SPRING CONCERT

The Hummelstown Community Singers will present their annual spring concert on Sunday, May 19, at 3 p.m. The concert, “Songs of Stage and Screen,” will be presented in the sanctuary of Hummelstown United Church of Christ, 104 E. Main St., which is located on the corner of Main and Water streets in Hummelstown. There will be no admission fee charged to attend the concert, and tickets are not required. The Hummelstown Community Singers, under the direction of Kate Bright, perform two concerts each year. The group also performs at many retirement and life care communities throughout the area and at local events. Foundation To Hold Golf Tournament The Hershey Lions Club Foundation will hold its 30th annual Henry F. Nixon Memorial Amateur Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 1. The event will take place at Manada Golf Club, 609 Golf Lane, Grantville. The registration fee will include 18 holes of golf, use of a golf cart, door prizes, and a catered dinner. Registration will take place from noon to 12:45 p.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The format will be a four-person scramble. Proceeds from the event will benefit projects of the Hershey Lions Club Foundation, including eye exams and glasses, sponsorship of youth sports teams, student scholarship awards, and support for the Hershey Food Bank, the Hershey High Parents Club, and the

student backpack program. During its first 29 years, the event has raised a total of nearly $150,000, all of which has benefited the community. The registration deadline is Saturday, May 25. Palmyra Church of the Brethren, 45 N. Chestnut St., will host Music Appreciation Sunday at 9 a.m. on May 19. The service will highlight the church’s musical ensembles and feature congregational singing. For more information, readers may call 717-838-6369 or visit www.palmyracob.org.

Union Canal Days, set for May 18 and 19 at Union Canal Tunnel Park in Lebanon, will offer a variety of activities and programs for people of all ages. The 30th annual Union Canal Days will take place at Union Canal Tunnel Park, 25th Street and Union Canal Drive, Lebanon. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 19. Narrated tours through the tunnel will be available. The event will feature exhibitors, vendors, a flower booth, carnival games, and giveaway drawings for baskets. Additionally, attendees may visit a Medieval re-enactment. Again this year will be a children’s area with games, Pigvilla, and bounce houses. The event will feature entertainment by the Cedar Crest Middle School band, the Lebanon High Middle School Wind Ensemble, and the Steitz City Players on May 18 and Matt Dodd and The Haylofters on May 19. Picnic tables are

set up throughout the park for those who wish to enjoy a meal. Although boating of any kind is prohibited on the canal at all times, guided kayak tours will be offered during the morning on May 18 and 19. Separate costs have been set for renting single kayaks, renting tandem kayaks, and bringing one’s own kayak. Children who are a minimum age of 6 may ride in a tandem with a parent or guardian; anyone age 9 or older may use a single kayak. Safety instruction and fitting will precede the tour and will not count toward the 30-minute rental time. Participants will enter the canal from the North Park off Tunnel Hill Road starting at the dock near the Mule Shed, paddle to and through the tunnel, and then return to the start point. Hershey Chorus Slates Concerts The Hershey Community Chorus will perform its spring concert, “I Wish I Was in New Orleans,” on Friday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, 64 W. Chocolate Ave., Hershey. A second concert will be performed on Sunday, May 19, at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown. Guest musicians will feature The Vintage Jazz Band. James Hoffmann, music director, will retire after the May 19 concert after serving as the music director for the Hershey Community Chorus for 34 years. See Chorus pg 4

Pianist Will Perform In Cultural Series Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey, will welcome acclaimed concert pianist Joseph Kingma at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, in the sanctuary. The concert is the final installment of the 2018-19 Arts Alive Cultural Series. Kingma’s program will include Mozart’s 9 Variations on Jean-Pierre Duport: Minuet for Piano in D major, K. 573 “Duport Variationen”; Mendelssohn’s Fantasie in F-sharp minor, Op. 28 (“Sonate écossaise”); and Liszt’s Two Concert Etudes and Sonata in B minor. Kingma won first prize at the American Liszt Society’s inaugural Franz Liszt International Piano Competition and has also won awards in numerous other national and international competitions. He performs regularly as a concerto soloist, having appeared with the Manassas Symphony, Illinois Valley Symphony, and Spring Hill Orchestra, among others. He also performs as a recitalist. Kingma joined the faculty of Palm Beach Atlantic University as assistant professor of piano and coordinator of the keyboard division in 2018 and has been invited to teach and perform at universities and colleges nationwide. He received Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees at Rice University, as well as a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Texas at Austin. He has participated in masterclasses and
