Friends In Action (FIA) International, a nonprofit organization located in Middletown, recently partnered with pastors in Bolivia to provide COVID-19 relief to indigenous people groups. Aid has included medical care, medical supplies and food. FIA uses infrastructure projects as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached indigenous people groups.

Kiwanis Club Donates Blankets

River, which are especially vulnerable to COVID-19. For most of the villagers, their town hospital has only 35 beds and one ventilator and is a multiple-day journey by boat and on foot. Additionally, some villagers travel two days from their remote locations to find medicines such as acetaminophen. FIA’s field leaders, Donna and Gary Ferch, reported that close to 90% of FIA’s coworkers in the area have contracted the virus.

The Kiwanis Club of Middletown recently completed and donated 40 blankets for the Children’s Resource Center in Harrisburg. The club made the donation as part of its service project for April, which was Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The project began in November with the members of the Stitches of Love group from Middletown First Church of God who supplied and cut fleece for the Kiwanis Club to tie into no-sew blankets.

Club members picked up the materials in February.

Library Sets Virtual Race Fundraiser The Hershey Public Library will hold a virtual race fundraiser from Saturday, Aug. 1, to Monday, Aug. 31.

The virtual race will raise funds for the library’s Friends organization. A portion of each virtual race registration will go directly to benefit the Friends. The event will be managed by U.S. Road Running Virtual Races.

The Friends’ annual book sale, an important source of library program funding, was canceled due to health safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Funds received from the race will help sustain programs that would have benefited from the book sale. Participants may race from 1 mile up to 100 miles at a time and location that suits them. All registrants will receive a finisher medal and a real race bib.

Book Club Reaches Milestones

Grace Chapel Plans Gospel Concert Gospel singer Dusty Aleman will perform in concert at Grace Chapel, 2535 Colebrook Road, Elizabethtown, on Sunday, July 26, at 6 p.m. in the church pavilion. Social distancing regulations will be in place.

Aleman grew up in a small town in southcentral Texas. He graduated from high school and later was drafted into the Army, where he spent a tour in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. Aleman started riding in rodeos when he came back from Vietnam. By the time he was 38, Aleman had been through two marriages and several relationships in between. He had participated in rodeos, worked construction, and driven trucks, and he had also been introduced to illegal drugs.

In July 1984, Dusty left Texas and moved to Oklahoma hoping to start a new life. In September 1984, Dusty attempted twice to take his life, but he realized God had other plans for him. In October, Dusty met Myrna and they were married the following year.

In 1989, Dusty found Jesus Christ. In his life before Christ, Dusty had sung in dances, clubs, and bars. He loved to sing, and he realized he needed to sing about Jesus Christ.

Hope Springs Farm Reopens With Dauphin County’s transition into the green phase, day programs and pre-vocational programs were clear to open under approved plans. Hope Springs Farm, 201 Trail Road, Hershey, has reopened to continue serving adults who have intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Hope Springs Farm’s plan is to limit the number of program participants, called growers, each day to 12, in four groups of three. Prior to the COVID-19 closure, the farm hosted more than 30 growers on any given day. It has also reduced the program to five hours a day rather than six. Hope Springs has mandated that all staff wear masks and conduct COVID-19 screenings each day, and growers must wear masks if they are able.

Hope Springs has also asked families and residential staff to pre-screen growers before they send them to the farm, and growers are screened again when they arrive. They will not attend community outings from the farm, but will continue limited

community outings with pickup and drop-off to growers’ homes or chosen locations.

Growers will deliver Meals on Wheels, help at community gardens, and drop off produce at Cocoa Packs. They also will continue to volunteer at CATRA, paint park benches at Governor Dick Environmental Center and visit local amusement parks and attractions.

Over the years, the program has grown from just a few growers supervised and assisted by a few staff members and parents to a full-service program serving up to 38 growers daily on the farm and another 10 growers a day in the Community Program, which serves more than 70 families from throughout central Pennsylvania.

Visitors are welcome on the farm, as long as they have their temperature checked and answer “no” to a set of questions regarding symptoms and travel.

One of the pastors participating in the relief efforts was pastor Saul. Wearing his mask and gloves, Saul began knocking on doors and distributing food and medical supplies funded in part by FIA donors.

Going door-to-door to indigenous populations in the small towns and villages near Guayaramerin, Saul shared the Gospel and prayed with many villagers who already had COVID-19 and others who were afraid of catching it. Saul later contracted COVID-19 and experienced complications from the virus and diabetes.

Among FIA’s efforts in Bolivia is El Misionero, a riverboat used to take medical personnel and the Gospel into unreached villages accessible only by the Amazon River. FIA began building the boat more than a decade ago, and each year, doctors, nurses, and dentists volunteer to treat more than 1,100 villagers for dewormings, prenatal care, minor surgeries, and vision and dental needs using the boat.

One helper who worked on the boat was Medardo Rodriguez Dorado. Dorado championed the medical ministry for years by removing rotten wood, milling new timbers, and repairing the boat so it could be sailed it farther into the Amazon jungle to reach

additional villagers. Dorado was well-known by other villagers for being proficient with a chainsaw. He and his wife contracted COVID-19, and Medardo died from the disease in early June. FIA sent funds to help to provide food and medical care for Medardo’s widow and other widows.

El Misionero’s first captain, pastor Manuel Bravo, also contracted COVID-19. Bravo is a national pioneer missionary who has also served as ministry outreach director partnering with FIA and an organization of seven evangelical Bible churches in Guayaramerin. Though in a high-risk category, he began moving toward recovery as a result of treatments provided by a team of volunteer doctors and nurses from El Misionero using medicines and intravenous therapy funded by donors to FIA. As the need is great, several churches and individuals have agreed to provide matching funds for donations up to $7,500. Gifts will be used to provide intraveous therapy, breathing treatments, and medicine for those who are sick, as well as rice and beans for grieving families.

Food Bank Seeks Help The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank needs help to continue to meet the increased demand it is experiencing in the wake of COVID-19. Since March, food bank volunteers have packed more than 153,000 Crisis Response Boxes, and additional volunteers are needed to help pack more as the economic impact continues.

Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and must sign up in advance by visiting www.central pafoodbank.org or calling 717564-1700. They will then be scheduled at the food bank’s off-site Central Packing Operations facility, where they will be kept socially distanced while packing boxes for those in need. All volunteers must

wear a mask and gloves, which can be provided by the food bank.

They will be asked to sign a waiver indicating they are free of COVID-19 symptoms and have not come in contact with anyone experiencing symptoms in the past 14 days. Those who have traveled out of state are asked not to volunteer until 14 days have passed.

Environmental Center Plans Programs Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will host two programs.

Pond Scoop will take place on Saturday, July 25, at 10:30 a.m.

Attendees will explore a local pond to see what lives under the water. Participants should wear

boots. Group size is limited.

A Golden Eagle Hikers activity will occur on Sunday, July 26, at 1:30 p.m. People over age 50 are invited to hike 2 to 3 miles on rocky and hilly trails.

In July 2010, Middletown Public Library director John Grayshaw created the Science Fiction Book Club (SFBC) at www.facebook.com/groups/ sciencefictionbookclub. The SFBC has been associated with the library since January 2017.

Today, the SFBC has members from around the world, including the U.K., Canada, Australia, Spain, France, Poland, Russia, Brazil, Japan, and India.

Like many libraries, the Middletown Public Library’s physical location was closed due to COVID-19 from March 15 to June 8, but the SFBC continued to thrive. On average, the book club adds 50 new members a week, but recently the book club was routinely adding 150 new members a week. The book club membership reached 6,000 in April and is currently at more than 6,500.

In the SFBC, there are two monthly Group Read discussions that are voted on by members.

The Harrisburg, Lincoln and Lancaster Railroad at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown, will operate train rides on Saturdays through Oct. 31.

Attendees will experience a 1.2-mile, round-trip train excursion through the center of Stone Gables Estate on the railroad, traversing the original 1838 railroad bed on which President Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train traveled on April 22, 1865. The train features a replica of an 1868 steam locomotive, pulling replicas of an 1848 Pioneer Coach and a replica of the 1865 presidential private car. The conductor will provide historical and current information about sights along the way, the railroad, train, and Stone Gables Estate. At the end of each trip, participants will have an opportunity to walk

Mount Hope Announces Revised Events Schedule Since Lancaster County has moved to the green phase of reopening, Mount Hope Estate is able to announce its revised 2020 events schedule.

The following events will be offered: Blues & Brews, Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18; Flavorfest, Saturday and Sunday, July 25 and 26; Pennsylvania Brewers Festival, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15 and 16; Celtic Fling, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22 and 23; and Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, weekends and Labor Day, Sept.

5 through Nov. 1.

Event formats will be modified to implement new safety initiatives designed to keep guests,

performers and employees safe.

These practices will include, but not be limited to, enhanced sanitization protocols, social distancing, event capacity management, the use of personal protective equipment and additional staff training.

With capacity restrictions in place, all tickets for the 2020 events will be by reservation only for a specific date. All tickets will be presold online with no day-of gate tickets sold for the 2020 events. Ticket details will be provided when the box office system is prepared to begin selling the reserved tickets. Instructions will be provided to current ticket and season pass holders.

Mount Hope Estate staff members look forward to welcoming guests back to the Faire grounds and ask for patience as they continue to monitor the changing guidelines and adjust as required. Updates will be provided to guests through the Faire’s Facebook page, at www.parenfaire.com and through the weekly email newsletter. Guests can join the email newsletter list through the homepage of the website.

Mount Hope Estate & Winery is located on Route 72, a halfmile south of Pennsylvania Turnpike Exit 266, 15 miles north of Lancaster and 14 miles east of Hershey.

Library Friends Set Read-A-Thon Since the Friends of the Hershey Public Library are unable to hold their annual book sale this year, readers may join in raising funds for the organization by registering for a Read-a-Thon.

People of all ages are welcome to participate.

The Friends provide support and funding for library programs and activities. Donations through the Read-a-Thon will help pay for year-round pro-

gramming for children and adults, children’s and adult reading programs, film festivals, and the National Library Week author visit.

“Music On The Porch” Slated

As a result of the pandemic and to keep everyone safe, the 2020 festival at Lisburn Community Fire Company, 1800 Main St., Lisburn, will be a drivethrough only food event from Thursday, Aug. 6, to Saturday, Aug. 8, from 4 to 8 p.m. Every night, annual specialties will be featured, including french fries, chicken corn soup, hot chicken and roast beef sandwiches with mashed potatoes, barbecue

State Farm To Offer Grants To Nonprofits A grant funding opportunity from State Farm is being offered for nonprofits.

State Farm Neighborhood Assist will award $25,000 grants to 40 nonprofit organizations to help fund neighborhood improvement projects.

In a recent State Farm research study, one-quarter of respondents said that they are “extremely” or “very” involved in trying to improve their neighborhood and six in 10 said they are trying to improve their neighborhood in some capacity. State Farm Neighborhood Assist aims to be a catalyst for that change.

Individuals can submit a cause at www.neighborhood assist.com. A submission guide is available on the website.

State Farm will accept the first 2,000 submissions. The State Farm Review Committee will then narrow the field to the top 200 finalists.

Voters will decide which community improvement projects win. The public will have a chance to vote 10 times a day, every day for 10 days, from Wednesday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Oct. 2, for their favorite causes from the list of finalists.

The 40 causes that receive the most votes will each win a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Last year, 163,000 people cast a total of 4.4 million votes in support of their favorite causes, selecting winners from small towns and big cities. Since the program began, State Farm has awarded $8 million in support of more than 300 causes.

Free Online STEM Camp Slated

The Summer Reading Club continues at the Dauphin County Library System with online story times, book clubs and special educational programs planned for people of all ages. Readers may register for programs at http://dcls.org.

Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a student-centered approach that encourages development of skills such as problem

Friends Cancel Book Sale UPMC Pinnacle Welcomes New Thoracic Surgeon The Friends of the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Ave., Hershey, have canceled the 2020 book sale because of health and safety concerns from the novel coronavirus pandemic. The annual sale, which features thousands of books for all ages, was scheduled to take place from Friday, July 31, through Wednesday, Aug. 5.

The sale is the largest

WITF, the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Intermediate Units (IUs) 12, 13 and 15 partnered to provide the summer camp in a format that may spark interest in STEM and its related careers, support different styles of learning, remove obstacles to participation, and meet educational objectives in a rewarding way.

The IUs recognized obstacles to participation could include families not having craft resources or broadcast television signals at home. To overcome these challenges, WITF assembled 3,000 resource bags and 300 antennas for IUs to distribute to

partner locations that serve families directly. Each free resource bag contains pencils, a pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, paper plates, construction paper, safety scissors, a glue stick and the curriculum packet with instructions in English and Spanish.

During the eight-week camp, families will watch featured PBS KIDS programs like “ Wild Kratts” and “Hero Elementary” on WITF TV to learn about animal habitats, camouflage, mimicry, structure and more. A discussion guide and key vocabulary will help caregivers talk to their children about what they are watching.
