He served as principal cellist of the Augusta (Georgia) Symphony and is known as the first person to be named associate conductor of that ensemble. Bruce received a Bachelor of Music from The Juilliard School of Music.

He received a Master of Music with an Artists Diploma in Cello from the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Susan has served on the piano faculties of the Cleveland Institute of Music and Augusta College in Georgia and the accompanying faculties of the Meadowmount School of Music and the Aspen Music School. She graduated as class valedictorian from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she received Bachelor of Music degrees in theory and piano. Susan earned a Master of Music in pedagogy from the University of South Carolina. She has also studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts and in New York. She maintains an active private studio, and her students have won competitions throughout the Midwest.

She is also a clinician and adjudicator.

As a classical artist, he has recorded with various artists. He has performed as a soloist with orchestras and as principal bassist with orchestras and chamber orchestras.

He has appeared at chamber music festivals throughout North America and Europe and is a founding member, bassist, and composer for the contemporary music group OPUS 21. Tom has taught at the Interlochen Arts Academy, Michigan State University, and Cleveland Institute of Music and has presented more than 100 master classes worldwide.

The concert is part of the church’s

The Michigan-based Tom Knific Quartet will present “The Great American Songbook Meets Brahms and Knific,” a concert featuring a mix of original, contemporary jazz works with a chamber music vibe, at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17, in the sanctuary at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey.

Members of the Tom Knific Quartet are Renata Artman Knific on violin, Bruce Uchimura on cello, Susan Wiersma Uchimura on piano, and Tom Knific on double bass. The quartet will present a selection of Brahms’ “Hungarian Dances” along with Bacharach’s “Say a Little Prayer,” a medley of Gershwin works, Godard’s “Berceuse” and more.

Renata’s international career began in London when she joined the English Chamber Orchestra at the age of 21. Tours of Europe, North and South America and Asia followed. She worked closely with conductors Daniel Barenboim, Simon Rattle, Edo De Waart and Christoph Eschenbach and recorded dozens of records. She has taught at the Encore School for Strings, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Interlochen Arts Academy, and the Lancut Festival in Poland.

Stites served at St. Mark’s with her musical talents and leadership for 38 years after joining the church staff in 1981.

Open Stage will present its 20th anniversary production of “A Christmas Carol” on select dates from Saturday, Nov. 23, to Sunday, Dec. 29. The production is based on Charles Dickens’ classic tale of the same name, which was first published in 1843. Dickens crafted the novella to capture the struggles he witnessed growing up in London during the Industrial Revolution when unregulated working conditions and widespread poverty left countless children on the streets.

The classic tale of morality and redemption follows the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, who receives visits from three spirits on Christmas Eve. Adapted by Open Stage producing artistic director Stuart Landon and marketing director Rachel Landon and directed by Chris Gibson, Open Stage’s reimagined production brings “A Christmas Carol” into a 21st-century context. Nicholas Hughes, a board emeritus and one of Open Stage’s most established artists since its founding in 1983, will celebrate 20 years of playing characters that are perhaps some of Dickens’ most famous.

Both the Fredericksburg and Jonestown offices are remaining at the current locations with the same providers and staff members, but the practice has a new name, UPMC Primary Care Fredericksburg.

LCCTC Schedules Fall Open House Lebanon County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC), 833 Metro Drive, Lebanon, will host a fall open house on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Open Stage of Harrisburg has slated two holiday productions, “Who’s Holiday!” and “A Christmas Carol.” “Who’s Holiday” will kick off Open Stage’s 34th season, “Metamorphosis,” which features stories of change, redemption, and metamorphosis. Open Stage is located at 25 N. Court St. on the street level of the Walnut Street Garage in downtown Harrisburg.

“Who’s Holiday!” by Matthew Lombardo will premiere in Open Stage’s new black box theater, the Studio Theater. Performances will take place on select dates from Saturday, Nov. 16, to Saturday, Dec. 28, with evening shows at 8 p.m. and matinees at 3 p.m.

The off-Broadway hit “Who’s Holiday!” is set in the land of Dr. Seuss and gives center stage to one of Seuss’ most well-known supporting characters: Cindy Lou Who, who observed the Grinch stealing her presents one Christmas. “Who’s Holiday!” is a onewoman show focused on the now grownup Cindy Lou in her trailer, minutes before her Christmas Eve party. PennDOT Plans Public Hearing PennDOT District 8-0 and the Federal Highway Administration will conduct a public hearing on the I-83 East Shore Section 2 Eisenhower Interchange Reconstruction Project Draft Environmental Assessment and Individual Section 4(f) Evaluation documents. The hearing will be part of a 45-day public comment period. The comment period will end on Tuesday, Dec. 17, and will include review and comment on the draft documents.

Gamut Theatre Slates Performances Gamut Theatre Group, 15 N. Fourth St., Harrisburg, will open its 27th season with its production of “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe,” based on the novel by C.S. Lewis. HAHS Slates Meeting Hummelstown Area Historical Society (HAHS) will feature Curt Weber as he makes a presentation on the life of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain on Monday, Nov. 18, at the History House, 32 W. Food Bank Receives KidCents Grant Artist To Host Holiday Show The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has been awarded a $30,000 KidCents Regional Grant from The Rite Aid Foundation. Funds will be used for the organization’s youth programs across the 27-county region, including school pantries, Kids Café sites and BackPack Plus Programs.

The KidCents Regional Grant Program, which provides grants of $15,000 to $30,000, funds specific out-of-school time programs focused on children’s nutrition, physical fitness and academic success. The KidCents program also annually supports a select group of more than 400 nonprofit, children-focused organizations that are committed to improving the health and well-being of children living in the communities Rite Aid serves, as well as national organizations focused on critical children’s issues, including The Fred Rogers Company, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Folds of Honor.

VAMC Creates New Program Lebanon VA Medical Center (VAMC) has partnered with the Lebanon County Court Administrator to develop a process to improve guardianship for certain veterans.

Guardianship is a legal process used when an individual is determined to be unable to care for their person or property.

This situation may be encountered in a medical setting during chronic or longterm illnesses, according to Sarah Primak, a licensed clinical social worker with Lebanon VAMC. The courts appoint a guardian to assist the individual, known as a ward, with personal and medical needs.

Generally, a family member or friend of the veteran steps forward to become the veteran’s guardian, but there are a few cases each year when a veteran does not have those options.

In instances where a veteran is unable to care for their person or property and does not have a family member or friend able to act as a guardian, Lebanon VAMC helps by working through the court system to have a guardian appointed. Typically, the Office of Aging assists with these matters, but due to its special federal status, Lebanon VAMC must be directly involved. There are costs associated with the legal process, including attorney and filing fees.

Lebanon County Court System, under the leadership of president Judge John Tylwalk, is partnering to assist with this issue. Under the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between the Lebanon VAMC and the Lebanon County Court Administrator, the court will offer pro bono legal services to pursue court appointment of guardianship for veterans who have been medically determined to lack decision-making capacity to direct their own affairs, including the course of their medical care, and who have no family members or friends willing to petition for guardianship. It will also waive any filing fees associated with any guardianship petitions initiated by the Lebanon VAMC. Lebanon VAMC is one of 170 medical centers in the nation with the sole purpose of providing world-class medical care to America’s veterans. The facility serves Adams, Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, Schuylkill and York counties and oversees community clinics located in Lancaster, Mechanicsburg, Pottsville, Wyomissing, York and Fort Indiantown Gap.
