JoAbrom has been teaching music for over 30 years.

Abrom’s journey in the worlds of both music and music education has taken the Stroudsburg native across the country and to Lancaster County, where she’s spent the past 25 years teaching the community’s future Broadway stars and aspiring church choir singers alike.

Abrom joined the singing group Re-Creation USA immediately after high school and performed across the United States for two years. Upon leaving Re-Creation, Abrom attended Susquehanna University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in music with a concentration in voice. After graduating from Susquehanna University, she attended Arizona State University and earned a master’s degree in vocal performance and pedagogy, the method and practice of teaching. Abrom began teaching in

Arizona at the age of 22 while she earned her master’s degree.

Abrom briefly lived and taught in New Jersey before finally moving to Lancaster in 1998 when her husband was hired as Lafayette Elementary School’s principal. Since the beginning of her teaching career, Abrom has continued her own education via conferences and other methods of exploring the art of singing. “I’m always in learning mode and trying to find new techniques,” said Abrom. “I want to bring the most current methods to my students.”

Abrom currently teaches at Sight & Sound’s conservatory in Ronks in addition to teaching private lessons through Abrom Vocal Studio, located just off Harrisburg Pike in Hempfield School District, and she worked as the Fulton Theatre’s music director for five years. Abrom’s students range from preschoolers to senior citizens, and

many of her students are performers in local productions at Sight & Sound, Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre and Fulton Theatre. Abrom also teaches actors in school plays, singers in local bands, students looking to study classical theater in college and those who simply wish to sing in their church choir. “There’s a wealth of musical experiences for people to take part of in (Lancaster),” said Abrom. “It’s so exciting because everyone comes to lessons for a different reason.”

In 2020, Abrom wrote “College Audition Success! A Survival Guide For Musical Theatre and Voice Majors,” a book detailing key elements of the audition process and how to prepare for it. Abrom’s book is available for purchase on www.Amazon.com. “Every lesson is different and every voice is unique,” said Abrom. “I love taking a singer and helping them to grow and to be the best that they can be.”

The Costume Shop at Millersville University, 164 W. Cottage Ave., began as a project of Millersville University to acquire a collection of theatrical costumes to be rented by the public. Over the years, the collection has grown extensively and has been used by members of the community for anything from school plays to costume parties.

The Costume Shop’s collection primarily served as a wardrobe for Millersville University’s theater department to use in performances.

In 1982, Jean Loeb of Lancaster donated a large collection of clothing, which she had acquired from a costuming company in Philadelphia. The company, called Wass & Son, outfitted thousands of people performing in plays and attending costume parties throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, meaning that each piece of the donation was made from authentic, vintage materials. Loeb kept the collection at a warehouse in Columbia until she donated it to The Costume Shop, greatly expanding Millersville’s previously modest collection.

The Costume Shop aims to make its collection accessible to people with a range of costuming needs. The shop has rented its inventory out to children who need a historically accurate costume for school projects, high school and college theater actors, and couples that See Costume Shop pg 2

Kaufhold has been involved with The Costume Shop since 1984 and has watched the collection grow as it has acquired pieces from local stores and theaters. Kaufhold graduated from Hempfield High School in 1977 and wore pieces from Loeb’s collection as a dancer in the school’s production of “Annie Get Your Gun.”

Kaufhold earned an undergraduate degree in dance from American University and a master’s degree in design and dance from George Washington University. “I had no idea the costuming world was so huge when I started,” said Kaufhold. “I’ve always been involved with shows, but (The Costume Shop) felt like home in a way.”

The Costume Shop’s collection now includes over 30,000 items, and Millersville University hopes to move it to a new location to make space for its size in the coming year. The Costume Shop is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m. To make an appointment outside of its regular hours, call 717871-5653.

Alisa Sholly, who has participated in No Longer Alone Ministries family support group meetings for about a decade is grateful for the experience. “As the name says, I no longer feel

alone in knowing how to deal with mental health concerns involving loved ones,” said Sholly. “I receive valuable information on mental health topics, a listening ear from others that can understand, and prayer.”

Michele Sipel, director of InHome Services with Landis at Home a division of Landis Communities, is well attuned with the mission of the support group, which meets monthly at Landis Homes. Sipel serves as a liaison for the group, which provides a safe place to open up for those who have a loved one living with mental illness. “It’s a different world, and unless you live it, you don’t know (what it’s like),” said Sipel. “It’s one of those subjects where there’s a lot of stigma, but it is so important.”

Meetings are held on the fourth Sunday of each month. The next support group meeting will be held via Zoom on

Sunday, Jan. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. The January meeting will include a video by Dr. Matthew Stanford, PhD, followed by discussion.

The support group was an offshoot of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), which functioned in Lancaster from 1991 to 2019. When NLAM closed its doors, a peer support group and the family support group overseen by the ministries were transferred to local entities. The peer support group, called Paths to Discovery, became part of Faith Friendship Ministries, and the family support group transferred to Landis, where several of the founding members live.

Landis offered personnel with the necessary expertise to help organize the group as well. Sipel noted that Evon Bergey, vice president of community initiatives with Landis Homes, is from a behavioral health background and added that she and other organizers work with

Bob Musser, a licensed social worker who worked with NLAM, to plan meetings, line up speakers, and facilitate meetings. The group began meeting at Landis Homes in January of 2020. After the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, the group met virtually.

In 2023, January, February, and March meetings will be held via Zoom so that inclement weather will not be a deterrent. The group plans to meet virtually once each quarter so that those who cannot come to Landis Homes may attend.

Among the past topics that were covered at meetings are innovations in treatment, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, overcoming grief, mental health and the Bible, and bringing healing to senior care.

Sipel said the group provides an atmosphere of caring and acceptance. “You get to know each other, so people feel comfortable being vulnerable. It is very therapeutic to

Avoid going outside until snow and ice are removed from walkways and parking lots, especially after it gets dark. Once the sun sets, even if a path has been cleared, refreezing is more likely to occur. If you do need to leave the house, making sure that you have a pair of shoes with non-skid soles greatly decreases your chance of slipping on ice or wet pavement. Any footwear that provides significant traction will make a winter stroll much safer.

If you use a cane, ensure that it is equipped with a rubber tip that has been recently replaced and that has not been worn smooth. Even if a walkway is cleared, remain wary of rock salt that may have been applied to the ground; it could result in a loss of traction for those who use a walker as the wheels are more likely to skid on the substance.

“Slipping and falling on ice hazards is one of the biggest issues during the wintertime,” said Bobbi-Jo Casseday, vice president of environmental services at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. in Columbia. “(St. Anne’s) makes

sure we keep our walkways clear and that residents watch out for re-freezing and ice patches.”

Another important practice during the winter months is to ensure you are stocked with the necessary supplies in case you are unable to leave your home. A winter storm may also prevent meals and prescriptions from being delivered. Keep your kitchen stocked with enough food and water to last for at least one week and make sure you have nonperishable food that does not require cooking or refrigeration in the event that you lose power. Keeping your medicine cabinet full of needed prescriptions prior to a storm is also good practice;

try to have prescriptions filled ahead of time if your area is expecting harsh weather.

Those who drive should stock their cars with basic emergency supplies for the winter. In case of emergency, a car should have a first aid kit, blankets, warm winter clothing, a windshield scraper, a shovel and a flashlight.

Don’t forget to check on your neighbors, relatives and friends. Aside from the physical dangers of the winter, inclement weather and limited travel can mean many seniors don’t receive as many visitors as usual. Practicing safety measures and checking in on others in the community can make this time of year safer for everyone.

be able to speak about what you’re going through with others who have lived it and understand.”

Sholly noted that NLAM has provided her with optimism. “It is a place to find hope when things seem hopeless,” she said. “I encourage anyone who is struggling or knows someone that is struggling with mental health issues to attend. It has been a Godsend for me and my family.”

To register for the January Zoom meeting, contact 717-381-3599 or jalbright@landis.org by noon on Friday, Jan. 20.

The First Lancaster Accordion Group (FLAG) will meet on Sunday, Jan. 15, at Zion Church of Millersville, 317 N. George St., Millersville, from 2 to 4 p.m. Accordion players,

music enthusiasts, and other interested parties are invited to attend.

Knights Close 2022 With CD East Victory

The Hempfield boys’ basketball team closed out the calendar year of 2022 with a Friday night victory over nonleague foe Central Dauphin East.

Playing on their home court in the December 30 contest, the Black Knights improved to 7-2 with a 65-59 victory over the Panthers. The Knights’ dominant fourth quarter helped them regain the lead they had relinquished prior to halftime.

The Knights, who drilled eight three-point baskets in the game, took an eight-point lead into the second quarter. The Panthers turned that into a three-point deficit for Hempfield by halftime and five points heading into the final stanza.

Returning Hempfield senior guard Miguel Pena scorched four of those threepoint buckets and led all scorers with his 26 points on the night. Fellow senior Kamyn Lawrence added 12 points to go with Nick Deeg’s eight points. Both Ben Troyer and

Chase Calabretta finished with seven points, including a trey for Troyer.

The boys’ basketball team was coming off a split of its two previous games - a 56-32 loss at home to Wilson on December 28 and a 64-25 thumping of Elizabethtown the previous day.

Troyer, Pena and Michael Hester each drilled a pair of treys in the E-town game with Troyer compiling 14 points on the night and Hester scoring 12. Pena and Calabretta each finished with eight points.

In the loss to Wilson, the Bulldogs’ 20-8 run in the third quarter was the momentum swing for the visitors. The Bulldogs got a game-high 19 points from Cleveland Harding.

Pena and Calabretta each scored seven for the Knights.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Coming off a split of their games at the Lancaster Catholic Holiday Tournament on December 27-28, the Black Knights visited Red Lion on Tuesday, January 3, in nonleague girls’ basketball action.

The Knights kept pace with

the Lions but came up short 45-39. Hempfield fell to 5-6.

In each of the opening periods the Lions outscored Hempfield 11-8, building a six-point halftime lead. The home team held on for that margin of victory.

Sophia Ott led Hempfield with 17 points while Lauren Moffatt poured in 13, including the team’s lone threepoint basket of the game. Sophomore Nevaeh Ramirez scored five on the night.

Prior to New Year’s Day, the Knights opened the Holiday Tournament at Catholic with a 50-41 victory over Holy Redeemer on Tuesday, December 27. Hempfield jumped out to a commanding lead with 22 first-period points.

Ott led all scorers with 21 points, including a pair of treys. Moffatt poured in 13 points while Ramirez and senior Autumn Cook scored eight points each.

Hempfield fell to Lancaster Catholic the following night by a 66-35 score. Mary Bolesky and Rylee Kraft scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, for the Crusaders. Ott led the Knights with 10 points.

WRESTLING

Prior to the winter break, the Hempfield wrestling team won a dominant Section One bout over Penn Manor on December 22. The Knights pinned a 51-13 victory at home over the Comets, improving to 3-0 in the L-L League (5-1 overall).

The Knights’ 27-0 lead came on two Comet forfeits plus pins by Kamron Fickes and Kain Hayden and an 8-4 decision at the 172-pound weight class by Vincent Hernandez.

Hempfield’s J.J. Plaza came up short in a close 6-4 decision at 189 only to have teammates Nicky Bruno and Caleb Mussmon register first-period pins in their respective 215and 285-pound bouts.

Junior Sutton Schopf’s pin at 121 and Zy McCain-Murray’s 10-4 decision at 133 were sandwiched around another close Penn Manor decisionTravis Clawson’s 8-6 victory over Seamus Mack at 127.

Mack opened the match on Wednesday, January 4 with a

first-period pin at133 as the Knights took on Section One rival Warwick on the road. Two more pins and two major decisions helped Hempfield post a 47-24 victory over the Warriors.

Edwards came through with a 15-4 major in the 145pound class and Hernandez claimed his by a 12-0 margin at 160.

Plaza’s pin at 189 plus a pair of Warwick forfeits helped Hempfield build a 32-18 advantage. Freshman Charlie William pinned 2:48 into the 107-pound bout. Another W arwick forfeit and Noah Caslow’s 9-7 decision for the Knights at 127 gave Hempfield the winning margin.

BOWLING

Hempfield edged Ephrata in L-L League bowling on Tuesday, January 3 at Dutch Lanes.

Nathan Keeley and Priest McKenzie led the Black Knights, who improved to 2418 with the 5-2 defeat of the Mountaineers.

Keely’s best game was his third of the day where he rolled a 224. He finished with a 617 total while McKenzie was only one pin behind at 616 on the day. McKenzie opened with a 245 while Derick Keller (600) had a 227 in his second game.

Jake Buckwalter, who has carried the best per-game average for the Mountaineers, led his squad with a 659 tally.

Christmas Tree Recycling Program Posted

County residents may dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Trees may be dropped off between dawn and dusk through Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a limit of three trees per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations.

There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the Lancaster County Park System. A portion of the funds

are used to purchase emerald ash borer protection for about 26 ash trees in Lancaster County Central Park and Buchmiller County Park.

According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Jan. 4, near the tree dropoff site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home.

For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, visit www.lancastercountyparks.org.

panel of industry professionals.
