ommunity members are invited to kick off the holiday season and perhaps pick up some decorating tips at the Middletown Holiday Home Tour, set for Saturday, Dec. 9, from noon to 8 p.m. This year’s tour will feature 10 homes decorated for the season. The tour will begin at The Event Place, 11 S. Union St., Middletown, which will serve as the tour’s hospitality center. Participants can purchase a ticket for the tour between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Ticket holders will receive a wristband, which will allow them to enter the participating private homes, as well as a brochure with information about each tour site and a map of the tour route. Also featured at The Event Place will be a display by a local artist and an opportunity for tourgoers to win gift baskets filled with items donated by Middletown-area merchants and residents. “There are two new stops on the tour this year and the rest are old favorites,” said Carole Shanaman, coordinator of the tour planning committee. “Most of the homes are in the borough, which makes the tour semi-walkable. Two of the homes are on the outskirts of Middletown.” Homes on the tour are of various styles. “One of the new homes (on the tour) was built in 1939, and it is a Sears and Roebuck kit home,”

Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Middletown will present a live Nativity on the parish grounds, 360 E. Water St., Middletown, on Friday, Dec. 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the church parking lot, which will be transformed into Bethlehem, the place of Jesus’ birth. Guests will be guided by the three Wise Men as they visit the Bethlehem innkeeper, shepherds, live animals, and the Holy Family Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus. While waiting to begin their tour, guests may listen to Christmas music performed by the band Forgiven, enter a Scripture Walk, and receive a free chance to win a set of five stuffed Nativity animals. At the Children’s Nook, young attendees may color pictures from “The Little Star.” Children may also pet the live animals, which will
include bunnies, sheep, goats, a donkey, and a llama. After visiting the manger, guests may stop by the fire pit for complimentary s’mores while supplies last, and they may pet the live animals, visit the Bethlehem tents, and purchase a star-shaped soft pretzel or hot chocolate while supplies last. Guests may also visit the church and share prayer requests, which can be hung on the tree or placed in the prayer request box. Seven Sorrows parishioners will pray for attendees and their requests throughout the days leading to Christmas. Parking is free and available in the school lots. Overflow parking is available at Giant and along side streets. All visitors must go through the school’s door 4 to enter the queue. For more information, visit www.ssbvm.org/live-nativity.

Shanaman noted. “The other new (tour stop) is a three-story farmhouse in the borough built in the mid-1800s.” “One of the homes is a fan favorite,” Shanaman added. “It is a grand home, and they go over the top with decorations, and every time they are on the tour (the decorations) are different.” Those who like to make a
Jingle Jam, clothing and Community Singers plan food drive planned Lower Dauphin High School will Middle School, 251 Quarry Road, hold its annual Mini-THON Jingle Hummelstown on Saturday, Dec. 9. Jam 2-Miler run at Lower Dauphin The race will start at 10 a.m. on the middle school’s cross-country course, with registration taking place from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Walkups are welcome. There is a fee. The event will also include a silent auction as well as hot chocolate for sale. In conjunction with the Jingle Jam, the school’s Student Council will host a clothing and food drive starting at 8:30 a.m. Student Council members will be at the middle school to collect gently used and new clothes along with canned foods.

The Hummelstown Community Singers will present their annual Christmas program on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 3 p.m. Due to construction at Hummelstown United Church of Christ, the concert will be presented in the sanctuary at the Valley Baptist Church, 1190 N. Union St., Middletown. The ensemble, under the direction of Kate Bright, will perform a selection of holiday pieces. Admission is free, and tickets are not required. Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the program.
