Hershey Troop 65 welcomed a new Eagle Scout with a Court of Honor on Sept. 9 at Camp Catherine in Hershey.
Jude K. Petersen, a senior at Hershey High School, earned BSA’s highest rank and most prestigious honor after years of service and experience, culminating in his Eagle Scout project. For his project, he designed and fabricated two pairs of concrete cornhole sets. Jude was able to use the sets to bless two beneficiaries, Derry Township Parks and Recreation and the Hershey High School special education program. Students in the special education program utilize the cornhole sets in their outdoor recreation courtyard; Jude also installed a tiled area there for accessibility. Derry Township school board member Ericka Schmidt congratulated Jude and stated, “We are so lucky to have students who show such strong commitment to their fellow students and community.”
State Rep. Tom Mehaffie attended the ceremony and presented Jude with a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as well as a

Cognitive decline is a concern for many adults as they get older. Memory loss and trouble processing ideas can sometimes be a side effect of aging, as Everyday Health says the brain changes in size and structure as a person gets older. The changes can affect how well the brain works over time. Furthermore, illnesses affecting the brain, such as Alzheimer’s disease, may start showing their symptoms in people who have reached their mid-60s, says the National Institute on Aging.
Older adults who want to boost their cognitive health may consider a few strategies.
Maintaining healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels is associated with better cognitive function, according to data published in 2021 in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. Lowering blood pressure also reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke.
When learning new information, people are encouraged to use multiple senses. Harvard Health says that when more senses are used in learning something, more of the brain is involved in retaining the memory.
Staying physically active is also important. Exercise helps maintain blood flow to the brain, which also
helps to reduce the risk for hypertension.
According to Cone Health Medical Group, eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like tuna, salmon, and mackerel, decreases risk for cognitive decline. People should avoid saturated fats, trans fats, and hydrogenated oils.
Getting into the written word can also be beneficial. According to a study in the journal Neurology, regular reading and writing in one’s older years reduced the rate of memory decline by 32%.
Joining a book club or simply reading more on one’s own can improve cognition. Similarly, writing improves memory and communication abilities and can help strengthen the brain.
Avoid drinking sugary beverages and limit consumption of alcohol, as neither boasts brain-boosting properties. Instead, consider tea or coffee; these beverages can improve alertness and focus, as they’re rich in polyphenols and antioxidants. A Place for Mom says caffeine in these beverages can help solidify new memories. Keeping the brain sharp is a multilayered process that involves healthy foods and beverages, exercise, and brain-stimulating activities.
Golf carts are not necessarily reserved for those hitting the links. While it’s true that a cart makes it easier for golfers to travel around a course, the vehicles are popular in and around many residential neighborhoods as well.
Global Market Insights says the golf cart market was valued at $2.5 billion in 2023, with an estimated growth of more than 7.5% expected between 2024 and 2032. The carts are regularly used in residential communities, on university campuses, at campgrounds, and in small towns. Many homes in suburban communities, like those being built in Texas, Florida, and Georgia, now boast additional, smaller garages designed specifically for golf carts. Designated golf cart parking also has turned up in town centers and other retail locations across the country.
As more people rely on golf carts as a second vehicle, outfitting a cart with the right gear can help it stand out.
- Cover: For those without the benefit of a special garage for the cart, a golf cart cover protects the vehicle against sun and weather damage. Look for a cover that is water-repellent.
- Cup holders: Whether they are for a morning cup of coffee or an insulated water tumbler, cup holders are an important feature on a golf cart. Many cup holders attach easily to the rear accessory bar and elsewhere.
- Upgraded tires: Tires that come standard on most golf carts are not the most durable, according to Matt’s Custom Golf Carts. Replacing the tires with ones designed for the terrain the cart will travel the most can be a wise investment.
- New lighting: Improve on visibility and style by customizing lighting accessories on the golf cart. Many carts are being used to get around town, so it pays to have brighter headlights to see roadways and increase the cart’s visibility to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
- Anti-slip mats: These mats can help ensure passengers stay safe and secure when stepping in and out of the golf cart, particularly on rainy days. Custom floor mats are available so people can put even more style into their ride.
- Side mirrors: Improve on safety with the addition of side mirrors. Icon Electric Vehicles says most factory golf carts feature only one small, center-mounted mirror so drivers can view the roadway behind them. While adequate for the golf course, a one-mirror setup may not be safe for the open road. Adding side mirrors can help to elevate the safety factor.
- Tinted windshield: Some golf carts do not come with windshields. The addition of one, particularly a tinted version, can help reduce glare and protect against debris and bugs while driving.
- Rear flip seat kit: This kit increases the seating capacity of the golf cart. When not in use, the seat can be flipped down to carry cargo.
- Speakers: Adding speakers to a golf cart can make the ride even more enjoyable. Bluetooth speakers may not require any special wiring and can work with a smartphone. Golf carts are turning up outside of golf courses, making them a go-to second vehicle for people in various communities. Accessorizing a golf cart can improve the driving experience.
Exercise provides a number of measurable benefits for people of all ages, including older adults. Swimming is one exercise that may be especially beneficial for seniors.
Many people learn to swim in childhood and sharpen that skill as they get older. Although swimming devotees may get in the water for fun rather than fitness, this pastime may be the ideal exercise for seniors looking to improve their overall health, particularly because it is very low-impact.
Because the water provides buoyancy, there is reduced risk of injury and minimal strain on the body. Water exercises, including swimming, work all the muscle groups, so it can be a complete exercise, says American Senior Communities. Swimming also is a great cardiovascular exercise that can strengthen the heart muscle and improve lung function and endurance. Because it lowers blood pressure and improves circulation, swimming is a great way to get the heart pumping.
A gentle, 30-minute swim can burn up to 200 calories, which is more than would be used when walking.
A faster swim can burn calories more quickly than running or cycling, and since water supports up to 90% of the body’s weight, this activity will put less stress on muscles and joints while one is exercising.
Individuals with mobility issues or arthritis pain may find that swimming helps relieve discomfort and improves range of motion. The water is doing much of the work holding up the body, which takes the stress off joints, helping a person to feel better while moving.
Even seniors who don’t know how to swim can reap the benefits of water exercise. Walking in shallow water or using a kickboard to stay above the water can be effective. Using foam dumbbells or even pushing and pulling one’s arms through the water can serve as a great resistance exercise that builds strength.
Swimming and additional water activities are great ways for seniors to stay in shape. As always, individuals should speak with their doctors before beginning any exercise regimen to ensure that it is safe.
Caregivers come from all walks of life. Doctors and nurses may be the frontline medical providers people encounter most frequently, but plenty of others do their part to maintain the well-being of individuals. Among these caregivers are home health aides.
Home health aides, sometimes called personal care aides, assist people with activities of daily life. An aide typically helps a person who may need assistance with tasks he or she cannot perform due to illness or disability. The aides may work in a person’s home, in a group home, or in another care facility.
AARP says home health aides are considered health care paraprofessionals and must meet established training requirements, which vary by location. Their duties may include assistance with personal care, such as dressing, toileting, feeding, and moving from a bed to a chair; checking vital signs; monitoring a client; light housekeeping; meal planning and cooking; pick-
ing up prescriptions; and providing companionship. Aides typically will not provide skilled nursing care and may not be able to offer recommendations on treatment or medications.
Individuals can enlist the services of home health aides who work independently or are placed through agencies. Sometimes a doctor or hospital has connections to aide services and can make referrals. It can be useful to interview several potential aides to find one who will fit with the needs and personality of the person requiring assistance. A good aide is compassionate, patient, and flexible. As illness or injury also can affect a person’s mood, aides must be able to adjust if a client is reluctant to receive help or is depressed or anxious from his or her limitations.
Home health aides serve an important role in the health care community by providing care and companionship to those who can no longer live independently.

Lebanon Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) recently announced that it received a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings and five stars from CMS’ quarterly patient satisfaction review, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers & Systems (HCAHPS).
CMS Star Ratings are a rating-based system to summarize measures of health care quality from CMS Care Compare in a way that is easy to interpret for patients and caregivers, enabling them to make informed decisions about where they seek health care. Overall, Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities were more likely in the 2024 ratings to receive four or five Overall Star Ratings and less likely to receive two or three stars than non-VA facilities.
“It’s our commitment
that every eligible veteran not only can choose VA health care, but when they do, that they get the very best and safest care possible,” said VA Under Secretary for Health Dr. Shereef Elnahal. “For the second year in a row, VA care has been shown to be some of the best in the nation. We are dedicated to continuously improving as we strive toward always providing the highest quality of care to veterans.”
Nationally, VA hospitals continue to perform well on both CMS’ Overall Star Rating and its quarterly Patient Satisfaction Survey. In the most recent CMS Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) star ratings, 79% of VA facilities received a summary star rating of four or five stars. In this year’s CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings, more than 58% of VA hospitals included
received four- or five-star ratings; this is the second year VA hospitals have been included in this review.
These findings come at a time when veteran trust in VA outpatient care has reached an all-time record high of 92%, based on a survey of more than 440,000 veterans. Additionally, these findings are consistent with a recent systematic review that found that VA health care is consistently rated as being as good as - or better than - non-VA health care.
Both CMS ratings aim to improve patients’ ability to make informed decisions about where they receive care. CMS awards Overall Star Ratings to hospitals based on five categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care. CMS’ HCAHPS summary star ratings combine information across 10 measures
Capital Blue Cross is supporting several 2024 educational programs by distributing nearly $1 million in 80 Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Live Healthy school grants across central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley so far this year.
EITC grants use state business-tax credits to fund scholarships and enrich educational opportunities through donations to innovative programs. Live Healthy grants support innovative school programs that strive to increase physical activity, enhance nutrition and encourage healthier life habits.
Capital’s generosity
has helped fund schools, summer camps and innovative learning initiatives benefiting thousands of children.
Among the local programs Capital’s support is making possible this year is the Salvation Army Harrisburg Summer Youth Enrichment, which received an EITC grant. During the program, more than 100 children enjoyed an activity-packed, affordable 2024 summer camp complete with literacy lessons, sessions on character and emotional development, nutrition and cooking classes, career exploration and more.
A Live Healthy grant was
awarded to the Tiger Tranquility Den in the Fleetwood Area School District, Berks County. The tranquility den creates a serene school space for students to relax and recharge so they can improve mental focus, reduce stress and enhance their mental well-being.
Another EITC grant was awarded to the Mobile Agriculture Education Science Lab - Dauphin County. With many student generations removed from farm life, the mobile lab uses innovative methods to bridge the agricultural knowledge gap, including interactive experiments to help students across Pennsylvania connect with
of patient experience, including staff communication and responsiveness, hospital environment, willingness to recommend the hospital, and overall hospital rating. This year’s Overall Star Ratings are based on data collected between July 2019 and March 2023, and this quarter’s HCAHPS star ratings are based on data collected between October 2022 and September 2023.
The VA aims to deliver timely, world-class health care to veterans. The overall rating, as well as ratings on specific quality and satisfaction measures, of local VA hospitals can be found via CMS’ Care Compare tool.

Mansion Preservation Society have included restoration of interior fireplaces as well as exterior work on the space between the mansion and the property’s summer kitchen, where the café is housed. Proceeds from the event will be used for ongoing restoration work at the mansion, which will house a museum dedicated to
Haldeman in rooms on the first floor. Artifacts and objects for the museum are currently stored on the building’s second floor, so tour-goers will be limited to the lower level, but they will still get insight into Haldeman’s life, his impact on the region and the history of the home.
“They will get to learn about bugs, which was an
interest of Sam Haldeman,” Jackson said. “They will also get to see the progress we’re making inside with the restoration.”
Jackson has been organizing events at the mansion since 2001. The Apple Fall Festival will be her last event, she said, and she hopes people will bring their families out for a day in the countryside.
“They get a beautiful view of the Susquehanna River,” she said. “People like to come, relax, listen to the band, spend time with friends. It’s just a nice way to spend an afternoon.”
Admission to the festival is free, but there is a small fee for parking. For more information on Haldeman Mansion, visit www.haldeman -mansion.org.
