FIA banquets will showcase international impacts

F

riends In Action International (FIA), a faith-based nonprofit organization in Middletown, will offer the choice of two different dates and venues for its annual awareness banquet. The organization exists to assist missionaries serving in areas of limited infrastructure by using construction projects to help them share the Gospel with unreached people groups.

One banquet will take place on Friday, Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. at Lebanon Valley Bible Church, 1482 Horseshoe Pike, Lebanon.

A second, identical banquet will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 5 p.m. at the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey Hotel, 4650 Lindle Road, Harrisburg.

Attendees at both locations will enjoy a dinner buffet complete with a dessert bar. The event’s theme is celebrating reaching

the nations and generations for Christ. Throughout the evening, guests will see how God has combined the experience and generosity of the greatest generation with the strength and exuberance of the next generation to make frontline Gospel impacts.

At each event, the keynote speaker will be FIA’s field leader in Vanuatu, Levi Pitman, who will share stories about serving NiVan villagers living in the region. Guests will learn how FIA volunteer travelers use trade and construction skills to make progress on water projects that will bring clean water to more than 3,500 villagers.

The Hummelstown Area Historical Society has opened the exhibit “Have a Seat.” The show may be viewed at the History House, 32 W. Main St., Hummelstown, during normal business hours on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. There is no charge for admission. Concert to feature competition winner The Hershey Symphony will kick off its 56th season at the Hershey Theatre, 15 E. Caracas Ave., Hershey, on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. with “Romantic Reveries,” a program that includes Dvořák’s Prague Waltzes and Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major. The concerto will be performed by Daniel Huang, the symphony’s 2024 Young Artist Competition winner.

“I was impressed with Daniel’s command of the piece,” said

maestro Greg Woodbridge. “He captured the power and the elegance without ever being out of control. He plays with a rhythmic precision and a beautiful, singing tone.”

Huang has been studying piano for 12 years and plans to study violin performance in college.

The group meets most Wednesdays and is open to everyone from 3-yearolds through teens.

The festivities will kick off with breakfast served by the Conoy Lions Club beginning at 7 a.m. both days. Opening ceremonies will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with an interdenominational church service held from 9 to 10 a.m. on Sunday.

A fishing derby for children age 15 and under will be held following opening ceremonies. Participants should bring their own bait and rod.

A tractor parade will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday.

With a theme of “Made in Pennsylvania,” both days will feature live entertainment from bluegrass bands, demonstrations, re-enactors, vendors and food.

A benefit auction will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

“We will have lots of variety,” said event volunteer Tonya Bernhard, describing the auction. “ There are usually a lot of antiques, but we never really know what we’re going to have because it’s whatever people donate.”

New this year, the event will offer an opportunity to win a variety of giveaway baskets, featuring gift cards to local businesses and attractions, personal care products, a “Taste of Lancaster County” basket and more.

Lots of old-fashioned activities and demonstrations will take place throughout the weekend, Tonya said.

“We’ll have both Civil War and Revolutionary War re-enactors. There will be somebody pressing cider.

There’s a shingle mill, a sawmill and a blacksmith,” she commented. “We will have all kinds of hit and miss engines. They might be shelling corn or running water.”

true story of a group of military wives who sought to learn what happened to America’s POWs and those missing in action (MIA) during the Vietnam War. In the 1960s , most women were denied credit cards, car loans, and mortgages without a spouse or father to co-sign. Military wives had greater restrictions. If a woman was informed that her husband was MIA, she was warned to keep quiet. Initially women followed this instruction, but as days turned into years of waiting, they wondered if they were wives or widows.

Admist the tumult of anti-war protests and civil rights marches, a group of military wives galvanized the nation around the plight of their husbands, some 1,500 men held captive or missing in southeast Asia. They influenced a president and a nation to change policy so that no man is left behind, and the POW/MIA issue became

“We have a lot of craft vendors, and many of them have been coming back for years,” said volunteer Sandy Baker. “We have vendors who sell soap. We have a woman who makes embroidered items. We’ll have a Tastefully Simple vendor.”

Homemade food is also a highlight of the event, said volunteer Jolynn Bernhard.

“We have home-churned ice cream, apple dumplings, whoopie pies,” she shared. “We have lots of food stands.”

The Lions Club will host a new food stand featuring half-chickens, Ron said, with proceeds going to support future old-fashioned days. “All of the money we raise, through the auction and everything else, goes right back into the show so we can keep this going year after year,” Tonya remarked.

Gray graduated from Midwood High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., and holds a master’s degree in public health from the George Washington University, where she teaches public health campaigns and messaging to graduate students. Her lengthy service in the Coast Guard Reserves gave her a frontrow seat to history, which she captured visually and in narrative writing. She also worked as a reporter for the Tampa Tribune and has published six books for young readers.

“It’s just rewarding to see all the families there,” Ron stated. “Even if people don’t have much interest in the hit and miss engines, which is my thing, there are so many other things for them to see and do. We get so much positive feedback, so it’s rewarding that way.”

Jolynn noted that some families have been coming back year after year. “We have so many generations that come to this,” she said. “We’ll have a lot of three- and four-generation families.”

Ron encourages everyone to come out for at least one of the days, noting that admission and parking are free.

Added Tonya, “It’s a very family-oriented event.

People will show you how things were done back then. If you’re watching a demonstration and you have questions, you can ask the demonstrators, and they will be more than happy to talk to you about what they’re doing.”

Fall Music Fest posted Makers’ market planned A Fall Music Fest will be held at the Fogleman Farmstead, 1536 Old Forge Road, Annville, on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Performers will include the Full Circle at 12:15 p.m., Jake’s Rockin’ Country Band at 2:45 p.m., Best Friend’s Girl at 5:15 p.m., and Broken Arrow - The Music of Neil Young at 7:45 p.m. Additional musical acts will be the Neighborly, Matt Jamison, Keara Rose, and Roger Bowyer.

The all-you-can-eat food

offerings will feature openpit chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, and french fries. Soda and water are also included.

The texts purport to be from Pennsylvania Turnpike Toll Services and center around urgent requests to settle unpaid tolls; the texts claim that the recipient will be charged an additional amount if an overdue balance is not paid.
