Lower Dauphin students attend Youth and Government convention
Ateam of 21 Lower Dauphin High School students attended the Youth and Government model convention, and a third of them were recognized for outstanding achievements. Sponsored by the YMCA, the state convention was held from April 18 to 21 at the Hilton Harrisburg hotel and the state Capitol in Harrisburg.
Out of the 100 students in the press/media group, Braylee Klinger won Outstanding Press Social Media, and Enzo Dreon won Outstanding Press Videography.
Of the 170 students in the judicial group, Brenna Tressler was one of the eight selected to attend the National Judicial Competition, and Sasha Jones was selected as an alternate. The YMCA partners with the American Bar Association to conduct the nationwide conference for high school students, in which
delegations from across the country participate in a mock trial and appellate court competition, which will be held in St. Paul, Minn., this year.
Youth and Government can help students to deepen their knowledge of the inner workings of government and sharpen their skills in leadership, problem solving, critical thinking, debating, and public speaking.
Of the 270 students in the legislative group, Jamie Gallick was chosen to attend the YMCA Conference on National Affairs
(CONA), and Claire Rafferty and Emma Thomas were selected as alternates. The CONA, held in North Carolina, is a nationwide conference for high school students. At this conference, delegations from 34 states debate issues of national and international concern.
Also during the Youth and Government model convention, Emma’s bill was the third to be debated in the Senate on Friday morning. Her bill passed in the Senate and then went to the House, where Claire was a secondary sponsor for it. The bill passed in the House and was the first bill to be signed into law by the governor that weekend. This was the first time in five years that a Lower Dauphin student has had a bill pass through both the Senate and the House and be signed into law at the state convention.

FIRST Robotics Team 2539, the Krypton Cougars, recently completed another season.
The team finished qualification matches at the FIRST World Championship in Houston with a 9-1 record and ranked third out of 75 teams from around the world in the Curie Division. The FIRST Robotics World Championship featured 600 teams split into eight divisions all named after famous scientists.

For those interested in becoming a Master Gardner, the Penn State Master Gardeners of Dauphin County are now accepting applications for basic training starting in October. Applicants are asked to apply at www.exten sion.psu.edu/programs/master -gardener/counties/dauphin before Friday, May 31. Applicants will be asked to take part in an interview in June or July. Offers will be made in
August. A candidate’s acceptance with the training fee and forms will be due in September before the course begins in October.
The 2.5-hour weekly basic training certification course will be held on Thursday evenings from October through March, except for holiday weeks in November and December.
