Very loving, sweet, and always having fun - that’s how Jacquelyn Sauder Iannello describes her older sister Megan Sauder Ralston. With two and a half years between them in age, the sisters - who are the youngest daughters of John and Bonita Sauder of Lititz - grew up doing nearly everything together and had a friendship that strengthened into adulthood.

Megan graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School and went on to play Division I field hockey at Virginia Commonwealth University and earn a Master of Teaching in 2011. She taught first-grade in the Washington, D.C., area and married the love of her life, John Ralston, in 2013.

In 2016, after finding a small lump in her breast about six months after giving birth to her son, Bryce, Megan - who was living in Charlottesville, Va., at the time and had no family history of breast cancer - made an OB-GYN appointment and was told by two doctors that the lump was a blocked milk duct. “She was nursing at the time, and the doctors said it was going to go away,” said Jacquelyn. “She was misdiagnosed.”

Megan’s pain continued to increase to the point of being unable to lift her son. She returned to the doctor weeks later and was directed to a breast care clinic where she had a mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy completed within the week. She was diagnosed with a pregnancy-related breast cancer five days after her 30th birthday.

Inspired by the sense of support she received from her community and other women battling cancer as she began undergoing treatment, Megan wanted

to start an organization with the goal of creating awareness, donating toward research, and supporting others battling breast cancer. Megan and Jacquelyn established Thrive and Grit in 2017 with a mission of pushing people to thrive under extraordinary circumstances with grit and perseverance.

“She really wanted other people to hear her story,” said Jacquelyn. “Just because you’re young doesn’t mean it can’t happen, and there definitely needs to be that awareness. Be your own advocate and push for testing if something isn’t right.”

Thrive and Grit kicked off its efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in 2017 and started Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster to financially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Jacquelyn noted that oftentimes insurance companies require women to be 40 years or older to qualify for assistance, and Thrive and Grit aims to fill that gap.

On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never lost faith. She had such strong faith, and that was her rock through everything,” said Jacquelyn, who is continuing the work of Thrive and Grit.

Megan embodied kindness and had wanted to host a catered meal for the doctors and nurses at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute to thank them for the wonderful care she received. Her family and Thrive and Grit were able to make her idea a reality last December, and Jacquelyn hopes to repeat that event in the future.

Hershey Area Playhouse, 830 Cherry Drive, Hershey, will present “The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” written by Rupert Holmes, as part of its 20th anniversary season.

Shows will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday to Saturday, Oct. 10 to 12, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13.

Based on Charles Dickens’ unfinished novel of the same name, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” is an interactive whodunit mystery musical that gets audience members in on the action by allowing them to vote on the ending. Eric S. Mansilla directs and choreographs the production at Hershey Area Playhouse.

The AACA Museum Inc., 161 Museum Drive, Hershey, will host a driver safety program featuring former professional race car driver Loren Elmer at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Elmer, the author of “Stay Alive While Driving: The Secrets of a Race Car Driver,” will share tips and techniques drivers of all ages can use to avoid car accidents and stay safe on the road.

He will discuss teenage driving, why teenagers are sometimes considered distracted drivers, and what parents can do about it.

Additionally, he will talk about unintended acceleration and what drivers can do if it happens to them.

At the end of the program, Elmer will host a question-andanswer session and sign copies of his book.

AACA National and the Hershey Region AACA will welcome antique and collectible car enthusiasts from around the world. More than 700 volunteers from the region work all year to put together the antique car show and flea market. The show attracts more than

250,000 visitors each year. The event will feature nearly 1,200 collector cars on display and 1,000 antique cars available for purchase.

Memorial flags are sought for the Avenue of Flags at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville. Community members are invited to donate flags that were presented to surviving family members at military honors funerals.

Hundreds of memorial flags are needed to replace the weather-worn flags used in the Avenue of Flags presentation and to fill in the newly expanded burial sections at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville.

The Avenue of Flags presentation at this national cemetery currently is a display of more than 550 USA interment (casket/memorial) flags attached to 20foot staffs placed along the driveways of the cemetery. With the new grave section expansion, the Flags-Up event in May of 2020 will initially need at least 660 interment flags to complete the display and flag donations continuing through the year to maintain a supply of replacement interment flags.

Specifically, an interment flag is the flag presented to the surviving family member at a military honors funeral.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has a strict policy stating only interment flags are permitted to be flown on the Avenue of Flags. Through the years, many families have donated their flags to be flown on the Avenue of Flags at this national cemetery as a tribute to their deceased loved one regardless of where the veteran is buried.

The cemetery’s Memorial Council invites the public to become involved in the Avenue of Flags program by donating their family’s interment flag and allowing the Memorial Council to fly it on the Avenue of Flags.

Of the 135 national cemeteries, Indiantown Gap and a smaller one in South Dakota are known as the only ones presenting this style of the Avenue of Flags from the beginning of May until shortly after Veterans Day in November.

Every flag is inspected by the weekly

inspection teams that take down and replace weather-worn flags, sometimes at the rate of 90 to 100 flags per month.

Weather-worn flags are then properly retired, and their ashes are placed in the bottom of a standard grave before a veteran’s casket is placed.

Anyone who would like to donate an interment flag may drop it off at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery’s Administration Building (the building with the barn silo) on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. There will also be two collection locations set up on Saturday, Oct. 12, to accept donated flags to the Avenue of Flags presentation. Memorial Council member Althea Cirillo will collect flags at The Bridge Faith Community, 10 Kauffman Road (Route 934), Annville, from 9 a.m. until noon. Bob Hauser will collect flags at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery from noon until 2 p.m. Readers may also contact Hauser at marinedadbob@ yahoo.com if they cannot visit either of the collection locations that day.

Boy Scout troops, VFWs, American Legions and other organizations that perform flag retirement ceremonies are encouraged not to retire flags but to donate them to the Memorial Council so those flags can be flown in final tribute at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

Members of the public may also consider making a financial donation to the Memorial Council. Funds go toward purchasing the aluminum flag staffs for the flags or toward the annual purchase of the full set of state and territorial flags.

Bracelet, Earring Workshops Slated Palm Squares Sets Dance Events Hummelstown Area Historical Society will host two workshops on Sunday, Oct. 20, in the History House, 32 W. Main St., Hummelstown.

From 1 to 3 p.m., Lisa Ditty of LPDStudios will teach a leather stamped bracelet “Make Me Mine” workshop. Attendees will explore surface design on leather and will design and make a single- or double-wrap leather bracelet. They will learn the basic skills of working in leather from cutting and punching to stamping and finishing by painting and highlighting the piece of jewelry.

From 3 to 5 p.m., participants can make calla lily earrings made of leather, freshwater pearls, and sterling silver, brass, or copper.

Ditty will teach attendees some sewing and the jewelry making technique of cold joining. Each set of earrings will be designed by the participant.

A new Peace Pole has been installed at the outside corner of Spring Creek Church of the Brethren (COB), 335 E. Areba Ave., Hershey. The pole is inscribed with a prayer, “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” written in four languages: English, Hungarian, Navajo, and Hausa (Nigeria). The Spring Creek congregation has been connected in various ways to ministry in places with these languages. There is also a plaque attached with the prayer written in Braille.

Peace Poles are memorials, silent prayers, and international symbols for peace.

Weaber Pledges Gift To LVVM Weaber Lumber has pledged a gift to Lebanon Valley Volunteers in Medicine (LVVM). The LVVM facility provides comprehensive medical care to the working uninsured and underserved of the community. The staff is composed of volunteer medical professionals and lay personnel who offer free services that include urgent care, basic medical care, chronic disease management, and education. Patients never receive a bill for the care they are given.
