Pack 97 Sets Open House

Cub Scout Pack 97 will hold its annual open house on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Scout Complex in Middletown.

Cub Scout Pack 97 of Londonderry Township will hold its annual open house on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Scout Complex , 1831 Felker Road, Middletown. The event is open to all boys entering

kindergarten through fifth grade. Boys do not need to reside in Londonderry Township to join Pack 97. Parents or other adult caregivers should plan to stay at the event.

The open house will feature an opening

flag ceremony; activity stations that will include gaga ball, skits, backyard bass fishing, and games of skill; and refreshments. Scout leaders will be present to answer any questions, and membership applications will be available.

Ted Yoder To Present Concert

Day has served as Highmark Blue Shield’s chief market officer and senior vice president of the central region since 2018. He has more than 25 years of experience in the health care industry, including positions with Aetna and most recently at Murray Securus Insurance, where he was vice president of health benefits.

Day is a graduate of Ursinus College with a degree in economics and business administration. He also has his Certified Employee Benefits Specialist certification from the W harton School of Business and IFEBP. The annual Capital Region Heart Ball will take place on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020, at the Hershey Lodge. The gala to raise funds for the American Heart Association will include dinner, dancing, silent and live auctions and other activities.

Palmyra Public Library’s board of directors has launched a capital campaign to improve financial stability through mortgage reduction and increasing financial reserves. The fundraising goal is $500,000. To date, the library has raised $440,000 in pledges and contributions. Due to the generosity, vision and devotion of library founder Dr. Catherine H. Hand, the library building will be named in her honor.

In 2014, when the Palmyra Borough Municipal Building required replacement, the library lost its space, which was free of utility costs, maintenance, and rent payments. The library relocated to a 7,500-square-foot facility at 50 Landings Drive, Annville, in Flightpath Business Park. This facility has ample

parking, additional community meeting areas and increased technology access. For the first time, the library incurred the costs of a mortgage and maintaining a facility. The capital campaign will insure that the library continues to provide sustainable and invaluable library services to the Palmyra area.

The library received 150,000 visits in 2018 with nearly 150,000 items borrowed. It provides public computers, free WiFi, educational programs for people of all ages, children’s educational play areas and access to online resources for community members.

Chorus Seeks Singers The Voices of Palmyra group is looking for singers. Registration to sing in the chorus for its Christmas concert has been set for Tuesdays, Sept. 10 and 17, at 7:15 p.m. at Church of the Redeemer United Church of Christ (UCC), 500 W. Chocolate Ave., Hershey. Chorus rehearsal will follow registration.

There will be a meet-and-greet during the event on Sept. 17.

Attendees may spend the evening singing with the Voices of Palmyra to see if they would like to join the group. Light refreshments will be served. No audition is required.

The Christmas concert will be on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 3 p.m.

Vivaldi’s “Gloria” is the major work this concert season, with other Christmas and winter songs to round out the program.

MDA Receives Grants Several of Walmart’s more than 35 locations in central Pennsylvania recently presented grants to Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The recent donors are as follows: Walmart store 4404, $500; Walmart store 1886, $500; Walmart store 1591, $1,000; and Walmart store 1640, $250.

Organizations such as MDA submit applications for Walmart grants ranging from $250 to a maximum of $5,000. MDA has received thousands of dollars in grant money over the years, and these funds are used to improve the quality of life of more than 1,000 people touched by neuromuscular disease in central Pennsylvania.

Grant money received sends children to camp, helps provide support services, and funds research to find a cure and transform the lives of children and adults with muscular

dystrophy, ALS and related muscle-debilitating diseases.

Recent major medical and scientific advancements in neuromuscular disease research and care include the development of seven new drugs for treatment and, most recently, AveXis’ Zolgensma, the first gene therapy for pediatric patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

Funds raised also help more than 20 area children attend a week at MDA Summer Camp at no cost to their families.

Additionally, Multidisciplinary Medical Clinics are held at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, and an equipment loan closet and bimonthly support groups are available for families.

World War II Group To Meet George Jackson will be the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Central Pennsylvania WWII Roundtable on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m.

AACA Library Receives Donation The AACA Library and Research Center in Hershey has announced that William T. “Tom” Gerrard has donated his extensive literature collection to the library. The library has cared for the collection since 2013, calling it the Gerrard Classic Auto Literature Collection.

Gathered during a 35-year span, the collection has included many of the rarest items known to the hobby covering the 1950s and 1960s. Items include sales catalogs, brochures, color and fabric samples, shop manuals, wiring diagrams, dealer binders, filmstrips, slides and more. The formal transfer of ownership occurred in early 2019.

Gerrard has had a long-standing relationship with the AACA

Library and Research Center, which is why he originally offered the large collection to the center on a long-term loan.

Each item in the Gerrard Classic Auto Collection has been digitized, cataloged and made readily accessible in hard copy or electronic format at the AACA Library and Research Center.

The library, located at 501 W. Governor Road, Hershey, is free and open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays.

The donation will further the AACA Library’s mission of connecting people with primary sources pertaining to automotive history.

Area veterans of all ages, active military members, and their families are invited to attend the Veterans’ Expo & Job Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept.

12, at the Lebanon Expo Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon. Presented by OLP Events, the Veterans’ Expo & Job Fair was first held in Lancaster County in 2014 but now includes events in Berks County, York County, and the Capital Area. It is the first time the free event will be held in Lebanon County.

Royer’s Holds Food Drive Royer’s Flowers & Gifts’ annual food drive collected 1,381 pounds of nonperishable items for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and Helping Harvest, formerly Greater Berks Food Bank. The Royer’s Stems Hunger event, which took place from June 22 to July 6, has collected more than eight tons of food since it began in 2011.

Donors received a free carnation for each food item they

contributed, up to six per visit.

Besides Royer’s 16 stores, eight Drayer Physical Therapy Institute locations in the area served as drop-off locations.

Cullings Named Executive Director Hershey Rotary Welcomes Guests

The Dauphin County Library System board of trustees has announced the appointment of Karen Cullings as the system’s next executive director. Cullings has served as interim executive director since July 2018.

Cullings began her career in libraries at Bosler Memorial Library in Carlisle where, as a high school student, she worked as a page part time and also volunteered. A lifelong learner and an avid reader, Cullings returned to library employment in 1991 when she started at Dauphin County Library System as the adult services librarian. One year

later, she assumed the position of public information officer and has been a part of the senior management team since that time. As her position transitioned to community relations director, she embraced new challenges as the development officer for the system. Starting in 2002, she was instrumental in a series of capital campaigns that provided funding for the replacement of three libraries and significant improvements to two others.

In July 2018, the board of trustees appointed Cullings to the role of interim executive director to fill the vacancy left by

the resignation of the previous executive director. In the year since her appointment, she has worked with library staff to set an internal improvement plan in place that identifies and removes barriers to library services for the public. She has also overseen the library system’s broader engagement with the community through community conversations modeled on the The Harwood Institute approach to community building called “turning outward.” Turning outward equips people, organizations, communities and networks with the tools to bridge divides, build capacity and tackle shared challenges. The library system’s goal is to join forces with community partners to become a collective force for positive change.

Squadron 307 Cadets Graduate In June, 13 Civil Air Patrol Squadron 307 cadets graduated from Pennsylvania Wing of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Training Schools held at the Fort Indiantown Gap training facilities. The Pennsylvania Wing of the Civil Air Patrol hosts over 400 members annually that attend a variety of training courses.

Nine Squadron 307 cadets, including C/Amn Eli Bell, C/A1C Daniel Eby, C/SrA Gabrielle Eby, C/Amn Chloe Hains, C/A1C Reid Levengood, C/AB Daniel Rebert, C/A1C Hannah Rebert, C/AB Michael Slenker, and C/TSgt Destiny Whitmoyer successfully graduated from the rigorous cadet encampment course. The cadet encampment course, taught in a manner similar to Air Force Basic Military Training, is designed to develop cadet leadership skills, expose cadets to aerospace related careers, promote the importance of regular physical exercise, and to reinforce moral character. Cadet encampment also provides these cadets with the basic knowledge to become successful during their cadet airmen ranks and beyond.

Three Squadron 307 cadets, including C/SSgt Nicholas Arnold, C/SSgt Nolan Harner, and C/SMSgt Mason Bennett, successfully graduated from the Leadership Development Course.

The purpose of the Leadership Development Course is to expand on the leadership skills taught at cadet encampment and teach them to be first-line supervisors. Cadets that attend this school have advanced past the cadet airman ranks and are in the cadet non-commissioned officer ranks. The goal of the Leadership Development Course is to provide these cadets with the skills necessary to be leaders at the flight sergeant and flight commander levels.

One Squadron 307 cadet, C/CMSgt Jacob Bell, graduated from the Region Cadet Leadership School. This school is designed to allow cadet officers to become more effective leaders at their local squadron. Cadet officers are exposed to leadership

theory, given opportunities for hands on leadership training with other cadets, and presented leadership challenges which they are expected to solve.

Connecting The Community Through Art Heart Of Lancaster Show Planned For Labor Day Weekend

“Our show is geared for the community, and we always make sure that it’s free,” explained Marilyn Hobday, founder of Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show.

As an artist and retired educator, Hobday is passionate, to say the least, about making sure that the arts continue to thrive in Lancaster and that everyone has a part in them.

“We try very hard to focus on local

artists, although we do have artists that come from all along the East Coast,” said Hobday.

The 32nd annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine.

Live music will be performed by jazz band Over Easy on both days, and food and beverages will be available to purchase.

The show will feature the work of 200 juried artists, including 50 newcomers.

“Customers are excited about coming

every year because they like both: seeing some of the same people and seeing some new artists, too,” said Hobday. “All of the people that are coming are working very hard at their art. I like to see small businesses like that thrive.”

“We have a lot more 2-D art this year, which is nice. It’s not quite 50-50, but we’re getting there,” Hobday noted. “The most important thing is the diversity of merchandise that is coming.” She is also proud to have a show that offers customers artwork at a variety of price points. “I think the customers love this show because it’s affordable,” remarked Hobday.

is live demonstrations, and Hobday said that 50 artists will be demonstrating their crafts for visitors this year. Balloon sculptures, metalwork, and henna tattoos are just a few of the processes that visitors will be able to get a glimpse of.

This year’s featured artists are Laura Mark Finberg of Pequea, a nationally known wildlife painter; Andrew Loercher of Lancaster, who creates handmade redware pottery; and Tim Mateer of Mount Joy, an international wildlife photographer. Each of the artists will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the information booth, where people may also enter to win drawings for gift cards to use at the show. Winners will be announced every hour.

Each show applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. “We’re really good to our exhibitors. We cater to them because everyone who serves on the (show’s) committee has to be a working artist,” said Hobday, who serves as chairperson of the show’s planning committee, which also includes Loercher, Bunny Switzenburg, Susan Quinn, Melissa Ward Carroll, and Jessica Keener.

“We always try to shine light on a local charity, and this year it will be The Common Wheel,” stated Hobday. Based in downtown Lancaster, The Common Wheel offers an after-school Earn-a-Bike program that provides students ages 12 to 17

Vicki Dolan, executive director of Children’s Playroom of Lancaster County, often tells moms and dads that parenting is the most important job they will ever have, and it is also the hardest.

Dolan is passionate about setting parents up for success as they navigate that journey, which is why she founded Children’s Playroom, a parenting support group that exists to let people know that there are others who are going through the same parenting difficulties and that they are not alone.

“Children’s Playroom gives a safe haven for parents to come and open up with each other,” shared Dolan. Parents and young children - from birth through age 6 - are welcome to register to attend Children’s Playroom once a week at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. Sessions are offered from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays beginning on Tuesday, Sept.

For the first portion of the morning, parents and children play together before the parents

head to another room to listen to guest speakers or have a discussion, covering topics like child development, bedtime routines, toilet training, stress management, and positive discipline.

“Discipline means to teach, so we’re talking about teaching our children,” said Dolan. “We talk about being kind and firm and how we need both. We can be kind but still be firm.”

Learning about positive discipline and practical strategies for how to implement that has been a game-changer for Cathi Martin, an Elizabethtown mother of four children ranging from ages 10 to 1, who will be attending Children’s Playroom for her eighth year this fall. “(Children’s Playroom) really has made me feel more confident in my purpose as a parent of my kids. It’s given me direction,” said Martin. “(Positive discipline) makes me feel better as a parent because it’s just a more positive way of handling things.” At first, her husband was apprehensive about the term “positive discipline,” but once she explained and modeled tools she learned at Children’s Playroom such as asking versus telling - and he saw that they worked, he was on board.

Manheim resident and mother of three Lisa Moore said that since attending Children’s Playroom, she has noticed that she yells a lot less - a result that also thrills Dolan, as one of her motivations in offering Children’s

Playroom is to help parents realize there are effective ways to discipline children without yelling.

Children’s Playroom is something that Martin and Moore say their children all look forward to - or have great memories of - as well. “The guidance they get from Miss Vicki is phenomenal,” Martin said. It also helps with easing children (and parents) into transitions, as parents are only a room away and the staff members provide updates as needed. Plus, the children have fun socializing with peers.

“When I asked my son what he misses about Children’s Playroom, he said, ‘My friends,’” relayed Moore.

“The moms develop friendships too. You can share what your

deepest failures are, and there’s no judgment,” said Martin.

“The support is huge,” agreed Moore. “I didn’t realize how much I would need that support as a stay-at-home parent.”

In addition to morning sessions, Children’s Playroom offers a single moms’ parenting program every other Wednesday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Dinner is provided, and the group follows the same format of playtime together followed by a time where moms split off for discussion while the children have supervised activities in another room.
