Takeout: It’s What’s For Dinner BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

hen the most recent shutdown was announced at the end of 2020, restaurant co-owner Mariella Volker turned to Facebook. Inspired by stories from college friends who now live in western Pennsylvania and Ohio, Volker created the “Lancaster County Take Out” Facebook group. “I just started it on a whim to see if this could be a way to help local businesses with takeout,” she explained. Volker was very clear from the group’s beginning that she did not want it to become a place where members denigrated anyone for staying open. Rather, the focus was on highlighting those who were in compliance with the orders. “I was looking for a way to give a leg up and provide community support for restaurants that were staying closed and providing takeout,” she said. Word of the group spread, and membership climbed. Two weeks into the new year, membership had surpassed 8,500 people, and posting was rapid. The group has become a crowdsourcer’s dream,

with pictures of takeout orders galore, along with requests for recommendations based on food preferences or geography. “I didn’t think it would become what it has,” Volker said. “I’m thrilled so many places have found support.”

“I just love how this has been such a positive group to work together and help local businesses and their employees,” Christine Cipoletti said. “I have tried new restaurants and some that I hadn’t known about. This is such a useful Facebook page.” In an informal poll, nearly 300 people said they have tried new restaurants as a result of the group, and about as many said they have a greater appreciation for their community. Almost 200 people said they have purchased more takeout than usual.

“This group led me to trying Gracie’s (on West Main in Leola) for the first time. In the last month we have gotten takeout at least five times, ordered two DIY breakfasts, and got our Christmas dinner there. It is our new favorite,” said Toni Hershey. “I have also really enjoyed sharing places we love with the group and making sure longtime favorites - like Sushi One - keep getting business.” “Thanks to this site, I’ve discovered a lot of new favorite restaurants that I have been driving by for years - Gracie’s and Three Sisters Park (in Ephrata) to name two,” Deb Gifford commented. “I just love how this has been such a positive group to work together and help local businesses and their employees,” Christine Cipoletti said. “I have tried new restaurants and some that I hadn’t known about. This is such a useful Facebook page.” See Takeout Group pg 7

“Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.

Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:

The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.

Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.

Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.

More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.

Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.

And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.

Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. People enjoy our shopping experience, in part because there’s no sales pressure ever. And we have over 200 verified stories of customer delight for your review. The Bleed Blue Challenge is a program of the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health) Blood Donor Center and is running from Jan. 4 to Friday, Jan. 29. During the initiative, participating police departments are encouraging members of their staffs and their communities to give blood at LG Health blood drives and at the center, 2104 Harrisburg Pike, Suite 202, Lancaster. Blood donor recruiter Anita Blizzard introduced the Bleed Blue Challenge with four PDs two years ago. It has grown to include 15 PDs this year: Manheim Township, East Hempfield, East Lampeter, Columbia Borough, Millersville Borough, Millersville University, Lancaster City, Lititz Borough, West Hempfield, Northwest Regional, Mount Joy Borough, Pequea Township, Quarryville Borough, Strasburg Borough, and Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J. A total of 80 units were received during the challenge in 2020, with Millersville University PD receiving credit and a plaque for the most donors. LG Health aims to keep 200 units in stock at all times, Blizzard noted. “What they did last year was really good. With more police stations involved, you’d assume that you’d do even better (this year),” she said.

Brubaker and other police officers planned to donate blood during the Bleed Blue Blood Drive on National Law Enforcement Day, Jan. 7. “Our first responders and police are great leaders in caring for our community. This effort is one more contribution they are willing to make,” said LG Health director of laboratory operations Brian Stambaugh. To participate in the Bleed Blue Challenge, individuals may make an appointment by visiting http://lancaster generalhealth.org/lgh/our -services/blood-bank/about -us/blood-drives.aspx or by calling 717-544-0170, option 1. Donors must be age 16 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health, have no history of hepatitis, and not have received tattoos

or body piercings within the last three months. Individuals should be well hydrated and have eaten a substantial amount within four hours before donating. Those who have had COVID-19 may donate if it has been at least 28 days since diagnosis and they have no symptoms. Blizzard noted that COVID-19 is not spread through blood, but the donor center wants to reduce risk of infecting staff members and other donors. All potential donors will receive a thermal screening and be asked a series of questions. Everyone must wear a mask. Masks will be provided for those who do not have them. Readers who have questions or concerns may call the blood donor center at 717544-0170, option 2.

The .918 Club will hold its regular monthly meeting in the Ken Kulakowsky Center for Letterpress and Book Arts, 117 Parkside Ave., Lancaster, on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. There is plenty of free parking. The .918 Club seeks to keep the craft of letterpress printing alive in Lancaster County through presenting demonstrations at the Heritage Press Museum to illustrate the history of printing and through providing a working letterpress job shop. During meetings, volunteers of the Heritage Press Museum share ideas and suggestions concerning the educational demonstrations and sign up to operate the print shop. Meetings also provide a place

for people to learn about letterpress printing or develop the skills to become volunteers in the print shop. The first 15 to 20 minutes of the Jan. 27 gathering will be devoted to a business meeting. A presentation or video on some aspect of printing history will be presented, time permitting. The meeting will conclude with a show and tell, and attendees are invited to bring something they printed or discovered that was printed by letterpress. Additionally, the club is seeking support through payment of dues and donations to the club. Because outside groups are currently not permitted to use the campus facilities at Thaddeus Stevens Col-

WRESTLING The Knights dominated Solanco and Muncy in Saturday’s (Jan. 9) duals at Hempfield, pinning a 56-12 victory over Solanco and dropping Muncy 51-15. Kamron Fickes registered a pin at the 138-pound bout to put the Knights ahead 9-6 in the Solanco match. The Golden Mules had taken a 6-3 lead with two close decisions following Seamus Mack’s 3-2 defeat of Weston Bare at 120. Reagan Lefevre dominated for a technical fall (17-2) at 145 and Dylan Bard pinned his opponent, giving the Knights a 20-6 lead. Jonah Gelbart’s third-period pin at 160 and Jobeth Plaza’s pin at 172 extended the advantage to 26 points. Russell Haines took the 189pound bout via pin and Caleb Mussmon did the same at 285 with a Solanco forfeit sandwiched in between. The two teams exchanged forfeits to close out the match. In improving their mark to 20, the Knights jumped out to a commanding lead over Muncy thanks to a 5-0 decision by Jorden Williams to start things off at 106 pounds, pins by Edwards and Gio Luciano as well as a Muncy forfeit. The Indians chipped away at

the lead with a major decision at the 132-pound bout and Fickes coming up short in a 4-2 decision at 138. Lefevre’s pin at 145 required only 1:39 to accomplish. Bard posted his pin with one second remaining in the first period of the 152 battle. Leading 33-7, Hempfield continued to dominate with pins by Plaza, Hoover and Mussmon. The Knights rolled the momentum into their first L-L League match of the year, defeating Conestoga Valley 55-12 on the road Tuesday. Bard opened with a pin as the match started at the 152-pound class. Gelbart needed only 49 seconds for his pin at 160. The Buckskins suffered eight falls in all as well as Luciano’s 135 major decision, which came at the 113 bout. Along with Bard and Gelbart, Hanes pinned Zander Rider at 189. Hoover pinned at 215 and Mussmon won a 10-3 decision at 285. Also taking their opponents to the mat were Mack (120), Edwards (126), Gainer at 132 and Lefebvre at 145. Hempfield improved to 3-0 (10 league). SWIMMING The Hempfield girls lost a tough one to archrival Manheim Township on Tuesday. The Blue Streaks topped the Knights 12461 at home. Hempfield highlights included a winning effort in the 100-yard butterfly as Maggie Shaffer posted a time of 1:00.93. Shaffer went on to win the 200-individual medley with a time of 2:18.63. Ella Root came through with a winning time of 1:08.89 in the 100 breaststroke. The Township boys’ team earned a 132-48 victory as Hempfield fell to 0-1. Ethan Richard had an outstanding day in the diving competition, compiling 231.45 points.

construction of pipelines to the school and to the public access site, as well as a storage tank at the school and a taphouse at the access site, will have additional costs. Solar panels will also need to be purchased and installed to keep the pump operational. Slaugh noted that similar projects in the area have been successful. Solar power will make the initial construction somewhat more complex, but it will be cheaper to operate and will require less maintenance over the long run. “We think it’s a huge advantage,” Slaugh commented. “It won’t require diesel fuel, and there’s less to break. Making things repairable is of huge importance.” So far, Slaugh has raised $6,000 for his project through word-of-mouth, and he submitted a proposal for support to a Rotary club in Seattle. At the request of his mother, Nancy, Slaugh is sharing the project with his hometown. Anyone who would like to learn more about Sirua Aulo Academy and the well-building project may visit https://siruaaulo .wedid.it/campaigns/8455, and for more information about Village Volunteers, readers may visit https://villagevolunteers.org. Business owners have commented to Volker that the group has made a positive impact on their businesses, especially for caterers who have been able to transition from preparing food for events to food for families. Although the orders now state that restaurants may partially open for indoor dining, Volker believes that takeout will be a major part of their business plans. “The landscape of the restaurant industry has changed, permanently,” she suggested. “Takeout’s not going anywhere. People are used to eating in the comfort of their homes now.” “Lancaster County Take Out” is a public group, and new members are always welcome.

environmental engineering from Clarkson University and then backpacked through part of Africa for two months. Slaugh eventually moved to Seattle, where he works on water and environmental issues. One of his projects involves the remediation of a site where a laundromat discharged chemicals into the soil. The chemicals then leached into groundwater, and Slaugh’s team will work with regulatory agencies to decide how to treat the water so it can safely enter a nearby river. Similar concepts will be part of the well-building project that Slaugh has signed on to direct at Sirua Aulo Academy. He and a team of experts from the United States and Kenya have designed a well and pipelines that will provide water to the 300 students and staff members at the academy as well as the 3,000 people who live in the surrounding Maasai community. Engineers Without Borders provides support when needed, and Slaugh’s fundraising efforts are under the auspices of Seattle-based Village Volunteers. “ We will break ground when we have the money,” Slaugh shared, noting that the project needs at least $24,000 for drilling the well and putting in a pump.
