reasons why these two counties have been nationally designated.”
717-367-1115 (Elizabethtown)
717-533-6310 (Hershey)
“In March 2019, York and Lancaster counties were officially designated the nation’s 55th National Heritage Area,” explained Megan Salvatore, visitor service representative for SNHA. “National Heritage Areas are places where historical, cultural and natural resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally important landscape. It’s obvious why some places are designated as national parks, but National Heritage Areas are more complex. Our bucket list showcases some of the
Among the activities on the list are learning about the power of wind turbines at the Turkey Hill Trail Overlook, exploring the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, learning about early science and medicine at Haldeman Mansion, checking out some of the oldest farmers markets in the country and searching for a whimsical gnome garden in Akron.
As Salvatore explained, the SNHA bucket list runs throughout the year. It includes seasonal activities and events, as well as yearround activities to explore. “Participants can share their bucket list experience by snapping photos, posting them to social media and tagging @susqNHA in the post,” she noted. If participants complete at least five items and submit their information on the SNHA website, they can receive an SNHA sticker.
SNHA started the bucket list idea to keep people in the region busy during the pandemic in 2020. The list focused specifically on Columbia that year and then branched out to
include the river towns of Marietta and Wrightsville the following year. Last year was the first time the organization launched a bucket list covering the entire region. Salvatore came up with the tasks on the list, noting that they are engineered to explore partners and sites offering a diverse mix of heritage, culture, recreation and refreshments unique to the region. A collaborative effort with the SNHA staff narrowed down the final 55 activities, she said, noting that number was chosen because the region is the 55th designated National Heritage Area.
“I would encourage residents to rediscover and learn new things about the region,
using the Susquehanna National Heritage Area bucket list,” Salvatore remarked. “The bucket list tasks open conversations about our collective past and create fun talking points with visitors to the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and Zimmerman Center for Heritage. It’s an interesting way for visitors to understand the national connections this region has woven throughout history.” A digital version of the list can be found at www.susqnha.org. Paper copies are also available at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, and the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.
Aesthetically pleasing, beauty takes on a deeper meaning when shared with others. In the natural world, there are few things recognized as more beautiful than plants, including trees and flowers.
Manheim Township resident Dennis Denenberg has a deep appreciation for the magnificent and complex 1acre garden that surrounds his home at 410 Valley Road, Lancaster. But that appreciation blooms into pure enjoyment when visitors see it, smell it and experience it.
In fact, Denenberg has made his garden, affectionately referred to as The Gardens of Oz, available as a nonprofit venue for charitably minded organizations to host fundraisers, meetings and events free of charge. In return for the use of the garden, Denenberg does accept donations to Diana’s Dreamers, a charity he founded at Millerville University to honor his late sister Diana
Denenberg-Durand, who succumbed to breast cancer in 2007.
Denenberg said that the garden has already been reserved for four events this season but that he’d like to see it used four times more.
Guided by a pair of certified horticulturists, known as the “Garden Godesses,” the tour takes about an hour to complete.
“My joy comes from seeing people enjoy the gardens,” said Denenberg. “I like to hear people laugh and ask questions. There is nothing as spectacular as nature. Even our grandest man-made monuments don’t come close. It’s fun to share it.”
Plural, The Gardens of Oz is actually an arrangement of more than two dozen separate but intertwining gardens. Mixing both common and exotic plants, the garden features a bamboo grove, fish ponds, a garden dedicated to the Emerald City and Yellow Brick Road, as well as a pink garden honoring the memory of his sister.
The Gardens of Oz is home to more than 500 species of thriving vegetation, each with its own unique life cycle and color pattern.
“Every garden has a different vibe,” said Denenberg. “This is a ‘Wow.’ Here, you’re in the garden. You’re not just observing it. You’re at the whim of nature. Gardeners appreciate the layout, but every person wants to see colors.”
“Each season affects the garden drastically,” continued Denenberg. “My favorite time is spring. It’s spectacular. Once the first blooms come, from then on, there are colors everywhere. Then with the interaction of animals, the bees and the birds, it’s magical.”
It’s also natural beauty 28 years in the making.
When he purchased the
property, Denenberg decided after an initial mowing of the lawn that he wanted his yard to be a garden. Now, a blade of grass cannot be found anywhere.
It took Denenberg eight years to fill in the acre lot with plants and flowers, a process he continues to tweak today. Denenberg has been offering tours of the garden for about 15 years now.
“It’s morphed in that the garden now is much more mature,” said Denenberg. “Life is about giving back. It doesn’t matter how rich or poor you are; give back to others. Even a smile can make someone’s day.”
For additional information about The Gardens of Oz, email Denenberg at drdenden @aol.com or call 717-682-0206.
In honor of Stop Food Waste Day, Flashfood and the Giant Company recently announced a major milestone in their sustainability and food waste reduction efforts.
Since May 2020, when it first partnered with Flashfood, a digital marketplace that connects consumers to heavily discounted food nearing its best-by date, the Giant Company has diverted 6 million
pounds of food from landfills.
As a direct result, the Giant Company and Flashfood have together saved more than 10 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere, which is the equivalent of taking 1,186 cars off the road for a year. The food saved also equates to more than two million meals that fed families instead of ending up
in landfills.
The Flashfood program started as a four-store pilot in 2020 and has since been integrated across 190 locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
Flashfood shoppers use the app to save on meats, dairy products, seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables and other grocery items. Shoppers browse and purchase discounted food
items directly through the Flashfood app on their mobile phone and then pick up their order from the Flashfood Zone located inside their participating Giant or Martin’s store.
For more information on Giant’s community impact efforts, visit www.giantfood stores.com/pages/purpose.
More information about Flashfood is available at www.flashfood.com.

Art submissions are currently being accepted from artists age 14 and up who currently reside in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The deadline for entries is Monday, May 22. Guidelines for submitting art can be found at www.street2creek.org.
