Hershey Area Women’s Connection

School Holds Successful Food Drive

will present the “A New Outlook for the New Year” Brunch Buffet at Hershey Italian Lodge, 128 Hillcrest Road, Hershey, on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019, from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m. All ladies are invited to attend. The group is affiliated with Christian Women’s Clubs of America. The feature will be presented by Kathleen Forney, a fused glass artist and teacher from Elizabethtown. Jeremy and Lisa Shaver, a piano duo from Middletown, will perform. “An Anchor for Life” will be presented by speaker Carol LeBeau, a former television news anchor and reporter from Charleston, W.Va. During the annual food drive at the Palmyra Area Middle School, students in grades six through eight and faculty members collected more than 2,600 cans and food items, which amounted to over 2,000 pounds of food. The school also raised more than $875 to be donated to the Caring Cupboard in Palmyra. On Dec. 17, students from the middle school and volunteers from the Caring Cupboard in Palmyra loaded four trucks with the donations. The members of the sixthgrade Grizzly team donated the largest number of cans and will receive a pizza party in January. The annual food drive event is organized and coordinated by special education teachers Amy Hines and Kerri Mills.

Playhouse To Celebrate 20th Anniversary To highlight and celebrate its 20th season, Hershey Area Playhouse, Sand Hill Road and Cherry Drive, will host a 20th Anniversary Cabaret Night on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, beginning at 7 p.m. The evening will begin with a light reception, during which guests will be able to bid on silent auction items, and will include a musical program featuring local residents who have performed on the Hershey Area Playhouse stages. Eighth-Grader Wins Spelling Bee

3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will hold a First Day Hike on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, at 9 a.m. Individuals should meet at the center. Preregistration is required. Hershey Public Library will offer a variety of programs for children, including Play Day for Families and Lego Club. Programs will also be available for middle to high school-age youths.

Eighth-grader Andrew Seacord won his second Lower Dauphin Middle School spelling bee on Nov. 30. In the final round, he correctly spelled “dictionary” before his championship word, “permissive.” Andrew needed three rounds to top Faith Fausnight. Third place was settled between sixth-graders Lucius Cabeza and Aaron Espenshade in two rounds, with Lucius prevailing. Andrew is the son of Susan Seacord and Steven Seacord. A distinguished

honor roll student, Andrew hopes to become a clinical geneticist when he grows up. Faith is the daughter of Jody Fausnight and Tracy Fausnight. A sixthgrader, she hopes to be a pediatric allergist someday. The school’s top four finishers will now have an opportunity to take the WITF Central Pennsylvania Spelling Bee’s semifinal written test. Depending on their scores, they may advance to the grand championship oral spelling bee this spring.

The Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Ave., Hershey, will offer a variety of programs for young children with their families and caregivers and for middle to high school-age youths. Winter/spring sessions will begin in the first week in January. For the very young, the library will offer Books and Babies; 1, 2, Whee!; Sensory 1, 2, Whee! for young children who prefer a quieter story time environment; and Play Day for Families. Each cycle of programs will include two weeks of registration and five weeks of programming. Lego Club, for children age 6 and older, will meet on the first Wednesday of every month at 4 p.m. until May. DINNER DANCE

601 S. Harrisburg St., Oberlin, will host a winter dinner dance on Friday, Jan. 11, 2019, in the social hall. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with dinner at 7:30 p.m. Music will be provided by Srpski Sinovi of Pittsburgh. Tickets will be discounted for children ages 6 to 15. Library Posts Programs For Children, Youths

4 p.m. beginning on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019. Middle school-age youths in grade six and up may attend the Wednesday after-school program called In the M i d dle. From 3 to 4:30 p.m., the Hershey Public Library offers weekly programs centered on a theme. Games, art activities, and Creativity and Writing are offered. An Adulting program occurs once per month for high schoolage youths. The goal is for attendees to learn important life skills, with topics ranging from dining etiquette to apartment searching and job hunting. Dates and time vary.
