Speaker To Share About Local Farm The Lower Swatara Township Historic Preservation Society will host a presentation on the history of Walnut Hill Farm on Thursday, July 21, at 6 p.m. at the Lower Swatara Township Firehouse, 1350 Fulling Mill Road, Middletown.

Ruth Shireman will share stories of the Walnut Hill Farm property, located on Longview Drive, and families that lived there. The farmhouse and barn were originally built in 1856.

The PTO at Hershey Christian Academy (HCA), 3003 Elizabethtown Road, Hershey, will hold a shoe drive fundraiser on Thursday, July 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the school. Community members may donate gently worn, used and new shoes in a drivethrough, drop-off format.

Funds raised through the shoe drive will help Hershey Christian Academy to enhance its students’ school experience. Shoes collected will go overseas, where they will be

used in micro-enterprises to help people in places like Chile, Ghana and Haiti.

Food trucks will be parked at the event, including Annie Anne’s soft pretzels, Spanish Island, Scoop Ó Dough and Rice Family pulled pork.

Fair Competitions Announced The 2022 Elizabethtown Fair will include a variety of contests this year. The event will run from Monday, Aug. 22, to Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, High Street, Elizabethtown. To learn more about the fair, visit www.etownfair.com.

The Group Exhibits competition is open to any group, including youth, adult, or both. viewer with a better understanding of agriculture and/or agribusiness either through their educational value or their promotion of a product. Each entry will be judged on how much it attracts attention, arouses interest, and conveys a message, as well as on design, workmanship, and originality.

inal essay and an original poem may be titled “Why I Like the Elizabethtown Fair” or any other title relating to the Elizabethtown Fair.

Lower Dauphin Students Honored In STEM Competition A team of three Lower Dauphin High School students was recently named third runner-up in the ninth annual Governor’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Competition.

Senior Lucian Martir and sophomores Braylee Klinger and Jyllian Garman represented the school in Division 2, which was for teams with a majority of new members. They are advised by Beth Kirman, high school science teacher.

During the school year, teams of students designed and built solutions to realworld problems. Teams were required to work with a member of their local community, a business, or an educational entity to help create an authentic experience while also providing opportunities to learn more about careers in STEM. The Lower Dauphin project was the AquaFilter, a nitrogen, phosphorus,

and sediment filtration system. Developed to address the surface water run-off problem in Pennsylvania, the AquaFilter can be attached to storm drain exit points to filter accumulating pollutants before they enter the river system. The students used computer-aided design software to create the design for the AquaFilter and 3D printers and other materials to construct their prototype.

The team members worked with field expert Shirley Clark, a professor of environmental engineering in the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology at Penn State Harrisburg, to create their prototype. They also had to write a research paper about the problem the AquaFilter was designed to solve.

Downingtown STEM Academy was Division 2 grand champion. Haverford High School was first runnerup, and the Technical College High School at Pennock’s Bridge was second runner-up.

Lower Dauphin High School hosted a breakfast on May 12 to thank the local businesses that provide opportunities for students in the special education program to participate in the Employability Skills Program, through which they may learn vocational skills.

Rob Kain, director of museum advancement at the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Museum, told the story of one of the students noticing that some of the toy artifacts had fallen over in a display case. The next time the students were back, the museum opened the case and the students got to rearrange the display.

Fighting MS With Fitness

When Mark Mueller’s wife, Jackie, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1998, the couple saw the diagnosis as an opportunity. “We decided to treat this naturally as much as we could, without medication,” Mark recalled.

“We did a lot of experimenting with nutrition and exercise to see what worked and what didn’t.” The result of their efforts became MS FitEffect, a free, 10-week fitness program for people with MS. The next session will run from Saturday, Sept. 10, through Saturday, Nov. 19, at Elizabethtown Fitness Club, 626 S. Market St. “I did not set out to do this.

It sort of found me,” Mark said. After his wife’s diagnosis, Mark changed careers from operating his own woodworking business to become a personal trainer. “I have always loved fitness, so I got my personal training certification, but I had no idea of how to work with people with MS,” he explained. Through trial and error with Jackie, Mark created a program that has helped people improve their balance and strength. The couple created MS FitEffect in 2016, and the effort became a nonprofit in September of 2020. “We teach strength, stamina and stability,” Mark stated.

“Through persistent training, we have watched clients gain strength, stamina and live more productive lives. We have watched them move from wheelchairs and walkers to standing, first steps, skipping and even running.”

Because it’s free, people may only participate in one 10week session. “They get a gym membership, and they get oneon-one training with an MS fitness and wellness certified trainer,” Mark said. “They get an exercise program that’s designed for them by a trainer.” He noted that the exercises are suitable to do in the gym or at home. Because MS affects everyone differently, programs are individualized, he explained. “This is for anybody at any age, at any stage,” he said. The goal of the program is to teach participants exercises they can continue on their own at home or at the gym after the session concludes.

In the future, Mark would like to create a full online video library of exercises, which would be free to access, along with weekly podcasts or webinars with information on living with MS. Funding for MS FitEffect comes from

Mark emphasized that anyone with MS can benefit from his program. “We work on the mind-body connection,” he stated. “This is a program for everybody. So many people

want a magic pill, and this is not about a magic pill. It’s about what a person is willing to put into it to help themselves. We work alongside them. We encourage them. If they put in the work, they will definitely see results.”

If using a charcoal grill, build a small charcoal fire at one end of the grill. If using a gas grill, set a burner at one end of the grill to medium-low. Put the grill grate on the grill and clean the grill grate with a wire brush.

2 - Coat the fish steaks with 2 tablespoons olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Set aside for 5 minutes.

3 - Meanwhile, make the mop: In a small bowl, stir together the rum, lime juice, canola oil, hot pepper sauce, sugar, and 3 tablespoons of the mint leaves.

4 - Brush the grill grate with olive oil. Put the fish on the grill away from the heat, spoon 1 tablespoon of the mop over each fish steak, cover the grill, and cook until the fish steaks flake to gentle pressure, about 1 hour, basting with mop about every 5 minutes.

5 - Serve each fish steak scattered with the remaining chopped mint and the lime zest.

Students Lauded For Good Deeds Conserving Energy With The AC On

A sixth-grader at Lower Dauphin Middle School and a first-grader at Londonderry Elementary School were recognized in May by Lower Dauphin Communities That Care and Hummelstown Borough Police Department for doing the right thing.

First-grader Tennley Commella was nominated for asking donors in the annual Kids Heart Challenge fundraiser at school to also consider donating to a Ukraine relief charity.

Tennley raised over $700 for the charity. Sixth-grader Brianna Geyer was recognized for informing an adult about an

unsafe situation at the school.

For their efforts, Tennley and Brianna received a gift card to Target; a Do the Right Thing T-shirt, pencil and certificate; and a Subway coupon.

This month’s program sponsor was M&T Bank.

Air conditioning (AC) is a welcome luxury come the dog days of summer, and that can make July and August some of the more costly months on the calendar regarding energy consumption. Though the months of July and August may not seem well-suited to cutting energy consumption, there are ways to conserve that do not require turning off the AC. Homeowners should reconsider the location of their thermostat. The Performance Building Institute Inc. notes that thermostats are sensitive to heat. Thermostats located near heatgenerating appliances like lamps, televisions, and computers may be fooled into thinking a home’s interior is warmer than it actually is. That will keep a temperature-controlled AC running longer and more frequently than is necessary. If necessary, move the thermostat to a part of the home where there are no electronics and appliances.

The maintenance of the AC unit is important. Even the most energy-efficient AC unit will be forced to work harder, and consume extra energy, if it is not well-maintained. The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy notes that ENERGY STAR-certi-

fied HVAC equipment can yield annual energy savings of 10% to 30%. But such products must be maintained.

Annual maintenance appointments with an HVAC technician can ensure the unit is clean and refrigerant levels are correct, helping it run as efficiently as possible.

Homeowners can embrace natural ways to keep a home’s interior cool. Turning up the AC is not the only way to maintain a comfortable temperature inside a home during the months of July and August. Closing curtains on especially warm days keeps the sun out and makes it easier to maintain comfortable temperatures inside without lowering the temperature on the thermostat. Avoiding the stove on hot nights and preparing cold meals or firing up the grill outside is another way to keep the house cool.

Homeowners should address insulation issues. Cracks around windows and doors affect the temperature inside the home, making it colder in winter and warmer in summertime. Seal cracks around doors and windows to keep the cool air in during the summer.

Come the dog days of summer, conserving energy does not need to come at the cost of comfort. Various strategies can help people reduce their energy consumptions and keep their air conditioners on.

Preparing For Times Of Drought It is important to plan for drought before it occurs. The following are several steps private homeowners can take to prepare for drought.

Well pumps should be checked regularly. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) urges homeowners who have well pumps on their properties to check them regularly for leaks. If the pump turns on and off while water is not being used, it has a leak. Addressing the leak promptly helps to conserve water, which is one of the most effective means to combatting drought.

Homeowners are encouraged to plant native species.

The U.S. Forest Service notes that native plants are adapted to the local climate and soil conditions. That means they will require less water and will be hardy enough to withstand heat waves in areas where especially high summer temperatures are the norm.

Homeowners can raise the blades on their lawn mower to prepare for drought. The DHS notes that lawn mower blades raised to at least three inches encourage grass roots to grow deeper and hold soil moisture. That can help lawns survive drought with-

out much intervention, including extra water during times when water restrictions are in place.

Lawns can be reseeded with drought in mind. When reseeding a lawn, homeowners are encouraged to consider the potential for drought. The DHS recommends individuals in areas affected or likely to be affected by drought plant drought-resistant lawn seed.

Drought-resistant grasses, which include Bermuda and Zoysia grass, can withstand prolonged periods without water.

However, before reseeding, homeowners should consult a local lawn and garden professional to ensure the grass will thrive in their area.

Come late spring, homeowners should devise a watering strategy to take them through the dog days of summer.

Water-efficient irrigation systems can protect flowers, plants, and shrubs during prolonged periods marked by little to no precipitation. In addition, less water will be lost to evaporation when watering during early morning or evening hours, when temperatures tend to be less extreme and the sun is not as high. If possible, hand water during these times of day or set irrigation system timers to do so.

Penn State Extension will present “Understanding Urban Tree System Benefits, Costs, and Interactions” on Tuesday, July 26, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom. The program will discuss the range of tree services and disruptions urban forest decision-makers encounter.

Participants will learn to consider tree system and neighbor interrelationships in sustainable urban forests.

The program will raise awareness of service and disservice relationships inherent in tree system use and enhance participant cost/ benefit analysis among competing tree landscape system priorities. Participants will increase their ability to incorporate stakeholder perceptions in sustainable urban

forest decision-making.

There is no charge to participate, but there may be a fee for Continuing Education Credits, if desired. Credits should be selected during registration. To receive credits, individuals must watch the webinar during the live session for which they registered and attend the full session. The time in session will be verified before credits are assigned.

The webinar is recommended for public tree, landscape, and environmental board members; municipal managers and arborists; and others interested in urban and community forestry. Registration is required to receive the link to access the webinar.

Southern Peach Cobbler Recipe Directions: 1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

2 Combine the peaches, 1 cup sugar, and water in a saucepan and mix well. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes.

Remove from the heat.

3 Put butter in a 3-quart baking dish and place in oven to melt.

4 Mix remaining 1 cup sugar, flour, and milk slowly to prevent clumping. Pour mixture Southern Peach Cobbler over melted butter. Do not stir.

(Serves 15) 5 Spoon fruit on top, gently Ingredients: pouring in syrup. Sprinkle top 1 1/2 cups self-rising flour with ground cinnamon, if 1 stick butter using. Batter will rise to top 1/2 cup water during baking. Bake for 30 to 2 cups sugar, divided 4 cups peaches, peeled and sliced 45 minutes.

6 To serve, scoop onto a plate 1 cup milk and serve with choice of whipped Ground cinnamon (optional) cream or vanilla ice cream.

And there is no denying how sweet and tasty peaches can be, whether they are plucked right from a tree or enjoyed in any number of recipes.
