HOPE International Plans Golf Event

Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, is keenly aware of the worldwide impact of COVID-19. HOPE International is a nonprofit organization that seeks to alleviate poverty in all its forms - spiritual, material, social, and personal.

Over its more than 20-year history, the organization, with offices at 227 Granite Run Drive, Suite 250, Lancaster, has done that by loaning out more than $1 billion and helping to start savings groups among about a million clients in 16 countries.

Now, those clients, who Rutt said are already on “fragile footing,” have been teetering on the brink.

“We have been trying to pull them off that proverbial cliff edge,” said Rutt. “ We have gotten some results.”

HOPE has instituted a threephase plan called Rebuilding Dreams, which first provided food and water to clients who needed it to survive. The second phase involved a 60-day

Russo Begins Eagle Scout Project Nathan D. Russo is seeking community support for his Eagle Scout project, which aims to bring awareness and recognition to those who are serving or have served in the military. Nathan is currently a Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 594 of Middletown, which is sponsored by American Legion Post 594.

With permission from Lower Swatara Township, Nathan plans to install flags at Memorial Field, the lighted baseball field at Little Hollywood Park. He has determined that the field was never named for any person or thing. Nathan will purchase five flagpoles and one flag each for the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.

During a dedication ceremony scheduled to occur in October, Nathan will present the five flags, and the field will be dedicated to the U.S. armed forces. American Legion Post 594 will participate in the event.

The project will require more than $4,000 for the purchase of the flagpoles and flags as well as installation and landscaping. Individuals and businesses may make taxdeductible donations that will be recognized. Various recognition levels are available.

The deadline to contribute is Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Nathan Russo of Boy Scout Troop 594 is seeking support for his Eagle Scout project, which will entail installing flagpoles at Memorial Field in Little Hollywood Park in Lower Swatara Township and displaying the flags of the U.S. armed forces.

“Serb Fest To Go” Slated St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church, 601 S. Harrisburg St., Oberlin, will host a Serb Fest To Go on Saturday, Sept.

12, in the church parking lot.

The takeout-only event will run from noon to 4 p.m. or until sold out.

Patrons may choose from a limited menu that includes sarma, cevaps, lamb and sausage sandwiches, chicken

paprikas, muckalica, haluski, potato salad, plain savory cheese gibanica, and baklava. Patrons will be able to get the foods while remaining in their car.

Hi, everyone! Here we are in September! In my eyes, when August is over, that means summer is over. (Boo hoo hoo hoo!) And when September gets here, that means it is fall! Time for pumpkin spice everything!

(Again, boo hoo hoo hoo!) OK, not really. I really do love the fall months too. I love the crisper air and being able to sit by a campfire without being eaten alive by mosquitoes. And I have some really cute hoodies and boots!

So, the first week or so of September is bittersweet to me. Goodbye, summer, see you next year!

The Heart

“Tomorrow morning,” the surgeon began, “I’ll open up your heart...”

“You’ll find Jesus there,” the boy interrupted.

The surgeon looked up, annoyed. “I’ll cut your heart open,” he continued, “to see how much damage has been done...”

“But when you open up my heart, you’ll find Jesus in there,” said the boy.

The surgeon looked to the parents, who sat quietly.

“When I see how much damage has been done, I’ll sew your heart and chest back up, and I’ll plan what to do next.”

“But you’ll find Jesus in my heart. The Bible says He lives there. The hymns all say He lives there. You’ll find Him in my heart.”

The surgeon had had enough. “I’ll tell you what I’ll find in your heart. I’ll find damaged muscle, low blood supply, and weakened vessels.

And I’ll find out if I can make you well.”

“You’ll find Jesus there too.

He lives there.”

The surgeon left.

The surgeon sat in his office, recording his notes from the surgery, “...damaged aorta, damaged pulmonary vein, widespread muscle degeneration. No hope for transplant, no hope for cure.

Therapy: painkillers and bed rest. Prognosis...” Here he paused. “Death within one year.”

He stopped the recorder, but there was more to be said.

“Why?” he asked aloud. “Why did You do this? You’ve put him here, You’ve put him in this pain, and You’ve cursed him to an early death. Why?” The Lord answered and said, “The boy, My lamb, was not meant for your flock for long, for he is a part of My flock, and will forever be.

Here, in My flock, he will feel no pain and will be comforted as you cannot imagine.

His parents will one day join him here, and they will know peace, and My flock will continue to grow.”

The surgeon’s tears were hot, but his anger was hotter.

“You created that boy, and You created that heart. He’ll be dead in months. Why?” The Lord answered, “The boy, My lamb, shall return to My flock, for He has done his duty: I did not put My lamb with your flock to lose him, but to retrieve another lost lamb.”

The surgeon wept.

After the surgery, the surgeon sat beside the boy’s bed; the boy’s parents sat across from him. The boy awoke and

Old-Fashioned Easy Apple Crisp

(Made the old-fashioned way like Grandma used to make, and it is easy! Perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and salted caramel sauce!)

Ingredients: 6 golden delicious apples, peeled and chopped (other varieties can be used, can also be sliced) 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 3/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice 1 cup light brown sugar 3/4 cup old fashioned oats 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes pinch of kosher salt Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Butter an 8-by-8 baking dish, or spray with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.

2. In a mixing bowl, add chopped apples, granulated sugar, 3/4 teaspoon of the cinnamon and lemon juice.

Stir to combine, then transfer to prepared baking dish.

3. In a separate mixing bowl, add topping ingredients (brown sugar, oats, flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, salt, and diced cold butter). Use a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the oat mixture, using a slight downward twisting motion, until mixture resembled pea-sized crumbs. (If you don’t have a pastry cutter, two forks work too!)

4. Spread topping over apples in baking dish, and gently pat to even it out. Bake 40 to 50 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly.

5. Serve warm and enjoy! DeeLish!

That crucial step cost HOPE about $500,000 a month, for a total expenditure of $1 million. The final phase, which focuses on recapitalization of the tiny client businesses, will include at least $2 million more from HOPE. “These client businesses are starting to reopen, but they need capital to do that,� explained Rutt.

To help raise that capital, HOPE is looking for sponsors and golfers for its 20th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept. 18, beginning at 6:30 a.m. A second round will be held the same day at 1 p.m. at Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Drive, Lebanon.

Rutt has been impressed by the resilience of some of HOPE’s clients. “Irene in Paraguay got a small loan to start a hair salon,� he said, noting that countries like Paraguay do not offer stimulus packages. According to Rutt, Irene quickly reorganized to sewing face masks and selling them to the families in her community. “Irene provided a product (her neighbors) need and an income for her family,� said Rutt. “I thought that was a good example of pivoting to something she could do.�

Lisburn Community Fire Company and Lower Allen Fire Co. No. 1 will jointly host their 10th annual gun drawing live on Facebook on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m.

Due to state regulations and guidelines, the fire companies are unable to hold their traditional buffet dinner for ticket holders. Tickets were printed prior to the newest regulations. All winners will be notified after the drawing. Lisburn’s social hall, 1800 Main St., Mechanicsburg, will be open from 2 to 4 p.m. for winners to pick up their prizes.

Tickets are available individually or in groups of six.

Rutt also told the story of Corine, a savings group member in Zimbabwe. The seventh annual Pennsylvania German worship service, held in the tradition of the 1871 Wenger Meetinghouse, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 2:30 p.m. at the restored meetinghouse, 16 Supervisors Drive, Swatara Township, Jonestown.

The service will be conducted in the Pennsylvania German dialect, known as Pennsylvania Dutch, with the message given

by Douglas J. Madenford, a Berks County native who lives in Howard. Congregational hymn singing in the Pennsylvania German dialect will be led by Ethan Levengood, chaplain at

United Zion Retirement Community, Lititz.

All are invited to attend. The meetinghouse will be open by 2 p.m., at which time visitors will be invited to view it. At one time the Wenger Meetinghouse was a preaching point of the United Zion Church.

A freewill donation will be accepted in support of the meetinghouse.

Museum Cancels October Event After careful consideration and in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic developments, the AACA Museum in Hershey is postponing its Grillin’ & Chillin’ event scheduled for Friday, Oct. 9. The event was rescheduled so it can be held in a safe and healthy environment for everyone.

The museum will still offer its traditional RV parking program. Safe and secure spots to park RVs or camping trailers are available for a fee each day at the museum.

Gamut Will Open Fall Season Gamut Theatre, 15 N. Fourth St. Harrisburg, will kick off its in-person fall season with health and safety protocols in effect. “Chekhov Comedy: Love Hurts!” will open on Saturday, Sept. 12, and tickets are currently on sale. Performances will take place on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. from Sept. 12 to 27.

Gamut Theatre’s health and safety protocols include social distancing and requiring attendees to wear masks at all times. The plan also relies on seating audience members in their cohorts - such as couples, family members or roommates - with six feet of distance between groups. Only 51 tickets will be sold for each performance, which is 25% of the theater’s seating capacity.

Tickets will be sold, and audience members will be seated, as singles, pairs or triples.

“Chekhov Comedy: Love Hurts!” pairs two of Anton Chekhov’s comedies, “The Boor” and “The Marriage Proposal.” The plays focus on love in unexpected places between unlikely people.

Gamut is allowing patrons to choose a ticket price that is

most comfortable for their budget, including suggested amounts or discounted levels. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Attendees are asked to consult Gamut’s health and safety protocols before purchasing a ticket.

Farm Sets County Fair Week Hope Springs Farm, 201 Trail Road, Hershey, will offer a virtual County Fair Week from Monday, Sept. 14, to Friday, Sept. 18.

Due to COVID-19, local county fairs in which growers usually participate have been canceled.

Typically, growers have the opportunity to submit their harvested fruits and vegetables to the fairs, as well as interact with animals. Hope Springs Farm aims to bring that opportunity to them on the farm through a week of friendly com-

petition and special activities.

The festivities will be broadcasted through daily Zoom parties from 1 to 2 p.m. that week.

Some activities will include taking growers’ animals on parades, playing carnival games, and baking special fair treats.

Donations are needed to help to make these weeklong festivities happen, as all of Hope Springs Farm’s fundraisers so far this year have been canceled.

In lieu of its annual Walk of Love Cross Country 5K, Brittany’s Hope, a nonprofit organization that helps orphaned children around the world, will instead hold the Brittany’s Hope Social Distance 5K on Saturday, Sept. 19, at The Barn at Stone Gables in Elizabethtown.

The change, which was made due to the coronavirus pandemic, will adhere to all CDC social distancing and safety guidelines, while also raising money for the charity.

The race will have a time trial type setup that will allow runners to start individually or in small groups of associated participants such as family members or people who live together. Designated start times will begin at 7:30 a.m. and run through 10:30 a.m.

Participants will be able to run safely in a chip-timed, time-segmented race. “Basically, it will be a rolling start,” explained Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director. “A runner will make a reservation online for a time to begin.” She noted that runners must stay in their cars until 10 minutes before they race. Runners will be able to pick up their bibs

containing the timing chip at the starting line not more than five minutes before their start time.

The 5K course will be a cross-country style that includes paved trails and trails through the woods. The course, which will be clearly marked, is a different course from past years. Additionally, runners will have on-course passing restrictions. Upon completing their run and crossing the finish line, participants must return to their vehicles.

Sahd emphasized that the race will have a cap of 300 participants. “We are confident that we can do it in a safe manner,” she noted.

Because of health and safety precautions, there will be no games, activities, lunch or fun walk this year. “On a typical year, we attracted close to 400 runners. It’s a big event,” said Sahd. “Close to 1,000 people came because in the past we had activities and games, a petting zoo and lunch and people picnicked there. It was an event that was highly anticipated by the community.”

People can also participate in a virtual fun walk that weekend. “Whether walking 1 or 2 miles, we encourage fami-

This year, the American Heart Association has changed the format of the Capital Region Heart Walk.

Instead of coming together for a one-day event, participants from across the Harrisburg area can join the Heart Walk by walking wherever they are any time through Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Jessica Kazmaier, executive vice president and chief human resources officer for Rite Aid, will chair this year’s event.

The Capital Region Heart Walk is a way to celebrate heart and stroke survivors, encourage physical activity and wellness, and raise lifesaving funds for the American Heart Association during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anyone can participate in the Heart Walk in a few steps:

Register as a walker at www.heart.org/capitalregion walk and ask family and friends to join the team and donate; register for the “2020 Capital Region Heart Walk” event on Facebook and join the event discussion for updates and activities; and walk and share the journey any time during the month of September. People are encouraged to post photos and videos directly to the Facebook event discussion or anywhere on social media using #HbgHeartWalk.

In addition to walking, other activities to consider are getting the whole family involved and having an indoor dance party; trying out a few strengthening exercises like push-ups, lunges, and squats; or creating an at-home circuit workout.

Mohler Center Plans Schedule Mohler Senior Center, 25 Hope Drive, Hershey, has announced that membership renewals are available and has posted its schedule of activities. For more information or to register for an event, readers may contact 717-533-2002 or information@mohlersenior center.com.

Penn State Health/HMC has renewed Mohler’s lease at 25 Hope Drive until the summer of 2022. At that point, the senior center plans to move into its new home at the Hershey Community Center.

Due to Pennsylvania’s social setting restrictions, Mohler Center will be closed to indoor activities until further notice.

It will re-examine this policy by the end of the year. Also, as of Sept. 1 staff have begun offering limited office hours by appointment only.

Move, Groove and Grub with Kim from Country Meadows will take place on Friday, Sept. 11, from 10 to 11

a.m. in the parking lot. A bagged lunch will be provided.

Readers may register by Wednesday, Sept. 9. In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled for Friday, Sept. 18.

The Jigsaw Puzzle and Book Exchange is open in the lobby by appointment only.

While the center cannot offer in-person Medicare counseling, there are resources available for those who are approaching Medicare age. For more information, readers may contact the center.

Smart Driver Classes have been suspended until 2021.

Those who have computers can take the class online by visiting www.AARP.org. The center will put out a list of inperson classes in 2021.

A new Level 1 tap dancing class for beginners will be offered on Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. via Zoom.

The class will highlight foundational tap dancing techniques and easy-to-learn choreography for beginners.

No experience is necessary.

There is a cost for each class.
