Wh en she was in ninth grade at Columbia High School, Cindy Beaston watched the movie “Gettysburg” as part of a class assignment. Viewing the film set her on a trajectory that would influence the rest of her life.

“My mom and I rented the movie from Blockbuster, and I watched it over and over for a week straight,” Beaston recalled, noting that the assignment required her to memorize the names of characters. While viewing the film, she particularly became interested in the story of Confederate Gen. James Longstreet. “I needed to know more,” Beaston said.

Since then, Beaston has become a Civil War buff, and she’ll present two lectures this month, showcasing her knowledge of the war. She will speak about “U.S. Grant: Bulldog of the Union Army” at Hempfield recCenter, 950 Church St., Landisville, on Thursday, Jan. 26, and she’ll discuss “Sallie Ann: A Very Special Soldier” at Columbia Public Library, 24 S. Sixth St., on Monday, Jan. 30. Both lectures will begin at 6 p.m.

For the Grant lecture, Beaston will delve into the life of the man who became the 18th president of the United States. “Everybody’s heard the name Ulysses S. Grant, but everyone doesn’t know who he really was,” she said. Her talk will

cover his cadet days at West Point, the poverty he experienced after his achievements in the Mexican-American War and his rise to fame in the Civil War.

At the library, Beaston will share the accomplishments of Sallie Ann, a brindle bull terrier who played an important role with the 11th Pennsylvania infantry. “She went into every battle,” Beaston stated. “She knew the calls, knew the drills.” Beaston will bring her own brindle bull terrier, appropriately named Sallie Ann, to the talk.

Beaston works as a lifeguard and swim instructor at Hempfield Rec, but her free time is spent fulfilling her passion for history. She joined the Civil War Roundtable at Lititz Public Library, but when it disbanded, she started her own group in Columbia. The Gen. Welsh Post 118 Roundtable is named for a Columbia general and meets monthly at the Columbia Public Library. Beaston has presented numerous lectures on Columbia’s Civil War soldiers, and she is in the process of writing a historical fiction book about these heroes.

A few years ago, Beaston got to meet the actor Tom Berenger, who portrayed Gen. Longstreet in “Gettysburg.” She took the opportunity to tease him a bit about her passion, telling him, “I’m a Civil War historian, and it’s all your fault.”

In all seriousness, Beaston hopes her presentations will help people remember an important time in our country’s past. “I can see these events and these people in my mind, and I try to get people to imagine what it was like,” she said. “I feel like I have formed relationships with these soldiers, and I want to honor them.”

For the Hempfield Rec lecture, reservations are requested by calling 717-898-3102. For the lecture at the Columbia Public Library, reservations are not needed.

On Thursday, Jan. 26, LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., will host its first Regional History Colloquium of 2023, featuring a lecture provided by Andrew Diemer. The event will open its doors at 5 p.m., followed by Diemer’s lecture at 5:30 p.m.

Diemer is an author and a history professor at Towson University, and he will discuss his most recent

book, titled “Vigilance: The Life of William Still, Father of the Underground Railroad.” The book describes the life of William Still and the role that he played during the American Civil War. “(The book) focuses on his whole life, but heavily concentrates on the Underground Railroad,” said Diemer. “Looking at the Underground Railroad is essential; it shapes the rest of Still’s life.”

Still was born in New Jersey in 1821 to parents who had escaped slavery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Still’s father was a former slave who purchased his own freedom, and his mother was a former slave who fled the South. “Still’s family drove his involvement in the Underground Railroad and the pursuit of civil rights,” said Diemer.

Diemer was first intrigued by Still’s story while writing his first book, an academic study of free black communities struggling with citizenship rights. Diemer’s perception was that Still only aided with the freeing of slaves through the Underground Railroad and out of the public eye, but he was surprised to discover that Still often gave speeches and wrote public letters to support the cause. W hen Hempfield resident Craig Sylves’ son, Duncan, was young, he would ask his father the one question that every curious child asks: W hy? Craig tried giving his son all of the conventional responses, answering Duncan’s questions with “ Well, because I’m older than you,” and “Because I said so.” Young Duncan never relented, and Craig began referencing a fictitious book of his own design. Each time his inquisitive son would ask a question, Craig’s response was simply “It’s in the adult handbook.” See “Adult Handbook” pg 5

On Thursday, Jan. 19, local professor Rusty Banks will perform a concert titled “Creatures: Some Mythical” at The Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. and include several visual art projections created by Dan Zdilla and Andy Babin.

Banks began writing the music for the show on a classical guitar five years ago. Using surroundsound speakers, Banks started toying with the position of each note to play with the audience’s perception of space and sound. The resulting piece features guitar melodies that shift from one end of the room to the other in an attempt to blur the

lines between reality and imagination. The theme of the show follows its methods closely. Each movement depicts a different creature that is surrounded in lore; some of the creatures are real and some are fictitious.

“It started out with cryptids, and then I started adding real creatures that just have mythical qualities,” said Banks. “They’re all mythical in some way. The show splits the difference between the real and the mythical.”

Do’s

Don’ts Of Healthy Weight Loss

Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote long-term health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese.

Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results, and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.

DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting

and metabolizing protein, so a highprotein diet can help to shed up to 80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.

DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% of your total body weight can produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.

DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.

DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including

some all-natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.

DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise boosts metabolism, benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.

DON’T go shopping while hungry. If you do, you may make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.

DO speak with a doctor if you are comparing diet and exercise plans. A health care professional can indicate if a particular diet or fitness routine is acceptable for your age, goals and current health status.

DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets involve some sort of calorie-counting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing or tracking the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.

DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which can derail weight loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods. Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some timetested techniques.

The “adult handbook” became a running joke in the Sylves family, but as Duncan grew closer to adulthood, Craig’s mother-in-law told him that he’d better write this book he had been talking about for years before Duncan graduated high school. So Craig did.

“I sat down and thought, ‘What if I’m not here when he’s older?’ I tried to think of things that I wanted to leave with him,” Craig said. Craig began writing down everything he could think of and compiled a comprehensive guide that he would leave for Duncan, and thus the adult handbook that Craig referenced for so many years finally became real.

Craig titled the book “Adult Handbook: Lessons of a Father for His Favorite Son,” and gifted it to Duncan on his 18th birthday. Craig calls Duncan, who’s his only son, his

Concert

favorite son, and Duncan refers to Craig as his favorite father. The book revolves around 10 core ideas, but Craig noted that the first three are the most important: feed your body, feed your mind and feed your soul.

Craig has always been involved with athletics and health practices, bringing about the first point. “Your body is what gets you to and from. It’s important to take care of it,” Craig said. In his second point of the book, Craig instructs the reader to read and study in order to feed the mind. “The only difference between yourself now and yourself a year from now is the books you read and the people you meet,” Craig said.

The third key point in the book advises the reader to feed the soul, a concept that Craig thought of while attending Elizabethtown College. By the time that Craig graduated in

frompg 3

The first movement is named after the hoop snake, a rare creature that Banks remembers hearing about while growing up in rural Alabama.

According to those who claim to have seen it in person, the hoop snake is a reptile that travels by biting its own tail and rolling down hills like a wheel. Banks mimics the behavior of the hoop snake in his movement by using an echo effect while playing the guitar so that each note is repeated. “Much like the tale of the hoop snake, this music in the piece seems to chase itself,” Banks said.

The concert will comprise six movements, each named after a different creature that will be visually repre-

sented with a collage made by Dan Zdilla. For example, one of the movements is named after the hellbendera very rare but very real salamander. According to folklore, the hellbender protects fish from fishermen by covering fishing hooks with slime so that fish won’t bite them. The accompanying collage portrays the hellbender protecting a pond full of fish.

Banks and Zdilla collaborated on the musical and visual aspects of the show and enlisted Babin to project the collages onto the stage during the performance. Banks has worked with both Zdilla and Babin on other projects in the past and is an adjunct professor at Millersville University, where he

1973, he had thoroughly studied the Bible and other religious texts but never found all of the answers he was looking for. Craig embarked on his own quest to find these answers, which constitute the bulk of his book’s third point. “Think of your body as a trinity,” Craig said. “The spirit is the life, the mind is the architect and your body is the result.”

The rest of the book conveys general tips for pursuing a good life such as setting goals, working hard, serving others and learning to relax and enjoy yourself. “Everything is about direction,” Craig said. “We’re only here for the blink of an eye; make sure you learn why you’re here and do the right things.”

Although Craig printed and bound the book in order to give it to Duncan on his 18th birthday, it was never officially published until this year. On Duncan’s 38th birthday, Craig took Duncan and his granddaughter out to dinner and surprise him with the published book. “I think the book accomplished its goal,” Craig said. “I wanted to pass along what I’ve learned over the years, and now he can pass it along to my granddaughter.”

“Adult Handbook” is available on www.amazon.com.

teaches guitar and virtual instruments.

“One thing I hope to do with the show is to make the audience question the space they’re sitting in and make it seem like things are happening that aren’t possible,” said Banks.

“I want it to feel like the audience is taking a journey into those collages and meeting those creatures.”

“Still doesn’t place himself in the front of the stories that he tells,” said Diemer. “He wrote an enormous book later in his life that highlighted the fugitive slaves themselves, instead of those such as himself who helped them.”

Although the nature of Still’s work is different from that of Harriet Tubman, who escaped slavery herself and physically helped to free slaves in the

South, it was just as significant, Diemer noted. Still built networks of activists and developed their communication channels, which proved to be instrumental in the struggle.

“The fight against slavery and the various forms that it takes are of particular interest to me,” Diemer said. “My book shows how expansive this struggle is.” Still was primarily

focused on freeing slaves, but he helped with a variety of other things such as recruiting soldiers for the Union and helping people find work after the war. Still was heavily involved with desegregation movements and fought for black Americans’ right to vote.

“One important thing to take away from Still’s life is the importance of telling stories,” Diemer said. “Not only did he help fugitive slaves, but when the time came to tell their stories, he made sure the story was told in a way that gave justice to them.”

The lecture will be free and open to the public in person and streamed online via Zoom. To register to attend in person, call 717-392-4633. To attend virtually, visit https:// tinyurl.com/stilllecture.

Knights Top McCaskey after Loss to Comets

Coming out of the locker room for the second half of Tuesday night’s Section One game at McCaskey, the Black Knights used a full-court press to throw the Red Tornado off their game. The result was a 14-2 run in the third quarter, leading Hempfield (6-7, 1-3 league) to a 49-36 triumph.

“It was our defense in the second half,” said head coach Kendra Merrifield. “We had a couple of people in foul trouble, so we pulled back.

“It was definitely being able to use our full-court press,” added the coach.

“I think we forced them into quick shots. They were able to make some buckets in the first half with the halfcourt press. Our full court stymied what they wanted to do offensively.”

Sophia Ott led all scorers with 16 points. Autumn Cook poured in 13 points.

“Autumn has been running the point,” Merrifield explained. “She is fulfilling expectations, being the vocal leader and leading the charge. She is usually on the other team’s best guard.”

Fellow senior Lauren Moffatt also reached double figures, scoring 10 points.

“The three of them are coming into the season with the most varsity experience,” Merrifield said of Cook, Moffatt, and Ott. “Coming into this year we had kids who hadn’t played on the varsity court. We’re working on executing better.

“We’re improving on rebounding,” she added. “We do allow one too many second-

chance opportunities, but we’re working on that in practice.”

Penn Manor inched ahead in the fourth quarter of the Section One game at Hempfield on Friday, January 6, claiming a 48-40 victory. With Hempfield trailing by only three points heading into the final period, the Comets, led by Izzy Kligge’s 16point effort, went on a 21-16 run.

Ott, with three triples, and Moffatt led Hempfield with 13 points each. Nevaeh Ramirezz scored seven.

SWIMMING

The boys’ and girls’ swim teams both posted a victory over Cedar Crest on Tuesday, January 9 as both squads improved to 5-0 in L-L League meets. The girls’ team won 119-51 while the boys posted a 127-43 victory.

“It’s the point in the season where teams start to hit their stride,” Hempfield head coach Casey Lear said. “We had some good swims from both teams.

“We have a good super deep team with speed and good coverage in all of our events,” Lear said of the girls’ squad. “We have 22 girls and just about every one of them has a place they fit perfectly. They will score in just about all of their events.”

Helping with the scoring were the likes of Lillian Farmer, Anna Koger, Maya Trowbridge, and Isabelle Heisey

who not only teamed up for a firstplace finish in 2:01.40 for the 200yard medley relay, but Koger and Heisey went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle while Koger claimed the 100 butterfly at 1:04.43.

Winning both the 200- and 500free events was Carol Fabian with respective times of 2:05.62 and 5:37.88. Lucy Bishop, who took second in the 100 fly (1:08.29) was second in the 500 free (6:05.77).

Carol Fabian’s 2:05.62 was tops in the 200 free as was her time of 5:37.88 in the 500 free.

Returning junior Micah Wigleworth won the 100 free (57.92) with Heisey (1:02.59) placing second. Emily Taylor (2:24.09) won the 200 IM with Caroline Schweigert (2:25.82) a close second.

Schweigert, Bishop, Taylor and Mayer claimed the 200 free relay (1:52.55) whereas 100 backstroke winner Farmer (1:02.44) Koger, Wiglesworth and Fabian put together a winning time of 4:01.84 in the 400 free relay. Taylor took second (1:14.94) in the 100 breaststroke.

In the boys’ relays, Toby Marco, Ryan Taylor, Andrew Gates, and Jack Root won the 200 free relay in 1:34.52 while Marco, Gates and Root teamed up with Kiran George for a first-place time of 1:44.12 in

the 200 medley relay.

“Kiran George has really stepped it up this year,” said Lear. “Every single one of them has.

“They just keep getting better and better,” continued the coach. “Toby Marco swam really well. He is usually in the 100 fly, and I put him in the 100 free. Second in both the 100 free and 50 free. He had really good swims and dropped time.”

Taylor, who also claimed the 200 free (1:54.89) won the 100 free in 50.77 seconds while Root won the 50 free in 22.72 and placed second (1:03.68) in the 100 breaststroke.

Taylor anchored teammates Ivan Vitko, Will Russell and Ardan McHugh for a top spot at 3:30.35 in the 400 relay. McHugh took second (5:25.74) in the 500 free while Russell took third in the 200 IM (2:12.91) behind second-place finisher Jace Colino (2:09.59).

Troyer and McCaskey’s Jonathan Byrd tied for the game’s top scoring honors - 26 points each. Calabretta hit a pair of treys on a 17-point night while Hester drained three treys and finished with 13. Lawrence and Pena both scored eight points.
