about to spill any secrets.

“She just has that feeling,” Shonk said. “She’s competing with the big boys, so she has to be pretty accurate.”

The “big boys” are, of course, the famous Punxsutawney Phil and Lancaster County’s own Octorara Orphie, who rarely agree on a winter forecast.

Minnie was Lancaster County’s first (and only) female groundhog, thanks to the vision of the late Bob Myers, an eccentric, fun-loving Mount Joy businessman who hosted Minnie’s first Groundhog Day appearance in 2008.

After Myers died unexpectedly in July 2008, the festivities were put on hold the following February. But in 2010, Shonk, then the Chamber’s executive director, got permission from Myers’ widow, Sharon, to restart the quirky event. It has been held every year since, at times drawing up to 100 people, including families with children, according to Shonk.

For those readers who are still wondering: No, Minnie is not a flesh-and-blood groundhog; she’s a puppet that lives in a tree stump made of chicken wire and papier-mache. But some confusion is understandable. Take Carl Hackman Jr., Chamber president, who admitted, “It took me three years to figure out she wasn’t real.” (Oh, but her powers are real, very real indeed.)

About four years ago, a crazy hat contest was added to the fun, since Minnie herself sports a sprightly spring bonnet. Winners get Mount Joy Money gift certificates from the Chamber, which can be spent at downtown businesses.

Last year, Minnie even donned a Philadelphia Eagles football helmet. “Last year she also predicted the Super Bowl winner, too,” stated Hackman, referring to the Eagles’ 2018 championship.

So, what would the late Myers think of the event today?

“He’d love it,” answered Sharon.

“He would have probably had a parade,” added Shonk.

Kerry Meyers, Chamber coordinator, described it as “just a fun community event.”

“The amount of people that we have out here sometimes, it’s a lot of people for as cold as it is,”

Meyers added. “Everyone’s usually in a good spirit. And the hats just keep getting funnier every year, and more of them.”

As in years past, hat-wearing fun-lovers will gather at the town clock starting at 6:45 a.m. As the sun rises, lots of noise will be made to lure Minnie out of her tree trunk, with the hope that, unlike last year, she will predict an early spring.

Refreshments, including coffee, hot chocolate and cookies, will be provided by the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185 and a local business. In the case of inclement weather, festivities will take place under the portico of Union Community Bank, 101 E. “We love when people without those majors do it and get comfortable interacting with our campers,” added Paskoff. “It’s great hands-on experience for people who want hands-on experience, and they’re always supervised by professionals.”

Unpaid positions are also open to high school students age 14 and up who would like to volunteer as buddies at camp. Buddies act as positive role models for campers under the supervision of the group leader.

LMLRA Posts Gun Show Pianist To Perform Concert The Lancaster Muzzle Loading items, knives, collectibles, books, Rifle Association (LMLRA) will hold its 62nd annual gun show on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2 and 3, at the Lancaster Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

With an impressive 40-27 victory over Section One rival McCaskey on Friday, the Hempfield girls’ basketball team evened its record in the Lancaster-Lebanon League at 4-4.

The Black Knights (4-11 overall) were coming off back-to-back games where they had scored under 30 points. Yet with a stingy defense that allowed only singledigit scoring to the Red Tornado (0-17, 08 league), the Knights stayed on top in this one.

In the boys’ meet, the Black Knights managed to stay unbeaten with a 107-59 win. In the girls’ meet, the result was nearly flipped with Warwick winning 110-57. The boys’ team improved to 3-0 while the Hempfield girls fell to 0-3 in league competition.

In the boys’ 200-meter freestyle relay, John Sescilla, Josh Sahd, Charles Saylor

and Andre Fissella combined for a winning time of 1:45.61. The Knights also claimed the 200 medley relay with Fissella joining Aidan Turner, Shawn Splain and Nate Stuckey, who anchored this group to a win at 1:52.96.

“I think it was a big win for us,” said head coach Brittany Bertoli. “We were very excited going in. Manheim Township was a really tough meet [both boys and girls losing on January 8], so we were excited to swim well in this one.”

Stuckey had a big day, winning the 500 freestyle (actually 400 meters) in 4:40.17.

“Nate also placed second in the 200 free with 2:09.60,” said Bertoli.

Saylor won the 50 free in 26.43 seconds. The Black Knights compounded their points thanks to capturing the top three spots in the 50 free. Sescilla took second and Sahd was third.

“Saylor is one of our hard workers,” said Bertoli. “He’s a sprinter. He also anchors some of our relays. We use him a lot in freestyle events.”

Fissella won the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.75 and the 200 individual medley (2:19.06).

“Fissella is one of those swimmers who can swim just about everything,” commented the coach. “He can swim anything I need him for - any stroke, any distance.

He’ll swim them and be competitive at the same time.”

In the girls’ race, Maggie Shaffer claimed the only victory for Hempfield, taking the 200 IM in a time of 2:33.88. She was also second in the 100 butterfly (1:10.34), which was the same event where sophomore Rory Cantwell’s 1:18.70 earned the Knights a third-place finish.

In the 100 freestyle, Katelyn Wiglesworth (1:02.42) placed second.

Asked about the challenges of the girls’ squad and its winless record in the L-L League, Bertoli replied, “I think we have a lot of really strong girls’ teams in Section One. We’re a very young team with only one senior. We’re developing our younger

swimmers to compete.”

BOYS’ BASKETBALL In a tight Section One race, the Hempfield boys’ basketball team suffered a tough loss at McCaskey on Friday night, seeing the Red Tornado storm back in the second half for a 67-54 win. The win improved the Tornado’s record to 8-7 (6-2 league) while the Knights fell to 9-6 (4-4 league).

Only two points separated the teams at halftime with McCaskey leading 28-26.

Wyatt Gehman’s technical fall at 182 brought the Eagles to within a point at 23-22. However, the wins by Mathias and Dreyer regained momentum for the Knights with no time left for an Eagles comeback.

On Saturday, the Knights faced Dallastown and Governor Mifflin at the Keystone Tri-Match at Dallastown High School. The Knights came away with a 1-1 mark, defeating Mifflin 46-21 and losing 48-20 to the Wildcats. “Dallastown is the number one team in the district,� said Walizer. “We played two dual matches and had some kids go 2-0.

Luke Kramer, who’s a freshman won two matches at 120. Clay Gainer, another freshman at 126, went 2-0. Reagan Lefevre and Ian Edwards, a junior, also went 2-0.�

Despite Dallastown’s win, there were a few bright spots for the Knights. “We still beat them in a few weight classes,� said Walizer. “Luke had a big win for us. Reagan beat one of their better kids at 132.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has named Brenda Sieglitz to manage the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, one of Pennsylvania’s efforts to restore and protect its rivers and streams by planting 10 million trees by the end of 2025.

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership is a collaborative effort, coordinated by CBF, of national, regional, state, and local agencies, conservation organizations, watershed groups, conservancies, outdoors enthusiasts, businesses, and individuals dedicated to planting trees to improve the condition of Pennsylvania waters.

Trees clean and protect waterways, including drinking water sources, by filtering and absorbing polluted runoff, stabilizing stream banks, and improving soil quality. Simultaneously, they help cleanse the air of harmful contaminants and beautify communities.

As the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership manager, Sieglitz will help ensure the success of the Partnership by synchronizing creative strategies

BOWLING By splitting with McCaskey and Manheim Township this past week, the Black Knights’ record fell to 26-30, narrowly ahead of Township in the Section One standings. Cedar Crest (45-18) and Penn Manor (42-14) are battling for section supremacy.

On Tuesday, the Knights topped McCaskey 7-0 at Leisure Lanes as Ben Helman bowled two games over 240. The senior had a 244 in his first game and a 247 in his third, totaling 698 for the day.

Dutch Lanes was the site of the clash with Township on Friday. The Streaks won by a 7-0 score as Drew Jaquith led the team with 687 points. Jaquith’s top score was a 248 in his third game.

Helman again led Hempfield, this time knocking down the pins to the count of 629. Nick O’Neill was second with a 532 series and Caleb Mertz, with a 469, followed.

Working closely with CBF’s Making History Campaign team, Sieglitz will also serve as the key internal point person to ensure the Partnership activities are coordinated and communicated.

For more than a decade, Sieglitz worked in the private sector, where she has focused on project management, business development initiatives, sales, and marketing. During that time, she created and led multiple marketing and other events centered on public-private partnerships, including leading the development and launch for a biodegradable food service disposables line in the Mid-Atlantic region.

She resides in Mount Joy and is co-chair of Lancaster County Conservancy’s Riverlands Trail Festival. She has held leadership and mentor roles with the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, Team Sarcoma Keepin’ it Kevin, and the National Parks Service. She is also a certified Pennsylvania Master Naturalist.

Art Festival Receives Honor The art festival of Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation was recently rated the best Art Fair on the East Coast and one of the top 50 in the nation by ArtFairCalendar.com, a juried fine art fair and art shows listings website promoting attendance at art fairs, craft shows, and art festivals nationwide.

Close to 1,000 nominations were received online, and there were more than 2,000 voters.

Senior Ronnie Swantner knocked down a pair of triples and finished with eight points.

The Tornado offense was led by Brian McKenzie’s game-high 18 while Ajani Simmons (16) and Makai Ortiz-Gray (15) also contributed.

WRESTLING Thanks to a Chase Mathias victory on a 6-4 decision at the 195-pound match and a pin by Luke Dryere at 220, the Black Knights gained momentum just at the right time in Wednesday’s wrestling match with L-L League foe Cocalico. For good measure, the Knights also earned six points with Zach Bicevskis claiming the uncontested points in a Cocalico forfeit at 285. Hempfield won the match 38-22.

This win improved the Knights’ record to 4-2 while the Eagles fell to 2-4.

It was Hempfield’s next-to-last regular season dual meet. The team wraps that up on Wednesday against Warwick.

Head coach John Walizer spoke of the importance of the upcoming meet as Hempfield is currently 17th in the District Three Class-AAA power rankings. “Against Cocalico we had a few guys out,� Walizer stated. “We’re sitting right outside for getting into district duals. We have Warwick on Wednesday, which is the last day for the points to go in.�

The Cocalico match began with neither team sending out a wrestler in the two lightweight classes. And even the 120pound bout was a Cocalico forfeit with Luke Kramer being credited with the six team points.

Ella’s favorite subjects are precalculus and chemistry. She participates in the marching and jazz bands as well as the percussion ensemble/samba band and quiz bowl club. She is on the Mini-THON committee and is a member of the

Crusader Youth Club and Tri-M Music Honor Society. She participates in dance classes at the Cavod Academy of the Arts and has participated in County Band and Orchestra.

Matthew’s favorite subjects are calculus, chemistry and biology. He founded the school’s Autism Awareness Club and is a member of Student Council, National Honor Society and Future Medical Leaders of America. Matthew is on the bowling and tennis teams and captains the school soccer team, which voted him Offensive Player of the Year. He is also a 2018 Lancaster-Lebanon

League first-team soccer All-Star.

Sebastian’s favorite subjects are Western civilization and Advanced Placement English literature and composition. He enjoys playing in the jazz and marching bands and the pit orchestra. Sebastian participates in cross-country, track and field, and quiz bowl. He is an altar server and teaches eighth-grade religious education at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. Sebastian received a 2018 National Merit commendation.

Vivian’s favorite subjects are algebra 2 and world history. She enjoys field hockey and basketball and plays in the brass and string ensembles as well as the pit orchestra for the school musical. She is a member of the quiz bowl club and the Aevidum student suicide awareness club. Vivian is an altar server.

The students were able to construct entries as individuals or as groups in one of five categories: Documentary, Exhibit, Paper, Performance, or Website. The topic needed to relate to this year’s theme, “Triumph and Tragedy in History.” Chosen topics included everything from Eleanor Roosevelt to The Navajo Code Talkers of World War II.
