The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry (L&I) recently donated nearly 600 stuffed toys that passed safety inspections to the 32nd annual Holiday Wish program, Dauphin County Systems of Care, and New Hope Ministries gift drives this holiday season. The effort is the result of a partnership with the Holiday Wish program.

Under state law, L&I must inspect all new stuffed toy samples for contents, choking hazards, and general safety.

Toys that pass inspection get a registration number, which is on every stuffed toy sold in the state. Because of this process, the department accumulates hundreds of toy samples each year. In the past five years, L&I has donated nearly 3,200 toys to holiday gift drives.

The Holiday Wish program was started in 1989 by a small group of employees from the Department of Human Services.

Over the years, it has grown to include hundreds of employees in numerous departments.

Winter Theater Camp Scheduled This December, students in kindergarten through grade eight are invited to attend HCPAC’s Winter Theater Camp, The Snow Queen’s Revenge on Hercules. The camp will be held on the HCPAC campus, 1000 S.

Roundtable To Host Tank Crew Member

Stitt served on a total of three tanks that were lost to enemy action. During the Battle of the Bulge, the tank he was in was hit by an anti-tank shell, killing the commander and putting Stitt out of action with pieces of shrapnel in his head.

Stitt recovered from his wound and was transferred to a noncombat unit in England, where he remained until VE Day. Nearly 15 years after he was discharged from the military, Stitt was called to the ministry. After completing seminary, Stitt served as pastor of two Lutheran churches and for 10 years was assistant to the bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. He later served as pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church.

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will hold its next monthly meeting online via Zoom on Thursday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be tank crew member and Battle of the Bulge veteran Walter Stitt.

Stitt served as a loader for a Sherman tank crew in the 3rd Armored Division. He arrived at Omaha Beach in Normandy several weeks after D-Day and was part of the effort to push through France and Belgium and into Germany, where his armored unit was among the first to penetrate the Siegfried Line.

Stitt’s unit reached Germany in September 1944, where he was struck by a German tank shell that killed the tank commander and the gunner. As a loader in the tank, Stitt was sitting on the left side of the turret and experienced a leg wound. He said later that he was probably not killed because he happened to be reaching down for a shell when the tank was hit.

Michael Astfalk Jr., a member of Troop 594 in Middletown, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout this past summer.

Family, friends, and dignitaries gathered to mark the achievement at a Court of Honor in October.

Astfalk, a freshman honors student at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe and a 2021 Bishop McDevitt High School graduate, completed his Eagle project at his alma mater Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary School. Astfalk Michael Astfalk Jr. created a paved patio, a stone walkway, and four raised planting beds for the school’s outdoor classroom, the Nature Lab. Astfalk joined Pack 113 as a Tiger Scout in first grade. Recruitment efforts are currently underway for veterans interested in playing a critical role as volunteer mentors in Pennsylvania’s Veterans Treatment Court program.

Volunteer veteran mentors serve as role models and coaches for justice-involved veterans participating in Veterans Courts.

Veterans Treatment Courts assist veteran defendants who are struggling with addiction, mental illness, or co-occurring disorders and who come into contact with the criminal justice system. Using the drug court model, these courts combine treatment and personal accountability, with the goal of breaking the cycle of addiction and criminal behavior.

Barry Spengler (left), chief administrative officer, Royer’s Flowers & Gifts, presented a donation of holiday cards and coloring pages to Jonathan Glenn, regional program director, American Red Cross.

Continuing an annual tradition, Royer’s Flowers & Gifts recently presented several thousand holiday cards and coloring pages to the American Red Cross for distribution to area veterans.

Royer’s, which has participated in the American Red Cross’ “Holidays for Heroes” program for nearly a decade,

collected the cards from the public in each of its stores throughout November.

In addition, as part of a new program, Royer’s Flowers & Gifts donated a portion of the proceeds from the sale of two arrangements featuring plush animals - Kitten in a Basket and Puppy in a Basket - to area animal shelter and rescue efforts.

Geoff Royer (left), vice president of central operations, and Tom Royer, president and CEO, Royer’s Flowers & Gifts, has donated $100 each to 10 area animal shelters.

For the first awards, Royer’s has sent $100 checks to 10 area animal organizations: Humane Pennsylvania, serving Berks and Lancaster counties; Animal Rescue League of Berks County; Speranza Animal Rescue in Mechanicsburg; Castaway Critters and Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area in Dauphin County; Cumberland Valley

Scouts Collect Food For Pantry

Animal Shelter in Chambersburg; 2nd Chance 4 Life Rescue in Elizabethtown; Columbia Animal Shelter; Humane Society of Lebanon County; and York County SPCA. The Kitten in a Basket and Puppy in a Basket arrangements are available year-round.

Family-owned Royer’s has 16 stores in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties, including one Stephenson’s Flowers & Gifts location in Harrisburg.

Conor is the son of Steven Grubb and Amy Clark-Grubb.
