During the 2022-23 season, he was guest soloist with The Manassas Symphony, Western Piedmont Symphony, The Altoona Symphony, The Piedmont Symphony, The Chesapeake Orchestra, and The National Symphony Orchestra of London.

As part of the Lebanon Valley Council on the Arts’ First Friday Art Walk on Oct. 4, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 22 S. Sixth St., Lebanon, will host an open house with tours and a presentation. The open house with tours will be from 5 to 8 p.m., and the presentation, at 6:30 p.m., will focus on the architecture, renovations, and history of the current church building.

This year marks the 145th anniversary of the laying of the building’s cornerstone.

T he open house and presentation mark the successful completion of an extensive capital improvement project designed to improve building access and the church’s facilities.

“St. Luke’s was a gift of the Coleman family to the Lebanon community,” said St. Luke’s Episcopal Church was completed Wiley Parker, chairman of in 1880.

St. Luke’s Capital Campaign Committee. “Keeping with that spirit, the work done reflects the generosity and commitment of St. Luke’s parishioners in making our church and facilities more accessible to the community for all sorts of events, while preserving the priceless art and architecture of the building.”

Robert “Bob” Hoffman, principal emeritus at Beers Hoffman Architecture, will deliver the 6:30 p.m. presentation, which will explore the unique High Victorian Gothic architecture of St. Luke’s as well as showcase the history and completed renovations.

Hoffman led the team of architects in designing a new accessible bell tower entrance as well as the complete renovations to the kitchens, restrooms, and other meeting facilities in the administrative wing of the church. Arthur Funk & Sons served as the general contractor of the project.

Completed in October of 1880, the current St. Luke’s Episcopal Church building was a gift of Robert H. Coleman in memory of his recently deceased wife, Lilly, who was interred in the See St. Luke’s pg 3

Master Gardeners to offer programs

with a Master Gardener at Detweiler Park, 1451 Peters Mountain Road, Dauphin, will take place on Friday, Oct. 11, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Attendees will learn what flowers are blooming and what insects are roaming in one of six demonstration gardens.

The final Home Gardening Series presentations of the year will be offered on Saturdays, Oct. 26 and Nov. 16, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Wildwood Park’s Olewine Nature Center, 100 Wildwood Way, Harrisburg.

The program will focus on adding colors, layers, textures and biodiversity to fall and shade gardens.

by New York architect Henry Martyn Congdon in the High Victorian Gothic style. The building is in the form of a Latin cross and was constructed of native bluestone and sandstone.

It measures 116 feet long and 75 feet wide, and it features a square, 85-foot tower with an octagonal turret. The roof is covered

in rows of blue and red slate. Features of the building include prominent stained-glass windows, exposed wooden rafters, stone mosaics, and carved stone columns.

Maintaining older vehicles Ne w c a rs h ave b e e n costly for quite some time, so motorists may wonder how they can get more mileage out of their existing vehicles.

Drivers can take the following steps to keep their existing cars running smo o thly for years to come.

- Take care of the timing belt. Engines may get all the glory, but they cannot run smoothly without a fully functional timing belt, which helps to synchronize movements of various c o m p o n e n t s . O w n e r ’s manuals may note when to replace the timing belt, but they generally must be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles. Although replacement is required infrequently, drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing belts.

During the early months of the pandemic, many people learned that infrequent driving can cause a timing belt to fail before it reaches the projected mile marker. Aging drivers should keep this fact in mind if they do not drive as much as they used to.

- Take care of the brakes and associated components. The experts at Popular Mechanics urge drivers of older vehicles to replace their brake fluid every two years. Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the r ubber brake lines when major brake work is required.

- Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they burn.

For this reason, owners of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often

than they would if their vehicles were brand new.

These checks also provide a way to discover leaks before they lead to potentially significant issues.

- Don’t skip maintenance appointments. Even if you’re still driving less due to the pandemic, it’s best to keep up with maintenance on any car, especially if the car is older. Routine tune-ups and oil changes, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul.

The rising cost of new cars may compel people to keep their cars longer than the y mig ht have anticipated. A few simple maintenance measures may help to prolong the life of a vehicle.

• Protect from the sun: A car that is routinely and properly washed and waxed is less vulnerable to damage from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

• Extend the life of paint: Dirt and debris can build up on the paint surface and eventually lead to scratches and other damage. Bird droppings and sap can be corrosive. Washing will help remove grime and protect the paint in the process.

• Preserve the vehicle’s value: Drivers who plan to sell or trade in their vehicles in the future should realize that a well-maintained car can bring in as much as 20% more for above-average condition, according to Kelley Blue Book. Maintaining a clean and shiny vehicle can protect its longterm value.

CARE Four signs tires need to be replaced Cars are a significant investment, which underscores the importance of vehicle maintenance.

Maintenance is more than just tending to what’s under the hood. Tires also require drivers’ attention, as aging, damaged tires pose a safety risk and also compromise vehicle performance. Tires can be easily overlooked, but the following are four signs tires need to be replaced.

1. Worn tread: The automotive experts at AutoZone note that tread depth is the most prevalent indicator that a tire needs to be replaced. AutoZone notes that tread depth should always be at least 1/16 of an inch throughout the tire. Depth should be measured across the tread and around the circumference.

If the tread is at or below 1/16 of an inch, the tire should be replaced.

2. Bulges, gouges, or cracks: Geico notes that a deflated tire bulges at the sides, and that can compromise the safety of everyone in the vehicle. AutoZone says bulges occur when air gets between the inner liner and outer rubber layers, which can happen after hitting a curb or driving over a sizable pothole. A gouge or cut that is deeper than the outer layer of the tire also necessitates replacement.

3. Poor grip: Drivers may be able to feel certain tire problems, including poor grip, while driving. In such instances, tires may feel as though they are slipping.

The tire experts at Firestone note that low tread can reduce tire traction and cause wheels to slip, which may be more noticeable when accelerating from a stop or driving on wet roads. Drivers who feel

their tires are slipping can test the tread and replace tires that are low.

4. Vibration: Vibration is another issue drivers may feel rather than see. Identifying the cause requires noting where the vibrations are felt. Geico notes that vibration or thumping that feels like it’s coming from under the seats may indicate the tires are not balanced.

A suspension issue could be to blame if the steering wheel feels like it’s vibrating. Either feeling should be brought to the attention of a mechanic immediately.

Tire issues affect vehicle performance and compromise the safety of drivers, their passengers, and fellow motorists. When vehicles are not performing at peak capacity, drivers should not overlook various tire issues as a potential cause of such troubles.

Maintenance mile markers Modern automobiles are technological marvels. As advancements in automotive technology have made cars more reliable than ever, drivers may feel as though vehicle ownership also is more hands-off than ever before. Though it ’s tr ue that built-in diagnostic technology is designed to alert drivers to certain issues, it can still benefit motorists to recognize when certain issues may arise.

Cars and the people who drive them are different, so mileage intervals are not always the best measuring stick for maintenance issues. However, the following rundown can serve as a guidebook for drivers who want to know what to expect at various mileage intervals.

• 3 0 , 0 0 0 m i l es : T he experts at Auto Trader note that disposable engine air filters usually last between 15,000 and 30,000 miles.

If it’s been about 30,000 miles since the engine air filter has been replaced, it would be a good time to replace this important p a r t , w h i c h p re v e n t s

components like dirt and debris from getting into the engine. This also might be a good time to replace the fuel filter, which prevents debris from clogging fuel injectors.

• 50,000 to 60,000 miles: It’s about this time that drivers may need to replace their vehicle batteries.

Little-used vehicles may need a new battery much earlier, as lengthy periods of little or no use adversely affect the life expectancy of vehicle batteries.

Brakes also may need to be replaced about this time, as the experts at AutoZone note that most drivers get between two and five years out of a set of brake pads. If that sounds like a significant range, it is, and that’s because driver behavior is a significant variable affecting the life of the pads. Drivers who brake hard will likely need to replace their brake pads with greater frequency than drivers who brake slowly.

• 50,000 to 90,000 miles: As noted, there is no uniform guideline governing when vehicle components

will need to be replaced.

Hoses are a good example of that, as recommendations regarding when to replace hoses range from 50,000 to 90,000 miles. That’s a significant range, but drivers can be on the safe side and start discussing the status of their hoses with their mechanics around the 50,000-mile marker. It’s unlikely the hoses will make it all the way to 90,000 miles before they need to be replaced, but drivers can keep that mileage marker in mind and aim to replace the hoses before that point even if no issue has arisen.

Timing belts also tend to fail between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, so this is another part to consider replacing as a vehicle reaches this point.

These mileage markers are not set in stone and should only ser ve as a guideline for drivers who want to stay ahead of vehicle repairs. Drivers also are urged to discuss any additional changes that might be necessary with their mechanics during routine maintenance appointments.

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown. World War II author and historian Mitch Topal will speak about Delaware resident Ray Firmani’s service piloting a B-17 on 25 bombing runs over Nazi Germany.

The son of poor Italian immigrants, Firmani excelle d in the ninem o n t h U n i te d S t ate s Army Air Corps (USAAC) training program, was awarded his wings and, by the end of the war, had earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. Topal’s book

Volunteers are needed to offer free tax preparation to help working families receive the federal and state tax credits they are eligible for. No previous experience is required, and training is provided.

Traditions of Hershey will host a Ladies’ Tea as a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness. The event will take place on Friday, Oct. 11, at 9 a.m. at 100 N. Larkspur Drive.

In addition to offering tea and treats, the event will promote breast cancer awareness and provide a talk about women’s health.

Anyone who wears pink to the event will be entered in a drawing for a gift basket.

The Harrisburg Civil War Round Table will meet on Friday, Oct. 11, at the Central Penn College Conference Center, 600 Valley Road, Summerdale. Following a brief business meeting, Tim Wright from Harrisburg will discuss his two tours in Vietnam: the first with the Americal Division in I Corps from October 1969 to October 1970 and the second one with MACV Adviser Team 73 in IV Corps from October 1972 to October 1973.

Wright graduated from John Harris High School and attended Harrisburg Area Community College for one year before being drafted.

Following his service in Vietnam, he finished his service at Fort Campbell, Ky., finishing active duty in 1975.

He eventually graduated from Harrisburg Area Community College and Penn State University. After Penn State, Wright went to the University of Maryland School of Law in 1979, graduating in 1982. Shortly after going to law school, he joined the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. He eventually retired from both the National Guard and practicing law with more than 20 years of service.

Vickie’s Angel Walk planned The third annual Daup h i n C o u n t y V i c k i e ’s Angel Walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Friendship YMC A (formerly the Friendship Center), 5000 Commons Drive, Harrisburg. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with the program at 8:45 a.m. The walk will step off at 9:30 a.m. rain or shine.

This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the Vickie’s Angel Foundation (VAF), which was founded by Mickey Minnich in memory of his wife, Vickie, whom he lost to cancer in 2002.

VAF focuses on providing financial assistance for local families fighting cancer. The organization directly pays mortgages, rent, utilities and more to help ease the financial burden and allow the recipient to concentrate

more on their treatment and getting well. The main goal is to help keep families in their homes with food on the table during one of the most difficult times in their lives.

VAF serves nine counties in central Pennsylvania and has raised more than $4 million for families in need.

For the past 21 years, the Angel Walk, which is the organization’s major fundraising event, has been held at Borough Park in New Cumberland. Last year, the event expanded to include a satellite location in Dauphin County, an area that is among those with the greatest number of people served by VAF. The walks will be held simultaneously.
