The Mortel High Hopes for Haiti Foundation will host a virtual cooking class titled “Mangia With Mariella: Cooking With Love to Bring Hope to Haiti” on Sunday, Jan. 10, at 4 p.m. Via Zoom, chef and owner Mariella Amato from Mangia Mangia Italian Grill in Hershey will teach viewers how to make an authentic three-course Italian meal.

The event will raise money to feed children in Haiti. The Mortel High Hopes for Haiti Foundation has been feeding and educating children in need in Haiti since 2001.

McManus To Speak At Roundtable Meeting The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will hold its first meeting of 2021 via Zoom on Thursday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m. Guest speaker John C. McManus will give a presentation about his book “The Dead and Those About to Die: D-Day: The Big Red One at Omaha Beach.”

McManus is an award-winning professor, author, and military historian, and he is a leading expert on the history of the American combat experience. He has published 13 books on a variety of American military history topics, including “Fire and Fortitude:

Merry Christmas, everyone!

It’ll be here before we know it!

I am so excited! I never lost my awe for Christmas; it still makes me feel like a little kid.

I think a lot of that awe is due to my growing up in the Riverside Chapel. Christmas was extra special at Riverside Chapel when I was a kid. I remember every Christmas service we kids would get a big fat orange and a box of chocolates. We also used to make clear toy lollipops back in the kitchen; do any of you remember them? They were so good! I also remember gathering in a large circle, everyone holding hands, and then singing “Silent Night.”

And, of course, we always were told the true Christmas story, and it still always makes me feel full of love, peace, and hope.

Who Started This Thing Called Christmas?

A woman was Christmas shopping with her two children. After many hours of walking down row after row of toys and after hours of hearing both her children asking for everything they saw on those many shelves, the woman finally made it to the store elevator with her two children in hand.

She was feeling what so many of us feel during the holiday season time of the year - overwhelming pressure to find that perfect gift for every person on our shopping list; to go to every party and taste all the holiday food and treats; to make sure we don’t forget anyone on our card list; and to respond to everyone who sent us a card.

Finally the elevator doors opened revealing a crowd in the car. She pushed her way in and dragged her two kids and all her bags of stuff in with her. As the doors closed she couldn’t take it anymore and blurted out, “Whoever started this whole Christmas thing should be found, strung up, and shot.” From the back of the car, a quiet calm voice responded, “Don’t worry, we’ve already crucified Him.” The rest of the trip down was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop.

Christmas Candy Recipe Slow Cooker Christmas Candy Ingredients: 16-ounce jar unsalted peanuts 16-ounce jar salted peanuts 12-ounce bag semi-sweet chocolate chips 12-ounce bag milk chocolate chips 2 bags (10 ounces each) peanut butter chips 2 packages (1 pound each) vanilla candy coating Directions: 1. In 5- to 6-quart (approximately 5- to 6-liter) slow cooker, layer all ingredients starting from peanuts. Do not stir them together.

2. Cover the pot and cook on low-heat setting for 1 hour.

3. Open the lid and stir well to mix.

4. Close the lid again and cook on low-heat setting for a further 30 minutes, then open the lid and stir.

5. Turn off the slow cooker.

Spoon mixture onto wax paper or non-stick aluminum foil. Allow cooling completely.

The Hershey Area Playhouse will present a virtual “Holiday Card” featuring members of the community. The online performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 25, through Sunday, Dec. 27.

Local author Phil Jurus will share two of his original elf stories. The stories are “Santa’s Clauset” and “A Dickens of a Good Time.” Since 1996, Jurus has been writing “Stories of the Christmas Elves.”

In addition, Jake Nyguen will perform holiday classics on the guitar. The event will also include Kurt Dise reading “The Night Before Christmas.”

Families can access this holiday content with a set donation to benefit the Hershey Area Playhouse.

Royer’s Collects Holiday Cards For Veterans Through donations from its customers, Royer’s Flowers & Gifts presented some 2,500 holiday cards and coloring pages to the American Red Cross for distribution to area veterans.

Royer’s, which has participated in the Red Cross “Holidays

for Heroes” program for nearly a decade, collected the cards and coloring pages in each of its stores throughout November.

The items will be distributed to veterans at the Lebanon Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center and at area retirement facilities.

Dairy Holds Virtual Tour For Students Students had the opportunity to visit a dairy farm without leaving their home or school when American Dairy Association North East teamed up with farms in Pennsylvania and New York to offer free virtual farm tours.

Locally, Talview Dairy in Lebanon held a live virtual tour for students in prekindergarten through third grade on Nov. 18.

The tour was approximately 30 to 45 minutes in length.

Through the use of video technology, children were able to learn directly from dairy farmers where their food comes

from and how it is produced.

During the tour, Talview Dairy hosted more than 22,000 students in more than 1,600 classrooms that were not only located in central Pennsylvania, but in places as far away as California, Florida and Alberta, Canada.

American Dairy Association North East began working with local dairy farmers to bring their farms to the classroom in 2018.

Local Youth To Compete On Food Network Show When viewers tune in to this season’s “Kids Baking Championship” on Food Network, they will be able to root for a local youth who is taking part in the competition.

Beginning on Monday, Dec. 28, at 9 p.m., viewers will be able to watch Jonah Anderson, 12, of Harrisburg compete with 11 other young bakers on the show, which will be hosted by Valerie Bertinelli and Duff Goldman. The winner of the competition will receive $25,000, a spot in Food Network Magazine and the title of Kids Baking Champion.

Jonah, a homeschooled seventh-grader, applied for the show in December 2019 and traveled with his mother to California to record the episodes. “Last December I was watching one of the challenges and they were making volcano Bundt cakes and I said, ‘Mom, I can do just as good as some of those kids’, and she said I should apply, and now, here I am,” said

Jonah. “We had to fill out an application form and submit pictures and videos. It was a crazy long process.”

Jonah, who admits to being a fan of Food Network shows like “Chopped” and “Buddy Vs. Duff,” said his love of baking began only recently. “A couple years back, I was into art and it started to get a little boring and then I found baking,” he stated. “I love doing things with my hands, and it was kind of like the perfect thing I needed right then.”

Jonah said he loves baking all kinds of treats, from cookies and cakes to pies. “I really love to try ethnic foods like French pastries and experiment with flavors,” he shared.

While he is not able to reveal how he did on the show, Jonah did mention that it was challenging to cook while on camera. “I was super nervous. I could always tell the cameras were there,” he said, adding that he kept his appearance on the show a secret from friends and family members until recently.

This year’s 10-episode

season will feature new challenges for the competitors.

One challenge, celebrating Animal Planet’s “Puppy Bowl,” asks each baker to pair up with an adoptable puppy and to create a birthday cake that envisions the pet’s life after adoption.

Theater Plans New Year’s Eve Events Gamut Theatre Group has planned two events for New Year’s Eve, Thursday, Dec. 31. Both events will be presented virtually.

The organization’s Popcorn Hat Players Children’s Theatre will hold its 28th annual New Year’s Eve party for children, where participants will count down to noon instead of midnight. The event may be accessed starting at 10:55 a.m.

The party will feature the play “Aesop’s Fables,” an assortment of Aesop’s fables such as “The Cat Maiden,” “The Two Frogs” and “The Ant and the Grasshopper.” Viewers can expect to see current and past Popcorn Hat Players.

Following the Zoom performance, the audience and performers will count

down to noon.

The annual New Year’s Eve special event “Last Laughs of 2020 LIVE!” will be presented over Zoom and will consist of shortand long-form improvisation by the entire TMI Improv team. The Zoom event will open at 8:45 p.m. with a live chat with the TMI players. The performance will start at 9 p.m. and conclude at 10 p.m. Suggestions from the audience will guide the players.
